“I love the setup, I love the whole idea of the wrong man here...” - EricOn this month’s We ❤️ Movies episode, we’re getting in the Spielberg mood in anticipation of Disclosure Day by chatting about one of his big sci-fi thrillers of the early-aughts, Minority Report!

Was it the right move for this movie to forgo a non-stop action vibe? What did the production designers get right about our near future? Was this the last great Max von Sydow performance? Is this one of the more not-great haircuts Tom Cruise has had in a movie? Didn’t we need a few more scenes with Colin Farrell? Should that creepy guy be working in the pre-cog pool alone? And how much wood is being wasted by this machine crafting all these ornate wooden balls? PLUS: Ralph Kramden gets locked in the pre-crime jail!

Minority Report stars Tom Cruise, Colin Farrell, Samantha Morton, Steve Harris, Neal McDonough, Lois Smith, Tim Blake Nelson, Arye Gross, Mike Binder, Jessica Harper, Peter Stormare, William Mapother, and Max von Sydow as Lamar Burgess; directed by Steven Spielberg.

Ok, I’m going to be that guy: Tintin isn’t French, it’s Belgian! It’s Belgium’s most famous export (after beer, fries and chocolate).

Jan

Never liked this movie. The saturated look or bleached look ruins the movie completely - makes it grainy & creepy or eerie. And it’s too long & exorcist Max is annoying. Tom Cruise is not good & why does this movie love Blade runner??

James

Pretty sure I went to college with Max von Sydow‘s character in this movie.

Matt

Millennial Von Sydow is instant all timer bit

Matt Reid

Yes, on Blankman!

RJ Cunningham

Thank you for being that guy, I can now be a smidge cooler for not having to be that guy. I’m a big fan of Tintin through a college course (I watched the show as a kid), but the dark side of Tintin’s publication history is purely a reflection on enormously dark parts of Belgian history

Stewart Moncure

Millennial Fanboy Max Von Sydow really would have boasted about the image quality of blu-rays over DVDs.

:static noise: Copy that We Hate Movies. You are GO for Mercy in Worst of 2026 month. We repeat you are GO for Mercy in Worst of 2026 month. Gahd luck and good speed gentlemen. :static noise:

I saw Always in the theater and really liked it. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Kuato (and the freedom brigade)

Come on guys, you can't expect an 80 year old man to get over a divorce that happened 60 years ago! Jeez!

Todd B

The takeaway I got from the Steven Spielberg cuckiverse was that, deep down, he never forgave himself for cutting that 'Hooper is shtupping Mrs. Brody' story from Jaws and he's been trying to compensate ever since.

Cody Downs

Fun note: ALWAYS and TANGO & CASH were the last 2 films ever widely theatrically released in 1989 -- and of the 80s! That said, I personally have found ALWAYS my least-liked Spielberg film (yes, I prefer HOOK & READY PLAYER ONE over it; to each their own) and over the last decade or so and (especially with Letterboxd) that film (shockingly) has had a reappraisal. Just too damn cornball for my tastes.

The ending was all in Tom Cruise's head. They say when you go in all your desires come true. He is able to pull off an intricate sting operation with his wife. He gets back with his wife and they have a replacement kid and all of the precogs are free. All exactly what he wanted

chris pike

Yeah, I’m sure I would not like it if I revisited it, but I was super into Spielberg and Holly Hunter at the time.

JK

Hadn't seen this in years and I also immediately thought of the Children of Men house lol

Ed Harris

Love this one as well, though I agree that Catch Me if You Can is the better film.

Tim O'

Andrew mentioned Night of the Juggler... I think I know what to request for the next LRM. Completely insane movie.

Bryn

I like this movie, but I hate how it looks. The brown/grey pallate is so off putting for me.

Jason

When they were joking about a video game for The Whale, all I could think of was Katamari Damacy, except with Brendan Frasier’s character as the ball.

Matthew Lloyd

Is thisnthe most the guys have hated a we love movies lol?

Alethia St. Joan

“Bottle of red, bottle of white, whatever gets me laid tonight!”

Alethia St. Joan

I saw this on a pristine 35mm print at MOMI last summer, and the bleached-out saturated look was much more subdued than I remembered - the film was actually quite warmly colorful in many scenes!

Jaime Lee Ezell

I still quote Blankman sometimes! “You wouldn’t understanddd”

Mike Kling

I can't believe Spielberg took his name off Little Giants.

David

Nice one boys. Millennial Von Sydow had me pulling the car over to finish laughing.

Emily Rosen

I remember re-watching this one a couple years ago and clocking "Hey, Von Sydow would be a Millenial!" So when I started this episode I was really hoping they'd make a bit of it, and boy I was not disappointed!

Matthew Lloyd

She gets the eyeball and gun from the box of evidence she see when talking to Sydow

Kemper

Something I've always wondered about... In the TV show Homicide (Based on the non-fiction book by David Simon.) the high profile murder cases were always referred to as 'red balls'. So did the red ball idea in this come from that? Plus, Homicide is set in Baltimore and Baltimore is mentioned several times in Minority Report. Coincidence? I think not.....

Derek Baxter

Andrew feeling the need to defend a $45 Taco Bell order has me laughing. There is no need to defend that, sir. The world is on fire. There is no judgment.

johnny stocker

I agree with the boys about this getting soggy, but Senor Spielbergo was still throwing good heat here man. Love the Von Sydow stuff all throughout. The young Xers and old Millenials that actually survive until the 2060s are gonna have some frigging stories to tell, that's for sure.

Brandon Taper

In case Steve reads these and cares about little homages: The male witness judge in Minority Report is none other than Albert Brooks's judge in Defending Your Life!

MarkNM

This was one of the last movies I saw in theaters with my Dad, so I'm naturally biased. But such a fun flick. Spielberg just stretching his legs and going full popcorn again.

MarkNM

Thank you for reminding me that the streaming version of Minority Report in 4k looks like absolute dog shit because of all the original film grain. The 20-year-old DVD somehow looked better. The scene where Cruise talks to Von Sydow in the dark, midway through the movie, is so bad that the still image of the wall behind them looks like it's constantly moving and flickering. Stay physical friends!

Lar

My 10th grade English teacher showed us this after we read Oedipus and you know what? He was right that this movie cribs A LOT from the play.

Jaime Lee Ezell

I do appreciate Andrew’s correct pronunciation of Tintin

B Rob

Please do Blankman!!! (follow it up with Meteor Man)

nadia
