“I feel like I could smell it through the TV” - Eric on Gwildor

This week on the program, we’re kicking off the 2026 Summer Blockbuster Extravaganza by talking about the toy/cartoon adaptation that was anything but a blockbuster, 1987’s Masters of the Universe!

Could this Billy Barty character have been designed to look any more disgusting? Why did they insist on dragging James Tolkan through almost every scene of the movie? Is the Courteney Cox character actually trying to live out a Bruce Springsteen song? And why in the world is He-Man barely in this He-Man movie? PLUS: As promised, here’s the link to the Pig Boy video on YouTube!

Masters of the Universe stars Dolph Lundgren, Meg Foster, Billy Barty, Courteney Cox, Robert Duncan McNeill, Jon Cypher, Chelsea Field, James Tolkan, Christina Pickles, Tony Carroll, Pons Maar, Anthony De Longis, Robert Towers, and Frank Langella as Skeletor; directed by Gary Goddard.

Come hang out in Vegas with us this summer as we do a three-night stand at ST:LV to celebrate 60 years of Star Trek and 10 years of The Nexus! We’ll be at the convention Thursday, Friday and Saturday night doing three Nexus shows on Wrath of Kahn, Generations, and First Contact! Best part is, you don’t need to have a convention pass to attend, each show is ticketed separately. Click through to snag your tix now!

“Gwildor.” -Dolph “We gotta open the cosmic key. You got any more bbq sauce?” -Gwildor

I choked on my drink when blow my slit got mentioned, outstanding

Sarah Montgomery

The eight-year-old boy's favorite character on the cartoon was Evil-Lyn? Hmm... that's a kid that, in one of two distinct ways, already knew what he wanted.

Todd B

Re: the issue with Tubi ads - ooooh, do I have a story with that. Finally watched Villeneuve's Incendies for the first time recently. Very good, if sobering, movie I made the mistake of watching for the first time on Tubi. Mostly it wasn't TOO bad, then it got to one of the worst timed ad breaks I have EVER seen. In the most 'spoiler-free' way possible: "Sing now." Brief moment of uncomfortable silence with the aftermath of that scene before a jaunty little ad for cell service craps its way in and I let out an audible "WHAT THE FUCK, TUBI?"

RJ Cunningham

This movie is one of YouTube Premiums free movies. YouTube Premium’s movie selection is a secret gem and kinda don’t want it getting more popular because they’ll make it a separate tier

John Locke

I was ten years old when this film came out and I had zero interest in seeing it. The trailers looked terrible. Plus, he-man killed Apollo Creed. So screw him.

RJ Cunningham

Chris Cabin’s brother-in-law, if it’s the one man who’s been mentioned in the past, has gotta have the worst dvd and toy collection of all time

Frank Grimes

That isnt a premium feature. Youtube has been rotatating free movies for a while now.

Craig

Didn’t take long either! Bone face!

Craig

I’m a little older, so I remember when the toys first came out and the hype and excitement about them. Each one came with a comic and the backstory at that point was totally different to what the cartoons established - Eternia was post apocalyptic with some technology surviving, hence the mix of swords and sorcery and sci-fi. It was pretty cool and better than all the Prince Adam cartoon stuff. But by the time the movie came out I think a lot of the kids like myself had lost interest. PS C’mon Andrew, you’re going to complain about Evil-Lyn’s name when the main character is called He-Man? :)

Daimon

Arrow Video did announce through their Toy Robot Label a new 4K version with the Preview Cut which is actually a new edition with alternative and extended scenes. Thought it would be worth mentioning

Jason

Gwildor has the hair and bearing of character from the movie Barfly.

Dan sulin

Of all the toy line cartoons that came out on the 80s, He-Man always struck me as being of a very specific time. If you were born in 1978 then He-man brings up extreme nostalgia. I feel like a year or two before and you were already maybe a bit old for it. And a few years later and on and you had so many other things to pick from that He-Man gets drowned out. So 48 year old men yelling! Damn I feel old

Matt

Me who not only had Burger King, but the god damn mozzarella sticks there, 2 days ago for the first time in YEARS can confirm - the BK stink gets everywhere.

Eren Keskin

He-Man, you boob! A beefcake is no match for the the Skeleton League!! *laughs in evil*

Rod

It’s all I wanted from this ep

Jonnie Sea

Somehow, the Skeleton League returned

Timothy Donovan

I remember watching this in the theater and afterwards throwing up in the parking lot... might have been I had too much candy, but I'd like to think it was my brain reacting to the movie.

Rod

This movie did NOT deserve the tears when Julie’s parents were alive at the end but god damn it they got me (really not that hard to make me cry).

RJ Cunningham

Damn and here I was bragging about how I’m paying premium prices for these free movies. That is good to know though

Jason

I feel like all the WHM guys dodged the real question: If Evilyne was your wife, how long would it be before you asked her to do the Gwildor, even if just for a night?

Scott Jacobson

You did a great job on this one. I was a he man kid and seen this in the theaters when I was 8 and have not revisited it since because I knew this was not good . Around this time I was transitioning into my TMNT phase a much better property for sure.

Jonnie Sea

No idea Gary Goddard had “the troubles” Captain Power still rules but I’m going to assume he didn’t have much to do with it…

Daimon

Crazy how the “planned sequel” was both going to be made at the same time as Cannon’s intended Spider-Man movie and eventually since things fell apart the idea for a Masters of the Universe sequel changed into Albert Pyun’s Cyborg

Kate

I was sort of into He-Man as a kid just by way of She-Ra, but I wish they had made a bad 80s live action movie of that instead of whatever will inevitably be the sequel to this new Masters of the Universe one.

Nicholas Knecht

Here Here! He-Man and Transformers were my imagination brawlers. Had Castle Greyskull, He-Man, Skeletor, Man-At-Arms, Moss man... They battled Optimus Prime, Bumble Bee, Soundwave, Starscream...shit I Was a spoiled child lol

James Gibson

Fun episode! I’m definitely the almost 50yo who loves this movie (mostly from childhood nostalgia and college aged bad movie fun), but totally see its flaws.

RJ Cunningham

HA! Oh man I could make a list of the movies/scenes I’ve cried to that would elicit laughs.

Rod

My kids love to play a game any time we watch movies. It’s called “Will Dad Cry?” They win the time. 😅

Enrico Palazzo

I saw this twice in the cinema in 1987! I was only 11 though. Fucking awful film. I’ll be putting it on this evening.

Matthew Lloyd

“if the mountain won't go to Mohammed, then Mohammed must come to the Mountain” i thought it was a well known saying. Basically means if a person refuses to yield to your wishes or meet you halfway, you must adapt, compromise, or find an alternative way to achieve your goals. Saying "the mountain comes to Mohammed" is like you dont have to adapt or compromise.

Barista Bran

Paranormal Activity might be the perfect amount of nothing happening for a commentary track! Lotta room for yuckin it up about how terrible it is

chris pike

I saw the play and it was both better than you’d think, and still not good. Lol

Deano Rezzz

I’ve seen this movie twice. I wish i remember what happened because I must now watch it again for this episode 🤦🏾‍♂️

Busiris

I'm glad this episode exists so the gang could explain the plot to me (I was too distracted by Dolph's exposed chest to pay attention to anything else). This joke falls apart with scrutiny because he's missing from the movie for outrageously long stretches of time.

Chaz Keracher

Speaking of Flash Gordon, that flick would make an excellent WLM episode!

Ben Sharpe

this is Skeletonivishism

Kemper

It'd also make an awesome commentary.

Dr. Albert Beck

I was a big He-Man toy fan in the early 80's. I was 15 when this came out. I was already way too old for this. BTW I am 54 and won't yell about incorrect facts.

TheBestMike

Has anyone metioned James Tolkan's sick ass jacket??

John Locke

I avoided this movie for 40 years. The trailer looked horrible and as a kid I wanted no part of it. Regretably I watched so I could increase my enjoyment of the podcast episode. Why does He-Man have a gun? And why doesn't he have super strength? He's just Dolph running around half naked with a cheap sword.

John Locke

So would Flesh Gordon.

John Locke

I was ten and none of my friends watched nor did I. I looked awful. Plus it starred the guy who killed Apollo. I bet if Arnold played He-Man it would have better.
