On this edition of our Star Trek recap show, The Nexus, we're chatting about a ridiculous episode of TOSTAS and a Matt Frewer-guesting TNG!

First up on TOSTAS, it's the penultimate episode of the series, "How Sharper Than a Serpent's Tooth"! Originally airing October 5, 1974, this episode has the Enterprise crew encountering the great space bird being, Kukulkan! And thank goodness that Lieutenant Walkingbear was working this particular shift! Did this ancient alien also inspire Chinese dragon myths? That's what Kirk says, anyway! And how hilarious is that one DeForest Kelley line that sounds like he's recording from a pay phone?

Then, across the Alpha Quadrant on TNG, it's the super-fun episode, "A Matter of Time." Premiering back on November 16, 1991, this is the episode guest-starring the great character actor, Matt Frewer! Frewer plays a historian who comes back in time from the 26th century to observe the Enterprise crew on a particular mission. He's running around bothering everybody with this questionnaire, while also lifting various gadgets from the crew. We've got some great Data insanity regarding how he listens to music, Worf being second-guessed by Picard before the cold open is even over, and Beverly getting the hots for our time traveling guest star!

Instead of a Power Hour for the last episode of Tostas, the guys should just order Mexican food and gorge themselves on Tostadas.

Maya is the adjective for the people and the culture and so on, strictly speaking Mayan is just the language. It is pretty common to use Mayan as the adjective, I think because English throws an n on that form for a lot of place/cultures (Mexican, American, Canadian, etc.), but technically it is incorrect, the worst kind of correct.

I thought the same thing

Dying laughing about the overnight oats complaints. My wife and kids love them but I think they are gross

Hey Matt Frewer, I got an idea for an invention you could bring back...THAT FUCKING TIME MACHINE.

Walking Bear never appears again, but the tos movies era DC comics had William Bearclaw, who was the most prominent Native American crew member of a Starfleet ship that has its own series until Chakotay. Unfortunately the bewildering decision was made for Bearclaw to be a huge xenophobe, and kind of a jerk. Berlinghoff Rasmussen reappears in the p good Indistinguishable from Magic, in which LaForge leaves the Enterprise E post Nemesis and gets a Galaxy class ship to captain. Scotty is heavily involved and it's p engineering focused. Was supposed to be an enduring status quo change for Geordi, but ultimately the decision at editorial was made to return him to his job as Picard's chief of engineering, in the same way O'Brien eventually ends up back on DS9 with Nog as their engineering heads. Can't all be Bashir being thrown out of Starfleet or transporter dupe Riker getting roped into working for Starfleet intelligence (or Ezri getting her own ship) ig.

Oh! Rasmussen appears in a few issues of Star Trek Defiant, the spinoff of Sisko's post wormhole ST comic. Defiant is crewed by Worf, Spock, Ro and... Lore? While the Sisko comic was Crusher, Data and a similarly odd blend of TNG, DS9 and VOY characters. Iirc both titles were decent. Not sure about the new post Picard Season three title featuring Captain Seven, or the centuries later The Last Starship starring a resurrected Kirk.

This is the first I've heard of them, and they seem totally unappealing. I'll just wake up a few minutes earlier and make some fresh, hot oatmeal!

Sealbro

Have they announced what they're doing after the animated series yet? DS9?

My coworker listens to podcasts on 3x speed and it's just gibberish. He also pops nicotine tablets all day, everyday

So, the puzzle game discussion unlocked an odd memory for me. So, back in the day one of the computer games did put more time into than I probably should have was Star Trek: 25th Anniversary. It was basically a mix of starship combat and away missions that were point and click puzzle jobs. Actually pretty fun from what I recall. Anyway, they had a mission there which makes me think the people making the game were aware of TOSTAS, because they have one where you have to deal with an alien who tells everyone he came to Earth as the Aztec god Quetzecoatl. And even more 'this is just TOSTAS', the second half of that one has ol Quetz being put on trial by the Klingons and Kirk and crew coming to his aid. Now kind of tempted to see how that thing holds up.

@21:35 did Nelson Muntz enter the podcast.

I hope so - I need more Quark, Odo and Sisko impressions!

I mean, if you believe the fan fic, Spock definitely sleeps in Kirk’s bed allllll the time. 😏

TJ Guiney

me listening to this episode while eating my lunch of overnight oats: It’s Okay To Like An Oat

Billie Jackson

I really want to see which characters will grow on them, because most of the main cast and recurrings tend to do that with people. Even the initially grating or annoying ones.

Ben Sharpe

In TOS the live action series the episode Parisdise Syndrome Kirk looses his memory and becomes a medicine man for a Native American village. Love your Spock impressions!

Craig

Yes and the LRM episodes have mostly been terrible thus far. I reckon they’ll come to love Quark - he’s a great character. And they do change their minds over time - in the first episode of the Nexus, Steve says “I’m a Wesley fan”!
