The last two episodes are perfect for the questioning of Askeladd's character, decision making as well as actions. Askeladd is a shrewd, cunning, strong and very tactful warrior. At this time, you see the darker side of Askeladd's character when it comes to how far he will go to achieve his goals and avoid the worst outcomes possible, no matter what heinous and cruel decisions he has to make. From Askeladd's point of view, his actions lately are of a man who is not just in a unique and potentially very profitable situation, but is also a loyal Welshmen gambling it all on what he can gain from a very weak and doddered on prince. His actions with the village simply comes down to survival and stealth. The action of killing off Ragnar is to simply see if the potential he sees with the "fledgling" Canute by taking off the Ragnar shackle, will pay off or not. I don't like the decision personally with the village, but when your desperate and gambling with everything on the line, trying to put morale thoughts into the conversation, especially when it comes to Askeladd, he just simply doesn't care, as long as it works in the end.
