On this edition of our Star Trek recap show, The Nexus, we're chatting about a pretty good TNG and a real missed opportunity of a TOSTAS!

First up on TOSTAS, it's an episode with a pretty decent (read: hilarious) premise that totally whiffs on the execution in, "Albatross"! Originally airing September 28, 1974, this episode sees Dr. McCoy arrested, accused of murdering hundreds of people by intentionally spreading a plague and then peace-ing out off-planet. We've got some horrendously drawn aliens that look like deflated Winnie the Pooh, a hilarious moment where Scotty seems almost envious of McCoy's alleged bloodlust, the Enterprise crew tricking some gleep-glop into sneaking aboard the ship by leaving the back door open, Spock getting to do a Captain's Log and much more!

Then, across the Alpha Quadrant on TNG, it's the Wesley-centric episode, "The Game." Premiering back on October 26, 1991, this is the episode where nearly everyone aboard the ship gets addicted to some headset game that hooks players just like heroin. Highlights include Riker endangering the ship once again due to his insatiable sexual appetite, Wil Wheaton giving a solid performance returning as an older Wesley, Ashley Judd guesting as the engineer who falls for Wes while they solve this Invasion of the Body Snatchers-like crisis, Data being aggressively powered down by Dr. Crusher, and more!

For mid to late 90s Nielsen, I remember Wrongfully Accused being better than Dracula Dead and Loving It and Spy Hard but again those are little shitboy opinions. And am I experiencing what the internet calls the Mandela Effect? Because Leslie Nielsen not being in Mafia! is blowing my mind

MarkNM

I'm not the first person to opine that if you turn the color off on Dracula: Dead and Loving It, it kind of gains half a star.

Lol, I hadn't rewatched The Game for a bit, but how Riker didn't get his ass Court Martialed at the end of that is a HONK HONK plothole...

Christine J

I am happy that I am now not the only person to have read “Planet X”.

Paul

Classic TNG episode. Too bad Steve wasn’t able to join the conversation. At least the next two TNG episodes are absolute bangers.

Nicholas Knecht

A sex toy you just watch and that's all, sounds like they rediscovered VR porn. How the hell dont they give these things to the Vulcans, might be useful for pon-far. Side note - Vulcan porn has to be wild...

Boothby shows up later in season 5 of TNG in "The First Duty"

Every month I see the new Nexus and go “oh shit a new month already?” But then I go “helllll yeah let’s gooooo Nexus!!”

Lar

Wait. I swore he was in Mafia too???

Busiris

By pure coincidence, I ran into some info recently that is "Tribune Trivia" esque but I thought it was interesting in the context of this episode and then in a few months when the TOSTAS finale is covered: The Game has a co-writing/story credit for Fred Bronson. It's his 2nd of 2 TNG credits. Before that, his only other Star Trek writing credit was the TOSTAS finale under the psudonym John Culver. Fun facts!

Id love to see a novel or comics series which goes into the development of this game. Perhaps it was the Founders/Dominion? Also imagine Kirk's crew dealing with this game

Jason

I knew Steve’s Pon Farr would go badly. Just knew it.

Billie Jackson

Same. There's also the X-Men+TOS comic miniseries from around the same time, but unlike Planet X I've never read the TOS crossover.

Billie Jackson

There's a holodeck program that is occasionally referenced in Trek named Vulcan Love Slave, but that one is probably other aliens fantasizing about Vulcans rather than by Vulcans for Vulcans.

Billie Jackson

Robin Lefler presents the most disturbing game of all (because it involves Wesley Crusher) "Don't Wake Handy". Leflore does mention her laws occasionally in those books, which also feature Elizabeth Shelby from Best of Both Worlds as the ship's first officer and a talking Mugato crewmember.

Craig

Really?! Just in novels, surely?

Craig

Wesley Crusher getting together with Ashley Judd is the most unrealistic moment for the character- including his transformation into a travelling space Jesus.

What was the Podcast Andrew said he would be on talking among that Star Trek/X-Men book? Also did anyone else find it funny on the anti-drug episodes of TNG we find out O’Brien named his daughter after his favorite party drug? Edit: found it. It’s the Authorized podcast. Looks like 3 hour of goodness. Also I just looked and we are 14 episodes away from the crossover I’ve been waiting for the boys to hit for years. The Lwaxan Troy/Alexander episode!!!

Dan sulin

For all of Picard’s bluster and his “by the book” nature, the guy lets a lot slide. He let his secret kid fly the ship for years. He lets his prototype android install random chips in his head that he got from his evil brother. He has swept multiple HR complaints about folks in engineering using the holodeck to fuck their co-workers and industry peers, including his chief engineer. He lets O’Brien run the transporter drunk. So he just lets Riker be Riker.

Dan sulin

There is also a TNG/X-Men comic that takes place around the same time but neither is connected to the other. Given who owns what now, I doubt we ever see that again. But if those pesky anti-trust laws can get wiggled through we may see Batman on the bridge of an Enterprise soon.

Dan sulin

Yeah. We are in season 5 so we have a lot of good ones coming. Unification is great and the one with Matt Fewer as a time traveler after is fun. After that is an Alexander episode, so it will be fun to hear it mocked

Dan sulin

Posting a lot here today but Boothby shows up later this season when they visit Starfleet academy so Picard can swing his dick around and get his favorite secret son out of another jam.

Matt Nelson

Starfleet salute to Mopbot for his work cleaning up Steve’s mess

NFlux Forever

Considering how irritating she was, I'd say they were perfect for each other.

ShaunTrek

They're Lefler's Laws, not Robin's, so it does have that alliteration you guys wanted.
