“I always wanted to see a cop car crash because of this movie!” - Eric on Midnight Run

On this very special episode of WHM, which also happens to be the Season 17 premiere(!), we’re so stoked to be chatting with John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, the writing/directing duo behind hilarious films like Game Night and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, about their new action-packed buddy comedy, Mayday, while also breaking down one of their, and our, favorite buddy action/comedies, the great Midnight Run!

How much of a fantastic casting decision was it pairing Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin? Has anyone actually been on a plane with a spiral staircase? Was there anyone better than Dennis Farina? How great is all the location shooting here? And good lord, look at all the places De Niro is finding to smoke in this movie! PLUS: Check out John & Jonathan’s hilarious new action comedy, Mayday, available on Apple this Friday, September 4th!

Midnight Run stars Robert De Niro, Charles Grodin, John Ashton, Dennis Farina, Joe Pantoliano, Richard Foronjy, Robert Miranda, Jack Kehoe, Wendy Phillips, Philip Baker Hall, and the late, great, Yaphet Kotto as Agent Mosely; directed by Martin Brest.

Ed Harris

A KTLA staple for me. Top five Robert De Niro movies for me. Damn near perfect.

Charles Grodin's Toupee is Scared Stupid

Midnight Run is top tier Grodin, glad to know the Game Night boys have good taste. For more unofficial Midnight Run sequels, Christopher McDonald played Jack Walsh in a trilogy of tv movies in 1994.

David

God damn I love Midnight Run. Tip of the hat to the all-time supporting cast as well - Farina. Ashton. Joey Pants. Now we're talking....

Bryn

Even though I love Game Night, I figured I wasn't ever going to see Mayday because I've always viewed what goes on over on Apple as none of my business, I got enough subscriptions as it is. But this episode has absolutely made me finally take out a sub, even if its just a month, to specifically watch Mayday. Everyone sold the hell out of it. I can't wait to see it now.

Jan

Dont know why this movie is fun & stuff, but it is. It holds up boff And i LOVE game night. Would love a sequel but it gets better with every rewatch. Weird glass tables

Donovan Stole

So... I'm glad I listened to the very end because, if I'm not mistaken, Eric says his birthday is May 1st. Literally May Day. Which also so happens to be my sober birthday. Just passed 10 years. 🥳🎶💌

WarOfTheBees

Justice for the Dungeons and Dragons movie!

Jaime Lee Ezell

Watch Widow’s Bay while you have Apple!! Best show I’ve seen in years!

Bryn

Yeah, everyone raves about it. I'll try and cram it in.

Barista Bran

Where I grew up they shot Witless Protection in the next town over and everyone would talk about it all the time. Happened again when they shot Man of Steel in that town too.

Sarah Montgomery

Seems an oddly short episode, especially for having guests. I'm guessing there's only so many ways to say: "This movie just works".

Gone

I wanted to like this movie more than I did. I think I just don’t like Charles Groden.

We Hate Movies

It’s slightly shorter because not all guests have 2+ hours to blow talking to us, unfortunately. - Andrew

James

Very underrated score by Danny Elfman. It perfectly fits this movie.

Smaug

I just watched the D&D movie yesterday when I took a sick day, love it! I was interested in this Mayday movie, but I'm bummed to see it's on Apple, no interest there. It seems like we're now at a place where we're just replacing overpriced cable packages of days goneby with a shitload of different streaming platform subs. No thanks.

Rose Esposito

Is it bad that I mix up Charles Grodin and Charles Rocket?

Busiris

Covering this movie might be what finally gets me to commit to renting those Midnight Run sequels starring Christopher McDonald. I've seen them available in my area but I keep putting it off. I really need to check them out.

Smaug

I've only ever seen Another Midnight Run and it was enough to convince me not to watch the others. It's pretty rough. It's got a TV budget so there are no action scenes to speak of and the writers made Shooter McGavin (Jack) into kind of a buffoonish idiot instead of DeNiro's world-weary bounty hunter.

KRA

I really enjoyed this episode! It's fun to hear what jumps out to and sticks with people and later informs their own art. That's the good shit. I enjoyed the Witless Protection connection as well. You guys do so much for us and will never be free of the horrors 🥲

Winson Paine

I have arrived to my own surprise to defend Amtrak from Lance Sweets as seen on Bones. I take the Southwest Chief (the Chicago-LA run) and it's pretty good. The private cabins are cozy but fine, the food is totally acceptable (think like decent diner grade) and and watching the scenery roll by is gorgeous. Huge rec if you have the time and just want to vanish for a few days. You need to swap in Chicago because the trains have to be smaller because US rail infrastructure sucks, alas.

Winson Paine

Also if you are looking for smoking on Apple TV check out For All Mankind where everyone is smoking constantly all the time. I am surprised the astronauts are not smoking in capsule

Busiris

Yeah, I really had a strong feeling that this was the case, which I think added to my hesitation in even bothering to check them out. But curiosity might get the better of me someday...

JK

I had totally forgotten about some classic "Fat Guy John Candy Music" over the closing credits here

Geoff Gershon

Really fun review guys! Midnight Run is one of my all-time favorites and crazily, you actually have me now WANTING to see the latest Ryan Reynolds movie. 😆

Busiris

This is the rare moment where you/your username and the podcast are in perfect harmony and I'm loving it.

Tim O'

I loved the D&D movie, and in a just universe, they'd be working on the second or third sequel at this very moment.

Matthew Lloyd

I think Matthew Vaughn said that Midnight run is what inspired him when filming Stardust.

Craig

No questions about their upcoming Star Trek movie?

MarkNM

So Mayday is sort of "Hudson on the Moscow," eh?

Billie Jackson

I always thought of him as Bruce Willis's younger brother due to Moonlighting. As opposed to Jerry Doyle, who was the failed clone of Bruce. Rocket was the replacement Chevy Chase on SNL, and without knowing much about him aside from the SNL incident and his sad demise, he's almost certainly a far better person than Chase. Wasn't Charles Grodin the Andy Rooney equivalent for 60 Minutes 2 for at least a few years?

Billie Jackson

If nothing else they have to be better than the Remo Williams sequel TV movie/failed pilot.

Billie Jackson

Larry/Dan Whitney lives here in Nebraska and occasionally campaigns in character for statewide Republican candidates. It's frightening to me that a Larry endorsement could be the decisive factor for anyone. Not strictly speaking germane to anything, just felt timely in these months.

TheBestMike

Curious to see what the fellas think of MayDay. I feel as if most of the WHM team really can't stand Ryan Reynolds anymore.

Tim O'

The people demand more JARNATHAN!

WarOfTheBees

In a pure world we would have had the 9 episode Jarnathan Paramount Plus miniseries

Matthew Lloyd

Who do you think ate who's lunch, Charles Grodin or Phil Hartman?

Rose Esposito

To be fair, most people are far better people than Chevy Chase.

Busiris

Oh God, I can't even imagine what that looks like! 😴

We Hate Movies

The embargo lifted the other day so I'll have to update my Letterboxd, but I legit liked it and had a ball watching it. I'm not a 100% Reynolds hater and honestly, he's dialed back here. He's still got the one-liners and sarcastic comments here and there, but it's not at the Deadpool level by any means. And if anything, it helps that his character is the one that needs guidance and hand-holding through a lot of the film. Since he's the fish out of water, doesn't speak the language, doesn't know where to go, his character has to rely totally on Branagh's to get him through their ordeal together so honestly, he takes a backseat to Branagh in a way. So it's a recommend from me! - Andrew

We Hate Movies

That's an interesting Q, but I would kinda say neither? Hartman perhaps got roles that Grodin may have been considered for, but I don't think Hartman could do the persona that Grodin had, and I don't think Grodin could do a lot of the more outrageous show-y performances that Hartman could. Similar-ish guys who probably wore the same sweater a lot, but I think they more or less swam in different pools. - Andrew

We Hate Movies

We wanted to keep it to Mayday, which they were here to promote, but also just to be able to reference stuff they've already made. If it was a more all-around grab-bag convo maybe we would've brought it up, but it wasn't really the place. That said, we of course asked off-air and they said the latest is that they're close to finishing the first draft of the script. So, a long ways before we see their vision on-screen. But you bet I'll be there! - Andrew

Matthew Lloyd

Yeah I think you're right, they could play dads, but different kind of dads. Hartman couldn't do Beethoven while Grodin couldnt do Jingle all the way. Both could do small soldiers lol.

Frank Grimes

I like that you call her “kitten.” I call my Midge Catt “kitten” all the time

Sam Dosick

Love love love the podcast but did not like the format of you guys bringing on someone to talk about their upcoming movie. Felt like Mayday was something that would normally be on WHM and this just felt like a plug where you can only say nice things :(

Holt Rowley

I’m just curious to know what they’re real opinions are lol cause they’re not gonna tell these guys that they didn’t like their movie I guess to me Mayday just felt like a movie as I was watching it that they might think it’s entertaining, but not that great or at least a certain person I will not name on this podcast lol seems to always not like these kind of movies so I guess I’m more curious if they really actually liked Mayday or they’re just saying it because of who they’re interviewing. Cause I personally liked the movie. I thought it was fun. I’m a big Ryan Reynolds fan. He’s just playing Deadpool again essentially but I do like the pairing they have and everything they can say in this podcast.

Craig

Thanks for the behind-the-curtain update!

TheBestMike

Side note, WHM review of Mayday is PERFECT! Netflix recently recommended another kinda buddy film, "Safe House". What an incredible film for my hero Denzel and RyRy before he was RyanPool. Might be worth an episode one day.
