“This whole tracking shot is brilliant, it’s a super-flex” - Eric

On this episode, we’re kicking off We ❤️ Movies month with a chat about the total banger that is Orson Welles’s Touch of Evil!

How absolutely off-putting is Captain Hank Quinlan in this movie? Is the opening tracking shot one of the most impressive feats in all of Old Hollywood? Wow, talk about bad luck with Janet Leigh and scuzzy, roadside motels, huh? And what on Earth was Quinlan thinking with that gross chili analogy? PLUS: Charlton Heston’s Mike Vargas purchases one product too many from the Acme Corporation!

Touch of Evil stars Charlton Heston, Janet Leigh, Joseph Calleia, Akim Tamiroff, Joanna Moore, Ray Collins, Dennis Weaver, Valentin de Vargas, Mort Mills, Victor Millan, and Orson Welles as Captain Hank Quinlan; directed by Orson Welles.

“Maybe I’ll come by and try some of that chili of yours. Hurhurhurhur.”

I'm in the same boat as Steve, very deficient on old Hollywood. I'd never seen this and I imagine I maybe would've never seen it if it wasn't for you guys covering it - and that would be a shame because it was absolutely excellent.

Tony King

Yeah I'm the same. I have a few old Hollywood movies that I love, but I don't generally watch a lot from that era. I doubt I ever would've seen this either.

Eren Keskin

Uaaggh step on me, Marlene Dietrich!

StumbleSojourn

It’s been around. Down here in Asheville, NC, it’s never gone away.

John Locke

Filmed in the early version of night vision.

James C Harris

Honey Baked Ham is real big in the Midwest. I live in Toledo and there is a HBH call center and they get swamped around the holidays

Steve Lyon

Never gone away in Cleveland, OH area. Gets slammed every holiday for as long as I can remember

John Locke

I think we have one in Connecticut. It's definitely a baked ham company so I assume it's the same. How many could there possibly be?

Billie Jackson

Every Welles is worth watching. The lighting alone. Some of them have such unusual looking people filling out their casts. Off to watch all the versions of Mr Arkadin again.

Hainsworthy

Quinlan is a national hero after that thing in the building in LA.

D Arthur

Orson Welles was a cutie back in the day.

2026-11-04 07:00 Honey Baked Ham is way better than Boston Market. I've never had anything from BM that didn't taste like cheap KFC sides. My dad was pretty close to buying a HBH franchise in Myrtle Beach as a semi-retirement plan. It was super profitable but when my dad went through their books the woman who owned it said she had to be at the store 7 days a week really hustling and my dad wasn't into that.

Hell with the B&W whiners, I think you guys should keep doing one 'old Hollwood' movie every year during WLM month, I say keep it up. As to the film itself, I kept wondering what Quinlan would smell like up close. It has to be eye stinging.

MarkNM

Sir, this is a Wend...ah, fuck.

MarkNM

If you want to do baby steps it's perfectly fine to start with the cliche classics, because they are cliche classics for a reason. The big Bogart movies, Billy Wilder, etc etc

Kevin Lynch

People really complain when WHM talk about B&W movies?

Shrinkflation is some bullshit. The only remaining candy bar that is the original size from my youth (80s and 90s) is Three Musketeers. I know it’s only nougat but I refuse to believe caramel and peanuts (Snickers, Milky Way) cost that much to shrink the fucking bar down to barely above an OG Fun Size. No one is having fun anymore. But we know who took the money! Let’s go get our money back and then buy a shitload of candy bars.

Matt

[Orson Welles voice] Destination. Unknown. Ruby. Ruby. Ruby. Ruby Soho.

Jordan Dollak

How were there no references to his frozen peas recording? Or his drunk Paul Masson outtakes?

MarkNM

I wasn't sure about that comparison. I didn't mind Boston Market but I always thought of it as fast food disguised as home cooking, while HoneyBaked Ham seemed more like Sees Candy or Hickory Farms, things you buy for holidays and other occasions. Boston Markets creamed spinach was underrated however. So is Honey Baked Ham also a place where you can get an individual meal or sit down and eat?

MarkNM

I wouldn't mind an all black and white wlm month next year. If they want to take the sting out they can do Ed Wood and Raging Bull.

MarkNM

Fun sized used to be practically half a fucking candy bar.

Smaug

Yeah, I think fast food is how I think of Boston Market too. Hickory Farms is a good comparison for HBH!

People refusing to watch black and white pisses me off. It comes across as such an ignorant, trashy attitude. I got through to someone once however. I found a clip of the Maltese Falcon in color that said “this is why 9/11 happened.” Someone dude asked “why wouldn’t I watch it in color?” I told him, “it’s supposed to be in black and white, so think of watching it in B&W is like 4K with great sound and color is a crappy, below standard def VHS squished to 4:3.” He said “Oh wow really? Okay then.” Maybe feeding me a line, but I like to think I got through.

Billie Jackson

The Quinlan method of closing a case reminds me of The Glitter Dome starring James Garner and John Lithgow, adapted from Joseph Wambaugh's novel of the same name.

johnny stocker

Oh yeah, Ed Wood for sure. There's also a full on Touch of Evil reference in that movie in the scene where Depp as Ed meets D'Onofrio playing Orson Welles. Gotta watch that one again.

Matt

FIFTY people found this helpful?!

Jack

No idea what feed this would be a fit for but Dennis Weaver totally rocks in the TV movie Cocaine: One Man's Seduction (which also features super intense Jeffrey Tambor and a young Spader!)

Ben Sharpe

Let me just put this gun in the waistband of my sweatpants (Heston voice)

As a fan of the Welles impressions and an owner of the NIGHT VISION t-shirt... this episode is truly a gift.
