This was everything I had wanted in the Dunk and Egg saga. For those who know where this goes, it can be a lot more than slice of life. Its like Westeros Forest Gump with some cool mystery elements down the line. Plus your good ol fashion Knight fights and Targ lore and Revelations that impact all the way down to Dany and Jon.

I really liked this episode! I agree with the groundedness compared to more fantastical elements in GoT and Hotd it feels really refreshing. Btw Dunk's accent is Irish and he's 6'5 :)

The novellas are soo good and so far I feel like these scenes are right off the pages but ofc George R.R. Martin didn't complete it lol we're around 209 AC so maybe around 90 years before GOT and 77 years after HOTD. (I think)

In HOTD vizzyT dies in 129 AC, this show takes place in 209 AC, and GOT starts in 299 AC, so its 80 years after HOTD but 90 years before GOT

Got the book for Christmas and literally read that bitch in a day. I'm so excited for this show and the first episode was not only a great adaptation of the book but the scenes they added were honestly my fav. Dunk drunk dancing with Lyonel B isnt in the books but I love that scene so much for fleshing out just how eccentric the laughing storm is. The shit scene I still don't know how I feel about that one LOL. Literally cant wait for yalls reactions to the rest of the show!!

that poop scene has to be an attack on D&D because they have nothing to do with this show. This is an entirely different creative team from Game of Thrones and the ones who butchered it. Also I don't think this is a grand story like GOT and HOTD, this is more of an adventure of 1 Knight so a more humble theme makes much more sense. The epic GOT theme for a show about a knight travelling in roads and going into inns would be kinda odd

I wasn't keeping up with this show's release. The Gek notification was how I learned it was out. But I was pleasantly surprised. I just love the world. The vibe was definitely different, and it took a while for me to get past that, but I'm already looking forward to all the different ways the story could go, so I can say the pilot got me invested. Solid 8.5/10

Overall good episode, liked the vibe. To give context as to when this story takes place it's about 80 or so years after the war in HOTD and almost 90 years before the start of GOT. So basically almost in the middle of the other two shows.

I feel like dunk and egg are gonna have such an interesting dynamic because presumably egg is far more educated than him even at a young age so he can be the brains of the duo while dunk is the brawn

I really enjoyed watching that, I thought it was a great first episode. The vibe is fantastic and comedy has been great too. Dunk is such a likeable character too. I'm so glad that HBO has the rights to the whole Game of Thrones universe. Regardless of how good or bad the writing will be, at least I know the sets, costumes, music, etc will all be top notch.

I'm giving it a 7/10. I haven't read the books so I'm not sure where they are taking liberties, but it doesn't quite feel like a GoT show to me. I really like some of the shots and most of the music is good. I like Dunk's character so far too. I wasn't a fan of tent scene though - it felt out of place in the GoT world to me. Some of the comedy didn't land for me either. For instance, it felt like they were trying to hard when the game's master was jokingly threatening Dunk about his knighthood. I am intrigued though and would like to see where it goes.

Not like that. I just meant that it didn't feel like a party for nobles in Westeros. It felt like something out of a bizarre almost. I get the impression that scene isn't even in the book, it's something the show runners added to full time

after watching it a second time i give the pilot a 9/10. i was skeptical but idk the characterization of both dunk and egg are kinda perfect they are both so honest and innocent and can learn a lot from each other, also it feels goofy but not in a bad way its very natural. i think short season short episodes is a really smart choice and the show prolly wont miss a beat ill bet the pacing is great. i got high hopes

You're absolutely correct: it's not in the book. I also get what you mean, I felt the same way on the first watch. I've read all the Dunk & Egg books and Lyonel is much more fleshed out in the TV adaptation. In general the writers added a fair few non-book scenes (or complicated existing ones), not just in this episode but in the others as well. I'm a bit 50/50 on them ngl. They kinda take me out of it a bit, but I'm trying to be objective - and I think now on a rewatch I do appreciate some of the added layers a bit more.

Yessss. In the book Dunk's inner narration always says that he "was closer to 7 feet than 6". Huge! The casting is a total 10/10 though, not just Dunk but Egg as well.

Glad I'm not the only one who felt that way. As the season has progressed I've gotten more engrossed in it too. That's part of why I at least want to wait for this season to finish before I read the books. I prefer authenticity to the source material so I would prob have more critiques. I do think it's a good show still
