On this edition of our Star Wars Gleep Glossary, we're learning all about the popular knock-off Han Solo, Dash Rendar!

How many of us out there wasted days of our lives playing Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire on Nintendo 64? How cool was it playing as Rendar, the Corellian little rich boy who went on to chase a career in the Imperial Navy instead of inheriting his family's shipping business! His brother accidentally flew a sabotaged ship into an Imperial museum and got his whole family on Palpatine's shit list! Rendar would go on to switch sides and carry out several missions with Luke Skywalker, while also flirting a lot with Leia while Han wasn't around, before he faked his own death in order to do more missions or some such? PLUS: Boba Fett and Rendar get wasted on acid-dipped death sticks!

Gleep Glossary: A Star Wars Story is a show where the guys try to honor the history and legacy of Star Wars characters, most of whom we've been told don't matter anymore!

Thank you for being so incredible and continuing to support this weird, wild adventure we're on! You make this all possible! We know you have lots of options when choosing which pods you listen to and we very much appreciate you carving out some time for us!

OH Yes! I loved playing Shadows of the Empire on N64 as a kid. That rocky planet with all the cliffs and when you end up fighting Bobba Fett 👌🏾

Is there a singular snowflakes chance in hell, where we could get a livestream of the boys building a Lego Star Wars set? A Very Special Non-sponsored Lego Christmas Episode of Gleep Glossary. And then below "along with " then you put everyone's name

I could tell that voice was Mark Hamill. 98 hes still Joker . And he would talk normalish. Like joker would do an Irish accent sometimes. And it sounds like that voice without the accent

Adam Ray

To this day I still curse IG-88 and that fucking Ord Mantell level. I don't even remember defeating him. So I very well may have cheated and found a code to skip levels.

Adam Ray

And Hamill actually made that Bert Kreischer Machine pile of shit watchable. When he was on screen.

As long as we all admit that part of the reason to watch would be to see who oopsies and shatters an 1100 piece star destroyer into rubble.

Matt

A Vanishing Point remake with Mark Hamill in the Super Soul role

When I worked at Blockbuster in 97 and we got the N64 demo kiosk, I was still young enough to lose my shit over any scrap of new Star Wars (but old enough to be embarrassed by it now) SOTE showed up around Christmas and blew my pudgy little mind. And I bought the book. And the toys. Possibly the soundtrack. "How did you keep the lustful packs of horny women off you, Mark?" you might ask. Wasn't easy! But I somehow found a way.

I'm sure there will probably be a GG next month during the summer hiatus, but fare thee well Sweet Sixteen! It's been quite a ride!

Sarah Montgomery

Don't feel embarrassed by being excited about Star Wars from 1996-1999. You had to be there. As RedLetterMedia put it: "Never again will anything be so highly anticipated (...or as disappointing)." I was too young for the first Star Warses, but I played the 90s games, especially TIE Fighter, so I was PUMPED! We all were. Those remain good memories. All 90s Star Wars prior to May 1999 felt great. EDIT: Except for the re-issues. Those were all pretty bad, though watching them in a crowded theater opening night DID feel great.

Sarah Montgomery

Ever time I hear the name Dash Rendar, my first memories are of making him jump off a cliff just high enough that the camera switches to catch him falling face-first to his death. Along with Seeker cam, and playing a whole level in map mode, there were always so many extra ways to have fun with games back then. That sounds effect could have become a new Wilhelm Scream.

MarkNM

The way that Lucas put the hunger back out there was pretty masterful. By the time the Special Edition trailer was in theaters I was practically rabid.

Sarah Montgomery

The longest level, by far, had the most boring music. Fine, for five minutes. Not for forty.

James

Nearly spit out my coffee this morning when Chris started singing the “Sweet Sixteen” song. Well done!

I.C. Weiner

Being the dumb kid that I was, when the ship emerged with the name "Slave One" I assumed Boba Fett had a slave piloting it and I thought that was extremely fucked up.

Deano Rezzz

I didn’t mind the long level at all. Back then, home was in a very remote part of the world and getting new games took forever. A game that had long stages and puzzles that took a while to finish was very much appreciated. It’s why I also loved Ocarina of Time.

WarOfTheBees

Shadows of the Empire was an event and don't let anyone tell you different

Brent Cowan

I always got Dash Rendar mixed up with another rogue school graduate and 90s Star Wars video game protagonist, Kyle Kataran.

Charles Grodin's Toupee is Scared Stupid

You gotta give Lucas credit for the way he got us on the hype train starting with Shadows of the Empire, which led the special editions all the way to the prequels. Genius move.

Rose Esposito

Man, remember when The Life of Chuck had Oscar buzz for like 15 seconds? I really liked it. :\

Blake Jordan

Dash Rendar's voice actor John Cygan was on an episode of the X-Files. Don't remember which one, though.

Billie Jackson

The SW EU had a future Skywalker who had a death sticks problem, and was kind of a dirtbag smuggler, jedi and possibly a sith at some point. Cade Skywalker. The evil AI Scourge is a modern SW OT era villain that was v powerful and also fought by the Sith. Both are kind of interesting.

Billie Jackson

Steve is being put down but will also be back? It's like A Steve's Purpose.

Winson Paine

My hottest hot take: Kyle Katarn > Dash Rendar

Smaug

I bought the PC (Steam) version of this game during the Christmas sale for $1.50. It's fun with an Xbox or Steam controller

Mark D Myers

You know what was a good movie that was mark Hamil happened to be in? The guyver.

Dr. Albert Beck

I owned a sporting apparel store in a mall that was 3 store down from Babbages. I remember that morning. It was a long line of BO and nicotine.

Zora McBride

Best, shide-show, ever!!! Have been temporarily on a lower tier, but no more!! Three new GGs are mine at last! Love this char--I had Shadows of the Empire on cassette as a kid. Can't wait to see a belove'd character somehow be integrated with cum, ... ... Eric. Love you guys; don't forget to wear the blue. Tear the fascists down. Best of luck in Las Vegas!! *** Zora
