I think a lot of people don’t love Skypiea because the Straw Hats kind of take a backseat, and it doesn’t really feel like it’s about them. But the backstory is really well done, and the way it all ties back to Jaya is super clever. I’d say Skypiea is B-tier for me. Water 7-EL is S tier.

Nick appreciate your opinion but I don't get it anyway. You can't suggest to skip a canon arc and call yourself a one piece fan. Even continuing the show after that doesn't make sense lol I could at least understand why some people suggest to skip skypiea or LRLL cause those arcs felt "detached" from the main plot (or so it seemed earlier), but skipping TB is borderline criminal

The skip Skypiea thing has become a meme now but there were people really arguing for it. Skypiea in general got a lot of flack for some reason but has gone through a redemption arc in the fandom. Imo it was always great, the location, the humor, the themes, everything. It's a really well-written arc and I'm glad you guys enjoyed it even though it's disconnected from the main story

I always heard skip skypiea, not thriller bark when I was watching in the late 2010s but once one piece reacting started to become big, every reactor would apparently get a bunch of commenters suggesting to skip the arc. Which I think is around the time Jack started watching(2019/2020+).

One Piece week? Can’t wait! Predictions are overrated, it’s much more interesting to hear you talk about what you think of what you’ve seen than what might happen in the future. And agreed, the way past and future is tied together is one of One Piece’s greatest strengths. And I’d say that all parts of the story are important, and I don’t think that there is any arc that is completely standalone. Except for Gaimon, if you count that. Yeah, there’s no impact damage on rubber, which makes the impact dials so special (ironically, with the name, lol). They create a shockwave that causes internal damage even on Luffy, bypassing his powers. When Wyper says that the ”land” won’t be defeated, it’s very much literal, as he’s talking about ”daichi” (大地), the actual earth/ground. As in, lightning strikes may destroy the island clouds, but it can’t destroy the ground that is made of earth. The anime removes a lot of blood, which occasionally makes it harder to see what’s going on. Ener’s attacks names a whole bunch of different thunder gods, and by the end there he takes the shape of Raijin (from Buddhism/Shinto). The thing that looks like a floaty shawl around his shoulders is called a Hagoromo, and is often used to imply or denote divinity (in myths it’s a tool to help gods and other divine beings fly). You’ve probably seen it in other anime as well. Luffy is also the only person on the crew she has called by his actual name instead of by his title/position. I think that she finds him utterly fascinating, because he defies all expectations at every turn, and does what others would never attempt. And I also think that she really understand how Wyper is feeling in this moment.

The Skypeia story and setup is really great, but watching it outside of One Pace is a drag. It has 63 episodes outside in the normal version. In One Pace it has 23. That 40 episodes less. The major flaw of the One Piece anime has always been the pacing.

There are characters , concepts, and setup that are put into every arc that will at some point be relevant or make their return. And even if they dont the stories are important for the characters growth as well as expanding the lore of the universe. No canon arc is skippable point blank. I know >10 one piece fans irl and none of them have skipped or thought of skipping canon its only random comments you see online

Maybe this is just me but it's not completely necessary to have an arc tie in to a bunch of different things. Yeah it's cool and great story telling but to be so concerned about that part of it that you consider skipping canon material is kind of wild to me. Sometimes it's okay to just enjoy the detours

Hm, I feel that's missing the point of their characters a bit? The parallel is that Wyper and Cricket are a sort of proxies for Kalgara and Norland, that Wyper feels a connection to Cricket through his presence, feels as if he has a chance to speak to Norland through Cricket, and himself sending the message in place of Kalgara. He's not supposed to talk about them as "them", as something outside himself in this moment, IMO.

I disagree, if it wasn’t for all of Cricket’s ancestors insisting to him that Noland was telling the truth, he wouldn’t have even set out to confront the issue. They all have as much value in making this moment possible, just like the past and current shandians have from carrying on Calagara’s will/promise to ring the bell. So I can see Wyper thinking about them too.

Yeah there’s lots of little lore and subtle portrayals, of future big things, scattered through out the whole arc. A big positive about one piece is that the pay offs are huge, the more you watch and get invested into the show, the bigger and better the long pay offs will be. So even though you should never skip canon of any story, you especially shouldn’t with one piece.

I’m not saying listen as in take in and then comply with the demands I mean that no matter what arc it is there is always people that say skip it and it’s not even worth asking the comments if you should skip a canon arc . Recently jack said that you should watch some of long ring long land, especially the end, while asking about one pace when you should just watch what’s canon and keep it simple like that . That’s just my opinion on watching or consuming a story that I feel leads to the least amount of confusion, which i’m sure you guys do too, that’s why I suggest an online filler list or simply one pace so that you don’t get mixed messages on what is required viewing and what isn’t from commenters

Cover story reactions would be great. They are a series of multiple mini story arcs consisting of just front pages of the manga chapters(one panel and caption per page) and are canon. They set up future things and explain what some characters are up to after their featured arc. There’s a YouTube channel that made them into PowerPoint format videos with narration and colour, it should be easy to react to with your normal set up. Each are 4-8 minutes long each and there will be 9-10 you can watch this year depending on what anime episode you’re on. I or someone else who’s knows of the videos can dm you guys. Or you guys can just do one per week sometime soon as a bonus drop instead😆.

Definitely check out the cover stories of the manga they are Canon and aren't shown in the anime, there's a youtuber called "virtual vanguard" who has covered them all with narration and has a playlist in order, just make sure not to watch past your current arc. These are mostly fun side stories of the side characters and villains but sometimes important, for example why the Shandian have wings is only explained there. One Piece Color walks are Odas art books on One Piece also really cool and detailed work, you can probably find them from the internet if you don't want to buy them Oh and SBS corners are also great (Fan questions answered by Oda)

Another thing you guys could check out is the ‘THE ONE PIECE| Production Notes Volume 1: Staff Interview’. Which is an interview/insight/behind the scenes into the current production process of the WIT studio one piece remake. It is a video that came out last year and is around 20min long. There aren’t any spoilers either apart from a brief period from 4:31 to 4:43, you can just look away for those 12 seconds and you’ll be all good. Jack can double check himself first to confirm(no spoilers for Jack). If you guys are interested on deep diving into One Piece check out the Drawk show in youtube. Basically a guy makes his mom read One Piece for the first time and they talk about every arc after reading. She goes so deep into analysing it blew my mind over and over with all the details she was able to find, she predicted the big 1071 episode reveal while still in Jaya with all the foreshadowing and symbolism hidden everywhere.

100% check out the cover stories. They are all cannon and give context to the outside world that the anime never showed. Also don’t watch the live action the spoiler is pretty huge and is so much more impactful if u get that reveal in the anime. Sbs reactions would be cool too, oda has so much lore and fun facts that he never drew but instead answered in the sbs.

No dude, Cricket told the straw hats that Noland’s relatives who knew him, insisted that they believed him and passed down that information to their future generations until Cricket was told by his own living relatives. Multiple of cricket’s ancestor vouching for Noland in despite of the world accepting Noland as a liar, is probably what stopped Cricket from accepting the common narrative, and made him go to find the truth for himself. Noland’s relatives and future descendants kept that hope and information alive out of respect of Noland and their ancestors, some of them throughout the generations definitely would have believed it and/or cared to pass it on, otherwise cricket wouldn’t have been talking about it. So no, I don’t feel toei was missing the point the point with that addition. It works and it was great.

i totally get what carter was trying to say and only recently was able to articulate what exactly one piece does that's different from other shows like demon slayer. oda takes his time to step away from his main characters for however long is needed to build backstories and characters, some people (quite the illiterate part of the fandom) will go and say it's boring, but it's truly what makes an arc great and memorable. it makes the pay offs so satisfying because oda was confident enough in his storytelling to get you invested in these side characters that are not even there in the story anymore. it makes it feel like you learned real history of people who lived breathed suffered and died. which makes you want to see them get the justice they deserve. going back to the comparison to demon slayer, it is a character focused story, it was always about tanjiro and nezuko, even if the author wanted to shed light on other character/ demons, they're always structured to happen at a specific time (when they are defeated) the author never dedicated 50+chapters away from her main cast to explore other narratives and characters due to the fear of losing readerships. i don't mean to glaze oda, but think about it, having to release 1 chapter a week and having those chapter not include the main cast at all and still ranking super high in readership is insane and impressive.

I don't think it's the ONLY time (there's when he thinks of a doctor in Drum Island too, at least in the manga), but yeah, usually his thoughts is conveyed in images rather than words. Which I really like! The combination of showing him remembering something and then acting with that in mind is a great way to show character IMO. It's done here too: when Ener says he's going to destroy the whole of Skypiea Luffy remembers first Conis breaking down over leading them into a trap in the beginning, and Aisa asking if her home is going to be destroyed. He turns visibly angrier at these memories, and goes in for the last punch. This happens a lot, and I just love this as a storytelling mechanism, it's such a natural way to build characterisation.

also one thing i wanna shed light on is speech patterns you might've missed to due translation, whenever usopp goes " i will do this attack" or whatever he uses the term "ore sama" which roughly translates to "the great me" so he'd be saying " the great me will take down this beanstalk" if you would analyze a character based on their speech pattern i would say it's as if usopp is trying to compensate being, as you guys describe, useless with terms like "captain usopp" or "ore sama" also im pretty sure a lot of people have mentioned already how robin address the straw hats with their positions to their faces rather than name (except sometimes luffy for reasons cant be mentioned now) but it's a few cool takeaways you can keep in mind this far into the story

Yep, its the same reason why fantasy epics such as Stormlight Archives or The Wheel of Time are so deep and enjoyable - but for many they just cannot sit through 1k+ page books especially when some series have 12 books. People who do read it see the vision, see the deep connections and understand why there needs to be dozens of chapters sometimes inbetween main character development - it makes the story and the world whole. Oda writes in the same way ultimately - with some modifications due to his whimsical and silly style and world, and the format being weekly.

I won't say what but if you're caught up on the most recent 3 arcs in the anime you'll have an idea what i mean. I love the g8 filler arc, and recommend anyone who asks if they should watch it to definetely watch it through, but I think its perfectly fine to skip. The only 'mandatory' filler I would say is Fan letter since it really does elevate certain moments it features to new levels. Especially as reactors trying to satisfy an audience and working their way through one piece, if they feel the need to use one pace I think skipping G8 to get to stuff like water 7 sooner is okay.

Long Ring Long Land is from a narrative and literary point of view a solid arc, sets up the themes of the saga almost perfectly and bar for bar in a lower stakes environment and fufills the role of sampling the story as an introduction, it gets a lot of unneeded hate. However, I think on a surface level it does fall short and fails as a light hearted arc to break up the intensity of skypiea and water 7, I don't think it should be skipped due to key moments happening in it (Ice), yet I don't fault for anyone thinking its ungodly boring especially if you watch one piece for the action, I would love to see LRLL reimagined with an event akin to the start of One Piece: Stampede, would solve a lot of its problems imo.

Fan Letter IS technically filler, it's just filler that's made by someone who I feel profoundly understands the source material. It adds a perspective that I feel increases your understanding of the canon material. That cannot be said about the vast majority of added filler padding in the rest of the series, where characters are flanderized, plot themees simplified or even corrupted, and which obscures what the canon plot is trying to tell you. (Edited to add: I haven't watched G8, so I'm not talking specifically of that, it might be an excellent character study for all I know.)

All that Cricket says is that despite the verbal abuse they had to withstand, Norland's descendants didn't hate him, because they knew he was so earnest. They didn't think he lied, but it doesn't mean that they were sure he hadn't made some mistake, or been tricked, or similar. I don't think the focus is on the family as a whole, I think that it's Norland himself who we are supposed to think of here. I think that commenting on a whole family would weaken the theme here a little.

I will say, though, that increased anime budget doesn't automatically equal better storytelling on screen. There's also some criticism of Toei going way overboard with characters buzzing throught the air enveloped by flashing lights as if they were Dragonball characters.

Baron Omatsuri is also a great idea as it chronologically fits best between Skypiea and W7. The movies aren't strictly canon, more of "what if" scenarios. But at least a good half of them is well worth a watch, I think.

True, and I think that's important to remember: one pace doesn't cut where the adaptation is already doing a good job. Though personally I like that they remove the eyecatchers because I find them so annoying a lot of the time. Not always, but sometimes they really break the mood.

I personally love that arc, but the pacing issues are much worse than with even Skypiea. It's also one of the arcs where the animation budget seems to be at its lowest, which is such a shame because the manga art is fantastic. I think one pace does a great job with making it enjoyable in anime form, but I really recommend checking the manga out for it because of how Oda uses a different inking balance to create a certain mood, it's so good.
