“Folks, we’re gonna talk about the pizza here for a while…” - Eric

On this month’s We ❤️ Movies, the 2026 Summer Blockbuster Extravaganza has us chatting about one of the best comic book movies of all time, Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2!

How is this impossible pizza delivery situation even remotely Peter Parker’s fault? How incredible is J.K. Simmons in these original Raimi films? Who else was getting tired of Peter pining over Mary Jane? Why does this dummy ride his little motorbike to the theater? Wouldn’t it have been cool if Man-Wolf showed up here (or in part three)? Is Alfred Molina giving one of the finest comic book villain performances ever put to film? And there are fewer scenes harder to watch than this super-sad birthday party sequence we have here, no? PLUS: How much secret drinking is Aunt May doing in this movie?

Spider-Man 2 stars Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, James Franco, Alfred Molina, Rosemary Harris, J.K. Simmons, Donna Murphy, Daniel Gillies, Dylan Baker, Bill Nunn, Aasif Mandvi, Willem Dafoe, Cliff Robertson, Ted Raimi, Elizabeth Banks, and Bruce Campbell as Snooty Usher; directed by the great Sam Raimi.

Hell yeah! I had no idea this was the WLM. I’m pumped.

Craig

I agree with Chris that 3 needed to do something different. As good as this movie is, it felt like a rehash of the original to me. Not just the MJ stuff, but the whole mentor-turns-villain plot.

Conor K

Hell yes, gonna be a great commute home listening to this.

Emil Svensson

Only the Nobel peace prize is handed over in Norway; the rest in Sweden, as Alfred Nobel himself was Swedish.

I was such a snooty little comic book shit when this came out. I hated it in theaters. I don't even know WHY, but man I had a chip on my shoulder about it. Maybe everyone else liked it so I had to be contraian. TBF I was working at a multiplex at the time and I think I just hated dealing with the crowds and having to listen to Dashboard Confessionals "Vindicated" while cleaning theaters. Watched it again like 10 years later and could not have been more wrong. Phenomenal movie. Right up there with Batman 89 for me.

Nick Viviano

This has been a long-anticipated episode for me and it didn't disappoint. I'm with Chris on Batman Returns being my ultimate favorite comic book movie (maybe because my parents took me to see it in theaters when I was *definitely* a little too young) but it left such a lasting impression that's only gotten better with age. Spider-Man 2, however, was maybe my favorite cinema experience of my teenage years, and the sincerity and style of it still put so many superhero movies to shame 22 years on. With that said, the only thing more joyful than hearing the guys gush over this will be hearing them tear apart Far From Home later this month. Leaving the theater on that one was the emptiest I've ever felt coming out of one of these things. Yes, hate is easier than love (and far less productive) but the hate is flowing through me.

Dennis Stack

Rewatched this for the episode and that scene on the train still blows my hair back. IDGAF how old it makes me sound to say that they sure don't make em like they used to.

MarkNM

Damn, Peter, Ursula was RIGHT THERE. Marry the slumlord's hot daughter! Then you inherit the slums! The Kushner Gambit!

WarOfTheBees

I can fix Spider-Man 3 in one easy step: Harry Osborn finds the Venom symbiote in Norman's stuff at the end of Spider-Man 2. You can still do the sixties stuff: Harry and Peter, both Spider-Mans, one good and one "dark" competing for MJ's hand? I'm signing up. But yeah no one involved in Spider-Man 3 wanted to be there.

Joel Myers

Really loved Steve’s little taste of his hot summer single, “Wearing Jeans in Heaven” that we get in this episode

David Thompson

The Aunt May as a fall down drunk is a cracking bit 🤣

jribs

“I need to start having extreme takes to get mentioned on a podcast.” **20 minutes later** “Shes just head down on the fucking table! Bitch can’t handle her drink!” - we love you Eric

Barista Bran

I remember really enjoying multiverse of madness in theaters. Definitely helped by the 100mg gummy I had before the screening.

jribs

Maybe I missed it over howling but I need drunk Aunt May trying to get $100 from a bank because the teller didn’t say “hello”.

JK

That Dashboard song took me right back. Yikes. Fucking Yellowcard and The Ataris on that soundtrack too

Mike Kling

Do Peter & Aunt May have a humiliation kink.

Christopher Totten

They stopped doing the 30-minutes or less delivery because a driver died in a car wreck trying to make it on time.

Joe Barrett

Great episode.... I kid you nottttt

Emil Svensson

I realise that correcting someone online always comes off as though you're offended or mad at someone, so I tend not to do it. This was a weak moment for me 😔 Especially since, in the grand scheme of things, it's a pretty darn harmless mix-up compared to the wild shit people put out there online.

Jason

Have those egg heads on the Noble committee ever thought about how bad astronauts are at laying pipe? No, of course not. So you go that on them.

Jason

Uh, Pete, not everything in my apartment can be fixed by you telling me that you’ll “be there in 10 minutes to web that shit up.”

Matthew Lloyd

Leaves her lying in his sticky triumph.

Winson Paine

The subway fight was my old commute (not a huge brag, it's the east side of the Loop and it is a lot of people's commute) and it fuckin weirded me out a lot. Careful observers will note the train interior shots are the old style cars they are retiring and you could mostly find on the blue line at the time, which presumably is why they sold them to Raimi to destroy the shit out of. Not as bad GOD DAMN THIS IS CHICAGO as Dark Knight returns, but pretty good.

Rose Esposito

I'm forced to point out that yes, Jin *did* make it off the island on Lost, only to return to it and drown inside a damn submarine alongside Sun!! Yes, I'm still mad about it!

Matt Watterson

You know that dagger is stored in a rosewood, velvet-lined case when not being used.

Infinite Terror

If you take the Spider-Man stuff out of 3, it's a very bizarre but charming slice of life dramedy where Franco rises to his peers' a bit. I know I sound crazy but I just rewatched 3 and had a good time. I don't know. Fuck me.

Smaug

Steve is still trying to make "devoed" happen after all these years...good for you man, good for you.

Billie Jackson

Flesh blob Aunt May? Just like that episode of Monsters in which Eugene Levy had his skeleton removed! NYC locations mentioned! Yes!

Billie Jackson

And historically that webbing lasts around an hour, so is gonna break again almost immediately.

Billie Jackson

Comics John Jameson becomes another character after the initial Man-Wolf phase. He's transported to another dimension connected to the stone attached to him, the Godstone, and is the sword wielding Stargod. So this Peter would be even more inadequate. The Spider-Man issue in which Man-Wolf debuts has an audio version as part of the old Power Records line, which is on YouTube. There were a number of those Power Records, which were a 45 that came with the comic they were adapting. There were iirc 4 or so ST TOS audios among them.

Chaz Keracher

This is my take on Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. I did read Ultimate Spider-Man for a while so I think he is a more comic accurate Spider-Man, he just hasn’t been in a movie as good as Spider-Man 2.

Dave Waters

Plus the Doc Ock kidnapping Aunt May scene was like watching a comic book come to life and it's still cool over 20 years later.

Frank Grimes

I’m curious how the Punisher is going to play in a PG-13 sandbox. Daredevil is going to show up too, probably a Fantastic Four cameo. Jean Grey is in it.

Frank Grimes

I wish they had used the conflict in the comics of Peter not liking that MJ smokes cigarettes

nadia

hey if it matters at all, he’s definitely made it a staple in my lexicon!

ShaunTrek

He only made it to the freighter, didn't he? Like never the mainland?

John Locke

Here's a better version of this film: Directed by Sam in 1982, Rated R, and staring Bruce Campbell as Doc Ock. Spiderman can be anyone because he's gonna get ripped apart half way through the movie.

John Locke

I nearly crashed my car from laughing.

Box Sets

Last Jedi was the UNDOING of Star Wars as a whole

John Spencer

Not for nothing, 29 minutes or less on eight pizzas that take AT LEAST 30 minutes to make and cook.
