SE7EN (1995) FULL LENGTH MOVIE REACTION - WATCH ALONG

Comments

Mike

What's in the box? What's in the box?

James Forrest

Ooooh man! Here we GOOOOO ....!!!!!!! One of the greatest movies of the 90's and up there with the greatest of all time. So, so, so glad you guys are covering this! Gonna watch it now!

Kristin

This is probably one of the most disturbing movies I personally have ever seen.

The Media Knights

So much to love about this one! So glad you guys suggested it 😄

The Media Knights

Absolutely nauseating by the end of it. What a phenomenal film!

James Forrest

Well that was wonderful watching that with you guys. Great reactions, great chat throughout, and the best bit was the anticipation of that moment when Somerset opens the box and understands everything. I liked your comment early on about how Somerset has seen it all. At the start of the movie it may seem that way, but you learn the truth as he does. I thought immediately of Ebert's brilliant Great Movies review of this film where he writes: “This is as formulaic as an Agatha Christie whodunit. But Seven takes place not in the genteel world of country house murders, but in the lives of two cops, one who thinks he has seen it all and the other who has no idea what he is about to see.” That is so simply written that I want to smile reading it. The simplicity of words written well, of beautiful writing made to look so easy. But Ebert is right; this story takes those two men on a staggering journey where they will be pushed to the limits of what they think they know. Somerset is a cynical man who sees the world and cannot imagine it being worse, and he learns how wrong he is. Mills is an optimist, a man who believes that good will triumph over evil and by the end he has done evils dark work. It is stupendous. Kevin Spacey is unlisted in the starting credits. His name is not on any of the posters. He was still a character actor at this point, but in the same year he was working on the other film that launched him into superstardom, The Usual Suspects. Please tell me that is on your list. That will blow you away. His performance is incredible, even better than his turn in this movie. But only a great actor could have carried the role of John Doe, and it is beyond impressive the gravitas he brings to it. I still get the chills every time he makes that stunning enterance to the police station to turn himself in, and I've seen this movie dozens of times. John Doe is one of the great film characters of all time and a lesser actor would have made that impossible. Gwenyth Paltrow almost steals the whole film and the second time you watch it your heart will break for her the very moment you see her face for the first time. The weight of every moment she's onscreen is crushing when you know her fate, and you recognise the journey she is on. You guys already got so much out of the scene in the diner; that scene is going to hit you like a sledgehammer the second time you watch it, where the utter desolation is just overwhelming. That desolation is precisely how Mills will feel at that moment at the end. On that note, here's a movie fact. Fincher was under enormous pressure to change the ending. There are actually storyboards of the ending the executives wanted to make instead, and there's a certain ... satisfaction? to them. In those storyboards, it is Somerset who shoots John Doe, to defeat his plan and spare David. It even has a hokey Hollywood sign-off where Mills asks him what he thought he was doing and Somerset says "Retiring." Fincher hated it. But most importantly, Freeman and Pitt detested it. Freeman said it would be out of character for Somerset to murder in cold blood, even with the best intentions. Pitt reputedly threatened to quit the film entirely. And Fincher got his way, just as he would years later with Marla Singer's "I haven't been fucked like that since gradeschool" line in Fight Club which the executives demanded Fincher remove, until he replaced it with a line which you can see on the deleted scenes and is A MILLION times more controversial; Marla's post coital observation that "I want to have your abortion." Fincher is a very, very sneaky man at getting his way! But as much as that Hollywood ending would have been a crowd pleaser, it would have lacked the full and devastating effect of John Doe's triumph. That is why we'll still be talking about Se7en ten years, twenty years, thirty years from now, a nihilistic gut-punch which audiences must have staggered out of the theatres in shock over. By the way, speaking of Fincher's movies, I know you guys have probably heard terrible things about it, but Alien 3 is abysmally under-rated and the director's cut version, put together by Fincher himself from his own workprint version, is as good as any of his films and a superb part of the franchise. Tonally different from the first two, but no less watchable and scary ... and every scene will remind you that you are watching the Fight Club and Se7en guy. It's great. So was that watch-along. Thank you so much guys, I really enjoyed it.

You gotta do Zodiac and Gone Girl if you haven't seen them already. Zodiac is probably my favorite Fincher film that I've seen. I also wanted to tell you that you two do a great job and you're easily in my top tier of reaction channels. I really enjoy that you have the knowledge to comment on things like cinematography and acting. Sometimes reaction channels have people who act like they've never seen a movie before and don't know basic story telling or they constantly ask questions that get answered by the movie within a few minutes. Also, I don't think this gets mentioned enough, but thank you for the technical and production quality. There's been more than a couple reaction channels I had to give up on because they would never add a timer or anything else to improve the usability of the reactions. Great work, I look forward to seeing more!

In case anyone didn't quite understand the quote, "Jodie Foster told me to do it", it was a reference to John Hinckley, a man who became obsessed with Foster after seeing her in the movie "Taxi Driver". Hinckley had stalked her and eventually tried to get her attention and impress her by attempting to assassinate President Reagan in 1981. Those of us around back then remember it very well.

Holy shit! I'm here! I'm in! I'm sorry for fan girling but 🤯 I'm going balls deep and you can't stop me now! MEDIA KNIGHTS ALL DAY BABY!! 😘🫡🤪

Sutil

Did you guys notice Senior Drill Instructor Hartman from Full Metal Jacket as the chief of police?

Blaze118

Any sane Prosecuting Attorney, Judge, Jury would declare what happened with Mills a Crime of Passion and dismiss with extreme prejudice. Especially given the circumstances surrounding THIS specific case and how unbelievably messed up John Doe was. I don't know how my wife does it working as a Sheriff's Deputy. She's always calm, collected, and she doesn't let her emotions get the better of her, especially when she deals with people like Child Predators. I couldn't do it. Like you said, after everything John Doe has done, you just want to knock his teeth out, you want to torture and make him suffer or people who have done similar messed up things to others for whatever reasons. Truly one for the f**ked up and disturbed category. Loved the reaction from you two as always and I look forward to your next ones. Still need to watch the Society of the Snow Reaction.

Sutil

Lol

I agree... I'm just starting to doubt their movie selection... especially the new one they did for "Godzilla" ... hopefully they'll get back on track reacting to important films...

The Media Knights

Glad that Fincher got to keep his ending! It's absolutely brilliant. Truly enjoyed how the film was able to make the audience feel exactly the way our leads were feeling. Everything from the way it's shot to the way it's lit gives off this incredible sense of dread throughout. The final moments that we get to spend with the two detectives and John Doe feel like the longest most tense sequence ever. Fearing the worst and then it becomes a reality leaving the audience feeling exactly the way that Mills feels. Definitely a ballsy move and we're so glad Fincher went all the way! We've been wanting to continue the Alien franchise despite everybody saying it's the worse thing in the world. We'd love to see Fincher's take on it. We've seen some of the best in the franchise I think watching some of the ones that are criticized the most could be an interesting exercise for both of us.

The Media Knights

Truly appreciate your compliment! It means the world to us and we are so happy to hear you've been enjoying these. Zodiac and Gone Girl are added to our list! Thank you for your suggestions. After watching this we cannot wait to see what else Fincher has done.

The Media Knights

Haha! Thanks for watching these with us! We're happy to see you've been enjoying these ❤️

Denise and I continued our conversation about this film today. And we were trying to figure out how would Mills story continue. We came to the same conclusion. That the line at the beginning of "Crime of Passion" was inserted there and it had a purpose. We also wondered if John Doe had completely succeeded since he was trying to cleanse the world. Did Mills change his ways because of this event? Making him think twice before acting or having a different point of view on life. If that's the case John Doe not only succeeded in his plan by making Mills shoot him but he was also right about the cleansing as horrible as that sounds. We also wondered if this just pushed Mills over the edge making him embrace that anger for years and years to come. He was already a hothead but what would happen after this. Love that Fincher leaves that open for us to dissect. Thank you for your comment! Love that we get some clarity through reading you guys!

For sure. Thank you guys again. I've been bingeing your channel since I discovered it, I became a Producer Knight and Patreon member in just over a month, I think, you guys are awesome. 😎 🫡💯 I'm currently going through some things in my life but you guys always put a smile on my face and I love it!... One thing I'm trying to figure out though... I trying to watch the Seven movie reaction with you guys but the screen, turns into a little blurry box and I can't see the actual movie. Is that normal or is because of the way I'm watching it? I don't know how any of it works to be honest, you guys are the first Patreons, that I was willing to pay for! Just so I could have early access and vote on your next movies... In any case, thank you for blessing me with any acknowledgement and "diving in" to all your videos 😁 I don't have to say it because I know that you guys will constantly do it because you have constantly done it 💯 KEEP KICKING ASS!! MEDIA KNIGHTS POR VIDA!! ❤️‍🔥

Believe me, Alien 3 is a great film, just very, very dark and different from the first two, but then the second is radically different from the first and the third is more like one than two, which I suppose is one of the reasons I enjoy it so much. Bear in mind though, the Assembly Cut is the superior version of the movie. I said earlier it was his own cut; actually, it wasn't released by him at all but by the studio in an effort to resurrect the movie after he basically disowned it. He is happier with that version but his overall memories of the film are still pretty negative because he got a lot of pushback from the studio over his vision for the movie and it's not fully realised because they cut his budget, but the Assembly Cut version is vastly better than the original cut and it has a proper devoted cult following and a lot of retrospective love. (By the way I still liked the original a lot. But there are maybe four films I've ever seen - Alien 3, Kingdom Of Heaven, Gladiator and Aliens - where the Directors Cut is so much better than the original that it makes watching the original virtually impossible.)

James Forrest

You guys MUST do Taxi Driver, and Raging Bull, Scorcese's early masterpieces and the movies that made Robert De Niro.

Jeffrey Miller

I think they would have to charge him with something, probably voluntary manslaughter or whatever the least severe charge that met criteria. There is overwhelming evidence that Mills killed John Doe, and as sympathetic as Mills may be, he shot an unarmed man who was on his knees and in hand cuffs. People might say, "Well police get away with killing people all the time," which is a view I'm often sympathetic to, but in the vast majority of those cases the offending officer can can claim they felt their life was in danger, as flimsy as that defense may actually be at times. That being said, Mills would never serve any time even if he was convicted. His defense would be very strong and he'd be the most sympathetic defendant in the history of crime. Then you have to figure that the other officers who witnessed the shooting would do everything they could to give testimony beneficial to Mills. Then you have to consider the DA would probably do the bare minimum to prosecute this case. In fact, it'd be better for Mills to be tried and acquitted/get a slap on the wrist so he'd be protected from any future prosecution.

LOVE that you guys keep reacting to more and more of my favorite 90s films! The black and yellow striped books that Mills is reading is meant to be a joke. They are called “Cliff’s Notes”. They are cheat guides for students, summarizing every chapter and explaining all of the themes and symbolism. They were a popular way of students to get around not having to read the actual book. For a long time they were considered to be a form of cheating, and teachers frowned upon it. That’s why Mills hides them in his desk when Somerset walks in. And later on when Somerset asks “Oh you read the books??” It’s supposed to be funny when Mills says “Yeah of course I read them” 😂

Stephanie

I don't think that it has anything to do with him being a sympathetic defendant or cops getting away with everything. He simply wouldn't be convicted because of temporary insanity.

Seshen

Saw this posted on the Youtubes and I am thinking to myself, I can't watch this with cuts!! So I signed up and gonna finish out this work day then get my popcorn on and watch this beautiful flick with ya'll! Love your guys' respect, appreciation and craft for movies. very excited to be here!

rue

Love the chick's reaction.

Josh the Alien

If you like this, you should watch Sicario - great and surprising story telling

Ricardo Alanis

Learning English I watched a lot of movies, including this one, with closed captions. In the climax, Somerset says “If you murder a suspect, it’s death row all the way, and you know it.” And while it’s not reiterated, it was clear to me why Mills was the 7th victim.

Vince

If you want to add an another layer of bleakness to the movie, think back to when Tracy and Somerset are talking in the diner. Somerset tells her that when his ex got pregnant he struggled to understand how they could bring a child into such a shitty world, and then tells tracy that if she decides not to keep her baby, she should never tell Mills about it. We know Tracy doesn't want to be a burden to Mills, and in the final showdown scene, Mills doesn't know tracy was pregnant... So we can infer she was planning on terminating the pregnancy. --- Also re: your question about whether one can see John Doe in the background of any scenes. There is a theory that the man with the umbrella looking through the window of Wild Bill's leather shop when Mills and Somerset are talking to Bill is John Doe

Jonas Solberg-Hansen

I am rewatching this with you guys after 2 years, watched it a year ago for the first time alone, but can you guys please watch Zodiac? Fincher's masterpiece in my eyes
