Askeladd or we call the character Askeladden/ Espen Askeladd here in Norway is a made up recurring character in a lot of old Norwegian folktales. He is usually the hero of the story, known to be a prankster and i believe stories of him were popular during the viking period here (also way after as well, i also grew up with stories about him haha) -in case people were wondering if he used to actually exist or not☺️

thorfinn's sister breaking down ALWAYS gets me

The one thing that always made Vinland sage stand out to me, is just how real it gets. It's a fictional show with animated characters but the raw emotion and harshness of life, makes the characters feel more real than most live action shows.

It's always interested me that Askeladd isn't keeping Thorfinn hostage– it's Thorfinn that's following them around for that chance to duel, he could technically leave anytime. Askeladd is defo taking advantage of Thorfinn though lel.

Revisiting these early episodes makes me remember how good the soundtrack is. Like every piece gives me goosebumps. Respect to the boys for the double upload too!

Well thorfinn is a child I don't think he could safely survive such a young age alone, he could end up being killed or enslaved if he wasn't under their direct "protection"

Something neat I had read from another comment is that Thorfinn doesn't know English, which is obvious ofcourse. He knows the word for "Run" likely because that's what he's heard villagers shout whenever the Vikings appear
