On this special edition of Too Old For This Shit, Andrew and Steve break down the (mostly totally awesome, minus one ep) second season of X-Men '97!

A nine-episode season, eight of them really great, we're getting into it all here, including all the awesome time travel stuff we're doing this season, along with the big, bad, Apocalypse storyline; we've got multiple actors from Star Trek: The Next Generation doing voices here; we've got several mutant teams showcased this season, like X-Factor, X-Force, Weapon X, and Generation X; Polaris and Bishop possibly getting set up to get together romantically; and some truly fantastic (and hopefully final) character deaths! PLUS: We're breaking down the casting notice for the new X-Men MCU movie, and we also set-up a little teaser of our own as we quickly chat about the first episode of Lanterns ahead of our full-season recap coming out this October on Too Old For This Shit!

We hope you enjoy Too Old For This Shit! Thanks so much for being the kick-ass supporters that you all are! Oh damn, I guess I should probably get around to watching season 2!

RJ Cunningham

For the drummer guy in episode 1, when Storm came to save the day, and the theme starts to kick in, they use that guys drumming and incorporate it into the theme before he gets blasted away, it was fucking genius. Also some tremendous animation whenever Psylocke would do her butterfly thing. Also John de Lancie was infinitely, infinitely better than the shitty terrible Kang Disney tried in live-action. The entire vibe of the Majors Kang was painfully dull and unimpressive. And Apocalypse always looked dumb to me, but the voice acting this time around was incredible. Not ADA-compliant but agree with “for lack of spine” being a pretty great villain line But felt the season on a hole was a step down from the first season, and hearing Marvel execs talking 10 seasons for this X-men series and the upcoming dumb new avengers thing, seeing Channing Tatum in that horrible looking avengers trailer, feel like it will be impossible to keep a sustained Xmen97 away from the Disney stink.

WarOfTheBees

I wonder if there was some kind of contract thing after they fired Beau DeMayo where they couldn't change the scripts he wrote or something. The first three episodes felt more like last season, but everything else felt like they had a list of bullet points they were checking off. I still enjoyed it, but it was a definite step down. If season 1 was an A, this season was a B-.

Hooray!! I'm so thrilled you guys did an X-Men '97 recap! "Gambit git tired of da Bible" killed me.

RJ Cunningham

I did love the season a ton overall, tons of great moments. Loved Cable breaking into the X Factor building, always cool when you get reminded how powerful he is. Also found the Nightcrawler ending very touching and well written. The Jubilee episode with the Veruca Salt song was great too. And the Cyclops book club joke reaction absolutely slayed me. Speaking of Inde Navaratte, I wonder if young people associate the Rogue voice to the character like those that grew up on the cartoon did. I would not know

Frank Grimes

Definitely agree it was jarring hearing fuck in Picard and discovery. Then seeing klingon titties in discovery wss weird

Rob Brown

In the finale, there’s a moment where the captions say “(sublime music playing)”, and given that the show is in 1997, I feel like it was a real missed opportunity to not have Sublime music playing.

Rob Brown

It really bothered me that Val Cooper sounded like a 70 year-old woman, like she was a character from the classic series where the original voice actor was still there or something.

Rob Brown

I got to work in a couple episodes of a Garret Dillahunt comedy called “Sprung”. In one scene, he’s fighting off a couple dudes in prison, and I appear to be the only extra there that’s reacting like “Oh, shit, there’s a fight happening. I need to go”. Anyway, he’s a handsome man!

Bryn

I think the best compliment I can give this show is its the only nostalgia reboot that actually feels like a direct continuation of the source .material

Paul

I would love for the gang to cover “Lanterns” on this platform.

Bryce Zubriski

I had no idea this podcast ep was coming. What a nice surprise to wake up to.

Convincing John

A mutant whose power is their mouth is on fire the whole time?! Wow, I have that power, too! It's called acid reflux! (Loving this ep, so glad you guys covered S2.)

Convincing John

Btw, I loved 1992 Morph as a kid, but then as an adult the character is so fuckin' annoying... the way they've improved this character in X-Men 1997 is so, so great. Love X-Men 97 Morph so much.

D Metcalf

Cable was playing house of the dead 2

Frank Grimes

as a casual comic person (most of my exposure was from the 90s cartoons)...i had no idea cable (or gambit) was that strong.

Billie Jackson

Rachel Summers was an alt future "hound" used to hunt other mutants, then was an x-man in the 80s and periodically afterwards. She was in some ways a Jean replacement while Jean was dead. Has been in a relationship with original Psylocke Betsy Braddock who is Captain Britain in recent years after Kwannon finally got her own body back. Rachel was a Phoenix host and spent a lot of time with Excalibur when Nightcrawler, Kitty and she believed the other X-Men were dead instead of just in Australia.

Billie Jackson

Lila Cheney and the Long Beach All Stars!

Jay Smith

I'm just now listening to the episode. Steve, you are speaking to me. I'm the Maggott fan, lol. I thought he got killed last season during the sentinel attack but nope, they saved him to torture him in season 2. He's one of the few Black mutants in the X community and as a Black person myself, I will talk him over Frenzy or Prodigy any day of the week.

Billie Jackson

Apocalypse Gambit is good timing considering Gambit has turned into a monstrous version again in the comics rn. And the Uncanny team being based in Louisiana has meant his prior connections sometimes pop up.

Matt

actual lol here

Rob Brown

I know of someone that used to go to my local comic shop that had commissioned Michael Turner (Witchblade) to do a Maggot sketch for them. That has to be the rarest of rare pieces.

Matthew Lloyd

Loved the scene in Lanterns when the aliens lack of racism toward Barack Obama was what gave him away lol, reminded me of the Key and Peele sketch.

Matthew Lloyd

[Nerd hat on] well actually Chambers body is nothing but a housing for the psychic furnace that is his consciousness, he basically just uses it for blast weapons. During M day he lost his powers and had to be on life support until Ozymadius infused him a massive quantity of Apocalypses blood and completely healed him and made him look like a teen apocalypse.

Matthew Lloyd

When he has access to his full potential and calls himself "New Sun" he has absolute mastery over kinetic energy—allowing him to travel between dimensions, fly, convert matter into pure energy at a sub-molecular level, and detonate or stop objects of any scale with a thought.

Matthew Lloyd

I know its a stupid petpeeve but during the Apocalypse episode when he "ascends" i kept thinking "thats not how he gets his armour, the celestial ship makes him extremely powerful, but its not until Cable travelling to the past accidentally infecting Apocalypse with his techno organic virus does he get the armour, be able to form his body into machines and communicate with Ship".
