Many ppl who aren't familiar ask where the teachers are but everything you see happening is IN BETWEEN CLASSES which is like around 10 mins each (no teachers in the classrooms during these breaks). The students are mostly all in the same classroom throughout the whole day being taught by different teachers per subject, whereas students in America migrate to different classrooms for each class, so you see a lot of them just doing whatever in their classroom in the show. Hope this makes more sense!

45:50 that’s right, jack. the school decided to just sweep it under the rug. the thing with korea is, they're obsessed with image. their society is largely collectivist. maintaining harmony and avoiding public shame is highly valued. if a student causes a scandal, it’s not just “their” problem. it reflects badly on the whole school, the teachers, even the parents. so instead of addressing issues head on, institutions often try to cover them up to protect their image. the same goes for companies and even families. reputation is everything, and people will go to great lengths to save face, even if it means ignoring serious problems behind closed doors. it’s honestly so sad, because victims are often pressured to stay silent or told to resolve things "privately". as if that's possible 😮‍💨. sometimes they're even straight up ignored because the school knows they're not "powerful enough" to do any real damage. i know it's wild🤯. so in this case yeong-bin is just transferred instead of getting a serious punishment for drugging another student because his parents are rich and it doesn't benefit anyone for the scandal to get out. as for si-eun, he didn' get punished because they want him to keep quiet and not ruin the school's reputation.

That's so crazy to me. How messed up. I feel bad for the students in Korea that go through the constant pain of bullying and don't get any justice or protection. They need to implement strict rules and have a policy against it. If I was a kid, I would feel so helpless and scared having no one in my corner... It would get so tiring. Any shred of hope is gone. 😭

so to address the cousin-brother thing. they’re actually cousins. but koreans use this word "hyung," which literally means older brother/big brother. it doesn’t have to be used just for blood relatives. it’s commonly used by younger guys to address someone older who they’re close to. it’s an honorific, but what’s interesting is that it’s not completely formal. it’s casual, but still respectful. It shows closeness while acknowledging age difference. but when they have to address their boss or want to make it extra polite they use "hyung-nim". the suffix -nim emphasizes a high level of respect.

Now that we’re at episode 2, you guys finally get to see more of Si-euns style of fighting. Si-eun is not a trained fighter like the GOAT Su-ho is. That’s why the show is called “Weak Hero” because he doesn’t know how to fight but he’s very brave/confident and he uses his intelligence to his advantage (like assessing his surroundings and planning the perfect outcome to take out his opponent/ using the environment and the things in it to win). That’s why he’s my favorite character because even though he doesn’t have the moves like everyone else, he’s not giving up until one of them goes down & he doesn’t bow down to anyone which i love so much (plus he’s just insane which makes for such an interesting character to me). I love watching him fight because it feels like a real, dirty, street fight. Like here’s some pocket sand, and oops there goes a flower pot to your head and omg now my book bag is hitting you in your rib LOL. Like i love that fight scene so much. I also love the friendship dynamic like that’s another huge part of the weak hero verse that i can’t wait for you guys to get into! Let’s go Sieun & Suho!!!

korean school is pretty different from north america that’s why it’s strange to see things like pillows in the classroom 😭 my best friend is korean and she told me they have a longer school day but more breaks and they also have a self study period. they don’t switch classrooms at all during the day and apparently it’s not uncommon to be at school for 10 hours

I love it when a show actually shows the fight and not have like 10 cuts every second. The fight choreo was great too, very fast paced and technical. And seems like the the actors are actually doing the fight and stunts which is always cool to see. I'm trying my hardest not to binge and watch along but man its so tough, this shit is so good 😭😭

The episode was over too soon :(( I both fear and anticipate every upload lol Love the energy of everyone throwing up the little finger hearts after Su-ho, and the hype of Beom-seok's push 😌 Also the Bron and Eren comparisons are so real - its always funny to me to see the actor who plays a prince in Alchemy of Souls playing the mobster cousin here though, lmao (to clarify, yes, he is the cousin - 'hyung' meaning 'brother' is also just a korean term of familiarity that younger guys use towards their male seniors, even when they're not actually brothers. You see this use of familial terms in a lot of Asian cultures) Also think we've got a bit seeing as we're only 2 episodes into Weak Hero lol, but if we're reccomending other k-dramas, I'd like to throw Extraordinary Attorney Woo, Move to Heaven, Hi Bye Mama, and Kingdom into the mix 🙏🏻🙏🏻 (thats my condensed list anyways...😂)

you guys mentioned how every korean show you've watched so far is gruesome and sad and you're right. but it's because the genres you guys seem to enjoy overlap with these kinds of kdramas, so we tend to recommend you more dark and sad stuff. i will say, korean shows are versatile and you can definitely find many lighter stories to consume! if you guys want more lighthearted shows, i know the gek audience has some recommendations. whenever i watch the darker, sadder stuff (like weak hero), i usually follow up with a romance/comedy kdrama :).

The lettuce wrap is called a ssam and feeding somebody a ssam means you care about them. It is a cute gesture of friendship. Straight guys in Korea seem more comfortable with showing affection through those gestures. Also "hyeon" is how a guy would call another guy with respect because of their older age, therefore translated as "brother". A girl would call the same guy "oppa", and an older girl ("sister") "onni". These words help understand the dynamic between people in Korea.

i will say a lot of these shows involve bullying at least the ones you guys have tuned into because unfortunately in south korea its very real and very bad and a lot of these things arent too far off from real events, money and power is sadly a really big thing there, there’s thousands of cases of really severe bullying especially in school but because of south korea’s laws minors often go unpunished no matter how severe thats why most times they dont care because they know at most they might get 2 years of community service or something

'hyeong' means older brother & guys in korea will use it to call older guys they are close to. they don't have to be related, it's just a term of affection :) also it is quite normal in korea that you have to do 'class duties' after school which can include mopping the classroom floor, why is why some students were cleaning in that one scene

I was rewatching this and I just realized at 1:41 when Suho refers to himself as a guardian angel that was a play on words! Guardian angel in Korean is "suho cheonsa" where suho literally means to guard.

Also, korean music is so good--especially indie korean music. So yes, the intro song is definitely fire. I actually thought the singer was Hyukoh and his band, but I was wrong. Sounds so similar.

i think the romance shows are not reaction worthy for the geks, i cringe sometimes watching them on my own so i don't think it's worth seeing a reaction to. that being said, i do think they're fun watches and can be therapeutic after watching shows like this; if the geks ever feel like properly delving into kdramas, i hope they watch the rom-coms in their own time. on the humour perhaps not translating well: i get what you're saying but i think we should give them some credit. the comedic breaks in the kdramas they've been watching seem to always hit for them, no matter how few and far between they are. i think they'd get the hang of it eventually, like they did with the many versatile anime they've been watching–some of which have VERY unique comedy included.

Thank you, Jack, for pointing out the sound design—it’s so rarely mentioned 🖤 Just here to say I’m obsessed with it. The percussive tension in the action scenes, the sneaky minimalist scores, the subtle psychological cues, the heightened background noise... it's all genius. But one of the boldest choices in WHC1 is knowing when not to use sound—for those “what isn’t said" moments. Top!
