fateeeeeeeeeeeeee

Herber

I wait for this !!!!

lololol

LEZGOOOO

lololol

the synchronized reaction at 5:54 is frying me 🤣

Some people say to watch stay night first, because Zero spoils a lot of twists that happen in the main routes. For example, the reveal that Sakura and Rin are sisters, reveal that Kiritsugu and Kirei were in the previous grail war, Kirei kills Rin’s dad, who is this Gilgamesh guy? And some more…

James L

LOL "Gilgamesh has just been shopping this entire season"

joursh

fate drop is always peak

Meruuke

I don't think anyone should watch UBW before Zero! The order would be: 1. Fate Stay Night (optional) 2. Fate Zero 3. Unlimited Blade Works (remake of fate stay night) Watching UBW first is doing things backwards Also Archer is the better class XD

Kiwi

They watched zero already its on juicy tier

Zess

I wrote a long comment on what the Root is for Fate on your first zero reaction, but then immediately deleted it when I couldn't quite remember if the show ever explains it lol it might be a more deep cut lore thing. I know I learned about it from exploring the wiki, which gets pretty crazy. If we get to the end without an explanation, I will explain what the Root means.

Frizen

What is with the Fujimura hate? It seems so random she must remind you of someone you guys know in real life LMAO 🤣

Jude

a counter argument to that is that knowing the context from zero makes for a better watching of UBW since you understand more. Like would the boys be so invested in characters like Kiritsugu, Kirei, and Gilgamesh without having watched zero? Without watching zero first I don't think people would care as much for these seemingly low screen time minor characters but having watched zero you know their importance to the story. Using Kiritsugu as an example without the context of zero the viewer would just think oh he's Shirou's adoptive dad that was a ok mage. With the context of zero we would know that Kiritsugu was a very experienced mage killer and one of the final contenders of the previous war, had a connection with saber with their views contrasting, and that his daughter illya is now also a contender of this war. Watching zero first just adds so much more depth. Not to mention how Kiritsugu's dream of peace and being a hero that saves others directly parallels and adds more weight to shirou's dream of being a champion of justice. I just used Kiritsugu as an example but you can apply the same to Kirei and Gilgamesh. I guess it differs between people but I'd personally like getting so much more context and character depth having watched zero first than to get twists from watching UBW first.

kuza

im greedy for more

s2 COOK

kuza

cant wait to hear actual final thoughts when s2 finishes

Den Wolf

Your counter argument is also a bit irrelevant, because the same thing happens when you watch stay night first and then go watch fate zero. That was my experience and it made zero way more enjoyable while the mystery of stay night also made it great.

zoldaic

my fav Saber's face reaction in this ep

Animeke

Prepare yourselves for season 2, it's going to be glorious!

Jude

not sure as to how its irrelevant. yes the twists would be a great reveal going UBW first but if you go straight into UBW with no context from zero you have zero investment into really well established characters allowing for greater depth of story. Going zero before UBW gives so much character development to characters that seem so minor in UBW. Watching UBW first then zero you obviously know that gilgamesh, kirei, and kiritsugu are the ones that make it out of the previous grail war and that heavily diminishes the stakes of fate zero because you know who at least makes it to the end. So other than what I've previously said that's another reason to watch UBW after zero. I don't doubt you enjoyed going UBW first then zero its like when people argue which trilogy to watch in star wars first it's all up to preference but I do think the context, character depth and the way it doesn't spoil who makes it out of the previous war gives the slight edge in watching zero first then ubw.

rheed_

The Root isn't explained in the anime, from what I remember the VN actually doesn't really dive into it either? So yeah, could be helpful for the Geks to get an explanation.

rheed_

W drop, excited for the next batch! 54:52 It's a little complicated, but yeah there's only one Assassin. All you guys need to know for now. 58:48 There were always two Grails. It's interesting because in this case the Japanese is more vague in its wording, the subtitles just decided to make the direct reference to the Greater and Lesser Grails (which I don't necessarily agree with). This concept is more relevant in HF (and was relevant in Zero) so I'll refrain from any explanation though. 1:06:27 I've been fighting for stay night before Zero in all these episodes so it makes me kinda sad to hear this 😭 but to sum it up the main arguments are 1) the stay night source material was released before the Zero source material, and you are intended to come into Zero with knowledge from stay night. It's like the last three Star Wars episodes coming out before the first three. 2) watching Zero first eliminates any surprise from stay night's biggest twists. This is big because while Zero is already strong enough as a standalone anime, the stay night anime adaptations don't include enough of the inner monologue to fully flesh out its characters/world (although it is better than I remember it tbf), so it relies on the animation and the plot twists to carry it, in a sense. So by watching Zero first you basically eliminate a big part of what makes the stay night anime adaptations hit. Of course, UBW/HF before Zero isn't perfect because there is no expository Fate route anime to build off of, so I guess I can somewhat understand why you guys don't see the vision. With that being said, S2 has more big moments so looking forward to seeing the reactions!

rheed_

Jude, the whole point is that you're not supposed to care about them *yet.* You're supposed to care about Shirou, Rin, and Archer first and foremost because they are the protagonists of the UBW route. When you read the Fate route of the VN, Kirei for example is pretty irrelevant until near the end of the route, then the other routes continue to expand and build on his character. Obviously they don't do the deep dive on him like Zero does, but the entire point is that this story is not Kirei's story. You're comparing a show where Kirei is the deuteragonist to one where he's an antagonist, and not even the primary one in UBW for that matter. Not knowing about Kiritsugu, Kirei, and Gil beforehand doesn't actually take anything away from stay night because that's how it was intended to be experienced.

Animeke

(Non-spoiler) I wanted to explain some things in relation to Saber making the Kiritsugu connection because I think you guys are missing out on some context. Most importantly, Fate/Zero was not intended to be watched before UBW, so the Saber/Kiritsugu connection is written subtly in the material UBW was adapted from. (I will always suggest watching Fate/Zero first though, for many reasons, and I'm glad you guys did). Basically, Saber has known since episode 1 when Shirou told her his family name (Emiya). But, what we know that Saber doesn't know is that Kiritsugu changed drastically since her time being with him during Fate/Zero. We've seen several times now the occassional reactions/intrigue Saber gives whenever Kiritsugu is mentioned or characterized by Shirou and Fuji-nee as Saber's gradually realizing this. The most important moment is from episode 1 when Shirou first introduces himself as "Emiya Shirou" - Saber has a reaction to it and exclaims "Emiya..."; and shortly after, Shirou complains to Saber about calling him Master, so she ends up deciding to call him "Shirou" in which she thoughtfully remarks: "Yes. I much prefer the way that sounds". (Also, in Japan, you don't typically call newly met people by their first name, this is a subtlety missed from cultural differences).

It's me

UBW isn't a remake of fate stay night, it is different, same story but different choices since it is based of a game. the 3 part movie is the same story but different choices of whatever ur character(shirou) makes, I won't spoil but I think this I in this one gilgamesh killed or made a deal with sakura to get rid of the grandfather/bug infested room(not a spoiler since they kind of skipped it). we know he met sakura and then was in the underground while using shinji to get into the house(this is all a theory from me not sure if this how it happens)

Oscar Medina

Yeah, Saber is just being considerate to Shirou because he doesn't know the old Kiritsugu.

Oscar Medina

The way I explain to people is that the Greater Grail is the hole of heaven and the lesser Grail is the cup

Izaya

Kiritsugu's name was mentioned half a dozen times already in saber's presence....

Beeg

if you think about it Kiritsugu, Kirei, and Gilga has just been chilling in the same city for 10 years lol. There's a high chance Gilga's just been crashing at Kirei's place Kinda funny to imagine

Sheru

Yeah I aint vibin with this nearly as much as Fate/Zero. Its the typical Anime problem where regardless of grandiose ideas and plotlines, its somehow centered on High schoolers. Action goes hard asfk tho. Every time there's a fight, its a goddamn delight.

McKay Carter

You both are making good points

Oromis

Ye she basically just doesn't want to ruin Shirou's view of his father and the man he strived to be like. It would just be a quick way to piss him off most likely, I think Shirou would be extremely upset if someone came up and trashed his memories of Kiritsugu.

Oromis

I'm curious, not meant as critique/hate, but is Greek mythology just not a subject you get in high school in the USA? I guess I could understand why but I just never thought of it and always assumed everyone knows the stories of Jason and the Argonauts, Orpheus and Eurydice, Heracles' 12 labors, the Trojan War, Pandora's box, etc etc. considering how integral the Greek were to the development of statecraft(particularly democracy) and general philosophy worldwide. These myths were basically how the Greek taught/inspired people to be better and are still applicable even today. Fate kinda just assumes people know who these characters are a lot of the time and won't elaborate too much on their backstory except for some brief flashes. It came up with fate zero as well when they namedropped bluebeard/Giles de Rais, but not knowing a somewhat obscure character from french history is to be expected. Even though he was part of high school education I also couldn't instantly place the name when I first watched fate zero.

Oromis

I'm so hyped for episodes 14+15, hope we can get them together but looking forward to the reactions either way.

Jude

Not sure about the USA but in Canada at least where I'm from Greek mythology was never really part of standard curriculum which is unfortunate because it's very interesting. Most knowledge I got was from movies and other media like Percy Jackson.

Linus Pettersson

Servants lose mana from their wounds and heal it with mana, most can't completely heal their wounds instantly so the masters help is really beneficial. But all of this also depends on the servant.

Linus Pettersson

And I guess we only got 2 eps because 12 was a double lenght ep

Chayanne Acosta

I think they did it correctly because I watched them in the order they came out as they came out and I honestly wish they would’ve released Zero first because it would have made everything else afterwards makes more sense. It’s still kinda confusing none the less though but if you play the Fate game you’ll get a much better understanding of everything that can’t be talked about right now because of spoilers

Zess

Do you mean zero? This is Stay/Night Unlimited Blade Works. Stay/Night are the 3 paths of the original story.

Sheru

My bad, yes I meant Zero.

Animeke

Yes, and it's also a good point to stop for the start of season 2.

Huxley Bennett

Maybe I’m not remembering enough of zero, but I definitely think the major plot twists of ubw/heavens feel are very separate to what we learn in zero

rheed_

Chayanne Acosta If you have played the VN first I’m not really sure what could be confusing. Unless by “Fate game” you’re referring to FGO which is kind of irrelevant here.

rheed_

Huxley Bennett Many twists in UBW/HF are things taken as prior knowledge in Zero. For example, Gilgamesh’s powers, the revealing of Kirei’s true nature, and Sakura and Rin’s relationship as well as the fact that Sakura has any sort of connection to the world of magecraft are all things the reader/viewer is supposed to be unaware of entering stay night.

Cryptcat

whats ur problem with highschoolers💔💔 on a real not i get ur complaint but them being the kids of the major clans ofc theyre gonna be young

Sheru

Its not exactly their age thats the problem, it's the fact that the plotline is around a high school life that bugs me. It just a little unserious? I guess? Considering the very dark reality of this fantasy world we saw in Zero. Not saying I dont enjoy my light hearted anime, its just that the world we saw in Zero, with the type of wholesome cutsy touch they put in this one here there is jarring.

Isabel

I'm from Eastern Europe but raised in the US and although referenced here and there, mythology specifically Greek isn't taught in depth. Perhaps only The Iliad and The Odyssey, along with some mention of the stories of Sisyphus and King Midas are common. I'd say a lot of characters from Fate aren't even Greek mythology, King Arthur/Saber, Cú Chulainn/Lancer, and Gilgamesh are based on English, Irish, and Sumerian legends. Hercules and Medea might be the only exception in UBW being Roman/Greek.

Isabel

I can understand this criticism and felt similar when watching after Zero. I think season two really starts to give off that grittiness that you may be missing from Zero though. My only complaint personally was the amount of fan service in UBW compared to Zero, I don't mind some but there's some scenes in season two that I think could've been omitted personally 😅

Oromis

Ye a lot of it is European and Asian mythology as well, but like I said with regards to bluebeard, I kinda expected Greek mythology to be more well known than the others(except King Arthur), since it is a high school subject for most people in my experience but I guess that isn't the case everywhere. Like it didn't surprise me when they didn't get any of the Ushiwakamaru/Benkei jokes in Haikuuu since I wouldn't expect anyone outside of Asia to get those references, but for Japanese viewers those names and their legends are common knowledge. I always just find it interesting when I find out that something I thought was known by everyone is actually more localized than I thought. I think for fate it helps to sometimes watch a few minute YouTube mythology video on a servant if you've never heard the name before. As long as you watch a history/mythology focused video and not an actual Fate character video since that will just spoil it. A lot of fate writing is almost a commentary on popular myths and their idealogical message, so without a rough idea of who these characters are you miss quite a lot. But there is no wrong way to enjoy a show.

Isabel

For sure, I wish we got taught more about mythologies in school, but maybe I just say that with hindsight since I enjoy that topic now. I am definitely with you on researching the characters though, I was really into Lancer's backstory so it was a fun read after watching him in UBW :))

Oromis

Yeah, it often also explains why certain heroes are so strong. The Epic of Gilgamesh for example is considered the oldest known piece of Heroic Literature, so it makes sense that among heroic servants he would be a special case. I particularly liked Zero Lancer's legend since it adds so much context to all his interactions with Kayneth and Sola-Ui. Fate is one of those shows that often takes the "show, don't tell" approach and sometimes without historical/mythological context you're just left wondering why they show a character giving a certain look in certain situations. But that also adds tons of rewatch value. And then with all the multi verse, multiple timeline stuff in Fate as well, it really just has so much information to dive into, but also can make it very hard to understand for newer fans. I remember watching Garden of Sinners(~9 movies also made by Ufotable from the fate verse) and being blown away by how much context it provides to the magic systems and world. I'm glad Ufotable has been making Demon Slayer these past few years but I hope they do go back to their roots and continue making more Fate/Nasuverse since there is so much to adapt and their adaptations stand head and shoulders above the others.

Jack

I know me, McKay and Carter all took a class in Middle school about Greek mythology but no it’s not part of the standard curriculum.

Oromis

Interesting, thanks for the reply. Maybe you guys remember Jason and the Argonauts, and particularly their quest to retrieve the Golden Fleece, which could be found in Colchis. Princess of Colchis refers to that story.

Umineko peak fiction

Heavens Feel is way darker my man. Youll def like it more then zero when they watch the trilogy after. W Nier PFP
