All my friends hate Askeladd

The mangaka could have completely skipped this part and I would say 99 percent of the audience would have completely loved askeladd by the end of the season. But this episode is what made you as the audience so conflicted with the character of Askellad. You like him but u also dislike him so much because of this. He would do anything to protect his people

Which is funny because he doesn't even care about any of them besides Canute

"As we go along it gets more peaceful in history." Are you sure about that Teji?? 😅

Yah by “his people” I think he meant the Welch people Askeladd doesn’t care about his men as much as they’re useful.

I'm just telling you that the relationship with Askeladd is complicated at first and then it changes a little...

I just wanna say the mangaka did a phenomenal job making Askeladd the protagonist for season 1 because it just prepares us for the Thorfinn greatness in season 2

Apart from showing Askeladd as a man who tends to choose the "ends justify the means" path (they were stuck in a storm here and they needed to survive), I think the mangaka is also reminding the audience that our protagonist is a part of the Vikings. This is essentially what they did (akin to what all invaders did..the Crusaders later were not much better and in some cases were worse). By using the English's perspective, we're reminded this was the culture and world they lived in. No rose-colored glasses here. These portrayals of violence are essential to the theme the mangaka ultimately is driving at, just as season 1 is essential to season 2 of this anime.

Can be a bit confusing for people who don't know the historical background. The "English" during this time were the Anglo-Saxons. They were the ones we see the Danes attacking/fighting against the majority of this season. The peace treaty was what Askeladd's people (the Welsh) wanted.

Angelalala touches on this point a bit I believe, but to add further clarification the town they raided is located in Mercia and not Wales. The fact that the town was in "enemy" territory doesn't make the events any less tragic, but at the very least you can clear Askeladd's name of killing Welsh citizens Crazy powerful episode though. The previous episode sheds light on the mystery that Askeladd, his noble ancestry and the selfless goal he works towards putting him in a good light. This episode highlights the absolute worst of Askeladd, even ignoring his major actions themselves as you may excuse them to the extreme situation, that he jokes with the father right before having them executed highlights his cruelty. With the many facets of his personality, and how he chooses to push the plot forward, he may not be a great person but he is a great character.
