I would have to disagree with it being for the male gaze because I would wear those clothes if I was living in a maiden island😂. Plus based on historical records, several cultures and tribes such as the Amazonian tribe lived in warm climates had traditions of women wearing minimal clothing, sometimes even going without it. He actually calls them “Kin Tama”(golden balls) which is a casual term Japanese use for testicles. That’s why the girls were in awe and there was a goldfish hue of light coming from luffy’s crotch, becuase they took the term literally as luffy have golden balls in his ‘sack’😭😂 The translators just decided to not bother directly translating it and decided to localise the metaphor for English speakers.

The island of Amazon Lily reminds me so much of og Dragon Ball. Like the architecture and composition of the island, and even how Luffy acts, very similar to how Goku acted when he was younger. Obviously Dragon Ball is a huge inspiration to Oda, but I haven't really felt that impression before this arc, aside from Luffy's character and some of the silliness from the world and other characters.

If you look closely, you'll notice that Luffy's character design is a bit different from previous arcs. His arms and legs are slimmer, and his hands and feet are slightly smaller, making everything look more proportionate with the rest of his body. His hat is also bigger and rounder. This change is due to the lead character designer being replaced by Kazuya Hisada, a director and animator who previously worked on many DBZ episodes. This isn't the only change. During the Thriller Bark arc, Toei hired a bunch of new and talented animators while also retaining their more experienced ones. As a result, we're starting to see these subtle changes become more prominent, in the art style, animation, and character designs.

Sorry but saying amazon lily is "the most male gazed” is extremely reductive. Its oversimplifying both what male gaze means and what oda was trying to make. The overall style fits within the amazon archetype of isolated tribe of beautiful women distrusting of men and just because its an island of "bikini clad warriors" its really not a blanket “all men want this” gaze. While the stylizing of women are fanservicey its in line with the trope and not focused with intent to please. Their culture views the strong as beautiful and they dont act as passive objects of desire. They are dominant, powerful, have agency and political power. Luffy is not swooned over but instead treated as an alien creature. Even the "harem" trope and stuff i cant write without spoiling is played mostly for gags and undercut by luffys indifference. Im not saying Odas innocent either. Men are often drawn in terms of power fantasy while women are mostly drawn with hyperfeminine proportions in skimpy outfits and suggestive poses but seeing how the target demographic and main audience of Jump Weekly consists of young teenage boys and within the standards of the magazine he is honestly one of the tamer mangakas when it comes to fanservice

As a woman, I also really like Amazon Lily as a setting. The women are strong, and the Chinese-inspired architecture looks amazing. That said, I wouldn’t actually want to live there. Maybe under a different empress it would be fine, but Boa Hancock just isn’t the kind of ruler I’d want to devote my life to. Without spoiling anything, I know a lot of people, especially male fans, really love her, but that’s just my personal take. Also, McKay had me cracking up in this reaction, and Carter immediately guessing the Amazon connection was so cool.

I agree. A lot of people try to deny it, and I have nothing against fanservice at all (Robin and Nami in EL are still peak for me). But honestly, the Amazon setting has been done many times before, and plenty of series have handled it better (ex. Charmed or Xena). Women can absolutely be strong and cool while still being drawn and written in a male-gazey way — both can be true, and people often forget that. Throwing in a few taller or bigger women doesn’t really change that, especially when there’s so little variation in the clothing designs. Why is it that almost every outfit is just a low-cut bikini top with a mini skirt or a bodysuit? Showing skin is fine, but if you’re going to call these women “fashionable,” then give me designs that actually feel fashionable. Even Winx, which was created by a man, had the girls serving cunt in different looks while still showing legs, mid-riffs etc.

I also think it would’ve been better if they had done it the manga way. But as someone else mentioned, they had stopped making filler episodes for this arc, so instead they stretched the pacing with other stuff. I personally felt like having him remember the ENTIRE crew TWICE in the same episode was a bit much, but it’s still probably a more elegant solution than adding completely useless filler scenes. Also they adapted only 1 chapter per episode here.

I don't care what anyone says, Amazon Lily is one of the most goated arcs in One Piece. I find the pacing to be some of the best in the show, it's a snappy, fairly short arc with amazing world building, characterisation, lore, peak Oda humour, and a bunch of stuff that I don't want to say so the Geks can enjoy it for themselves. Not only that but I find that it's relevant even to the story today, and probably holds importance to later points in the manga. Very few places can claim that. From my experience, Hancock seems less beloved in female-dominated spaces like Tumblr or art communities compared to male-dominated ones like Reddit, Twitter, or Insta. And since most popularity polls skew male in participation, that might boost her rankings too. I think a lot of the debate here comes down to two separate things: how the Kuja women are treated in the story vs. how they’re drawn. Amazon Lily as an idea is cool — a tribe of warrior women with real agency and power, not just a harem for Luffy. That’s part of why the arc works. But many calling it male-gazey are talking about the visual design, not the characters’ personalities or strength. Even the Geks, all male, mentioned feeling uncomfortable in parts of these episodes and asked female fans how they felt. That alone shows the designs don’t land the same for everyone. Oda himself has said more than once that he draws what he personally finds attractive, and almost every major woman shares the same exaggerated proportions and revealing outfits. That’s just a fact, and it’s okay for people to be put off by it. Saying “it’s fine because other Jump series are worse” isn’t really a defense. Being less fan-servicey than the next guy doesn’t mean it can’t be criticized. Likewise, strong female characters can still be drawn in a way that feels aimed at the male gaze; both can be true. Different viewers will see the arc differently, and that’s normal. What makes the thread frustrating is when someone responds to nearly every critical comment trying to “correct” them. It’s okay to share your view once, but other fans, esp women, are allowed to have their own take on how their gender is depicted in a manga drawn by a middle-aged man. Marguerite is still the goat though! Also I don't agree with all the male-gazey comments too, but I understand where they're coming from and don't feel the need to "let people benefit" from my view.

I do think the pacing can be a problem at times in the upcoming arcs, especially with the frozen frames. If you guys are getting annoyed by the pacing at all, I would def recommend One Pace. this is the first time we’ve really seen Luffy truly alone, and I used to not think much of it but you can tell that Luffy is someone who THRIVES around other people. and to be honest, I think EVERYONE is like that despite how much they may value their individualism. Well? Hurp durp 20y later im reading teen vogue with my narrow "always look for problem" lenses claiming their publishing is problematic to my group and views. Whats honestly problematic is the large amount of people today lacking a mindset of trying to look for right instead of constantly searching for fault. Stop surrounding urselves and consuming crap. Realize social media is all fake. Everyone is in echo chambers constanly fueling negativity because no one is able to avoid it due to algohritms. Look to whatever activity or product youre consuming and honestly question what it brings to your life. Is it productive? Is it just making me depressed? Is this how i wanna spend my time? The guys reactions and the general attitude and tone in comment section are almost always wholesome, funny and uplifting but theres always the few comments from cronically online twitter users or discord hermits that brings my mood down.

WOAH MAN. Calm down. I think they all understand that books and manga (and thus this anime) have to sometimes include elements for sales and reader satisfaction. But a story has to be authentic and true to the author, not just some “business”. Oda does that well and I think everyone here agrees. His humor doesn’t always resonate with a lot of Americans (and others), but he does it anyway, because that’s what HE likes. He’s true to himself always. ok here’s a brief description of jack’s stream 1. he said it’s crazy that yamato was the one who gave ace the vivre card 2. he was asking where tf luffy is before luffy appeared 3.“is he just going past them?” 4. kinemon scene: “this is very sad. i got chills” 5. LETS GOOOO he shouted in a whisper (literally) when luffy was about to attack 6. LETS GOOOO LETS GOOO YESS when luffy attacked -> “this attack is insane” after luffy attacked 7. then episode ended and jack was smiling happily. “this episode was amazing and beautiful thanks for joining guys” he said I don’t know why he shouted and whispered simultaneously (or idk how to describe silent screaming) but he mentioned that his wife was listening to a new Taylor Swift album so he probably didn’t want to bother her which is very sweet. Also the video disconnected at around 2nd minute so we tried to let Jack know but he didn’t notice it for around 3 more minutes. Then he noticed, but we didn’t see his first reaction to those ~5 mins unfortunately. This is all I was able to remember and in general Jack didn’t talk much, hope this helps
