“I saw [this movie] at 11 years old, opening weekend” - Eric

On this edition of We ❤️ Movies, we’re chatting about one of the landscape-shifting indie films of the 1990’s, Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction!

How incredible is this soundtrack? Have Samuel L. Jackson and John Travolta had better chemistry with any other actors? Did a Jersey City realtor actually give QT the idea for the foot fetish discussion? And Lord Almighty, this movie did not need that director’s cameo! PLUS: What were they thinking with that Seinfeld/Pulp Fiction promo?

Pulp Fiction stars Samuel L. Jackson, John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Tim Roth, Amanda Plummer, Bruce Willis, Christopher Walken, Harvey Keitel, Phil LaMarr, Frank Whaley, Paul Calderon, Rosanna Arquette, Eric Stoltz, Steve Buscemi, Kathy Griffin, Peter Greene, Alexis Arquette, Julia Sweeney, and Ving Rhames Marsellus Wallace; directed by Quentin Tarantino.

Tarantino’s best.

Nuña Bisness

Something to listen to at work tomorrow 😭

David

Only half an hour in so it might be mentioned later, but Denzel famously gave QT a spray for his use of the "N" slur on the set of Crimson Tide... in front of the entire crew.

Simon McCormack

As someone who was a truly insufferable Tarantino fanboy, this is going to be a psychologically tough listen. I need to bake a big chocolate apology cake for every single person who had to interact with me in the nineties.

j

I always figured Vince didn't worry about hearing someone in the kitchen because he thought it was Marsellus, who had gone out to get donuts - they were staking out Butch's place together

WarOfTheBees

Steve mentioning that Seinfeld promo activated my memory like Jason Bourne (only fatter and sadder)

johnny stocker

Can't wait to listen today, also good luck in Vegas, gang! Don't let Eric accidentally roofie you and send the four of you off on a series of wild shennanigans...

Ed Harris

Saw this twice in the theater when it first came out. Still my favorite QT apart from Jackie Brown.

Matt

Ok fess up - who had the poster on their wall in college? I did. AND a Scarface one. Oof.

MarkNM

We can't leave one of them on the roof of the casino, so I guess special guest star Clint Howard gets to fifth wheel the first part of the adventure.

Matt

I wouldn't argue, but for me it's OUATIH

Jack B. Baker

I'm super stoked to listen to this one. One of my top 5 movies of all time. I saw this 4 times in the theater, the summer before I started college. Every time I went, someone loudly left the theater at one point or another. The needle to the heart scene being 2 (accompanied by gagging both times), the grape scene another, and during my 4th viewing, one young black queen loudly announced "Ain't no n-words here!" during Tarentino's DNS rant and making a grand exit. It's the only newly released movie I've seen in theaters more than once. I was already into surf music, too, so hearing that on the soundtrack made it even cooler. I think aside from Tarentino's own dialog in the movie,it's damn near perfect.

Jonathan Lyons

Ok, hell yes, niche interest time. i always said to myself, if you guys did pulp fiction, I'd want to hear your thoughts on these thoughts. People kinda have a point about the storage line. It is about power and control in the situation in a narrative sense and a meta sense (that's why it is played by the director, right) These murderers have to just nod along with the diatribe and they're broken down further by having to strip, worry about blood towels, and then get sprayed down like prisoners (or maybe a particular riot...) And then even the guy with the power in that moment is doing it because his wife looms over him like he is looming over them. Ive always thought the slurs in the rest of the movie are all connected to the storage scene. And in a sense, it is to justify it but also to show that power is nonsense. Pulp fiction as a medium was about the power of words even if the yellowed papered presentation isn't exactly pretty or anywhere near perfect. I think pulp fiction, django unchained, and the hateful 8 show the thru line of QT understanding power and his growth from that understanding. "Black people only feel safe when white people are scared" he literally uses the abe letter to even the scales. And in the end, a black liar and a white racist are the only ones who could trust each other. Django has to become what he hates to defeat what he hates and save who he loves. And it's words that keep him from being sent to the mines. It's good writing. Lol the foot stuff is bullshit, though. It's like James Franco making a "school" for sex scenes. Oh yeah, I bet that is just about the art lol

Jack B. Baker

Bro, I had a MASSIVE Sam Jackson Jules poster, along with Travolta, Uma, and the Wolf 16 x 24s in my freshman dorm room, along with a 16 x 24 Mr. White Reservoir Dogs poster. My evangelical Christian roommate was appalled.

Jonathan Lyons

I think every college campus is like legally required to have a poster guy. Poster guys always did really well before the internet. They could sell them at a markup because young adults are real dumb lol ....I had one too. Unless it's a fight club poster, paying for it and not stealing it is fine lol

Matt

This comment reminded me I also had a Mr. Blonde poster with the "are you going to bark all day little doggie" quote on it. BRB dying of shame

Jacob Hunt

I put pulp fiction in the middle. I think basterds, Django, Kill bill, Hollywood and hateful eight are better. Also Jackie brown is his second worst other than death proof

Matthew Lloyd

Why do i have a memory of Travolta reading "oranges aren't the only fruit" on the toilet.

Les Whinen

I remember hearing that the reason why Travolta is always in the bathroom is because heroin addicts are constipated from the drugs.

RJ Cunningham

I think this is the best QT movie. How a movie ages is certainly a factor in overall rankings, but I’m a sucker for the sensation you get from the first time viewing holding supremacy over longevity. No Tarantino movie came close with its first (dozen) viewings as Pulp Fiction did for me. I remember well the Summer in which I first saw Pulp Fiction then borrowed my brothers VHS, and like an apostle walked around the neighborhood for the next week to show it to friends. A lot of parents at work, a lot of stolen vodka from said working parents, and a bunch of 16/17 year olds being enraptured by this masterpiece.

Matthew Lloyd

Mr Wolfs last job, do you think the guys saw Brad Pitt and George Clooneys "Wolfs"?

MarkNM

As much as Tarantino loves a badass moment, he also loves the de-mystifying of a badass. "Let's get into character," is such a great line. The growth of Jules, such as it is, is of a guy playing a persona that he realizes is hollow, and he doesn't want to be in that kind of movie anymore. He even describes it in the terms of Caine, another fictional character...while phonetically matching the biblical Cain--who was not his brother's keeper--cursed to walk the earth for the sin of murder, for which he can never atone. But he's trying. He's trying real hard.

MarkNM

Every time I watch this or Ed Wood, I briefly consider Sam Jackson v Martin Landau, and wonder "Was this guy really better than this guy?" They were both so gat dam good. I guess what I'm saying is, please do Ed Wood. You guys could probably go 4 hours just on Lugosi and Tor bits.

IDrinkSourMilk

Just started the episode but I had to chime in about the cigarette prices, I was a smoker in the 90s and $1.90 a pack was about regular price or even cheap. Unfiltered cigarettes were also still around, my buddy smoked Camel shorts at that time. I’m sure he has a Kane voice box by now.

KC Masterpiece

Awesome show, I’ve been waiting on this one for a long time. Fun facts / insight about this movie: - The guys discussed the what ifs behind Marcellus and the donuts. An idea I read a while ago made a lot of sense. So, we’re shown the scene where Butch lights up Vincent with the suppressed submachine gun (for the record, a MAC-10) in his apartment. Well, I always thought that the MAC-10 was Vincent’s, but a theory I read a while ago made a lot of sense - the MAC-10 belonged to Marcellus, as he had to back up Vincent to wait in Butch’s apartment (Marcellus was backing Vincent up because Jules quit the game, but he also might have taken Butch’s betrayal personally and wanted to get his hands dirty). Anyway, it’s breakfast time, so Marcellus left to get donuts. Marcellus was headed back to the apartment with the donuts when Butch blew Vincent away with Marcellus’ gun. It makes a lot of sense in my opinion. - Vincent calls Butch a “palooka” at the club. Merriam Webster defines “palooka” as “an incompetent boxer”, so that shows that Vincent knew what was going on with Butch being paid to throw the fight and took a dig at him. This movie is so well written… - QT loves to put character actors from old / cult films in little roles. One that I didn’t know about for a long time was Joe Pilato (RIPD) as a Dean Martin impersonator at Jackrabbit Slim’s. Pilato played Captain Rhodes in Romero’s Day of the Dead and apparently QT was a fan. Unfortunately, Pilato had a decent scene in Pulp that was eventually cut. - NOTE: I don’t know what words trigger automatic rejection in Patreon, so I used asterisks in the following comment. Yes, Peter Greene (Zed) died recently. A layman’s explanation of Greene’s cause of de*th was that he sh*t himself in the armpit and the bullet went into the chest cavity, ki**ing him almost instantly (most people don’t know it, but the armpit is a very “weak point” on the human body, due to the lack of any protection by bone and its proximity to important organs, specifically the heart). Now, that’s obviously a really strange place to sh**t oneself, so the operating theory that I read is that he was using a shoulder holster for his gun and he accidentally sh*t himself while either putting the gun in the holster or taking it out of the holster. FYI if you’re not a gun person - a popular movie where the main character utilizes a shoulder holster is John McClane in Die Hard With A Vengeance. Anyway, if this theory is true, it’s really tragic.

MarkNM

Really sad. It's how *spoiler* dies at the end of Colors, if I remember right. Wearing a vest, but the bullet slips in under his arm at the gap.

Jen L Greene

I bought a box of Fruit Brute a few years ago when Target released all the members of the cereal monster universe for Halloween. It did taste kind of like fruit loops. It was ok, but I never bought it again (if it was released again).

David Thompson

This has gotta be the most the guys have ever just quoted the movie?

Rod

The extended Hateful 8 is so fucking good

JJB

That’s the way I always read it. Vince is Marsellus’s employee, but they’re also good friends who want to catch up after Vince has been gone for 3 years. So Marsellus has the two of them watch Butch’s place thinking it’ll be the easy job where they just shoot the shit and eat donuts. Nothing’s going to happen - only an idiot would go back to his own apartment after something like this.

Emil Svensson

Regarding the discussion at the top about Pulf Fiction being a problematic fave, the language being iffy etc, etc. My personal take is that if the director is a GD monster, with QT having explicitly and on the record victim blamed with regards to Polanski's child r*pe (do a search for Tarantino Howard Stern Polanski and you'll find some heinous shit), then every film of his could AT BEST be called a problematic fave regardless of content.

Busiris

Not afraid to admit to having that poster up in my home literally right now. Never had it as a teen, I was the loser that waited until I was an adult in my own home!

Busiris

Appreciating all the Jackie Brown love on this ep. I've requested that movie as a WLM every Listener Request Month for a few years now. Someday!! Kill Bill was my first QT movie, so I didn't get into this and his other earlier pictures until around the time that movie came out. The 1994 Siskel and Ebert episode on the special features of the Blu-ray is a fascinating watch if only because they speculate on QT's sudden and quick fame/success around that time, will it last or will it be a flash in the pan that quickly fizzles out? Ebert rightfully suggests that he needs to knock off being in front of the camera and focus on writing/directing.

Mike Olson

One of my most anticipated episodes! More excited to listen to this than QT is to use the N-word

Ryan Horn

Dr. Julius Hibbert from the Simpsons is named after Julia Sweeney whose married name is Julia Hibbert.

Christopher Sailor

RE: Marcellus and the donuts, that’s also why Travolta doesn’t react when he hears someone come in - he assumes it’s Marcellus.

James Richie

Ok this is my tiny little almost „well actually…“ I know the Scorcese doc American Boy about Stephen Prince was unreleased until recently but it was floating around underground since the 70s. In it, Prince tells the story of how he managed his heroin addition and claims that he had all these nursing supplies and an adrenaline shot in case he od‘d. He tells the story of using the shot on someone. It’s almost beat for beat the scene in Pulp Fiction. I don’t know if Tarantino ever credited it but I believe Criterion put it out with Italian American.

Peter Reynoso

I saw it the Saturday of opening weekend at the music box in Chicago with a full crowd. One of my favorite theater experiences.

Robert

On the topic of SLJ, he was in a legit movie in 2024 called the Piano Lesson and it looked for a while that he was going to get a nomination

Dan sulin

Only got through about half this episode before I was like “Fuck it, I’m just gonna watch Pulp Fiction”. Showed it my oldest son who’s been doing a lot of classic moving watching lately and has said he wants to see some QT movies.

Matt

Nothing wrong with that. It's only embarrassing when you're a college kid that thinks liking certain movies is a substitute for a personality

WarOfTheBees

Something I noticed on my rewatch: Mia tells Vincent that Tony Rocky Horror only touched her once: when he shook her hand at her wedding, and when Vincent leaves, he and Mia very pointedly shake hands

WarOfTheBees

Definitely had the classic Uma Thurman on the bed movie poster in my room...

Jonathan Lyons

I love you, mark. I see your comments all the time on here and I always appreciate how your brain works. Your point reminds me of the first day of filming for Django unchained. When QT had to tell Jamie foxx to stop being cool. Django isn't cool, he doesn't have power in those chains. He is broken down. He's a slave. (Apparently will smith was having talks about being Django. But he wanted to change the script to a love story. Imagine telling QT that you have a better idea. Thank god he wasn't neo, either) But performance, violence being action, what is power, who the hell does Kanye think he is- All valid questions lol I could talk about this stuff for hours. I have. And I will again haha

Joe Barrett

My dad let me watch this.... When I was 8 😅. I have to say I had no interest in ever doing ANY drugs after this.

Craig

Saw this in theatres and ever since any time I watch a new QT movie I sit there completely on edge the whole time, waiting for an “I shot Marvin in the face” moment out of nowhere.

Mike Kling

Q did a rewrite on It's Pat the same year where he met Julia Sweeney and Kathy Griffin for this.

Mike Kling

Did The Cohens get the idea for The Dude from Lance?

MarkNM

Hey, thanks! Sometimes I feel like I'm Del Griffith-ing around here. So it's nice to see a compliment.

Gone

Jackson was getting early Oscar buzz for The Piano Lesson a year or two ago, so it could still happen.

Evan S

My thought is that Vincent was in the bathroom at Butch’s apartment because Marcellus left to get coffee. Butch encounters Marcellus only a few blocks away and Marcellus is carrying TWO cups of coffee. What other reason does he have to be in that neighborhood at that exact moment?

Gavin Byrne

I saw this in the cinema and was underage at the time but didn't have to sneak in. I was there to see Beverly Hills Cop 3 and they just gave me a ticket to Pulp Fiction at the box office either by mistake or the ticket sales guy just knew how bad BHC3 was and did me a solid.

James Gibson

Anyone else think Fabian was pregnant? Her feeling him out about if she had a pot belly with no other fat, just a belly. And when she comes out while brushing her teeth, says his name nervously, but when he’s asleep, turns back in. Just something I always wondered.

Ciji McBride

Saw this in theaters in college. I remember HATING Willis' and his baby voiced GF. Now I realize it's because of the icky daddy/daughter dynamic 😬

Josh

I recognize Pulp Fiction is a good movie but I just can't accept the "N word" stuff. Great ep as always

Jack B. Baker

I had an LP sized version of that one. One of the (now sadly gone) record stores in my college town used to have bins full of old posters and promo stuff you could pick through and take for free and that was where I found that. My biggest score was a Los Lobos Colossal Head poster, which I still have rolled up somewhere.

Elliott Tipton

There is a great joke with the Wolf. He offers the boys a ride, but already has Rochelle and a 2 seater car

Zora McBride

YES!! I love this movie--my first QT at 16 or so. I'm about to give it a re-watch with my final glass of water, till more can be procured. Can't wait to hear the madness unfurl--my gf and I have been going through the catalog and just finished Collaterl/History of Violence this afternoon. Hope Vegas was a wonderful time. Can't wit for sgt. Hooker's next appearance!

Corey Reynolds

Native TN here! Almost every QT movie has a reference to TN. The watch in Pulp fiction obviously. Brad’s Pitts character in Inglorious is from east TN. There’s another reference in Jango I think about going to Greenville, TN. If you’ve ever been to Knoxville it’s hard to imagine QT being from there. I think he was more shaped by living in LA

Louis Brooks

Question: The new season of Ted Lasso started. Is that show in the Tarantino universe? There is a scene where Red Apple Cigarettes are purchased. Thought that was an interesting call out.

MANTE IV

You really don’t have to make an anxious case for your unease every time you get near that scene, you know. It’s okay to like a movie. And that cringey Seinfeld promo said Pulp *Friction*. It’s still a splinter in my brain too.

Matthew Lloyd

Or am I getting stuff mixed up with the show 'Spaced' again?

Dave Waters

My father smoked unfiltered Camels for decades. When they weren't available, he would just rip the filters off other brands. We were shocked when he died it wasn't from lung cancer.

Dave Waters

I'm all about the Travolta impressions. I hadn't watched since the initial theatrical release. That whole gimp scene is bananas- especially for such a mainstream, critically acclaimed movie.

Dave Waters

Is it good? It feels so unnecessary after the perfect series finale.

Brendan Flanagan

I was in the fourth grade and my older brother rented it and was watching it with his friends. And when the line “Bring out the gimp” was said he made me leave. And for years I was trying to imagine what happened next. 😂
