Tokyo Ghoul S1 is definitely a good adaptation of the original work, people rarely complain about season 1 when they say the adaptation ruined the art\ manga. Overall i really enjoyed all seasons and liked the characters/ story so much that i binged the manga as well and yes the manga was a lot better than some episodes but it didn’t take anything from enjoying the anime enough to be rewatching it.

Carter, dont be worried if you cant read action flow in TG. Sui Ishidas action choreography in this series was honestly horrible. And yes this comes from someone who has TG as their top 1 series. Ishida was really bad at it, since it was his first ever serialized work, and to be completely honest, it wont get any better until at least his next serialized work a.k.a Choujin X LMAO. Also yeah. Ishidas TG paneling game is honestly on another level. One of the bests. There are so many pages that are wallpaper material. I also cant wait for you guys to witness one of the craziest art progressions and improvements in the manga game.

Yea my biggest criticism with the series was the action scenes. Sometimes they were easy to follow but the majority of them you had to look at for like 2 minutes just to understand what was happening. It’s weird cause the art is so godly at times but he never could get the fight scenes down.

You have to continue this series. Regarding the reading/watching order, trust me, read the manga first, then watch the anime. The anime eventually becomes worse, but the manga becomes better, so you're better off experiencing the better material first.

season 1 adaptation is very good, what people normally complained about was the next fewer seasons. Also another thing to note is that season 2 is actually a alternate timeline different to the manga that the author wanted for the anime. It was a cool idea at first but many manga readers didn't really like the changes. Plus the later seasons after season 2 follow the manga version of season 2 which just makes it very confusing for anime watchers as alot of the plot is entirely skipped or just randomly tweaked. Also not to mention the anime after season 2 was heavily rushed in terms of direction and animation.

I say you keep reading the chapters first personally. The anime keeps showing things out of order, so it’s better to watch the manga so you have an idea of the storyline. And you’ll need to read the manga first especially in the later seasons as the adaption gets sloppier

I mean the jojo anime is must watch content. David Productions gave Jojo an all time great anime adaptation. The manga is peak for sure but you really don’t need to read it if you watch the anime (nothing major is cut out) UNLIKE Tokyo ghoul. If you’re going to add another manga, it should 100% be Berserk, Kingdom or Ajin (very similar to Tokyo ghoul has a goat tier antagonist and goat tier art but might not be the most popular series)

just finished the full video DO NOT WATCH IT FIRST 😭💔💔. the manga is absolutely the correct way for the story to be consumed. the first season condenses like 60~ chapters into 12 episodes and you will feel it.

please dont watch it first. it will destroy the whole story. the internal struggles, the emotions and the thought-process are the things that really are missing in the anime, which the manga portrays so beautifully. the anime just feels hollow at some point (first season tried their best but after that season, there wont be any depth to the characters because they decided to leave almost anything character related out and just did fight after fight without really connecting the plotpoints.) Watching it first will ruin the first impression and you guys dont want that. i think the "raw" material is just the way to go. And after that the only thing you are looking foward to are the fights

I feel like you guys should experience what its like to leave the best for last, the manga, for the second volume. That way, you will watch the anime not knowing what's gonna happen, then read the manga looking forward to how it all unravels with the addition of more content than in the anime as well as crazy good detailed manga panels that the anime lacks

Carter, there are mangakas that play with the panels and use them for story telling, but I wouldn't say is a norm in every manga but is also not uncommon. Sui Ishida tho, he does it in an amazing way, you guys really pick one of the best mangas to start with. One thing that I don't like about the anime is that it doesn't have any of the internal conflict the characters (rn Kaneki) goes through. That aspect is really important to the story but in the anime is just gone and I know anime prefers "show don't tell" but erasing parts of the story for the sake of it is also not good in my opinion. Even with all that I still think S1 is an ok adaptation, the music and voice acting elevate it for me, but I still prefer the manga even for these 2 episodes.

This. As someone that loved the manga, when I watched the first season, I just couldn't get myself to enjoy it because it was SO fast paced in comparison. The reveal of Nishiki and Hide being "friends" in the manga is way better than in the adaptation 😤

Im spelling it out phonetically. They were saying kAh-neki in the video, in the anime with og japanese voice actors, the way they pronounce it is ka-ne-ki. The difference is in the start. Only reason I mentioned it was so I didn’t have to hear my guys name mispronounced for the whole series.

Yea so I was thinking about how you guys could go about all of the skipping chapters to correspond with the anime episodes and I do just feel like it would be better to read the manga in the order it was written in and then watch season 1 or vice versa (although not recommending that imo) because if you’re reading the manga to find out why it’s so loved and why the anime did a dookie adaptation of it, I think it’s a smidge silly to try to adapt to the anime format when the main complaint in the fandom is that it wasn’t adapted correctly. Maybe it’s fine for season 1 but I’m shaking my head thinking of season 2 and Re lol

i just think that its about the first impression of anything. at the end of the day this is a reaction channel. i want them to react to the masterpiece of a story which only the manga presents. the first reaction will always be better and more genuine than the second so why would anyone want them to start with the „worse“ one?

I noticed you guys struggle with some of the Japanese names, like "Fueguchi", and I don't know if you guys will read this, but in case anybody else wants to know how to pronounce Japanese words/names, I'll try to briefly explain. Just always remember these vowels for pronunciation: "A-I-U-E-O" Funnily, Japan has these vowels but they're kind of like the building blocks of the whole language. The only difference is the order (in US, the order being: "A-E-I-O-U"), and obviously, their pronunciation. This isn't the perfect way to pronounce, but it's the easiest way to teach. And it sounds close enough. A -> あ -> 'Ah' sound I -> い -> 'Ee' sound U -> う -> 'Oo' sound E -> え -> 'Eh' sound O -> お -> 'Oh' sound I could go through and list the whole hiragana/katakana, but that'd be too long lol. Now, in front of the AIUEO kanas, these are all of the possible characters: - easy ones-> k, s, t, n, h, m, y, r :: special ones -> shi, tsu, chi, fu, wa, wo, n - (e.g. 'ka', 'sa', 'ta', 'ha', 'ma', 'ya', 'ra') *If this is confusing, you can literally look-up "hiragana chart" and it'll make more sense. Going back now, the name "Fueguchi" can be separated to "Fu-e-gu-chi" (foo-eh-goo-chee) vs. "Fue-guchi" (foo-goo-chee). "Touka" would be "toh-kah". The 'u' in 'ou' you see is just an extended 'oh' sound; if you ever see 'ei', it's just extended "eh" sound. Sorry for the long explanation 🙏 but I hope this helps somebody (if it even makes sense)

100% agree with you. If they watch first then read, they will be very invested in the anime because they dont know what happens next and they will be engrossed in the manga because they get to see the original expanded version of what happened in the anime. Which means the "i dont know what happens" remains intact in the manga and keep the Geks engage with the story even if they watched the anime first. Another reason to watch first is the background music during major scenes. I feel like the impact is lesser because you know that thats was bound to happen

I agree with what u said Carter, an elite anime adaptation is always going to triumph an elite manga (voice acting, color, animation, music all add soo much). But an elite manga is always better than a mid or even a good anime. Like shibuya was fantastic in the manga but the anime elevated it in every single possible way.

ATTENTION EVERYONE AND Geks!(pls don't read that like im angy 👉👈) Im gonna draw a parallel between The Last of Us and Tokyo Ghoul. So we all know for a fact that the Geks love The Last of Us series, right? A question to the viewers: How much would they love the show if they played the game first then watched the series? Seems like most of the people who played first had sooo much problem with the show AND the cast. On the other hand, the Geks, who watched the show first, didnt have much of a problem with Ellie. Instead, they like her which is far from hating her because she's not the right actress for ellie. When they play The Last of Us in the future, they will have an unforgettable time with the game in addition to having a blast watching the show and rooting for joel and ellie in the show. That's the kind of experience I want them to have with Tokyo Ghoul. To love both the anime and the manga, rather than loving one and hating the other, like what happened with people who played The Last of Us then watched the series. At the end of the day, what the Geks want is to have an amazing experience. And i know for a fact that they will have exactly that when they play The Last of Us because they watched it first than the other way around.

I hear what you’re saying. I’m an anime only and I watched this yeaaaaaars ago and then rewatched with my bf to show him, about 4/5 years ago. Soooo it’s definitely been a minute haha. But even I liked season 1 more than 2, BUT I enjoyed it over all. And would happily rewatch it. I never read the manga. Just didn’t idk. I’ve only gotten into manga the last 3 years or so. But hearing how great of a manga it is. I’m definitely interested in reading it. I think it would be great to enjoy something and then get to enjoy the source material EVEN MORE afterwards without having to think of the anime in a negative light, in this particular case.

Tokyo Ghoul was the first anime I finished, then read the manga then bought both box sets (Tokyo Ghoul and re) have never re-watched the anime since but have re-read the manga multiple times, I think I’m mostly interested in the GEK boys reactions about the differences. But I saw the notif for this episode and have not been more excited about anything in the last few years, so I can’t wait for the next one

I feel the thoughts on manga and anime Tokyo Ghouls’ manga art is genuinely amazing, there’s just so much detail in the art that must be a monumental task to attempt to animate. Seeing more inner dialogue and stuff is cool. Anime is dope. Getting music, voices, and everything else that brings it to life is great. It also helps with some of that confusion, especially during action sequences Totally understandable why people tend to be partial to whatever they consume first. Things get complicated when an adaptation diverts from the source material. But it’s cool to see you guys experience/appreciate all the differences in such a direct way.

For some reason, the second season is a rushed anime original and tells a completely different story. And in general a lot of the details, nuance and arcs were skipped entirely. By the time it tried to follow the manga again in season 3, none of the narrative was cohesive anymore. It's definitely a strange adaption

Also overall the Tokyo ghoul manga is far better, unfortunately the anime has had a lot of adaptation issues and doesn’t fully stay true to the source material either. Season 1 isn’t too bad but basically everything after is a little problematic lol, it makes more sense to read the manga then treat the anime as a separate experience if you’re still interested in my opinion, especially after season 1

Yeah but I also think that's one of the major improvements ishida makes throughout the years. Towards the end the paneling and action is much clearer than towards the beginning. I think it's bc it's his first manga like that that hes still got a lot of flaws when it comes to action

Think about 99% of the fandom, basically everyone experienced Tokyo ghoul thru its anime first and then switched to the manga (if they even bothered to read). I think it would be a nice change of pace for them to read it first and then see how the anime adapted it.

I really enjoyed the manga vs anime discussion at the end. I haven't read JJK fully but I genuinely think that anime adaptation if Shibuya arc was one of the best I've evere seen. I was so scared that it wouldn't live up to the expectations but as whole season 2 of JJK did a PERFECT job of conveying the vibes of the arc. The Mahogara vs Sukuna fight was a blur when I read manga and anime adaptation did what it was supposed to do with it's bright visuals. Generally, MAPPA are known for staying really faithful to the source material which I appreciate. I'd also like to add that the time between reading the manga and watching the anime adaptation matters too. Since you guys are doing everything back to back immediately you notice tyhe smallest differences quicker and feel the contrast ofshift in one. But in reality many people take some time between reading and watching the anime. On one hand the bigger that time is the less you're likely to remmeber small details but at the same time the long wait for anime adaptation may build too much hype and expectations. It's an interesting dynamic. When it comes to the other shows you've watched, while not bad at all, I've heard that Naruto's manga is way better than anime adaptation solely for the lack of fillers and a better Sakura writing. I think Carter would enjoy Naruto more if he were to read manga one day, since it's the most consise version of the show. No long flashbacks, etc. Haikyuu's adaptation is pretty good but with the movie it is already know to leave out some important details out. Though, I have to admit as a once Haikyuu manga reader I barely understood the match progression. If you think fights are difficult to understand, then you've never read a Haikyuu match ;) Death not and FMAB, from what I know, are pretty good adaptations that didn't leave much out and just enhanced the already existing shows. Code Geass of course didn't have any source material. Now that you guys are reading the manga, you probably understand more why it's such a crazy thing to create an anime from scratch and reach high levels of quality. P.S. I'm curious what you guys would think about AOT's manga because it DOES have some details (like the conversation between Historia and Levi abouther becoming the Queen) in manga compared to anime adaptation. Maybe now you would be more interested in the videos that compare anime and manga. You should probably watch one for AOT if you don't want to read the manga fully)))

I'm liking this cause the Geks get to appreciate beautifully drawn manga panels that the author is putting effort into! Mangas are most of the time more detailed than animes for obvious reasons, and looots of mangakas put so much effort in their drawings. I know One Punch Man is a very good example (however for this one it's not the author himself who draws it, but an illustrator), they'd lose it if they saw some of the drawings.

I think you might like better watching the anime first. As someone who watched the anime only I feel like reading the manga just now with you guys made my experience better as its made it easier to understand the manga while also expanding on the anime in information and world building. whereas in current order, reading the manga and then watching the anime makes you get a feeling of missing out on a lot of stuff that you know happened in the manga and isn't shown, which hinders your experience of the anime. all in all, I think it'll make your entire Tokyo Ghoul experience much more pleasent.

david production are the only studio capable of adapting jojo but even so, they couldn’t match the artistic level araki reached by the time he started working on part 7. since it was the first part to switch to monthly instead of weekly so he had plenty of time to cook on his chapters. the character designs for the anime are out and you can already see how much they simplified the designs to make it easier to animate. still excited for it to see the voice actors and the music and the openings and what not. but the art in that manga bro….🤌

For sure, I get that S1 is the best out of the bunch but even it cuts out so much. Between EP 9-12 it cuts out an entire 16 chapter arc from the manga. That's one more chapter than the Hidden Inventory arc from JJK S2. Imagine if JJK S2 never adapted that arc, which quite a few people prefer over the Shibuya Incident arc. I just can't agree with the people here that say S1 is great for reasons like that. It's far from the worst adaptation I've seen in an anime, especially compared to the rest of TG, but boy does it leave a lot to be desired imo.

What you're saying is true, but as per your comparison, once I switched to the patreon I stopped watching on youtube. In this case the geks want to read the manga with the anime, and from the first 2 episodes you can see disappointment from the anime. I think that switching the order might help with that disappointment but i guess thats subjective to each person

It also has a great view to like ratio as well at 4.5k likes. The Naruto vs Pain upload for instance only has 200 more likes and the AOT finale actually has 200 less likes. Both of those have more than 90k views so Tokyo Ghoul is really punching above its weight class there.

I've only watched the censored version we got while it was airing, and it is off-putting. There were a lot of things censored, not only obvious scenes like the one with Nishio in this episode, but things like knives were censored, they used blurry, obscure a scene, contrast colors or directly just a flash of white/black light across the whole scene and sometimes you couldn't even see what was happening, that definitely didn't help with its popularity

It’s a refreshing format i really like it ! I do have a few suggestions though: - You may not realize it but you all read in a much lower voice than your usual speaking voice. I had to crank up the volume on my TV, and anytime you get excited it just screams reaaaaally loud in the room. You could find a way to boost low dB and reduce high dB inputs either directly with the microphone settings or in your editing software. - You guys are good readers but clearly not on a voice actor level. I’m not saying you should become ones, but for targeting a new audience on Youtube it would help if you gave a small glimpse of immersion to the listener. It could be in the form of training yourselves by making movies voiceover on stream or something. Anyway, it really is a promising format, with little tweaks it could become more user-friendly.

I am actually curious as to why you guys stopped doing reactions to this. Not being critical, just curious. Tokyo Ghoul is definitely more mature in its themes for sure, but it's rated one of the top manga books for the psychological aspect. I think a lot of your fanbase including myself would love to see you guys bring it back and I can almost bank on your fanbase going up (along with your likes and comments). As I have said in other comments, I respect you guys a lot, but I would really enjoy seeing at the very minimum you guys finish out where the manga and season 1 ends.
