Recorded Live at the Hollywood Improv in Los Angeles, CA, 22 February, 2026

“Travolta just chops him in the neck!” - Steve on Bob Gunton’s character’s demise

On this week’s Summer Live episode, we’re releasing our Broken Arrow show from earlier this year, recorded in our favorite room to play on tour, the world-famous Hollywood Improv!

We were there playing to a packed house to chat about this near-forgotten John Travolta/Christian Slater action film that contains more than its fair share of character actors! Is it sad that audiences probably remember this movie better than they remember another, superior, John Woo-in-America entry, Hard Target? How hilarious is the moment when that old timer gets taken out by the terrorists at his camp site? No shade to stuff like Pet Sematary: Bloodlines, but can we get Samantha Mathis in bigger movies like this again? Is there a better actor to play a cinematic weasel than Bob Gunton? And would this film have been better if Christian Slater’s character was in possession of a magic talisman? PLUS: Nickelodeon’s Guts but it’s also a Giallo film!

Broken Arrow stars John Travolta, Christian Slater, Samantha Mathis, Bob Gunton, Frank Whaley, Howie Long, Vondie Curtis-Hall, and Delroy Lindo as Colonel Max Wilkins; directed by John Woo.

First time seeing the gang live and they did not disappoint. Awesome show and definitely will try to catch them live again.

“You’re crazy.” “YEAH! Ainitcool?”

Always liked this one though I also feel like Christian Slater: Action Hero should have been an SNL sketch. Noone believes he's the star, Dana Carvey or Phil Hartman as the bad guy, something for Jon Lovitz to do. The sketch sorta writes itself.

I want you to hold that nuke between yer knees

Its like Cabin ASMR this episode. Literally right in my ear. I can practically smell the piss

Les Whinen

Part of the John Woo Triangle. Broken Arrow - Slater/Travolta, Travolta dies. Face/Off - Travolta/Cage, Cage dies. Windtalkers - Cage/Slater, Slater dies

Dennis Stack

I love the live episode intro version of the theme song. It sounds like a rendition from the Monopoly mobile game 😅

MarkNM

I have a soft spot for Christian Slater for reasons I have previously detailed, but seems like in this era he got a lot of "well, who's left?" roles.

MarkNM

Without this movie, we wouldn't have FIRESTORM. So show the appropriate respect!

"This is Kino fr"—Martin Scorcese

This was one I had VHS. I picked it up with Eraser or some other movie on the sale shelf. I believe I paid $4.99 for it and this was in Oregon too so it was indeed $4.99. I watched it quite a bit. Even at 12 years old, we had a good time with the dummy. I still, now, at 43 years old want to try the road flare duct taped to gas can trick.

Ryan Horn

I thought they made up Father Figures. But nope. WOW!

That’s me at 8 minutes and 25 seconds when Andrew asks if anyone saw it in theatre’s and I mention it’s the 30 anniversary… my dad drug us all to see it because he was a military nut (especially for stealth’s) and than HATED THE MOVIEAnd tried to say mom wanted to see it. My brother and I still tease him about it to this day lol And now I’m immortalized on the show, great hillarious show after seeing them in Oxford and Brooklyn… Happy to have been at the shows they’ve dropped this month. Love you guys 👍🏻👍🏻

Matzar

I always get nervous with audience participation. I know Andrew gets annoyed.

Broken Arrow (for whatever reason) is a WLM. Hard Rain also isn’t bad! (clearly I have a Slate Man fetish)

We Hate Movies

We don't encourage it, but if we ask things aloud, a response can be okay. Stealth Guy was great and a good sport, so this episode is a solid example of times when it works. The person I ragged on at the end of our Total Recall show was someone who had it coming due to being incredibly distracting to all four of us, and the audience around her, for the entire set! - Andrew

Matzar

As a high school teacher, I fully understand.

"I think the Warren Commission said the Devil pushed him that way. 'Cuz he was evil, he was Catholic." God, I love Eric's John Munch-esque obsession with the Kennedy assassination ❤️

Todd B

I'm torn which I loved more - the idea of Manimal Christian Slater or the fact that, in Manimal mode, the Slater impression would sometimes shift from a faux-Nicholson to a Dennis Hopper. (Also the first time I think I really processed the overlap between those two voices)

Tim O'

These guys are so horny for Gremlins this summer, my God

As a Swede, I was genuinely surprised that someone outside of Sweden (and possibly Canada, but maybe they put a lid on it) would know and care about the curling debacle. Also didn't peg Andrew as a curling....enjoyer? Fun fact: New tech will supposedly be used in next year's major championships, able to tell electronically whether a double touch takes place.

KevinSF

Where do you stand on Kuffs?

KevinSF

Man this ep was so damn funny. An all timer.

Billie Jackson

I saw Kuffs in the theater when first released (haven't revisited it) and quite enjoyed it.

Robert Clouse

Travolta episodes are the best because everyone has their own take on the “Travolta Voice”
