“This cheerleader is vicious!” - Andrew on that bathroom sceneOn this month’s We ❤️ Movies, our Halloween Spooktacular takes over as we’re covering one of the absolute best horror films of the 1990s, Wes Craven’s Scream!

How incredible is that cold open? Did Chris really hear a lewd sound when Tatum bites it? How fantastic are all these huge, tube TVs? Not to mention all the magnificent houses! How cool was it seeing Henry Winkler pop up as Principal Himbry? And how many times, collectively, have the four of us seen this film? PLUS: More talk about the denim industry than you’d expect! And definitely way more talk about the Harry Keitel film, Smoke!

Scream stars Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Skeet Ulrich, Drew Barrymore, Matthew Lillard, David Arquette, Rose McGowan, Jamie Kennedy, W. Earl Brown, Henry Winkler, Frances Lee McCain, Liev Schreiber, Joseph Whipp, and Roger L. Jackson as Phone Voice; directed by Wes Craven.

Never seen Scream. Listening to this will be the closest I ever make it to the Screamiverse.

Tony King

The Dow Jeans just made me laugh so hard. All the Denim Expo stuff is hilarious!

Jason

Put some black eyeliner on, plus maybe some black nails and couple of Nightmare Before Christmas tattoos, and “Andrew Craven” makes for a pretty good lead in a dark romance goth band.

Philly

The postcard on the wall reference…geez 😂

Alex

Guys, no need to micro-target an extended riff on Smoke at me. I'm already a Craven-level subscriber.

MarkNM

I needed this today. Thanks as always.

RJ Cunningham

Wait were carpenter jeans lame? Uh oh

Peter Reynoso

Coming up after the game, denim dad.

RJ Cunningham

The Scream school is like if the cool party kids did not discriminate based on social hierarchy, and were unironically friends with the losers in school by not being able to tell they’re the losers. It’s actually kinda nice.

Mike Kling

I think saw Scary Movie first

Gone

I saw this in theaters back when it came out. I was ten, I’d recently gotten to the “loving horror movies is most of my personality” phase, so this came out at just the right time to be my first favorite movie. Eventually I recorded it off PPV, and I watched it so much that I’ve seen the movie that was after it on that tape, The Trigger Effect, more times than that movie warrants just because it was after Scream. By the way, I’m 100% calling in The Trigger Effect for the next LRM.

RJ Cunningham

My Date with Drew ends with the guy finally getting into contact with her, and what followed is the first scene of Scream

Rob Brown

Remember a decade ago at ComiCon when Adam Wingard revealed that his new movie that was coming out in a month had been a secret “Smoke” movie the ENTIRE time?!

Luke Gordnier

What I’m confused, is thank you for smoking a spinoff of smoke where they tried to reboot the franchise?

Jonathan Lyons

Since we are amongst friends here, I once mixed up Anderson and craven in college and I never heard the end of it for a year

Evan

The kid in that Wes Craven story is either a serial killer or a really cool hang now. Those are the only two possible options 😅

David Thompson

Red Right Hand is the main theme to Peaky Blinders 💵💵💵💵

Eren Keskin

Scoob, I'll gut you like a fish, man!

Eren Keskin

In this universe Eric is following the news, furiously taking notes, finding their work sloppy

RJ Cunningham

I truly associate it with Dumb and Dumber the most. No matter when it’s used, it has a lighthearted tone to it since I associate so strongly with Jim Carey getting tricked by a sweet old lady

RJ Cunningham

I agree with Andrew that the opening font is 100% the Scream font, but for some reason they used a blocky, jpeg version of it. For as astoundingly minor an issue that is, I’m truly interested to know if the production crew noticed/cared. I mean we all did

Robert

This was the movie that really started my love for horror. It’s a shame about those sequels though (although I think 4 is a bit underrated)

Molly Pitzer

I've never hit play so fast when realizing what the episode was! I've been stuck at Loyola waiting for my husband to get out of surgery since 5.00a this morning and after listening to your ep I watched Scream, then a bunch of Scream easter egg/breakdown videos on YT. Weird thing to do at a hospital all day! Andrew, your "anyone ever fuck around with Corn Chex?" line sent me into a laugh-stifling coughing fit in the waiting room, so thanks! 😄❤️

MarkNM

He should have seen it coming.

Skinny

I have seen this movie probably a hundred times. In my top 5 horror all time And I have never associated plop, jeans or smoke with it..... until today. Because now thats all I'll think of . Thanks

Serg Beret

I added Smoke to my watchlist. Thanks, gents!

Watch_N_Rewatch

Besides Scream being so damn good and iconic in every way. I have the best memory of hearing my parents renting the VHS, seeing the football boyfriends guts spill out and they turned it off immediately! They never finished another minute of it! I snuck into the living room that night and watched scream alone as a 10 yr old, my horror movie fascination began. Good times and excellent episode gang 🍻

David Denoyer

"You SMOKE fucks. You've seen one too many movies!"

Hard To Gwil

Wait, a CASE of Mike's Hard Lemonade? Good god man

Busiris

I very vividly remember the first time I saw this one. Was around the time it came out on VHS in '97, so I was 9 years old. I sat way too close to the TV in my big brother's room and was an instant fan, even though I thought it was terrifying. I still haven't gotten around to watching Smoke though.

Craig

Oof. I never understood the point of them making a satire of a movie that was already a satire to begin with. (Edit: having listened to more of the episode now, I want to reiterate I said satire, not parody!)

LoganTheWise

And in the realm of super obvious choices it's also in atleast the first Hellboy

LoganTheWise

Ya... ya get it.. he's got a big red right hand ya see

Matthew Lloyd

Another great tv kill is Grosse point blank.

JK

Well now I obviously have to watch Smoke

Adam Ray

I personally prefer the Charles Dance playing Benedict from Last Action Hero way of pronouncing cretin.

JK

POPCORN

NFlux Forever

"The Town That Dreaded Sundown" exists in a unique realm as the original movie was based (loosely) on an actual killer who terrorized Texarkana, Texas and was never caught. So I think the idea behind going with the meta angle in the reboot was to blur the lines of real and fiction to play up the idea that it was a copycat who was inspired by both the original killings and movie.

Phillip

Great discussion. I really think the Scream series gets better as it goes along and is able to reference itself and build out its own interior mythology because my big issue with this one is all the movie references and dialogue. It makes it feel like its written by Joss Whedon. I think New Nightmare did the same basic concept much better and it gets better as the series goes on, but starting here with all the horror movie references, including Halloween, naming a character in the movie Loomis, it just came off as trying too hard. But once they're able to reference the earlier movies and build out a mythology it really works.

2026-10-13 18:00 Corn Chex are the king of the Chex realm, Rice Chex lags further behind with its blander flavor, and then falling off a cliff of edibility and flavor is Wheat Chex. You get a bag of each in the Costco multi-pack. Last time I bought a box, I put the Wheat Chex out in a platform feeder for the birds...even the birds wouldn't touch them.

Huge props to Steve for mentioning an excellent book by Stephen Graham Jones , who also wrote No good Indians which is insanely good! Nerd points for Steve

Alex Miraski

I had one of those VHS commentary tapes for the Usual Suspects. Came in a two pack. One just the film and one with the commentary. Thanks for this! I’m off to watch Smoke.

Billie Jackson

Is Smoke part of a loose trilogy with Holy Smoke and Fingers?

Jack

Strongly disagree with Andrew that this film is absent homoerotic subtext lol - great episode though, really zeroes in on what makes the script so good, and the Smoke riff is an all-timer

Billie Jackson

Sergio Valente died in the previous jeans expo fire more than a decade prior to the events of this film.

Matzar

I need a Freshjive shirt like yesterday.

Brigid Davis

Tory Spelling was famously left out of her father’s will 😬😂 I’m sure if you send her a Bugle Bucks gift card, all will be forgiven.

Third ingredient the rec for the Indian Lake Trilogy and seconding for Only Good Indians. Aanother fun one from him in the vein of slasher commentary is I Was a Teenage Slasher. A little more on the humorous side than IL, though still with its share of grim moments, it pitches the idea of a movie slasher in the vein of a werewolf-style curse.

Watch_N_Rewatch

Thank you for the recommend Todd and you've got great taste too man. SGJ is so talented and feel the dread his characters feel Everytime. It's addictive.

Rob Brown

I also had the two-tape Widescreen Scream VHS set, and while I’m sure I can look it up, I don’t think it came with anything else, besides the movie on one tape and the movie with the commentary on the other (Edit: I Googled it, and there was another version that had more elaborate packaging and a phone card). I also remember it being a pain in the ass to listen to, because the movie volume was turned down so low under the commentary VO, which also wasn’t loud, and there weren’t any subtitles. This was definitely a Suncoast Video purchase, and it came out right before Scream 2, which was right before Christmas. It’s crazy to think that just a year before, Scream hadn’t even hit yet. I’m thinking that DVD becoming a thing so soon after this really put an end to the idea of separate commentary tapes, because not only were DVDs loaded up with special features, but they were pretty revolutionary in that every new movie that got a DVD release was immediately priced for sale. As someone that was buying movies in the late 90s (and never had a laser disc player), that was HUGE.

Rob Brown

The VHS box was amazing in that it featured pictures of the cast, specifically Skeet and Arquette, looking nothing like how they looked in the movie. I wonder, before the movie came out, did Dimension have so little faith and so little invested in it that they didn’t bother to take promo pictures of the cast to use on things like this?

I'd Rather Have No Name

Came here to comment this a few days late, hope you see it. I heard this analogy on another podcast years ago and wanted to share it. Re: satire vs parody, this was a good example to explain the differences: if we take "Psycho" is the original, "Halloween" (1978) is a homage of "Psycho". Then, "Scream" is satire of "Halloween", and then finally, "Scary Movie" is parody of "Scream"

Kemper

What if I watch Smoke while wearing Bugle Boy jeans?

Jen L Greene

Regarding the VHS commentary tape, I had one for Nightmare On Elm Street. It was a 2 pack set and it came with the film and the film with the commentary.

Lar

Obvs it’s not y’all’s lanes but I do appreciate Skeet and Matt coming out (lol) the last few years and calling Billy and Stu the “first husbands of horror” (although an argument can be made the two lads from Rope beat them to it). A shame we never got to explore that later. I just assumed when they said Stu was coming back for the 7th film that he was going to avenge his dead boyfriend. Ah well.

Smaug

It's OK to like a Chex...except Wheat

Tala Hobballah

Skeet Ulrich aging like fine wine is the best when you see how horrible Depp looks these days.

Dr. Albert Beck

This was an opening night for my wife and I at Bannister Square theaters.

Tristan Clark

I love the scene in The Nun where the titular Nun and Father Rafferty discuss the finer points of Saved by the Bell esoterica at a Quiznos. 10/10 script.

Kaysie Taylor

Great episode! Would have liked a little more love for our final girls Neve and Courtney. The men are great, but the women are the backbone of the movie and I come back to this movie for their performances.

MrBonesMildBride

I wanted to piggyback on the Stephen Graham Jones recommendations for anyone interested in quality horror writing. Check out The Buffalo Hunter Hunter, his short story collection “The Ones that Got Away” as well as a story by his author friend Laird Barron called “Frontier Death Song” where SGJ is the antagonist. I can’t recommend Barron enough either he’s a titan. Happy reading and Happy Halloween, everyone!
