this episode is straight-up a horror movie. Seeing Luffy like this is probably the most heartbreaking thing ever 'cause it's the total opposite of his happy self. Like please I don't wanna watch him suffer like that he legit thinks he lost all his friends and he's blaming himself And the rest of the crew? Imagine Chopper waking up completely alone, missing parts of his memory from transforming, maybe thinking he killed everyone. And Brook finally finding friends after fifty years of loneliness, just to lose them right in front of his eyes again. Then Luffy hearing Nami scream "help me," but this time he can't save her. If you think about what each crewmate must've felt, it's just psychological destruction. I can't even imagine them watching each other "disappear " like this

Something to help you understand one piece's weirdness going forward is to think of it like a dream, everything is exaggerated, that's why regular people can be 5 feet tall, 10 feet tall, and you've even seen Whitebeard be almost 30 feet tall. Everything is exaggerated, paw pads are bouncy, so the power is so bouncy it can bounce any attack or any person. Oda was inspired by older WB cartoons like Looney Tunes or Tom & Jerry, and this is pretty much the shonen anime equivalent of that.

All I can say is this is peak one piece. To this day sabaody is top 3 arcs in OP. It’s 15 episodes of just absolute peak anime. Side note, Rayleigh is just so freaking cool man, one of the most badass characters in the series. I’m such a sucker for the old man who’s still strong af. His entrance against kizaru still gives me chills no matter how many times I’ve seen it.

I don’t want to over-speculate, since Luffy values everyone in his crew, but losing Robin, Nami and Zoro seemed to hit the hardest. Robin was his last chance to save someone; Zoro was the first he lost and his First Mate, so it was a huge shock; and Nami, as his Second Mate, joined just a few days after Zoro. In her flashback, she finally said "Help me!", but now, when she did, he couldn’t save anyone. This must have been devastating for Luffy. It's also why I think Zoro and Nami are both so crucial: Zoro backs him up as his strongest support, while Nami grounds him when his recklessness goes too far, like with the Celestial Dragon. They’re almost like the angel and devil on his shoulders, the perfect balance. With the whole crew gone, it’s tough to imagine Luffy navigating all this without them. When I was younger, watching this air for the first time, I literally cried my eyes out, and the worst thing was waiting for another week. Almost 15 years later, Nami’s “Help me” still makes me tear up. I’ve never loved an MC more than Luffy in this arc.

405 is still one of my favorite episodes ngl. It's a great character-building episode for Luffy, as he realizes he's way too weak as he is right now to enter the new world. Him helplessly watching his friends disappear one by one is absolutely brutal, but also something that you would expect to happen at some point.

We should give credit to how this story is able to survive off only 1 chapter adaptation per episode. Never in anime should an arc have more episodes than manga chapters because modern animes or seasonal animes adapt 2-4 chapters per episode. Sadly one piece does not get that luxury and also suffers from inconsistent animation due to its aggressive weekly schedule. We would have reached this arc in well under 150 episodes if it weren’t for toei’s pacing. One piece has heavy depth and lore so it can survive this level of bloated butchering. It literally has 700 episodes worth of extended scenes and filler, it was never meant to be 1000+ episodes, when u do the math based on the episode count of wit studios remake for east blue saga which is being reduced from 60 episodes to 25, this show with its latest arc should still be under 400 episodes. After water 7 saga the pacing got EVEN WORSE and the anime started to have more episodes than manga chapters every arc because they were barely adapting a chapter per episode. You can even see it with Kizaru kick scene, we were already half way through the episode after all the recap and he still took minutes to lower his foot. That sequence with luffy yelling at ussop to try stop kizaru was filler too. So it’s worth mentioning because it’s really such a stark contrast to the manga experience. And is one of the reasons I actually find the anime unwatchable for the most part. It does destroy the potential and quality of this story a lot and only very few stories could survive this kind of pacing

this just goes back to what Zoro told Luffy in water 7.... we're not playing pirates. This is not a game, things don't always work out, there are real life consequences. The closer they got to the new world the harder the fights became. He struggled against Lucci sure he won but he couldn't even move afterwards it makes you think is that really winning? He struggled against Moria as well and again couldn't move and was completely knocked out. Just because you 'win' and make it out alive isn't a sign of your strength and sure Luffy has never said he's the strongest and admits he can't do a lot of things, however as viewers because it all works out we got in a comfy bubble of thinking it was always going to work out until this moment. Us and the crew got a reality check real fast, we were on a high after the punch then realized we were in way over our heads. Other crews were even a step above the Straw Hats in playing it safe so they could continue their journey.

The thing with Devil Fruits is that it’s not just the fruit that matters—the user is just as important. Kuma’s abilities, like compressing air into a bomb, repelling someone’s pain, and transporting people over long distances, demonstrate his creativity and mastery over his Devil Fruit. In contrast, an antithesis to this would be someone like Foxy. On paper, his Devil Fruit is quite powerful, but as a user, he pales in comparison to someone like Kuma.

Kuma’s fruit is a strong example of what makes Oda a unique writer. Like many things in one piece the paw paw fruit has two sides to it that are both equally important. Oda almost always balances EPICNESS with humor and absurdity and these two sides are always playing off each other. The Enel fight is a classic example of this. Enel effortlessly beats every other character until this random punk shows up and is completely immune to Enel’s powers and makes him make the Enel face. And then he does several absurd things during the fight until he wins. Oda’s absurd sense of humor is often directly woven into events of immense importance and consequence in the story. So in that same spirit we have the paw paw fruit. Oda’s sense of humor shows itself again because he just thinks it's inherently funny if this MASSIVE guy with an incredibly serious demeanor has to fight using these cute paw pads that he has on his hands and oh it turns out it’s one of the most busted powers in the series. As far as I’m aware there’s never been any comment from oda about the inspo or the logic of how the fruit works. Its power is stated in the VIZ Manga translation as “the power to repel anything” whereas the japanese says “the power to send all things flying” so you should honestly just think of it as both those things. In a fight, anything that he touches with those paws is being repelled either offensively or defensively. Outside of a fight the word “anything” carries the rest. The power to repel ANYTHING, including pain from a body and whatever else you might conceive of. Most fruits are way less open ended in how they work and many give super specific or esoteric abilities, which is what makes Kuma’s fruit unique.

My headcanon for Kizaru is that being so fast has made his thinking slow. Like, when you can literally move at light speed, you don't have to think fast. You can start moving later than everyone else and still be the fastest, so it's made him lazy. He's let it get bad enough to the point where you can almost call it a weakness of his, if it weren't for the fact that he outclasses everyone here even with that weakness.

I love that Luffys action of punching the celestial dragon had repercussions that destroyed the entire crew. Up until now every time there was some authoritarian figure or imposing rules he disagreed with, he would oppose it and win, and with each win it would become increasingly harder to overcome it next time. Arlong, Alabasta, Skypiea, Enies Lobby and now here. Luffy's constant righteousness finally caught up to him with an enemy he couldn't overcome. Just want to also say Carter this is on you, you asked for this lmao. I remember you saying you wanted them to come up on a force they couldn't beat lmaoo. Also McKay you just got suspend your disbelief lmao like I get what you mean but also why does the fruits have to make logical sense to us they're meant to be fantastical. Guys, we need to push this post to 1,000 comments, so here’s something everyone can weigh in on. If the fight had actually gone to the death, who do you think wins, old Rayleigh or Kizaru? For me, I think Kizaru would’ve won. Rayleigh’s haki seems to be very good, and he shows that when he cuts Kizaru’s cheek to stop the attack aimed at the Straw Hats. At the start you could even argue he had the edge, but as the fight goes on, it shifts. Rayleigh himself admits he’s getting too old for this, and we literally see him huffing and puffing. Meanwhile Kizaru looks calm and in control the whole time, he doesn’t seem to be struggling too much. That stamina difference is huge, and over a long fight it would matter a lot. I feel like if Rayleigh was ever going to win, it had to be done quickly, and he couldn’t finish it. Some people might bring up that Kizaru was saying he would need “preparations” to capture Rayleigh, but to me that doesn’t mean Rayleigh is stronger. Capturing a living legend is way different than killing him, because you’d need cuffs, restraints, a whole plan in place. That doesn’t mean he couldn’t beat him in a straight fight. And as for why he didn’t just rush past Rayleigh to finish off the Straw Hats if he’s stronger, I think the answer is simple. He didn’t need to. Sentomaru and the Pacifistas were already overwhelming them. Kizaru’s role there was to keep Rayleigh busy, and he did that without looking like he was under pressure. So yeah, my take is that old Rayleigh would eventually lose to Kizaru. But I’m interested to hear what y’all think, who do you guys think would’ve won ?

Absolutely agree with Cannon. It doesn't take 400 episodes for One Piece to get good, just 400 episodes is where this show begins true peak. I remember the first time I was watching this arc, I ended up watching like 20 episodes (going into the next arc) that night lmao. It was so good that my brother stopped playing Skyrim and started watching the show with me. I was already a big fan of the show but Shaboady and the next few arcs really elevated One Piece to my favorite anime.

My one piece journey was smooth sailing. I had so much fun watching it, I guess it helped that I vibe with the humor. Toei adapts barely 1 chapter per episode after 400s so One pace is needed - the pacing is unwatchable they even had to remaster FMI arc. Its disgustingly bad with so much extended scenes & fillers mixed in

I also dropped the anime completely after 500 because toei’s pacing sucks ass and continued with the manga. But that’s around the time I discovered one pace which drastically improved the experience. I’m too addicted to the manga now, I barely watch the anime only occasionally when there’s a big moment I watch some episodes as they come out. But I just can’t enjoy it with toei’s pacing.

Personally I thought fishman island & the arc after was masterful in the manga but I HATED them in the anime which doubled their length through filler & extended scenes. It’s great to talk about the work & how it resonates with us or real world issues we see parallels to. So long as we don’t claim Oda’s intent, as he shouldn’t be held responsible for words or views he hasn’t explicitly expressed. I think it’s important to distinguish between the story’s inherent themes & people’s personal interpreations to an extent due to some ppl trying fill Oda’s own shoes & claim his voice to push personal agendas or make bold claims like one piece is directly hinting about a specific issue - those things are fine so long as they are properly categorised as personal interpretations not conclusive claims to what Oda’s intentention is like claiming he’s making a stance on specific issues or making indirect explicit ties to specific issues. That’s over-attribution that ignores the nuances that are there to make room for multiple interpretations. So it’s ok to have an opinion and make claims, but we must treat them for what they are - personal interpretations. with that in mind it makes us more open to indifference and less divided

I’m back. Robin’s my favorite character, because honestly, when I first saw her backstory I was going through a rough time emotionally. Her story, her struggles, and her whole life hit me in a way nothing else ever had before. From that moment I knew One Piece was something different. To this day, Robin’s still my favorite. Next Saturday I’m getting a tattoo of her and Luffy on my arm (I’ll send you a pic on Discord when it’s done). Luffy is my favorite mc of all anime I think. He's just so...special, there's no one like him. Like he's a personification of hope with a crazy, impossible amount of determination and loyalty. When he puts his mind to something, he will do it, no matter what. It stirs something real in your heart whenever he gets up, over and over again, and clutches in and finally saves the day, bringing hope to everyone. Which is why it's even more crushing to see all his hope be shattered like this.

For me, Alabasta dancer clothes, the Thriller Bark one with the pink shirt (so pretty, and her hairstyle too), the thriller bark one again at the end with a purple-ish dress (cute hair again). Then, spoilers -> Fishman island with the cute low ponytails, Zou outfit (THE BEST TO ME SHE LOOKS LIKE A GODDESS), WCI too, so cute!! Nami forever iconic with the hairstyles especially.
