“This felt like a season of a television show” - Steve

On the season sixteen finale of WHM, we’re bringing the Summer Blockbuster Extravaganza to a close with a talk about the kinda-good/kinda-not Homecoming follow-up, Spider-Man: Far From Home!

How boring are these Elemental villains? Did they really need to do the European Vacation trope? Should they have instead taken the story to Hollywood to have Spider-Man tangle with the actual Quentin Beck special F/X whiz guy from the comics? How great is Gyllenhaal here? Did the MCU ever really grapple with The Blip aftermath? And did we really need all the S.H.I.E.L.D. shenanigans in this one? PLUS: An extended rant on the trials and tribulations of using the bathroom on a plane!

Spider-Man: Far From Home stars Tom Holland, Samuel L. Jackson, Marisa Tomei, Jon Favreau, Zendaya, Jacob Battalion, Tony Revolori, Angourie Rice, Remy Hill, Martin Starr, J.B. Smoove, Cobie Smulders, J.K. Simmons, and Jake Gyllenhaal as Mysterio; directed by Jon Watts.

Come hang out in Vegas with us this summer as we do a three-night stand at ST:LV to celebrate 60 years of Star Trek and 10 years of The Nexus! We’ll be at the convention Thursday, Friday and Saturday night doing three Nexus shows on Wrath of Khan, Generations, and First Contact! Best part is, you don’t need to have a convention pass to attend, each show is ticketed separately. Click through to snag your tix now!

I actually think this movie works as a funny high school comedy broken up by some incredibly bland action set pieces.

Evan

Hmmm. You know, that's true. A lot of people were probably finishing when the blip happened. 😅

Paul

Pulp Fiction- hell yeah. 👏

Rob Brown

I don’t remember if it was brought up in the commentary you guys did at all, but No Way Home felt like (and probably was) the most Covid-compromised movie, as much of the supporting cast is sidelined, everybody just showed up looking like whatever they looked like that day, and it feels like all the returning names had about four days of availability, so no one ever seems to really interact with one another. For as much as they were trying to do, it felt like an incredibly small movie. Fast forward a little over a year, and that’s exactly what that third Ant-Man movie was, where you had what felt like maybe seven real actors who spent five minutes in the real world before disappearing into green screen land for the next two hours, and there’s no sign of any of the other characters that made those other movies so fun.

Rob Brown

Had any of you watched The Leftovers at all? It wrapped up right around the time that Infinity War came out, and it’s all about the world dealing with an event where a significant portion of the world’s population just suddenly disappears in a mysterious way. There’s even a department that deals with suspected fraud similar to what Martin Starr’s wife committed in Far From Home. It’s pretty great.

Sarah Montgomery

Tobey looked so awkward and lifeless in that movie, I assumed he had some serious medical issue.

Todd B

Good news, bad news - Good news: Clownhouse actually is a movie Bad news: You probably don't want to watch it, cause it is the scene of an honest to God crime (hint - check out the director)

Mark D Myers

I honestly hate this movie. I just was so annoyed by everything in it.

We Hate Movies

I watched the first season and it didn't grab me but then everyone said it got way better so maybe some day I'll go back, especially since I've been totally Carrie Coon-pilled lately after devouring all three seasons of The Gilded Age. It also took me a moment to realize you weren't talking about The Holdovers lol - Andrew

We Hate Movies

"THAT'S the movie?!" - Me, out loud, to no one - Andrew

Matt

Fat guy's burden, Lloyd my man. Fat guy's burden.

Chris

Imagine getting blipped mid-shit and you come back to an occupied toilet

Chris

I looked it up and WOW

MarkNM

You guys should combine the Super Fun Happy Sugar Booze taste test with a BARFLYmentary for full irony. Not a power hour though. I take no pleasure in death.

Scott Plackemeier

Speaking of comedies with globe trotting sequels how did we not get "An American Pie in Europe?"

Matt

That's kind of just Eurotrip?

Joel Myers

Someone should make a compilation of everytime Eric says “it’s okay to like a movie” followed immediately by Chris going “BUT NOT THIS ONE!” 😂

MarkNM

Also an "I kid you nohhhht" Supercut

Sehnsucht666

Does Shanghai Knights count as a European Vacation trope?

Charles Grodin's Toupee is Scared Stupid

Steve is right, this is where the MCU starts to get off track. This treats a literal Rapture as a fucking joke where society would just break if that happens. If the in universe characters won't take this shit seriously, why should we?

Busiris

The only thing I associate this movie with is what I experienced seeing it in IMAX. A pretty packed screening, I recall a guy maybe two seats to my left kept gingerly taking out his phone and taking a photo any time Mysterio was on screen. I visualized him occasionally opening his photo roll later on to look at his buddy Mysterio so he could get through the rest of the day. Or maybe he just liked Jake Gyllenhaal.

Paul

I have to acknowledge that Jacob Batalon may be the most successful Filipino American actor working today, simply by virtue of co-starring in the MCU Spider-Man films. And he’s a chubby schlub too. He really lucked out—and good for him. 👏

Hard To Gwil

I recently sold a VHS of Clownhouse for $75 to some creep online. Be careful out there folks, the weirdos have money.

Todd B

On the one hand, I'm all for preserving rare media and getting the appeal of out of print. But sometimes - Jesus fuck, let it die.

Rose Esposito

Steve's determined to play a show at the (Tony) Rivoli

Dave Waters

"TONY STARK GOT A BLOW JOB IN A CAVE! WITH A BUNCH OF SCRAPS!" You guys are forgetting Madagascar: Europe's Most Wanted, Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties and one of the Despicable Me movies. The "go to Europe" trope is alive and well in kid's movies.

Dave Waters

I thought the Venice scenes were great and the water monster scenes were good on a big, loud movie screen. It was different than the umpteenth superhero Manhattan battle scene. Plus, the trippy Mysterio illusion scene was like something from the comics. Maybe not the best Spidey flick, but it took some fun chances.

Mr. Nobody

Nia Dacosta catching strays at the end of the episode, but The Bone Temple is one of my favorite movies this year!

Seth Cerand

I feel for Martin. My ex-wife ran off with someone from her hiking group too. Least my life since then hasn't sucked as much as watching Spider-Man Far From Home.

Matt Watterson

I came here to say this. It absolutely counts as far as I’m concerned.

RJ Cunningham

What's the deal with the idea/word "home" and this series of Spiderman movies?

Dave Waters

I like it. It's a theme. They can't really do 1, 2, 3 anymore for Spider-Man.

Dave Waters

I remember 2019- we got 3 MCU movies in 5 months. (Captain Marvel, Endgame, Spider-Man) There were trailers for this before Endgame came out, so of course we knew Peter was getting blipped back.

Kemper

One of the many things that bugged me about this was trying to figure out when Tony Stark actually built his network of killer drones. Because if he had it in Infinity War, why not use it when Dr. Strange gets kidnapped? So he must have built it after IW but obviously before he dies in Endgame, right? Then why not use it in that desperate last battle against Thanos? And along the same line - Why is Tony Stark leaving control of his killer drone network to Peter Parker, when as far as he knew, Peter Parker was dead? Did his will read, "In the event that I die fighting Thanos, but we have managed to bring back Peter Parker, he gets all my killer drones. If Peter is still dead... eh, Pepper can have them."

Charles Grodin's Toupee is Scared Stupid

Like the white slavers that they are, Disney stuck the word "home" to the subtitles to show the world that Spidey was back "home" with Marvel.

David

It shames me that I spent an afternoon thinking more about this than doing my actual job, but does Agent Cody Banks: Destination London count??? (Also, Steve, agree to disagree that Nightcrawler is not a good movie).

Sam

Came to also politely (and strongly!) disagree about Nightcrawler.

RJ Cunningham

The Pulp Fiction episode actually is my most looked forward to episode….maybe ever?

We Hate Movies

Taking pictures of the movie screen, no matter the reason, is supreme King Loser shit... - Andrew

We Hate Movies

I watched it within the last few years and I was genuinely surprised how funny it was. Nowhere near as much cringe as I would've assumed. Nor, for that matter, as much cringe as their likely is in the film Road Trip. - Andrew

We Hate Movies

We had a ball revisiting the film, warts and all -- and there are warts, to be sure! lol - Andrew

Stefan

Chris Cackling at only mommy daddy's getting blowies is hilarious lmao

RJ Cunningham

I have a feeling Fat Guy’s Burden is going to enter the public lexicon and only we will know the origin

Dustin Despres

Cheers guys! Hope y'all enjoy some well-deserved time off. Looking forward to S17.

Hard To Gwil

I completely agree Chris. I collect a lot of weird old VHS but that director and his entire filmography can get fucked.

Chris Preston

Marvel had these moments where they could have done something that makes sense. The agents of shield tv show had a whole plot showing why the avengers started age of ultron attacking the hydra base. There is literally a line saying send in the avengers to Maria hill. Then in the final season they set up shield in space. In falcon and the winter soldier the motivation of the villains is being pissed because the blip messed up housing, food and the world economy. They have these chances to make things interesting or understandable and they bail on them. They also talk about how the avengers don’t get paid. Falcon was broke. Tony let him stay at the avengers base and eat for free and gave him weapons but there was no paycheck. Also eurotrip is a pseudo sequel to Road Trip.

Ben Sharpe

Every time Andrew mentions European Vacation im picturing Spider man running into Clark Griswald who is working for Shield until he realizes hes on the wrong side. So he helps Peter Parker and the Avengers

Ben Sharpe

Who would be the President of the Us during this time?

Matthew Lloyd

My personal headcannon is that Phillip Seymore Hoffman played uncle Ben.

Matthew Lloyd

So if you cum during the blip does the splooge get blipped with you?

DMAC

Prague is beautiful, and they have a really cool Horror themed bar, the gang should do a sacredy cats from there Amsterdam was a lot of fun. Always nice to hit up a coffee shop to green up, have a beer, and then chow down on some döner.
