“It smells like cat piss everywhere in that thing!” - Chris on the furniture store

For our third commentary track of 2026, we’re talking over the psychological sci-fi/horror sensation, Backrooms!

How incredible is the set design for this film? Would you buy furniture from Cap’n Clark’s Ottoman Empire? Did anyone else around our age or older get some really intense sense memory vibes thanks to this movie’s period accuracy? How mad do you have to be at a furniture store to spray paint ‘RIP OFF’ on its front window? And following a patient into the basement of his business is not necessarily the mark of a qualified therapist, just FYI. PLUS: Much praise for local upstate New York hot dog restaurant chain, Hot Dog Charlie’s!

Backrooms stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, Finn Bennett, Lukita Maxwell, Avan Jogia, Robert Bobroczkyi, and Mark Duplass as Phil; directed by Kane Parsons.

If you want to watch along with us, we are starting the film at the time code 00:00:05, so five seconds into the picture. You should just see the yellow A24 Logo starting to form on your screen. If you’re in a rush and want to skip our intro, the commentary portion of this track starts at the 00:06:38 mark on the timecode.

Thanks for being the kick-ass Patreon supporter that you are! We know you have a lot of options when you're watching stuff, and we're stoked you decided to sync up with us for this movie!Cover art by Felipe Sobreiro.

Andrew not seeing MGD that much is crazy, it’s everywhere in Illinois

JK

We need more Renata Reinsve movie commentaries because "lady Christopher Lambert voice" was absolutely killing me

Jason

If they made this one of their legendary power hours, this could've been titled "We Hate Moves: A Backshots-a-mentary."

Smaug

Whaaaa, Obsession v Backrooms? Backrooms has so much more to say that's relevant to our times about burying emotions, refusing to acknowledge trauma, mental health and the value of exploring the subconscious, etc. Obsession's message was "don't be a dumb asshole who's never seen a movie or read a book about genies or making a deal with the devil before you make a poorly-worded wish." It just had a good performance from a woman who sold her role well and made interesting faces. These 2 movies aren't even in the same class.

Paul

‘The Worst Person in the World’ gets lost in ‘The Backrooms.’

Paul

This one’s still fresh in my mind, so I don’t need to have the movie to follow along. 😁

Daniel Hood

"You could do what the Turks couldn't do, save the Ottoman Empire" Goddamnit Eric that made me spit over my monitor, well done.

Dash Coom

somebody please do the mockup cd or dvd cover for "'Upside-down Toilet' Eric Szyszka: Live in Melbourne"

Unicorn Trista

I haven't listened yet so I don't know if it comes up yet; however; Eric taught me how to say Chiwetel Ejiofor's name on the 2012 episode. Thank you, Eric

Paul

What’s MGD?

Jacob Hunt

Miller Genuine Draft

JK

MGD still lives strong in Canada, as do all terrible beers

Jacob Hunt

I wonder what New Yorkers are drinking or for Steve New Jersey or Cabin Connecticut

Craig

I’m not a horror fan at all but have to say I’m intrigued by this film. Been a long time since something that looked really original came out. It drops on HBO Max next week so will await listening until then.

RJ Cunningham

For the life of me I can’t picture what Steve’s dad looks like. You’ve got Zelda maps, but he was also X-treme in his sports. Taught Steve to always make great time on the road, cold road soda in hand to help deal with “stupid women” slowing him down . But also, again, Zelda maps. Actually just picturing Steve with a parachute on

Eren Keskin

This concept always felt more cozy than scary to me, but if it gets young people excited about movies, so be it.

RJ Cunningham

I straight up can never tell if comments actually show up

Busiris

The "Lady Christopher Lambert" comment really got me, lmao. A definite top quality commentary. I honestly never would've guessed this one would get the commentary treatment. Might be the newest or at least fastest from new release to becoming a WHM commentary ever?

Billie Jackson

I remember it not being good, but far preferable to Miller High Life.

Billie Jackson

I'm picturing the guy who ran the mall in Phantom of the Mall: Eric's Revenge, only partially because I picture most people as Jerry Orbach lookalikes.

Billie Jackson

I keep wondering what an Obsession sequel would be like if the premise was the mc wishing to be whatever the other person wanted rather than asking for some twisted alteration of them. Body horror, possible identity loss, surprise rom com after the mc is essentially replaced forever by someone better? Idk. Seems like it could veer into Cronenberg territory in an interesting way.

We Hate Movies

We have plenty of Miller but I personally haven't seen Miller Genuine Draft in like 15 years. - Eric

Jacob Hunt

If I had to assume, Eric you’re definitely an old style or Yuengling or Banquet kinda guy, Andrew PBR, Cabin Coors light and Steve gives me IPA vibes not in a bad way though.

Smaug

That sounds way more interesting to me, personally. I think that you could also get into questions that a lot of young people struggle with like who am I to my friends, who do I show the world, etc, etc.

Wil Brown

MGD is still available in Mongolia!

Rob Brown

I’m late to the game, having only just watched Backrooms the other night when it dropped on HBO Max. Anyway, Arli$$ was trash, but damn it if it didn’t get me crushing on Sandra Oh.

John Edwards

Excellent commentary, as always. Horror's always one of my favorite media genres because of how comparatively frequent it is to see hobbyist productions hitting it big. Kane going from making realistic-looking short films with free 3D software in his bedroom to directing this is the kind of rags-to-riches story that I think all creatives, especially young creatives, yearn to hear.

Zora McBride

Love yous guys to death, and the commentaries are probly my favorite formt to consume WHM. my gf and I just gave this a watch and quite enjoyed it. Can't wait to see you have some fun with it! Stay safe out there and don't forget to wear the blue!

Les Whinen

How did you miss the one perfect use for thr Backrooms....a massive marijuana grow op.

Alastair Watt

Whatever happened to the sithmentary?
