“Unfortunately, they forgot to make this a movie…” - Eric

On this week’s show, we’re chatting about the total misfire that is Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li!

Holy smokes, what were they thinking here? What in the world with this narration? Why was the late, great Michael Clarke Duncan the only actor who understood the assignment here? Was the Chris Klein performance one of the inspirations for Tim Heidecker’s classic ‘Decker’ character? And why the heck did they make M. Bison an Irish guy? PLUS: Do you have to take Pokémons to the vet?

Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li stars Kristin Kreuk, Chris Klein, Robin Shou, Moon Bloodgood, Josie Ho, Taboo, Michael Clarke Duncan, and Neal McDonough as Mike Bison; directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak.

This guy walks through the rain drops…

Joel Myers

I love when y’all cover films from the 2000’s, they’re so funny to hear you guys riff on

Aaron

I saw this in a theater, got bored, walked into John Cena in 12 Rounds got a headache and went back to this instead.

Shawn

Check out some reviews for Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons. it came out a few years ago and is a pretty fun beat em up, though it's not a standard level 1-10 sort of game. You can get the Switch version for less than $10 when on sale.

Nash out

Jason

Man, with Steve’s continued asides, a Too Old episode on Lanterns will be tremendous.

Rob Brown

44:00 Despite there being approximately 4000 episodes, I think I’ve somehow managed to see maybe the same four episodes of Chicago PD over and over.

Matt

Chris Klein. Truly TRULY one of the worst to ever do it

Rob Brown

This is a first ballot shitty photoshop Hall of Famer, right?

johnny stocker

He was acceptable playing a exactly a big grinning doofus pretty boy. So American Pie and Election, that was about it.

johnny stocker

I spent the last 45 minutes of this trying to decide if actual Keanu instead of the faux Keanu thing that Klein seemed to be going for here would've saved this thing. I decided it would still be a nah, but they would've been closer to having something.

D Arthur

He’d do so well in verticals. He was before his medium. 😢

Daimon

In the book Lights, Camera, Game Over! How video game movies get made (great resource for video game adaptations from 1993-2017), writer Justin Marks (who bizarrely would write Top Gun Maverick) said with Legend of Chun-Lin they were doing it right and literally compares its Batman Begins tone to the JCVD being Batman & Robin further validation on this being a low grade Batman Begins wannabe without the understanding for what it worked

Rose Esposito

I can't recall the episode, but remember "Dermot or Dylan" in the VHSTG? That is Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat for me. I'll NEVER get it right, and this movie did not help. (Do both franchises have a dude with many arms??)

Matthew Lloyd

Some Lanterns hate in this episode lol. Well I'm enjoying it.

Mr. Nobody

Sorry steve lanterns is peak

Matthew Lloyd

I kind of enjoyed that second mortal kombat film.

Billie Jackson

Least competent actor from Omaha. Brando, Monty Clift, Nick Nolte, the Fondas, John Beasley, Jorge Garcia, Fred Astair, Zahn McClarnon, Terry Kiser, Gabrielle Union, Holt Macallan, Swoosie Kurtz, Anne Ramsey, Dorothy McGuire and all other actors from here shine more brightly in contrast with him. He is to acting as fellow former Omahan Jojo Siwa is to dancing.

Billie Jackson

One series needed a Dylan McDermott playable character who had a special move that involved crying while thinking of his maid AHS season one style. I'd never get the two confused again. In a bad way, but still.

Billie Jackson

Bad Dudes game nixed because no one would want to rescue the kidnapped head of state.

Billie Jackson

Movie theater shits sounds like it either should be a mailbag topic. 4dx horse racing scat makes me wonder if y'all would ever consider doing Dreamscape. Lot to work with in that movie.

Kevin Lynch

Who would Gerrit Graham (RIP) play in Brian De Palma’s Street Fighter?

RJ Cunningham

Maybe the video game to movie pipeline is so terrible due to this Justin Marks fella

MarkNM

Chris Klein is the Backrooms version of Keanu Reeves. Perhaps he's edible.

Dan sulin

I get what Steve has an issue with. As a fan of the comic character the shows is very different. But the show is doing some really interesting stuff I am really enjoying it. It’s just not a great “Green Lantern” story, in the traditional sense

Dan sulin

There is a video game YouTuber that hits my feed sometimes who is having a meltdown about the new Street Fighter movie and how “silly” it looks. I had to yell in his comments “This kinda shit is how we get the Legend of Chun Li, no one wants that!!” Say what you will about the first movie, at least it was silly to and fun to watch.

MarkNM

Angel Studios would.

Frank Grimes

Can't wait for the frighteners. There's a BTS segment with Michael J Fox calling our doc doc in a scene cause BTTF is ao ingrained in him

Matthew Lloyd

Yeah i totally get that and the ring being constantly out of charge does annoy me because well im old school with the whole it has 24 hour charge but in that 24 hours there's no limit to what you can dom

MarkNM

"We Hate Movies, brought to you by the Applebee's App."

Em Smith

"You can't fight the future" "I think the future fought him, dude"

Mark D Myers

I would recommend double Dragon revive.

John Edwards

The original Street Fighter 1 arcade cabinet's worth a lookup if you've never seen it. The punch/kick buttons were these big pneumatic carnival game-looking things that made your attacks do more damage the harder you hit them, which, as Capcom quickly discovered, wasn't good for the cabinet's longevity.

Rose Esposito

PLEASE NO MORE MAILBAGS ABOUT SHIT

Todd B

I loved the idea of DePalma Street Fighter, but let's be serious - the movie from his filmography that would/should be the touchstone there is Phantom of the Paradise. To which I will now say - Gerrit Graham as Dan Hibiki.

Sam

Irish Bison is such a trip.

johnny stocker

Cabin's murmuring of 'Oh God in heaven' while discussing the White Rose about 20 minutes from the end was the perfect encapsulation of this one, and I laughed pretty hard 😅

Jonathan Lyons

"I'm completely sober" -andrew jupin, discussing the black IPs I was gonna say this show has changed and andrews changed, man. You've changed, maaaan. But I am also sober lol How much money would it cost to get you guys to drop acid and do a Mandy commentary? Asking for a friend

Matt

Needs more barley wine slander. Awful stuff, and I thrived and survived the IPA HOPS-pocalypse of the early 2010's.

Daniel Garcia

That's definitely a budget thing, and trying to have a work around a deus ex machina that fits on a finger, while also doing a decent impression of "True Detective" but sometimes explosions. Season is fine, but definitely has the bait of teasing out another season's worth of stuff.

MarkNM

"You fought in the Hop Wars?"

Matt

Yes, I was once an IBU Knight the same as your father

nadia

I hit up friend of the show Cameron Ripley to watch this movie for this episode and the movie had the commentary track with two of the producers, Chris Klein, and Neal McDonough. Made it only slightly more watchable but man you can tell they just cast Moon Bloodgood because they all thought she was hot. 😭

Tim O'

He would portray the car that gets beaten up

Adam Ray

I literally turned off the movie as soon as I heard that accent out of Neal. I turned into TLJ and I was not going to put up with that tom foolery.

Daimon

If anything it’s Uwe Boll’s fault and Paul WS Anderson since they set the bar so low for years

Daimon

That’s among the other reasons this only made $12.8 million dollars against a $50 million dollar budget
