Hi everyone! πŸ‘‹

After a few busy weeks teaching, I finally had some time to work and publish a new tutorial series! It covers a subject that many of you are familiar with: hanging wires, cables and chains!

This new series covers the mathematics and implementation of catenaries, the mathematical objects used to model physically-accurate hanging chains.

Catenaries for Gamedev

Two Unity packages are available for this tutorial:

  • The Standard package includes the code to efficiently draw 2D and 3D catenaries, along with a simple test scene;
  • The Advanced package includes support for skinned models (such as 3D wires and chains), along with a cool corded cable HDRP shader.

If you end up using this tutorial, I'd love to see what you are making it! So please, feel free to share it with me!

The Mathematics of Catenary - Alan Zucconi

Many modern games feature hanging wires, cables and chains; this series of tutorials will explore the mathematics behind their shape, which is known as catenary. You can find the Unity package to create catenaries in Unity at the end of the post.
