On this Spooktacular edition of Animation Damnation, we're talking about a hilarious episode of The Scooby-Doo Show!

The episode in question, "To Switch a Witch," originally aired back on September 30, 1978, and has our Mystery Inc. friends visiting Salem, Massachusetts on Halloween! Why is every resident of this 1978 version of Salem dressed like it's still the 1700s? How ginned up are these townies to burn someone at a stake? Are our Mystery Inc. friends planning to stay with their friend Arlene indefinitely? Is it appropriate for a 25 year-old stoner and his dog to go trick-or-treating? And were Shaggy and the gang targets for the Mason family? PLUS: Much discussion about total legend, Frank Welker!

Thanks so much for being so awesome and supporting Animation Damnation on Patreon! Please be sure to spread the word! Your support is what keeps this operation going! We know you have a number of choices for pods and we appreciate you spending some time with us!Original cover art by Felipe Sobreiro.

Hot take - Frank Welker actually MURDERED Don Messick so he could do yet another voice and therefore buy yet another golden toilet.

2026-10-22 23:00 Would love to see more Scooby Doo on AD. There's a couple of good straight-to-DVD movies from the late 90s that are pretty good. Specifically Zombie Island and Witches Ghost

Hot take - Frank Welker actually MURDERED Don Messick so he could also take over the Scooby Doo voice thus allowing him to buy yet another golden toilet.

In light of the Manson jokes, I need to give a shout-out to the Venture Bros episode 'Viva Los Muertos!' Written by The Tick creator Ben Edlund, it includes their own take on the Scooby Gang, which is...something else, without giving too much away

Dr. Albert Beck

One of my favorite Scooby Doo Show episodes.

"Sorry Don, that toilet ain't gonna gold itself up!" - Andrew

FRANK WELKER - "Geee I gotta take a piss...where's that sonofabitch Don Messick's grave...? 🤔

Hell yeah, the only place in TV history where you could see Scooby Doo in a toboggan race with Yogi Bear. I think the guys should do a future AD on it if it's bouncing around streaming somewhere.

In your recounting of the Scooby Doo timeline you neglected to mention the 'New Scooby Doo Movies' which was between the original and this version. Those were the hour long eps where they always had a celebrity guest voice (the Harlem Globetrotters are probably the ones most people remember). When I was a kid all three of these versions were just all mixed in and syndicated together. Then came the 80s and Scrappy Doo and nobody wants to talk about that.

I bough the show on prime video at least a decade ago, but good luck finding it with the POS interface they use

I’m with Steve where I can half pay attention, cozy-watch Scooby Doo. The world they live in is almost this empty, urban decay rained out Se7en world. And the constant crime being done by villains dressing up as famous monsters or urban legends? Fantastic. Also Shaggy and Scoob are still what I’m striving to be in life (somehow). Every episode feels like it could make for a decent, low budget 80s horror you find on Tubi. Plus, the charm that older hand drawn animation has.

Venture Brothers deserves its own WHM sideshow. I will die on this hill.

I somehow completely missed this series. I loved the original Scooby Doo Where Are You? and What's New Scooby Doo?. Both bangers.

The title “switch a witch” sounds like a punchline to Eric’s running “don’t check my search history” gag.

Thanks for giving the name of that exact VB episode, because the Manson family asides made me remember this as well

"PROSITOOOOOOTS!!!

And he would have gotten away with it too

So many abandoned amusement parks in the 70s

I find it funny that Eric has just realized that one of the fathers of Mormonism’s name is very funny given the organizations history of child brides

We Hate Movies

oh wow is that why they brought 'em young? just due to the name? - Eric

I've always wanted to remake Requiem for a Dream but animated and cast like Scooby Doo. "Like whoa Scoobs, we better go get that arm checked out buddy!"

The entire bit with the gang being a bunch of murderous drifters is hilarious when I remember a season 2 episode of Venture Bros that featured a parody of the gang composed of famous killers.

I used to think Scooby Snacks were like, edibles in the show. But after watching Wolf of Wall Street again recently, I think they're Quaaludes. Making them all crazy brave and will do whatever you ask them to...

JRC

If, when they run out of Star Trek or Lifetime TV Movies, I'd like to see them cover the entire run of "Mystery Inc" episode-by-episode, which is think is a hell of a show - despite including actual monsters/magic.

JRC

I was always confused when the globetrotters showed up, because they didn't have the weird super powers like they did in their own cartoon. As you say, lots of chum in the 70s-80s cartoon syndication.

JRC

The background art in the original series is TO DIE FOR so lovely and cozy.

Craig

For some reason Welker did not voice the two 2000s movies - they used an Aussie stuntman who happened to be able to do the voice. Maybe Welker asked too much!

One note on the "selectmen". Selectmen act as, more or less, the executive branch of a New England town. However, Salem has been a city with a mayor since 1836
