Brig, there's actually a running joke in the fandom about the Scout Regiment having a million different names (Survey Corps, Recon Corps, Scouting Legion, Scout Regiment, etc).

I can see why Brigg would say these episodes are mid for him when this is like his what, 3rd rewatch? And the juice of these episodes are just details of the world building. So definitely watching it the first time you’re just information overload, and the second time you’re just watching out for all the foreshadowing. I will def say I completely forgot the chemistry between certain endgame characters.

I personally don’t care much for ep 14 and 15. However I really enjoy getting to see the other characters go through their struggles to join the scouts in episode 16 so that’s a good episode for me. I think ep 15 might be my least favourite in the series

Mud? For someone whose favorite show is Naruto that is a crazy statement because 80% of that show is considerably worse than this. It’s almost as if Brig is intentionally ruining this rewatch because almost all he does is complain, and it’s weird because it’s his wife’s first anime as well as Bradlynn and Eves. At least the girls are appreciating it, and I loved bradlynn and eves insight in the outro! Riley is also amazing! I loved these episodes because like Eve said it’s so nice and interesting to see how the rest of society works and to actually see the repercussions of the madness that was the first 13 episodes. I never thought a show would pass Game of Thrones as my favorite and Attack on Titan is comfortably the best I’ve ever seen and I can’t wait for these amazing gek girls to see what is ahead!

Oh interesting, I had the opposite feeling. This episode just hits much better when you know the story. Some foreshadowing, some themes that are echoed throughout the series being introduced during this episode such as « what are we dying for », Erwin’s plan being set in motion, etc… Hanji’s experiment is really the only part I can get bored through during a rewatch but I am maybe missing something. On the first watch, it might be one of the few scenes that feels like it matters though haha.

I think it’s perfectly okay to call these episodes mid. Mid just means average. The episodes are necessary but when you know what’s coming, calling these episodes mid won’t even matter because the show itself is a comfortable Stier. I don’t think Brig was hating at all.

Hearing the girls thoughts and seeing their reactions to certain things makes me way too antsy for them to see the story unfold. They seem to be a lot more intellectually and emotionally driven rather than action driven, which is amazing but also slightly sad since AoT has some of the best action ever made. Good thing the story is also very deeply rooted in it

My heart broke when I heard Eve say Levi is a psycho. Glad that the ladies understood that scene in the end because Cannon was absolutely irritated on his first watch. Cannon was the Mikasa on the couch lol.

I don’t these episodes were mid at all. World building is always necessary and AOT does it very well. We don’t get a narrator introducing the world, politics, etc. instead, we see it through dramatic and interesting scenes, which requires a much higher writing skill. Also, Great character development for Jean in these episodes. We see how hard it is for the cadets to join the Survey Corps, all the risks involved and the courage needed. We’re also being introduced to the Survey Corps as a whole for the first time. Mike who sniffs people, Oluo who bites his own tongue, and Hange the experiment maniac. She might appear eccentric, but she is also empathetic, open-minded, and curious. Yes, they are eccentric but they are also heroes who have dedicated their lives to humanity. The fear of the cadets is perfectly juxtaposed to the composure of the scouts. All the nuanced interactions between characters and all the foreshadowing are also crazy. These episodes can never be called mid since the writings involved in these episodes far exceed most anime. Exposition is always needed for the climax to really hit, and AOT does it perfectly.

Bradlynn questioned if Levi was that good, why would he join the scouts instead of the military police. It has been explained that the top ten in the cadets can join the military police, but this time, only Annie (fourth place) actually joined. Mikasa is the valedictorian but she joined the scouts as well. So It’s a matter of personal choice. Plus, you all mentioned that Levi seems to hate the government.

You can still call episodes mid even if they are important to the story. Every episode in attack on titan is important to some extent but there are some episodes which are just not as exciting as others. These episodes I agree with brig are pretty average (I like 16 though) compared to aot high standards but they also aren’t terrible episodes. Mid literally means middle aka average episodes

Mid has become such a derogative term. You can say they are average by AOT standards, but they are objectively better than most similar scenes in other shows. If that’s mid, you’re almost saying everything that has to do with world building is mid.

'Mid' might sound harsh but i get it, it's all relative, compared to the episodes before and what is to come this is definitely one of the weaker stretches of the series. The pacing and flow just feels off, I feel like this should have been two episodes. And the one girl in the middle (sorry bad with names) is also right that if it was just nonstop frenetic action like the beginning of the season you wouldn't have time to breathe and understand the world/characters. They definitely get better at doing compelling "non-action" episodes as the series goes on.

They're something that I feel most people here want to see, and it'd be cool since few/no people on the couch have watched some of them. Edit: you'll get to see Marco again 😅

I love these episodes. Show has incredible dramaturgy and forward momentum beginning to end On a rewatch, Im really soaking in how "precise" the anime adaptation translates Isayama's panels. Edits/cinematography have a lot of patience and attention to detail you don't see often in other animated shows.

These episodes are so important particularly 1x16 is so dramatically and thematically resonant and so vital to these characters' progressions. Glad the girls are liking it so much, I love how they've attatched themselves to the secondary characters like Jean Conny and Marco that's how you know they've been hooked :D They're going to love the next arc

You are the GOAT. I think OVA means "original video animation" but they're like side episodes. Many of them are better animation quality too because of their higher budget iirc. Almost all of them are interesting and give background to certain characters.

i totally get where brigs coming from. this is probably the lowest point of the show/season, but its not bad, nor is it unnecessary filler. all give context and build up the next arc. its not the best but it needs to be there. its good mud

im gonna sound like a broken record.. but i LOVE the respect all of you guys have for jean in this watch through. especially the girls and goat eve. jean really is one of the most down to earth characters and if you're paying attention he has so much good dialogue, monologues etc.
