Joey Cintron

Ohhhh I been waiting for you to post this one!!! Load up the pipe with old toby and kick back!

Chase Gardner

I'm excited to watch this Are you going to watch the TV show for more middle earth stories

Ludus Aurea

This one is way bloodier than all the LOTR and hobbit movies and way more ridiculous. I just watched extended edition recently and I don’t think I had seen half of the bonus scenes before but lol they’re great.

I agree with your take on this trilogy (to a certain extent). What you probably have to remember is that the book is basically a fairy tale, whereas the other books are more geared towards adults. Bilbo is clearly Tolkien writing a shorter sort of intro to the world and it's something you can read for your kids. Which is why I agree that there are characters who are more shallow, with the exception of Bilbo himself (and possibly Gandalf), and maybe a slight lack of cohesion. In the book you see the same thing, but there it makes perfect sense because it's a fairy tale. Had a lot of fun watching this with you guys and I feel that even though there are aspects of this trilogy that are weaker, it's still a fun time and I enjoy it.

I agree with your take on this one and the three Hobbit movies overall. But, in their defense, the original three LOTR movies have such a high bar to reach and will probably never be reached.....

Mister Lou

I'm with you in that the 2nd movie is the best of all three. They honestly could've killed Smaug and ended it after 2. This is MY first time watching the Extended version. and a lot of the action and battle scenes were extended and less character development.. I hope you give the series a chance. As a LOTR fan, I LOVED it. I know that's not a popular opinion, I think the House of Dragons over shadowed it.

Asher

I just feel sad every time I watch this 3rd film, specially the ending, I love Thorin.

James Forrest

So, guys, I just watched this and thoroughly enjoyed it. And I agree with almost everything you had to say, and the reason for the concerns is obvious. Jackson and his team focussed on the spectacle more than the story. And the crazy thing is that in a three-hour movie there was plenty of time to fit that in. But the fact that much of the movie is taken up by an extended battle sequence detracted from what you guys were talking about. I actually don’t think that the problem was the dwarves though … or at least not one we can totally blame the writers for. I thought for a movie called The Hobbit that we didn’t see nearly enough of the titular character. The book is really, really short … it’s a half of a “part” from Lord of The Rings, a book that is more than six times bigger overall, and there are just too many dwarves in it for you to get any clear sense of who some of them are. It made certain dwarves important; Thorin dies and so do a couple of others, but the real heart of the dwarves in the movie is Balin, Bilbo’s great friend, who is immensely important to later events … and so they had to focus on only a handful of them. I loved all three films, don’t get me wrong … but yes there were storytelling compromises, but that was a consequence of trying to extend a short novel into three massive films. There was always going to be a lag, and I thought over films 2-3 there were some silly diversions when we could have been building the story. The disappointment was that in extending the tale we had plenty of time for the story … you guys are right that we “needed more time.” The problem is that they had the time, but didn’t really attempt to use it well. But yeah, that’s an issue arising from the book itself. Elephant in the room; the battle has spectacular moments, but it’s actually a tiny part of the book. The latter part of the book is all about Bilbo, and that amazing choice he makes to take the Arkenstone and to try to use it to barter for peace. He sacrifices his own share of the treasure for that, it’s an incredibly beautiful and inspiring thing he does there and it is for that reason that he has the honour of a warm welcome all across Middle Earth … when the Fellowship gets to Rivendell in the first part of The Rings, Bilbo is treated almost like royalty. And that’s because he is one of the most honourable characters in Middle Earth, and this doubtless is why the Ring had such a minor influence on him; it found him extremely hard to corrupt. The scene where Gandalf realises that he is willing to trade away his share (earned and deserved) to try to get Thorin to back down is amazing, and it’s one of my favourite parts of the whole story. Guys, that was a pleasure again. I watched it hungover (my team had a very big day yesterday; we didn’t get the result we deserved but the one we needed to keep our title hopes alive and kicking) but that didn’t detract from the enjoyment 😊

Ori

as soon as i saw you call it woke... LOL i know exactly what kind of person you are. God forbid people of colour are represented in middle earth

Ori

I think Rings of Power is worth watching, it's definitely nowhere near the original Lord of the Rings, or even near the Hobbit movies for me, but I do believe it has some really good moments and it's worth the watch solely for the amount of lore. People saying you shouldn't watch it because it is "too woke" are degenerates who haven't evolved as people in the last 40 years. Hoping you won't ignore it just because of them.

Carlos Cardona

Please watch Van Helsing with Hugh Jackman and Kate Beckinsale

KomoUpNorth

If you guys are loving the fantasy I highly recommend the newest Dungeons and Dragons movie. As well as The Legend of Vox Machina on prime. The second is an animated show based on the d&d game played by the cast of Critcal Role

Ori

I completely agree, I only brought up the “wokeness” complaint because another person in the comments is complaining about it haha. Totally agree with all the points you made!

Patrick Jackson

See, I like all 3 Hobbit films (in fact they've all really grown on me quite a bit since rewatching a few times), but even I will still admit that BotFA is the weakest link. Good stuff, but it does seem slightly...off. My theory is that Bilbo, our main character, isn't really a driving factor in it. Yeah, he does stuff, but he's kind of just in the background more than any other film of the trilogy. I will say I really appreciate you giving it a little bit of the business. You guys are always very invested and passionate about the movies you watch, to the point where the cynical part of me wonders if it's more of an act than being genuine. It's actually nice to hear some harsher critique coming from you, if for no other reason than it reminds me that you're not just playing it up for the camera.

Kev

2nd this. That movie was such a breath of fresh air. Glad it was done right!

etienna

why is it not showing the movie? I can't see or hear anything

Victor Ramos

Perhaps you got this question before; WILL YOU GUYS EVER CONTINUE WITH MIDDLE EARTH AND THE RINGS OF POWER?

Roni

Super late to this, and maybe a fact that you already know, but! Sigrid and Tilda, Bard's girls, are actually the daughters of the actor who plays Bofur, one of the dwarves! A fun fact I learned when watching bts content with my dad!

Kyutoko

Gandalf and Galadriel used to be an item. Thousands of years ago. That's why he reaches for her and asks her to come with him. And though they didn't focus the camera on it like Gandalf and Galadriel's rings, you CAN see Elrond wearing the third after Galadriel banishes Sauron.

Kyutoko

Dragon-Sickness is caused by the curse Morgoth placed on all the gold of Middle-Earth, you can't really blame Thorin for it. Being around that sheer amount of gold that he technically owns the entirety of would do the trick on just about anyone.

Kyutoko

Anybody else notice that when the pool of gold closes around Thorin, for a second it resembled the One Ring? Peter Jackson knows what he's doing, I swear.

I was also thinking "How can this be PG-13" at the same time. But then I googled it, and, no... it's not. The extended edition is indeed rated R for the extra violence added in.
