On our hot, gloopy, August edition of our cartoon recap show, Animation Damnation, we're exploring two great episodes of the magnificent cartoon, Smiling Friends!

First up, we're talking about the pilot, "Desmond's Big Day Out." Originally airing April 1, 2020, this episode features Pim and Charlie trying to make a troubled guy, Desmond, smile instead of blowing his brains out in front of them. This first adventure into the insane world of the Smiling Friends employees has the guys meeting Pim's hilarious/awful family, taking a trip to Dave Land, and battling these weird, pink, Bliblie creatures at the office!

We're also chatting about the sixth episode of the first season, "Enchanted Forest." This one aired January 9, 2022 and it features Pim and Charlie on a mythical quest through an enchanted forest to help a princess in a castle smile. Along the way, they meet a witch playing a "Pick the Hand" game with them, a Bilbo Baggins-looking guy named Mip, and Charlie winds up having an incredible time doing all sorts of Fantasy Side Quests, much to his surprise!

Devastated when Zach and Michael decided to end this.

Sixblazer

I think, other than the pilot, every episode has a post credits scene calling back to something in the episode. The enchanted forest episode has a scene of Charlie and Pim in the break room the next day and Charlie is all deformed from the potion Mip gave him. Also, fun fact: The guy in the wall in the pilot is Finn Wolfhard from Stranger Things.

James

Great choice this month. It’s too bad the show is ending, but I respect the creators for ending the show before it dipped in quality. Other animated shows could learn lesson from this.

Wesley Hall

Oh my gosh, please PLEASE revisit smiling friends this October or next and do the Halloween episode. That is one of the BEST episodes of television I’ve seen and has the FUNNIEST ending ever done

Alex Rodriguez

When Mr. Boss voice switches randomly to like a southern accent is funny too in some episodes. Definitely need more episodes of this show!

Steve Lyon

In my first time watching the series I didn’t realize that until halfway season 1. Immediately went back and watched the episodes again. Cant get enough of this show and even these 15 second clips are enjoyable.

Wesley Hall

Decided or were basically forced to, it fuckin sucks

Agents Miskatonic

A cool thing to look out for is when they are walking past the living room falling the mom to Desmonds room, there's a hidden demon on the wall. They point it out in the commentary

Rod

Anyone reading should immediately watch Ha Ha, You Clowns

Eren Keskin

It's the ultimate anti-Rick and Morty show. There's an authenticity to the madness

Todd B

"...dude, is that fucking blackface?"

Wesley Hall

“See that’s EXACTLY why I didn’t dress up for Halloween, that’s exactly why right there.”

no-bones billy

By the way just to inform, the guy in the walls is voiced by “stranger things” boy FINN wolfhard

Craig

WHM talking about Mike from RLM? Worlds are colliding!

Erin MacAllister

Add the second Halloween episode to that. The green Halloween witch

Erin MacAllister

The creature Mr.Boss was breastfeeding is his son Jason and he does come back for one other episode as part of the B plot

Tony King

I hadn't seen this before so gave these two episodes a go, and while I thought they were pretty good (the enchanted forest one I particularly liked), it was hearing Andrew and Chris gush about it so much which has really made me want to carry on with it.

Robert Ballard

Bakshi was the 70s LOTR adaptation that covered through Helm's Deep. You're thinking of the two Rankin Bass cartoons (The Hobbit and Return of the King). That's the style they are drawing from in this episode.

Billie Jackson

Still my favorite version of the hobbit. The Return of the King has that goofy Where There's a Whip There's a Way song, but is not as great as The Hobbit. Richard Boone's Smaug > Cumberbatch. Klaus Kinski as Gollum, John Huston, and even a decent performance from Andrew Breitbart's father in law, Orson Bean.

John

i wish they had mentioned it was mike! do they know??

Wesley Hall

Oh! From Red Letter?? I THINK they mentioned it briefly because Eric wasn’t sure who that was lol

Jamie

Great show

Robert Ballard

Brother Theodore is credited as Gollum. He was a weird art guy / performer who did voice for multiple Rankin/Bass productions (you can also hear him in The Last Unicorn). Really liked your emphasis on the voice actors otherwise, though. Some really great work in all the efforts. For example, while Viggo Mortensen was great as the live action depiction of Aragorn, when I read the book I always hear young John Hurt's voice in my head.
