THE THING FULL LENGTH MOVIE REACTION! - WATCH ALONG

Comments

BERSERKER HALL OF REVIEW S

Been checking out your Tom hanks film reactions past couple weeks and loving them. I checked out a American remake film called A Man Called Otto. Came out in 2022 and it was so good. I strongly SUGEST it when you guy ever have a chance.

My suggestion is John Carpenter's "Starman" (1984), a followup to "The Thing" with another alien shape shifter but a completely different plot where it has visited the Earth on a mission of peace but receives a hostile reception. Upon initial release, the film got a warm reception by fans and critics like Roger Ebert. Thanks for a great watchalong reaction to "The Thing". My first viewing was not in the theater but on VHS and it was so terrifying that my friends and I had to stop the movie to take a short intermission to compose ourselves.

I just joined your channel because, thanks to your experience in filmmaking, your comments made me see the movies you presented from a different angle, seeing some details I missed - very enjoyable experience, thank you! Back to your comments regarding "The Thing" technique and build-up tension: I would suggest you to watch (not necessarily "react" here, but just watch for yourself) Spielberg's first featured movie, Duel (1971) - it's quite unique movie in its style, 1 hr30 mins two characters action, almost no soundtrack, and an amazing camera/lens work. For fun, I remember I watched this on cinema in 1985 with my then girlfriend, at 20 mins mark started a 5-mins sequence so tense she had to get out to throw-up (and she wasnt' pregnant, lol) Anyway, in case you decide to watch it, be sure you have a good bass sound and a big, wide screen, really worth it.

You know it’s scary when you have to pause! What a great film! Adding Starman to our list. Premise sounds interesting. Thank you for sharing! 😃

That means a lot to us! Thank you for watching these movies with us ❤️ Alright! Duel! We’ll check it out. Sounds like the kind of film we’d enjoy a lot 😄

"Duel" really is an early masterpiece. Spielberg's editorial choices are great, as is the sound design. The way the tension builds is like a tea kettle on slow boil. I watched this on TV during either the original broadcast or as a later rerun, then several times again when it became available on disc.

Me, too, I watched it many times, analyzing and trying to understand how, despite its simplicity, mostly only by camera and sound work, with no CGI, no miniature models, no practical effects, it succeeds to build such anxiety and tension, filmed in only two weeks - amazing achievement to me. On the other hand, the more I'm thinking, the more I'm convinced that's a very challenging task to "react" on it: I mean, what you would say to your viewers in real-time? :D To me it's the kind of movie which, in case you didn't gave up after 10 mins, you watch it glued to the screen, then you dissect it afterwards with your friends at a pub, in front of some beers :P

And that's why I'm a cat person!

They do tell you who The Thing is at the end. Notice how you can only see Kurt Russels breath in the freezing cold but you can’t see the other guys? The other guy is infected

Now that was a THRILLING watch along, so glad you guys enjoyed and loved the experience of The Thing in real time as one of the truly psychologically horrifying cult classic horror films (that initially was despised by critics especially for the creature's practical effects transformations and scorched only to later be greatly accepted and embraced with wide scale critical acclaim alongside other masterful science fiction masterpieces)! This movie honestly scares me, but it was soooo much better for me to watch it again with you guys haha! Great thoughts and analysis as always guys, loved it and rock on... look forward to The Thing prequel watch along likewise (I agree the musical score is crazy good and effective at setting the tone and intensity of upcoming scenes)! <3 P.S. You guys remember how in the introduction the spaceship is flying towards earth like it was out of control? I've read that the origin story of the creature is that it was captured by these super intelligent alien species on another planet eons ago and they had it contained on their ship, but it broke out and started attacking the aliens on the ship causing it to crash land in Antarctica (thus "it" was the only survivor)!

John Carpenter's 1982 The Thing was primarily filmed in Stewart, British Columbia, Canada (specifically near the Salmon Glacier), and Juneau, Alaska, with interior scenes shot on refrigerated sets at Universal Studios in Los Angeles. The outdoor Arctic scenes were captured in BC's coastal mountains during winter

@srjcalonso

I don’t know if this was mentioned but I saw a 1950s version of The Thing just like this one. Just black and white lol.

Nowhere Man

Why were they putting the helicopter (fuel) fire out? Just let it burn. It’s not like the snow is going to catch on fire. There are multiple times that fires are started INSIDE the wooden buildings and (somehow) they never burn down. If they’re 3,000 miles from anyone else, why do they have a radio? Who do they talk to on the radio? The nearest (real world) civilizations to Antarctica are 600, 1700, and 2200-2700 miles away. This movie has a LOT of details that (to me) don’t make any sense at all, or at least seem improbable. But the point of the movie is the suspenseful story, not the how’s or why’s. Oh! That one scene with the head was in Stranger Things! The teacher told his date how the special effect was done. Not only that, the remote interaction among alien cells was incorporated in the lore of the Mind Flayer. And it’s pretty obvious where the inspiration for the demogorgons came from. I never realized how much of an influence The Thing was on Stranger Things.
