On this edition of Too Old For This Shit, our contemporary pop culture chat show, we're breaking down the first season of HBO's Lanterns!

As rad as this idea is for the season, did the show lean too hard into the grounded, True Detective vibes and let go of too much weirdo space stuff that fans dig about the property? Should they have at least tossed us a Kilowog appearance? How rad was the portal and dead planet beyond? Very '70s sci-fi vibes! Could they have told us a little more about the Manhunters? How about that naked portrait painting?! Would this cool story work better as a Green Lantern movie? How great is this cast? And regardless of our minor squabbles here, we'll definitely be back if there's a season two!

We hope you enjoy Too Old For This Shit! Thanks so much for being the kick-ass supporters that you all are! Ooh nice surprise! I loved the show, but looking forward to hear your thoughts.

In brightest day In blackest night No WHM episode will escape my sight... (Yeah, yeah. I know it's an audio format. It's early and I'm excited for this so cut me some slack.)

Matzar

Ya’ll putting in that good- good work.

Matt

I loved that this show wasn't a typical superhero flying around punching everyone show. But man, do I want a series that is Hal and Jon doing that. I understand this doesn't make total sense. "So you want a realistic, down-to-earth show that's completely off-the-wall and swarming with green constructs?"

Jan

Wow. To say ”peanut butter & chocolate”?? What happened to jam?? No jam?!?

We Hate Movies

Sounds like the words of someone who's never had peanut butter and chocolate together! - Andrew

Mr. Nobody

Could you imagine if we get Kilowog next season

I don’t know how much it costs to get Felipe to do art for you guys but I’d love to see you all as Lanterns, which Eric having the Guy Gardner hair.

Dan sulin

Yeah but he’ll look human 99% of the time and it will suck

Paul

I would love a Too Old For This Shit discussion on “Widow’s Bay”—which I consider the best TV series of 2026.

Mr. Nobody

If its a samoan man named Kilo'og I will be so onboard

Jan

I do not mix pb & problems

I am with Eric on this one. I liked the down to earth nature of the show. Also I know jack about the Green Lantern universe.

I definitely understand Chris's call for seeing John's dad have that fear scene. A scene like the one in Andor where Bix listens to the horrifying death screams of the alien children... We don't hear it. We just see her reaction. And it is powerful.

“Danger Street” is the best Tom King book and he might be the most overrated creator in comics. He takes these wonderfully bright, optimistic, inventive characters and makes them all war criminals, depressios and then kills them. That said Kyle Chandler fucking rules as Hal and somehow this is the best adaptation of the character as a whole. “Separate incidents, mother FUCKER” is my line of the year

NFlux Forever

I wonder if they will do a "Too Old For This Shit" on Crystal Lake.

What i did not appreciate about this show was the Harry Potter references, obviously WB are trying to ensure that TV series succeeds and give more money to that horrific woman.

Matthew Lloyd

I mean maybe, we hear it and see the green light. Personally i thought it was about John Sr seeing something so incomprehensible to him (and having just woke up) that he was unable to accurately explain and get across how messed up it was and therefore others are unable to empathise. Seeing it would have taken that away.

We Hate Movies

We'll be discussing it on OSL this Monday on YouTube.com/WeHateMovies!

I always say that the green lantern IP is to this show like a balled up paper towel that’s stopping a china cabinet from tipping over, like it doesn’t seem important but if you took it out of this show it’s godawful

Frank Grimes

I just came here to say this.

Am now wondering how Tomar Re and Salaak stack up against Kilowog wrt getting freaky. Martian Manhunter does have that one very memorable moment with John Stewart after Cosmic Odyssey's Xanshi mistake. Tom King seems to enjoy SI in characters, so it's unfortunate that that interaction wouldn't fit in a second season.

Billie Jackson

There are more than enough human lanterns (not to be confused with the Shaw Bros horror film Human Lanterns) to use, but if only someone could be Ch'p or G'nort.
