That Whitebeard moment is so damn epic. I will say one of the main drawbacks of Marineford is the logic involved with Haki, since Oda hasn't fully gotten into it yet, so anything involving it can be pretty confusing and even frustrating at times. I think the direct translation is that “I’ll die” rather than “kill myself”. The translators since impel dawn have taken a lot of liberties, altering lines that fit whatever they think sounds better, when the original Japanese lines can easily be translated literally in English and still make sense

Definitely not a bad execution Seda, I strongly disagree. Garp is talking to Ace with respect and isn’t lying or sheltering from the truth just to give him a fleeting feeling of satisfaction that will be confronted and challenged once again. How you live is what determines to you and others, if you’re birth was a good thing. Garp was goated for that. I understand having different opinions but to think yours is the iron clad correct thing and and to be so confident to tell people in a comment section that they should abide by your philosophy and that doing something else is wrong, is very arrogant and ignorant. There’s more than one way to go about things. Not every appropriate response is going to feel soft and sweet.(even though Garp’s response felt that way to me lol).

Just to be clear, this was another bad translation from the Marineford arc English translator; Ace says to Garp “was it good that I was born?” not “did I deserve to be born?”. Both lines are similar but the correct translation makes Garp’s response of “you’ll see that as you live” more appropriate.

Jack my brother, I have to correct you about what you told the boys, that flashback of Garp facing off against Shiki is not filler. That is from an Episode called Episode 0 based off a Chapter 0 that Oda fully wrote, set in the past documenting events from the time Roger was alive. It is canon as Oda confirmed, and the only thing that is not canon is the film Strong World which follows up from Episode 0. However, even the film has elements that are true to One Piece, it's basically the most canon a One Piece film is going to get. Not only that but Episode 0 is super hype. So I would highly recommend you and the boys check out Episode 0 and even Strong World if you want to watch a sort of canon One Piece film.

When you guys decide to watch strong world, which is mostly not cannon, make sure you watch episode 0 first, an accompanying OVA to the movie which is fully canon. Episode 0 is a faithful adaption of a special bonus chapter that oda wrote and published in shonen jump magazine just prior to the release the movie as a set up for the movie. The stuff contain in it is the type of stuff all 4 of you boys love.

Gonna write a whole ass essay about aces journey through shame next batch because it’s something I’ve admittedly struggled with and makes me really connect with his character. Love the scene where he sees everyone fighting for him and he exclaims about wanting to live. Something as Roger’s son he probably didn’t think he deserved. But it’s because ace is the ultimate big brother and would go to war for anyone he cares about. Now his family is returning the favor very bittersweet. Lot of parallels to robin honestly too.

It's honestly so interesting to see Ace reverting back to his mindstate when he was a kid; we saw him so angry over his father's legacy, prompting him to start fights with anyone who mentions Roger's name. But we also saw him struggle with his identity leading him to ask If he even had the right to be born. Once he joined Whitebeard it seemed like he had mostly made peace with it, especially after Whitebeard's talk with him when he confessed he was Roger's son. But when he was captured, all this guilt and self-loathing seemed to have taken precendence again. "Why are you here? Go away, I deserve this." It is only now, after he sees how far the people who love him are willing to go to save him, that he realizes how much people care about him. Which is why it is so beautiful to hear him say "I realize that I want to live." It took him a long time to get here, but he finally does.
