2:12 Saber can't dematerialize, and there's a reason for that

Oscar Medina

"Train his son to be the greatest hero" Kiritsugu: "nah, I'll train him wrong on purpose."

Oscar Medina

Too be fair the reason is too convoluted to explain fully in the anime.

DontFailArtSchoolEren

I really like the pacing in this and the quick fleeting moments of peace and humor.

i like ubw for the most part i think its a major down grade from fate zero character, dialogue and writing wise. mostly I just dont like shiro as a character he is so consistently dumb as a rock and his character is so flat imo but the Fights in ubw definitely are some of the best ufotable has ever done I do think its kind of weird how nerfed the noble spirits are in ubw versus fate zero and almost every other fate I guess because it was the first one and they ended up giving the heroic spirits way higher power levels in other series

FR33 APPL3S

the light lines of mana you see on Rins legs are her just using fortifying magic on her self while Shiro uses it on other objects

Synyster

I love how there will be just casual convo and then suddenly Ufotable just drops the sickest animation outta nowhere. So freaking peak!

I am pretty sure the anime skips over the concept of Magic Crests, though Rin touched on the general idea. Basically, all you need to know is that mages can store the spells they've learned in life in these Crests, then pass them on, usually to their children. It's essentially the accumulation of their life's work, but not only that, if you have the Crest you can use any spell it contains without having to learn it. These Crests get more and more complex as generations pass, because mages' children add on to these Crests and then pass them down to their children. About the confusion on Rin's seemingly "bipolar" behavior, it's not really too hard to understand why she acts the way she does. I'm not going to explicitly explain the reason why Rin cared about Shirou in the first place (although it should be easy enough to deduce from the information we're given between Zero and UBW so far), but obviously their bond has grown through the experiences they've shared up to this point. However, you gotta take into account that the Grail War is a life-and-death situation, and from Rin's perspective, she's pissed that Shirou isn't fully understanding the magnitude of what's happening by constantly putting himself in dangerous situations. It's essentially a spit in the face if you think about it, given Shirou seems to have zero regard for the life Rin saved in the first episode. At the same time, she also does feel like she owes him, and in this episode, Shirou saved her life again, hence the switch up after their fight. Yet another conflicting motivation comes from her desire to win the Grail War (and I'm sure some of that comes from the loss of her father); logically it is true that Shirou presents himself as such an easy target, and taking Saber out of the race would be advantageous. So underneath the surface, Rin is actually a pretty complex character, which might make it seem like her actions are confusing if you don't look carefully enough. Also, when Rin says Kiritsugu wasn't a mage, she wasn't really trying to insult him, but more stating it how it was. There's a strict idea of what a traditional mage is, which she touched on in that conversation; we would consider them rats, and they are, but because the way they think is fundamentally different. Archer speaks on this mindset at the beginning of episode 6. Everything about the way Kiritsugu raised Shirou was irregular compared to the way mages typically raise their children, the big one being that he chose not to educate him much on magecraft and the mage world. She was saying Kiritsugu prioritized being a proper father over being a mage. Obviously Kiritsugu was a mage from a literal point of view, but he didn't carry the same mindset as them. Edit: On Zero -> stay night vs. stay night -> Zero, I can still confidently say the latter is the superior experience. Having the information from Zero is actually a net negative because it will severely reduce/completely remove the impact of many of the major twists. Basic stuff about the Grail War, Masters, and other stuff is presented in a more digestible format in stay night, whereas Zero throws you right into the mix of things and kinda overloads you if you don't already know what's going on (remember how you guys felt when watching Zero's first scene?). However, there are merits to watching Zero beforehand, which is why I wouldn't go as far to say that Zero before stay night ruins the experience.

rheed_

It's a problem with the stay night anime adaptations in general not with the actual source material, Shirou is extremely fleshed out in the VN. Problem is that certain parts are skipped/rushed and almost all of the inner monologue is cut out so it's bound to end up that way. Even so, to say that Shirou is "dumb as a rock" and that his character is flat is so reductive it's not even funny; there are clear reasons for the way he acts and I think even anime Shirou is relatively complex as a character.

WITCH_of_AKASHA

Yea you definitely didn’t read the Vn of Fsn if your calling ubw dialogue and writing a down grade to Fz. Also what just compare just Ubw to zero? You do realize that Ubw is incomplete without the other two routes right? Part of what makes Ubw good is because the fate route exists, and part of what makes Heaven feel good is because Ubw exists! Put them together and you get a masterpiece of a story! Each route explore Shirou’s idealism and his monologue. which make his character entertaining! And if you don’t get that then you obviously don’t understand his character. But I do understand what you’re saying. The adaptation to the stay night series aren’t great at all especially Heaven feels! So I can understand why you think Zero is the better series.

DontFailArtSchoolEren

only zero felt like it was written by Shakespeare as they put it but it was mostly adults talking in that show while ubw and heavens feel is with younger masters.

zoldaic

I like how you guys liking Shirou

Izaya

Rin could have killed him in his sleep multiple times since episode 0. She gave him multiple chances and warned him that their truce is over, why is Jack shook that she was attacking him? and another thing, since its not clear from Fate Zero. The moment the normal world gets involved in Grail War buiseness they need to stop. When Caster started messing witht he CIty in Zero it was immediate truce between masters. If a normal human got involved protecting the secret of the Grail War is more important.

Izaya

Its such a shame that Jack seems to not understand the story at all and forgot all he learned in Fate Zero. His comments make 0 sense considering the lore of the show. Even Mckay Special-effects-for-brains is getting it more then Jack. Come on Jack step up your game bro😭😭 where did Prime Jack go? "What if he wished for the Grail war to cease existing?" jack asked. Though it was most LITERALLY what Kiritsugu asked when he got the Grail. To end all wars

ethan tanner

another thing that bothered me an yes I know its an anime but like why do rin and shirou still go to school in the middle of a life and death royal especially since they seem very motivated not to include outsiders like shiro I could understand he seems kind of dense and not really understanding the gravity of what a holy grail war is but Rin should definitely understand how dangerous that is and even with shinji up until now it doesnt make sense to me to draw his mana from somewhere he is going to frequent like it would make more sense for him to do something closer to caster's plan of taking mana from alot of people all over the city and not shitting where he eats it wouldnt even make sense that they are trying to keep a low profile either since the grail always chooses 3 masters from the 3 major houses I guess it just how the original game was structured that made it so there was a highschool portion to open up more romance options idc though it doesnt make sense to me

Give them time bro, not everyone is locking into every detail when they watch anime. Sometimes it's about casually enjoying the content and piecing it together at your own pace. Not everyone is going to retain every detail, they are doing a great job considering they are watching and posting so many different types of anime at once.

Oromis

I guess you guys must have forgot or maybe just didn't quite understand it since it was so early in fate zero, but magic crests and mage families are the very core of mage society in Fate. It was explained in the lecture from El-Melloi that Waver attended at the very start. Basically because no single person can unravel all the mysteries of magic/the world in one lifetime, mage families pass on all their accumulated knowledge through magic crests to the heir of each family. Like Rin said in these episodes, she is able to cast any spell her family has discovered in their history simply by channeling mana into it. Because of this, mage families and traditions are so important, and generally the older a family the more powerful they are. Waver was mocked by El-Melloi because he was only a 3rd generation mage, meaning he is basically a complete beginner. Also a lil side note, the reason Rin always has a gem with her for stuff, is because her family is specialized in jewel magecraft, just like the Matous specialize in absorption(shown through crest worms and other insects), and the Einzberns specialize in alchemy(which is shown in their ability to create humonculi through Alchemy).

Isabel

I 1000% agree Stay Night UBW is way more digestible than Zero. Zero throws you in and you really have to trust the process when watching. Stay Night takes the time to explain master/servant dynamics, command seals, and more just within the first several episodes.

Isabel

I wouldn't go as far to say he's "dumb as a rock," a lot of his actions make sense within the context of Kiritsugu's influence, as well as being thrown into a magical war out of nowhere which he has no prior knowledge of. He can be a bit too calm in seemingly intense, life or death situations. That's probably where the "he's dumb" feeling comes from lol

ethan tanner

I mean he was like so rin you are trying to kill me? After she told him like 3 times and started shooting lethal spells at him and that's after he basically almost died twice from archer and Lancer he's a little slow to get with the program I'd call that dumb

Jack

Holy, chill on me. I forgot he asked to “end all wars,” it was a freaking joke of a comment because obviously the grail wouldn’t do that

McKay Carter

Feel free to criticize but making fun of my brain is certainly a choice

Jack

Because every other time she has saved his life and then suddenly goes after him when Saber isn’t around, but again he shows her his good side, saves her life and she then makes a truce with him. She’s struggling to push against her nature that according to people like Kirei you should kill the other masters because it’s the quickest most efficient way to win the grail war, she’s pushing against her nature because Shirou is challenging it as an outsider and helping her to see that there are other options besides that. Just like she said too, Shirou’s father was a father first and a mage second, she has different values and he is showing her a different way that challenges her beliefs. It seems that she truly doesn’t want to kill him, as she has had multiple chances and didn’t actually follow through with it.

Linus Pettersson

Yes, they were talking about Kiritsugu in Rin's house. It wasnt really mentioned but he passed away right after he said his final line when talking with shirou in that scene of them together. like they said in the episode Kiritsugu didn't really want Shirou to be involved in the mage business and only taught him a little, and always told him to quit if he wanted, to Rin that is absurd considering her mage upbringing, that Kiritsugu was a father instead of a mage to Shirou, she probably envies that, Kiritsugu really is a goat. And the blonde guy you mention has already been revealed to be Gilgamesh when he showed up in the church and talked with Kirei in episode 3. Also the magic Rin used on her leg was also strenghtening or fortification magic, the same one Shirou uses, you said it looked like Shirous magic because it is, she just used it on her leg that one time unlike Shirou, because the way shirou does it is a bit different, how he visualize the components and stuff.

Chinese Cartoons

Zero is literally written assuming you already know the ins and outs of how Fate works. It's a prequel - it was designed that you know the original story. That's why is just dumps a boatload of shit on you in episode 1 and then moves on lol, it's supposed to just be a refresher, not an actual introduction.

rheed_

Chinese Cartoons, I was already aware of that and didn't say anything otherwise - I think you're missing my point (unless you were just trying to add on some additional context)!

Chinese Cartoons

Zero suffers from the fact that literally no human being speaks like that ever. Urobuchi is a great ideas man but his characters simply do not act like people, they are all just walking ideals that have one defining character trait and talk about it constantly - it's how almost all of his characters are. I get why some people like it, but it's never jived with me. It's why his best works are his least human ones.

Jack

Bruhhhh no way he’s dead

ethan tanner

Fair point not many people drop a whole soliloquy in casual conversation it works better in zero for me atleast for the heroic spirits because it makes them seem archaic in a good way

Linus Pettersson

Yes, he did due to the curse of the grail we saw in Fate/Zero, that grail mud/muck. If you remember he saw Irisviel as the 'will of the grail' and when he was killing it she also said "I curse you Kiritsugu Emiya... Angra Mainyu curses you.. suffer... lament until the day you die" (that name isnt really important for now.) so at the age of 34, five years after the Fourth Holy Grail War, due to the curse inflicted by the grail his body began to deteriorate, leaving him with failing sight, weak limbs, and the inability to use magecraft. He spent his final moments with Shirou, watching the moon and reflecting on his desire to be a hero of justice and could be at peace when he heard Shirou say he was going to be one for him instead. In the visual novel Shirou noticed that Kiritsugu didn't wake up after he said "I'm relieved" or "I can be at peace now" one of the two, and Shirou just cried, it was really sad

Linus Pettersson

From the visual novel: "Yeah------I'm relieved." He quietly closed his eyes and his life ended........ Since he looked so peaceful, I thought he would wake up again in the morning, so I didn't disturb him. Perhaps being used to seeing death factored in too. Without doing anything, I just looked up at the man who was my father, as he entered a long sleep. There were no sounds of insects in the garden as it was silent. In the bright night, I remember only my eyes being hot. I did not cry out nor did I feel sad. But I could not stop my tears until the moon sunk.

kuza

no need to tweak

Animeke

I love the character dynamics in UBW. I think one big difference from Fate/Zero is that they're more complex. And I'm anticipating Cannon's and McKay's 180° opinion flip with Saber.

Animeke

I'm very happy that you guys feel satisfied with watching Fate/Zero first! It's a very contentious debate on whether you should start with it or UBW. My whole argument with this watch order has always been world building. You learn so much more about the intricacies & lore of the Holy Grail War, master/servant connections, and the motivations of mages from Zero.

Jack

I feel like starting with UBW just puts you off on the wrong foot, Zero explains so much more and gets so much deeper. I get that it may be hard to understand but it fleshes out the world more

Jack

😭

Jack

She definitely envies and is swayed by Shirou’s pov on things, it seems like she is beginning to change or at least have her views be challenged my him

kuza

yeah i started with ubw on my fate watch, and trust me starting with zero was wayyyyy better, and also for future scenes/characters watching zero first will make those moments hit way harder

Jude

Starting with fate zero helped me appreciate the characters in UBW as well. Like we have so much more history and context with characters like Kirei and Kiritsugu after watching fate zero.

py

This was the anime that got me really into anime years back!! So glad you guys are watching this

Garreth

Fate zero was very convoluted for a person if it's their entry point and impossible for people to remember everything from it when going into UBW. Plus these guys are watching many other shows and movies, so your criticism is unwarranted. There is a way to do it respectfully and you chose to do it very rudely.

Cannon Andrus

Wait that’s so epic. I definitely need a rewatch with a better understanding

Umineko peak fiction

just say you didnt understand shirou char. UBW + Heavens feel makes him a better written char then any Fate zero char

Daniel Ramirez

your supposed to watch fate s/n 06 first not UBW nor Zero

Beeg

The real answer is we need a real fate route adaptation

Beeg

Yeah, I actually really enjoy Shirou's character after watching UBW. When I first watched the original fate anime I also thought shirou was dumb as a rock but it goes much deeper than that. [MAJOR SPOILERS] We learn that he's the way he is because he's the textbook example of survivor's guilt. After that's revealed it's easy to see that while yes - he makes reckless decisions, but it's not just pure stupidity. It's not that he lacks the foresight or doesn't understand the repercussions of his actions, but he just wants to achieve his one dream even if it leads him down a path of self-destruction. This is why UBW is also my favourite route, because it's the only route where Shirou never actually changed from his ideals.

Demerit

Assassin Sasaki the savior of france has finally apearedddd : D

ThatJakeChap

I can see it both ways but I definitely think watching UBW first makes the Zero watch soooo much better. Zero answers alot of questions about UBW that there is almost nothing to really learn when you watch it second. Plus it's fairly easy to pick up all the premise you need to know for UBW in the series itself. But watching UBW first ends with you having some really interesting things you want to know and watching them slowly be revealed in Zero is extremely satisfying. That being said, I guess technically I watched 06 Fate Stay Night then UBW then Zero, although the watch between 06 and UBW was so far apart I'd pretty much forgot everything.
