THE THING (2011) FULL LENGTH MOVIE REACTION - WATCH ALONG

Comments

Patrick Jackson

So I'm not sure if they could have ever made this movie in a fashion where I would have said it was "good," or at the least "not pointless," since John Carpenter's 82 version is literally just...perfection. (I mean, no notes, it is flawless.) That being said, in another timeline we would have gotten a better version of this film. There was a lot of time spent on practical effects, and apparently they did some cool stuff, but because of studio interference they replaced all of it with CGI, and also changed aspects of the ending which really made it not make that much sense. I don't know if this movie ever could have been decent, but it could have been slightly better. The special effects department, in fact, was so distraught over the fact that all of their hard work had gone unused that they crowdfunded an entirely new movie called Harbinger Down so that they had an opportunity to use some of the practical effects from the 2011 The Thing. Harbinger Down is an absolute piece of garbage, sad to say. Even for curiosity's sake it's not worth it to check out.

The CGI was the main complaint on this. The story also was not as good as Carpenters but it's still a good story. The cgi took away the raw, visceral feel that made the 1982 The Thing so beloved. Another example of the studio thinking they know better than the writers and directors own vision.

Dale Smith

Despite the movie's drawbacks (CGI etc.) I do appreciate the attempts to connect it to the original using set pieces and props at the Norwegian base, like the axe on the wall and the hole in the ceiling above the ice-block.

danzogonzo

It's crazy but this is a prequel of sorts, to the original... I always hear a lot of bad things about this movie but I love the original the thing and this one is not as bad as everyone says. Can't wait to watch it with you guys. 🍿😎👍

Joey Cintron

I'm 99% sure this was meant to be a prequel to the first The Thing. It has some elements of being a prequel but it also goes off on it's own tangent. I still like it. I think as a stand alone movie it's really not that bad.

Joey Cintron

And why doesn't Denise do the "Dive Right In" thing she used to. LOL

Personally, I enjoyed this movie. When I watched it and started to put together it was a prequal, and not a remake I was happy about that. I was always curious how the events unfolded for that first camp when they were exploring it in the first movie. I would have liked to see more practical effects, but for me the CGI did offer some opportunities that could not be done with practical effects. I also never really took into consideration that the story element that the thing in this was more agressive than the original due to the first contact with humans and then being more cautious in the original with that group. I think that's a really cool assesment about the story aspect of it. When it comes to The Crow remake, I am going to say I don't feel it will have same heart that the original has. I wasn't a big fan of the sequals for the same reason. I also just don't feel it was necessary to use the character of Eric Draven. They could have used a different character. And to be frank, I didn't like the character design for the remake and probably won't like it even if I do see the movie (which I have no real plans to). I am greatly opposed to the idea of remaking some films. But this movie, I did enjoy and never hated it. I was saddened about the limited practical effects, but I don't mind the use of CGI. Besides, I don't consider this film a remake anyhow; which is also why I am okay with it. Remakes as a whole are typically just never as good as the orignal and in my opinion pointless. Some movies should also just not be remade period. A great example (in my mind) is Poltergeist. The original is great! The remake, I hated. It was no where near as good as the original and frnakly just didn't need to be remade. It should be noted that John Carpenter's The Thing 1982 is actually a sort of remake, which is a rare instance of a remake being better than the original. The Original in this case being The Thing From Another World. 1951. I suppose though it being a remake can be argued as it's not like a direct copy of the original given that the creatures are so very different. But I use it as an example here regardless. Some remakes I haven't minded as much. Little Shop of Horrors 1986 is a remake of The Little Shop of Horrors 1960. I'm fairly certain I would prefer the remake in this instance, but I've not had a chance to see the orignal so my opinion on it would be admittedly biased.

Hello guys I love your videos

Dee

Another fun reaction! Practical effects would've been amazing here, but I still enjoyed it enough for a few rewatches. I'm a sucker for creature features though, especially the underrated and even flat out stupid ones from the cult classic Pumkinhead to absolute ridiculous Slugs lol. Even my wrangler is themed & named Creature Feature lol.

Ludus Aurea

I If you don’t memorize everything it’s easy to forget that the first 3 minutes of the original has the helicopter chasing the dog and then when they mention the Swedish or whatever Norwegian base that it was all destroyed. Winstead is great here. I recommend her Netflix movie Kate if you haven’t seen it. Very similar to Gunpowder Milkshake.

danzogonzo

Wait a minute! Pumpkinhead is OP!

Dee

Definitely one of my favorites! But I never hear anyone mention it and it doesn't get included in any reactions come Halloween😞

James Forrest

Guys ... how did you enjoy this one? Is it worth watching? I'll take your word for it if it is cause I've not seen it, although I know it's a prequal.

This Justin

You guys should watch a movie called Toy Soldiers

The Media Knights

It is really hard to top The Thing 82' John Carpenter really did a masterful job. However this doesn't really take away from that film. I don't think anything could. For those who want to see more in the same universe it's a nice treat.

The Media Knights

So sad to see studios meddle with things that were already on the way to be something special!

The Media Knights

The attention to detail and continuity is insane! However was in charge with that task did an excellent job.

The Media Knights

Couldn't agree more. It's not perfect by any means but it's not a complete train wreck.

The Media Knights

Agreed! It gets a lot of flack because of its flaws. Don't get me wrong it has flaws but it's nowhere near the worst film out there.

danzogonzo

And just like you guys were surprised... I thought it was very clever for them to incorporate the very end, with the beginning of the original. Nice move 💯

Melissa Creel

So true. This is actually a good movie. But it could have bedn great if the studio would have just gotten out of the way.

The Media Knights

The thing about remakes...Just don't make them if the story is not gonna be up to par with what came before. Because then it just feels like a cash grab. It's a little saddening that reboots/remakes have gotten this reputation. I hope the studios can learn and give the fans of these films a newer take that elevates the source material. The target audience needs to be a bit more neutral. If the film is good then you'll have longtime fans backing it up and a newer generation will get exposed to a new story. It's a win win!

The Media Knights

It's not better than the 1982 version, it's got flaws but it's still worth watching. It's not nearly as bad as people make it out to be.

The Media Knights

We love creature features! So we totally get you haha It's a shame we will never get to see what could've been with this film.

The Media Knights

Agreed! It exposes a new generation to some amazing stories. Moving forward however we'd like the studios to learn from their mistakes and if they are gonna do remakes/reboots to only put them out there when it's gonna elevate the already great stories out there.

The Media Knights

She says "Alright, were gonna bring it back for special occasions" 😂

Joey Cintron

Yesssss!! LOL I watched the original The Thing reaction you two did, and she did it at the beginning of that one!

Mister Lou

Man, I really enjoy your The Thing Lore.. about that "thing" stealing another alien spaceship to make its way here is the most interesting Fan Theory I've ever heard! Keep up the great work Media Knights! never get tired of your content!

The Media Knights

Honestly I'm in love with how little they've given us lore wise but how intricate it could get. I'd totally love to write a "The Thing" film.

Draethius

I really like this take on a prequel - and yes, it's meant to be a prequel. The dog chase with the helicopter isn't the only sign, but you see the similarities throughout the film, aside from obviously having Norwegians. Another one you pointed out was the guy who slit his own throat with the razor, yes that was in the old film. The ice block that the Thing came out of, you not only see that in the 1982 film, but there was also a hole in the ceiling of the room, where it busted out - the room was also basically similar, it had the same stairs. There was another mysterious hole in a wall in the hallway, where, as we see in this prequel, the thing busted out and they burned it in the snow (the one that fused with Adam's face - and in the original film was the corpse with the weird fused double face that they brought back to their base.) The axe in the wall was also there. I think they did a really good job making the set similar to the old one. I appreciate when people actually think about the details. Like so many others, I would have loved to see some practical effects, but the CGI wasn't bad. And, as you said, CGI really gives the freedom of mobility. The Thing has the option to appear much more aggressive and more of a threat. So yeah, that part a like. But still, they could have used a combination of practical and CGI and made it simply amazing. But oh well. They still did a pretty darn good job. On a final note: it's cool hearing someone else with the theory that the ship didn't belong to the Thing, but it copied an alien life form that owned/created the ship and took it over. That's what I always figured was the case. it makes the most sense. Anyway, thanks for these reaction videos! I've really been having fun watching them. I'm in a place where I currently can't watch films with anyone except a couple boring people that I live with. It's fun seeing reactions to films I really enjoy. :)

Jeremy

Coming late to the conversation, but I think it would have been so much better if Joel Edgerton had reached for the correct ear before Kate blasted him. It would have created a bit more doubt and emphasized more of the paranoia aspect.

M@xR3acts

I guess the reason people don't like it is because it's barely serviceable with some cool scary moments. People called it a step down from the original. The film was a box-office bomb, grossing only $31.5 million worldwide on a budget of $38 million.

M@xR3acts

Whether a film is "good" or worth caring about is subjective and goes far beyond its financial success. Box office performance is simply a metric of commercial reception at a specific time, not a definitive measure of artistic merit or long-term cultural impact . Many films become cult classics precisely because their value is recognized by dedicated audiences over time, often after an initial underwhelming theatrical run. Critical acclaim, audience reviews on platforms like Rotten Tomatoes, awards, and enduring fandom are all alternative, and arguably more meaningful, indicators of a film's quality and legacy than initial sales figures .

Emperor Raven

You don't know what's wrong with this film? Well for starters... you should read up on the issues the director had getting this film out in its original vision, which he couldn't do and got railroaded so hard he quit making films for years on end because he himself was not happy with the end product (don't even know if he continued film-making again). Did you know that they had actually used A LOT of practical effects and had everything ready, then the studio without his permission (or whoever was above him) had most of the way better presented practical effects switched out for the crappy cgi substituted scenes and he had a better origin story for the creature, but that too got changed for some reason. There are several glaring issues with the film, that doesn't mean it doesn't hold its own in some areas, but there's nothing "amazing" about this film either even though I respect the effort of it and the cast is solid to be fair. It's so unfair to the director and hardworking crew that wanted it more like the original and just as many other cases his project got abused and manipulated out of his hands to what we have now, despite the end product actually being much stronger than what we should have received ironically.

Emperor Raven

I agree "box office sales" are not the "be-all and end-all" of a film's intrinsic merits, true artistic quality, value proposition, etc. but sometimes it does have a strong correlation with a badly produced and poor quality film (in the case of something like the Hellboy reboot film for example, which bombed far worse). The Thing prequel is a pretty steep step down no matter how good it can be, so it won't ever escape the shadow of its big brother unfortunately. Anyone who thinks this film is flawless and was "executed to perfection" should read up on what went on during the production of it and how the director's original vision for it got cheapened and switched out crushing his film-making ambitions and passions ultimately.

Emperor Raven

I really respect and appreciate your closing thoughts and post film watching analysis, plus all the interesting theory crafting! Yes, it's also correct that "the thing" was captured by super intelligent alien species traveling throughout the galaxy and it broke free on the spaceship, then went on to ravage it and hijacked all the aliens causing the alien pilot to crash land it into the most remote region on earth! The theories on why the thing was so much more aggressive during this film make perfect sense too and I could go with either, the cgi did help in that regard in terms of mobility and raw aggression. There was actually a much better planned out origin story for the thing for this film and unfortunately it never made it in (we were also supposed to see what the alien pilot looked like on the spaceship, but the studio made the incredibly stupid decision to switch it with those digital blue blocks nonsense in the scene where the thing emerges in the cockpit area), which is a huge blow to the potential writing quality as an epic missed opportunity to dive into that lore. I would say this and the lack of practical effects were the biggest blows to the film, I can't recall what other forced changes transpired but all I know is the major ones really take the film down a peg. I'm so glad you guys researched the behind the scenes production conflicts and turmoil that ensued prior to this film's release, you guys are well educated on those issues and it really left a bad taste in many people's mouths learning about these events. I actually feel we got a decent film and a way stronger film considering the COLOSSAL amount of meddling from the studio's side like you guys pointed out, it's such a shame how the director's work got treated and he was NOT happy with the end product at all (that's why the incident caused him to leave film-making for years on end and not even sure if he returned to his passion after this). I strongly feel this is a decent film that excels in some areas and falls short in a few others, the set designs are absolutely solid and worthy of praise, good sound design and creature sounds especially, the cast is very solid with many memorable characters sporting tight chemistry between them, new scenarios involving combating the thing and ways to corner it to expose it, dialogue is decent and very clever at several turns, characters definitely acted realistic considering their desire circumstances and unnerving realizations, and expectations are cleverly subverted throughout the film that help it stand out from its predecessor which you guys so well pointed out! It was hilarious seeing you guys realize that this was a prequel and NOT a remake at all, another area this film did really well in was connecting the chronological events between the prequel and sequel films for the overlapping events to all make sense and make the connections between the two rock solid. I think they definitely did a great job of building up that harrowing, tense, and psychologically taxing atmospheric tension with good use of sound design, framing within the sets, and psychological warfare heating up between the crew as suspicion began to arise with more incidents occurring! I actually do like much of the film despite its lost potential and I agree, any studio that pulls the crap that they did here over the wishes of the director are ginormous assholes and it's equally disrespectful to the core cast and staff who all poured their blood, sweat, and tears into producing every element of this film. Thanks again for watching with an open mind and being very fair to the film, while also being grounded in where it falls short and who is at fault for those shortcomings — I enjoyed this watch along very much and look forward to many more! :) Anyone who doesn't understand the deep rooted issues with the soul of this film, just research what transpired during its production process and how the director was impacted by having his original vision for the film so badly gutted and manipulated before its release, then you will certainly understand more of the polarizing criticisms against it (I admit despite the production conflicts via major studio meddling I think we got a way better film than what we should have received to be honest). I would encourage The Thing fans to check out the comics, there are so many awesome story lines that branch out and would love to see them on the big screen someday!

Emperor Raven

Nice catches, yeah there are so many solid references connecting the films! Actually that story is correct... I guess you don't know this, but involved in all of the studio meddling was a script change that happened where we were going to see a visual of the alien pilot in the cockpit region of the spacecraft, but instead the studio replaced it with those stupid digital blue blocks stuff when the thing emerged from the cockpit region of the ship smh! I too LOVE their reactions! <3

Emperor Raven

@Mister Lou Word on the street is we were supposed to see a digital visual of the alien pilot in the cockpit region of the spacecraft, but for some reason the studio changed it to those silly digital blue blocks we see instead when the thing emerges from the cockpit area of the spaceship. @The Media Knights Ohhh I would love that, would be amazing! Check out the comics sometime if you can, they have very interesting plot lines, a variety of settings, and scenarios involving combating the monstrosity known as "the thing!" D:

Christian Carrera

you have a react video to the original the remake was a inferior film with most fans myself included
