“I love this sad sack shit” - Eric on the father in this movie

On the first We ❤️ Movies episode of season 17, we’re chatting about a total all-timer cult classic, Adam Wingard’s The Guest!

Is this the single best Dan Stevens performance we’ve seen so far? How incredible is this soundtrack and score combo? Is this family too into Halloween? Is Leland Orser’s character the biggest “loser dad” guy in a while? Was there ever a man cooler than Lance Reddick—especially when he was wearing boss-ass dusters like the one he sports in this film? And who hasn’t known a townie scum bag like old Craig here? PLUS: That poor, elderly couple just wanted to celebrate their wedding anniversary at that quiet diner!

The Guest stars Dan Stevens, Maika Monroe, Brendan Meyer, Sheila Kelley, Leland Order, Chase Williamson, Joel David Moore, Ethan Emery, Tabatha Shaun, AJ Bowen, and the late, great Lance Reddick as Major Carver; directed by Adam Wingard.

The Hand That Rocks the Cradle is "Nanny from hell" & Pacific Heights "tenant from hell" this is the "Thank You For Your Service from hell" movie

Rob Brown

Legion! He was in the X-Men-adjacent show, Legion, on FX! I’m about 15 minutes in, so maybe it gets mentioned later on, but when you guys were talking about stuff that Dan Stevens was in, you kept dancing around it. That was a good showcase for him.

We Hate Movies

We don't mention it. But I think a few of us have seen it and liked it. Steve and Chris maybe? - Andrew

Rob Brown

I think I only ever saw the first season, and it became one of a million shows during the pandemic where I was like “Now that I have all this time, I’m going to get caught up on EVERYTHING!” that I didn’t touch.

JK

Another great, lesser-seen Wingard is A Horrible Way to Die

Conrad Silas

"This is what gave him a career." This is what should have given him Bond.

Scrimmy Scrim

I think I have watched this movie as many times as Steve has and I'm still not sick of it. Definitely a favorite.

Busiris

I'm in the same boat as Cabin, I saw this in theaters and I feel lucky that I did because apparently it had a super small theatrical release of like 200 or so theaters and somehow my local AMC was one of them. I saw You're Next in theaters a few years before and was instantly a fan. Also huge lol at Eric talking about the blu-ray trailers which I was also talking over them with my partner last night because I have the exact same blu-ray.

Tristan Clark

I've seen Scorpion Kings you people wouldn't believe. Blu Ray trailers exploding off the screen. All these direct to video sequels will be lost in time like movies written off for a tax break. Time to die.

Jack

most of the Carpenter style synth music is S U R V I V E who also did Stranger Things

Smaug

I just watched this in prep for Onslaught. What a delight! The synthwave score rules. Awesome to see the haunted house in Moriarty that I go to every year in the finale scenes! No one in Moriarty is anywhere near as hot as the actors in this movie. I'm excited for Onslaught and muh man Makeup and Vanity Set's soundtrack

Smaug

Check out Makeup and Vanity Set who did the Onslaught soundtrack. I haven't seen the movie yet, but MAVS is my fave and he does awesome soundtracks

poopstink

This movie was my 1st screening at the now-evicted Grand Illusion Cinema in Seattle! Gorgeous little theater with one old screen, saw it in 70MM and was laughing my ass off the whole time. Great pick, guys!

Emil Svensson

I was half expecting Eric to chime in when Andrew said that "it's like a two-hander" in reference to Dan Stevens in I'm Your Man.

Billie Jackson

The Guest taking a hard turn into becoming Teorema would really be something.

Billie Jackson

Ethan Embry, the costar of Ed O'Neill's Dragnet TV series?

Chris Christodoulou

Ok, this is totally random but it's (at least) the second time I hear the guys sh!t on Neeson's "A Walk Among the Tombstones" and it is kinda surprising. It's a legit great movie that got buried under Neeson's action hero run. If you haven't seen it, it's a neo-noir based on the book with the same title by Lawrence Block (he has a long series with detective Scudder). I really think that if the guys gave an honest shot they would love it.

Queen Taru

I always recommend this for Halloween season viewing. I love this movie.

Rob Brown

When Embry says he was Navy, which is his only character trait for the 12 seconds he’s in the movie, I immediately had to check and see if this was a possible “That Thing You Do” reference, but alas, it was the MARINES that he ran off to join when he bailed on the Wonders before their big TV appearance.

We Hate Movies

Totally missed this one, wowza! Thanks for the rec! - Andrew

We Hate Movies

Always important to remember not to lump us all together as if we have the same movie opinions. I rated this 3 starts on Letterboxd and liked it fine enough. My biggest issue with it was him being sidled with the kid the whole time, but yeah, Neeson's done way worse. - Andrew

poopstink

Oh yes indeed! Last film I saw there before they left was Mask of the Phantasm, also in 70MM. Great memories!

We Hate Movies

Would be hilarious if his That Thing You Do character just became a townie who sells guns to dudes in quarries. - Andrew

Rob Brown

I just got out of Onslaught, and this isn’t really a spoiler if you’ve read the one-sentence plot synopsis that’s posted everywhere, but knowing what Wingard did with Blair Witch, and it not even being revealed that it WAS a Blair Witch movie until right before it came out, I would not have been surprised at all if the movie ended with “ :Universal Soldier” being slapped on the title card, as not only are there obvious plot similarities, but the most recent installment in that series, “Day of Reckoning”, was very much action-horror itself. That said, the movie felt very much like a 2010s-current day Garth Ennis comic mini series brought to life.

Chris Christodoulou

Fair! Apologies for that, was not intentional, just wanted to give a shout-out to the movie :) And btw, a damned good episode this was 🎃

LoganTheWise

Not to be one of "those guys" but I'm surprised neither Andrew or Steve noticed as the Army base employee who gets the call from Anna , was the actress who played Iris West on the CW Flash show.

LoganTheWise

Finally got me to pull the trigger on this one and HOT DAMN what a banger. And such a well observed 20 year old scumbag Halloween party

JK

Oh ya tough watch but it's a good one

Mike Kling

Joel David Moore would be an excellent Freddy Krueger

Robert

This would be a cool double feature paired with Deathdream

KC Masterpiece

Wait, did they just say that they’re revisiting one of my favorite episodes, Halloween III???

Elliott Tipton

Interesting they are a shared universe...pumpkins in Onslaught....do they all take place in the same moment? You're next is America's Thanksgiving if is remember....The Guest is Halloween and so is Onslaught?

Adam Gaudry

I watched this after listening to the guys talking about it and it was fantastic. Thanks for the recommendation.

David

Dan Stevens was in the mix awhile back as a potential James Bond which, imo, would have been a match made in heaven.

Bible Black

For your 2 movie letterboxd lists Andrew. Mandy and Suspiria(2018). Movies where a dude gets his dick laughed at.

Rose Esposito

I will slightly defend Blair Witch (2016) -- it's certainly not great and doesn't need to exist, but I loved the time loop/paradox element and wish it had done a lot more with that.

Peter Reynoso

Great episode. Can we please get taxi driver on this feed?

Billie Jackson

Haven't seen the movie, but it's a solid entry in Lawrence Block's generally good Matthew Scudder book series. The only other film adaptation of one that I can think of is Eight Million Ways to die which was bizarrely reworked to be set in LA when the Scudder series is very much a NYC based one.

Chris Christodoulou

You should give it a shot, I wish it was more of a hit and they made more. And 8 Million Ways to Die would make a very fine entry in the WHM compendium. Next listener's request maybe...?
