This episode was originally released as an episode of our Star Trek re-cap show, The Nexus on December 29, 2020“I love how he says ‘Black Hole’ in this movie” - Eric on Elder Spock

On this special WHM Vault Unlock, we’re adding some Star Trek to the 2026 Summer Blockbuster Extravaganza with a lengthy discussion about the better-than-we-remembered 2009 reboot, Star Trek.

Were the lens flares really that bad? Are we still cool with the Beasties on the soundtrack? How rad was that Sulu swordplay? And Bones is just throwing around "hobgoblin" in this movie? PLUS: Remember, this was recorded in August of 2020, so the months of lockdown madness are in full-effect. It's probably why this episode was three hours long!Star Trek stars Leonard Nimoy, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Eric Bana, Bruce Greenwood, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, John Cho, Anton Yelchin, Ben Cross, Winona Ryder, Chris Hemsworth, Jennifer Morrison, and Clifton Collins Jr.; directed by J. J. Abrams.

Come hang out in Vegas with us this summer as we do a three-night stand at ST:LV to celebrate 60 years of Star Trek and 10 years of The Nexus! We’ll be at the convention Thursday, Friday and Saturday night doing three Nexus shows on Wrath of Kahn, Generations, and First Contact! Best part is, you don’t need to have a convention pass to attend, each show is ticketed separately. Click through to snag your tix now!

“I SAW IT HAPPEN—DON’T TELL ME IT DIDN’T HAPPEN!”

The best of the three. Great cast but they never really got a great script. Shame we’re not going to see them together again.

Matt

Did anyone else immediately perk up when Steve said "before we get too out there..." during the opening because you' thought its was a VHS Trailer game you forgot about, or are you normal?

How has it been 6 years since this episode?? Love this ep, the boys are just having fun, living in quote city and it's the best when they are in their element! Definitely rewatching this and into darkness tonight. Cheers gang 🍻

Can only imagine if we got the Starfleet Academy show you guys thought of back then compared to the mopbot garbage of a show we did get

Oh, the difference a few years makes... Listening to this in 2020 when the word Bones is said, in my head, "oh yeah, Bones McCoy" Listening to this in 2026 when the word Bones is said, in my head, 🎶 the bones are their money, so are the worms 🎶

The universe still needs to manifest Andrew’s flub: JJ Abram’s soft reboot of 8MM.

Enrico Palazzo

The dog belonged to Admiral Archer, also known as Scott Bakula

I didn't remember this being 3 hours long, holy shit.

Fun story with the “Doctor Captain Pike” joke: my dad is ex-military, got his doctorate after leaving the army, and then rejoined the defense department as a civilian consultant later in life, and he would occasionally joke that people should refer to him as “Dr. Captain Cyr”, especially when people that only knew him as a civilian tried to act like he had no idea how the military worked.

Billie Jackson

Pine has kind of an early Val Kilmer vibe in a good amount of this, including the Real Genius+Top Secret VK.

The red matter fluid ball also appears in the Alias TV series, though the apocalyptic thing it does there is completely different. Sulu's daughter from Generations on the Enterprise-B eventually replaces Alan Ruck's Harriman as captain of that ship in ST books and is bi and poly.

Matthew Lloyd

The problem with Abrams films is that there is required reading. The explanation on why Neros ship is like that was in a prequel comic, basically neros crew finds an abandoned Romulan base with some experimental borg tech and they plug it into their ship and it morphs it.

Scotty essentially killed Admiral Archers dog.
