Mics are good but gives an echo from the audio of the show. Something to figure out for future videos but obviously this was an emergency set up no worries gang

Alejø

AYEEEE I MISSED SEEING NEAL ON THE VIDS.

Noha⁷

Bruh 16:22 reminded me of goku when he turned ssj blue against frieza in Resurrection F.

Dreamknight942

Cinema and the kill bill references? Perfection

NMP

Apparently Japanese fans hate this episode. I really hope they don’t get Gosso fired like they did the director of Chainsaw Man just because everything isn’t a 1:1 copy and paste of the manga panels.

Datta

Maki is the second coming

Kurofi

Very kill bill and the crazy 88’s

Tivy

NEW LOCATION UNLOCKED

Tivy

This hotel is juicy I lwk love the setup

Fernando

better mics now everyone can be heard clearly

jed d'angelo

Im ngl this episode was very over hyped by the internet. I heard all week how this episode was gonna be better than anything around because of the animators working on it. However in all honesty this was pretty much the standard quality we have been used to since season 2. Maybe im wrong but I don’t think it was that insane animation wise.

Chayma

Maki said no frauds on my watch

Brikena

„Any woman who can‘t walk three steps behind a man should get stabbed in the back and die.“ Yeah, that didn’t age well😂

Noha⁷

It's always with the exception of gojo satoru 21:05 😂😂

Melizé

"Its the Garou slide but its good" 🤣🤣🤣 im dead

jackson heighes

Hypeeeeee!! Might be my favourite episode of jjk so far

Jack

Naoya can eat dirt, oh wait, he did

𝕯𝖎𝖆𝖓𝖆 𖤐

BURN THEM ALLLLLLLLLLL I hate that fucking clan I couldn’t wait for this to happen

McKay Carter

I do think the way it was portrayed and the symbolism was top tier though

𝕯𝖎𝖆𝖓𝖆 𖤐

BRO Naoya glazed Toji till the last minute in crying his blushy cheeks 😬😬🤍

Brikena

Not Naoya thinking he has same aura as Toji for harassing people, throwing quick fists and being a misogynistic prick🤣 Meanwhile Toji folded Gojo, traumatized Geto, slapped granny out of her pearls, beat a curse in its own domain and threw trucks at his son😗 He better whoop Naoya’s ass in the afterlife for the audacity of thinking he was on Toji’s level🧍🏻‍♀️

Jack

It was definitely a super hype moment with great animation. The moment itself Is what I think was best

McKay Carter

Yeah can definitely hear that, will have to mess around with them

Lil Mimi

Carter looking drippy as always

Earthshatter

oh no mai died. anyways that fight was sick

WhynefineT

When I first read the manga, I cried when mai died.

Brooke C

Naoya being stabbed in the back by a woman was poetic

Mitch

I’d give the ep a 9.5-9.7. Crazy that they fumbled BOTH Toji moments. I say fumbled loosely but they were both def more impactful in the manga which is a shame cause the ep was damn near anime perfection. Also I def appreciate the kill bill vibe they went for with the music but idk I think a darker ost would’ve fit the tone a lot better imo.

McKay Carter

Beautiful I loved every second

Brooke C

Itachi would be proud

jed d'angelo

I really liked the ep I guess I was just expecting like Chainsaw Man movie level quality or sum idk. The show is always top tier so I can’t argue that at all👌🏻

WhynefineT

The manga was better in almost all aspects but mappa did their best to deliver. You guys should definitely check out the maki chapters it starts from 148 - 152.

Chosos Wife

Thanks for taking the time to react to it whilst away guys. Glad you enjoyed it as much as I did. I loved Naoya dying by being stabbed in the back by a woman, after the first thing he said in the show was his women who can't walk behind their men need to be stabbed in the back and die

Carrie

The scene of Naoya bullying a younger Maki is different in the manga. In the panel he’s stepping on her as she’s lying on the ground. But the way they framed the shot made it possible to interpret as SA, so I can understand ya’lls reactions. It seemed very intentional. I think Gege would agree that could have been a part of Maki’s abuse

Chosos Wife

Yeah especially with what is inferred later on about Naoya and mai

stako

naoya’s slave

Mr. John Kagurabachi

Sexy hot Maki genociding the Zenim Clan Jjk 3x4 or Goated depression One Piece 494 back story Decision decisions 💅

alex anderson

Expectations kill? Idk im not an animation expert so I can’t tell you why it would be good or bad but I think the animation before and after the Kukuru unit massacre was fantastic, similar to the chainsaw man movie in some aspects. I think the Kukuru unit fight was more about being a reference to Kill Bill but I think even in that fight the animation is still great. I think maybe the fact that zenin clans techniques are the flashiest so the colors aren’t exploding all over the screen may be what could cause people to not think it’s as good.

Mia Malvik ⚞ • ⚟

Amazing ep. I love when animators take creative liberties but I was a bit disappointed about the Toji and Maki side by side being changed like that, it just hit harder in the manga. Outstanding otherwise but I'm glad I read the manga first

RNG Master

I can see that. Not to be an elitist but the Manga version of this was better

Marcus D

Crazy shiz, it was hilarious crazy, epic and sad all in one episode 😂

ur mom

BUMya getting what he deserves 😂😂

Chayma

That’s why you’re the goat

Reanna

I love yall I really said to myself , they better have taken their camera on that trip with them

WhynefineT

There are only 4 special grades and maki is not one of them. The requirement is you need to able to take over a country on your own, that's what special grade means.

BH

Best day in Gek history. Literally my favorite shows all in one day, and all goated episodes. excluding frieren

Earthshatter

yo it might be me but i real deal feel like this could have been so much better (not animation wise) i mean on a character level. i feel like we dont really feel the weight of what she just did nor did i care about anyone that she killed. damn i really wish we spend more time with those characters before coming to this awesome conclusion.

Nico

Good news for Carter, Maki vs Kukuru Unit was indeed inspired by Kill Bill. Gege drew like that in the manga, and the director Gosso stayed true to that inspiration, if not completely elevated it to another level 🔥

Carrie

Ogi remembering the fear he felt from Toji’s presence but now because of his own daughter who he deemed a stain on his life… my god it’s so peak

Lorenzo

Maki is so epic man

Matthew Hunt Davies🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Can't believe ive seen so many people hate on this episode. The only criticism id give this episode, is the Toji and Maki comparison panel, which could've been done better.

Mitch

It’s literally just the two Toji panels and then the ost at times. Otherwise it’s perfect.

Aziemarill

Genuinely my favourite episode yet. Maki’s the GOAT

Ichigoat

Maki is easily one of the best female written characters in all of anime

NMP

It’s fast paced in the manga too. She’s supposed to blitz the entire clan like that

Ichigoat

I just know Toji smoking and that zenin pack 😂😂😂

Elijah Slocombe

Alright kid, take the contrarian cap off for once

Ante

Maki has joined the MC group chat.

NMP

It’s because people spent years jerking off to the Toji panels envisioning them as some huge grand moments where the anime would stop everything to let him aura farm. Anime decided to just show glimpses of him which is completely valid.

Earthshatter

They definitely could have taken their time on certain scenes but oh well still good

jed d'angelo

Eh? This is the first time ive said something negative about this show bruh…

StrayRonin

That just pushed maki into the stratosphere for me holy crap

Hugh

Yes the power levels have definitely gone up, my goat hakari is coming of course their up🐐

Nico

"Standard quality" this is how you know people are taking things for granted. JJK is currently one of the highest quality adaptations right now, so I get that people get "numb" but one quick look at OPM s3 or other less popular seasonal shows and maybe you can appreciate insane work on this episode more, or really, any episode for that matter. There isnt and shouldnt be a standard. One change of director or staff resources next season and that "standard" will disappear. Nothing against you, but the way you worded it felt like animators hardwork werent recognized at all.

MikeWRL

its just... so peak.. 😭😭

Tim Carpenter

I love all of Tarantino's films and this Kill Bill homage has got to be my favorite thing to come out of anime this decade. That was incredible. I will show this episode to my Mom as she too is a big Tarantino fan.

Mufufu

YES, rewatch

alex anderson

Yeah I commented on a different channels video tha the scene shown was definitely not sexual assault, but that I wouldn’t have put it past Naoya to have at least attempted that kind of abuse

WhynefineT

Manga readers are not happy with this episode, especially Japanese fandom. Manga felt way more emotion than anime, because it gave room to breathe inbetween lines, mappa however cramped everything in.

jed d'angelo

Bro’s reading comprehendion is f tier holy cow guy

jrnoodles

Thanks Geks+! I like the third coming of Toji

Melizé

😘😘😘

Nanami's Wife

PEAKKKKK This manga chapter was one of my favorites and I was the most excited to see this animated. Maki is just that girl, love her. I'm glad she ended the clan and her literally being a copy of Toji gave me goosebumps. The only thing I would say is that I wished they did the Toji and Maki comparison panel better. The manga was better in all aspects of this sequence, but this episode was still really good

Noggen

Mai is pronounced My not May (not that it really matters anymore lol)

Nico

We dont really need to know more about any of them. A massacre is not meant to bring out sympathy in this case. Also you already knew of them plenty, the way they treated Toji as someone with 0 curse energy and no CT, the way they treated Mai and Maki as women from literally s1, the way they plotted to cover up Megumi, Maki, Mai death and covet the clan head position. Thats practically enough lmao

Ichigoat

All those fancy attacks just to get punched in the face by maki😂😂

Frizen

You can still see him stepping on her while she's on the ground, the framing, blur and reading subtitles at the same time just makes it hard to tell what's going on in the initial viewing so our brain just jumps to the worst possible thing. I honestly don't think it was intentional.

Ichigoat

Naoya wants to be toji so bad im dying AHAHAH WHAT A FRAUD 😂🫵

bondbond53

In interviews Gege reveals that Toji faced harassment in the Zenin family since he was a child and was thrown into a swarm of cursed spirits regularly to fend for himself. That's where he got the scar at the bottom of his lip. People guessed that the room Maki and Mai are thrown into by their dad is where Toji endured his pain

alex anderson

Oh yeah I could definitely see how someone could think it’s SA. Especially cause I thought it was at first too, but then I saw that Maki’s hair was on the ground next to his foot, so then there was a sigh of relief from me.

Earthshatter

Well not necessarily their personality but, knowing their strength levels, their techniques, their feats or even their fighting styles would have been nice to know to even care about what it meant to massacre her clan. For example naoya was a fine secondary character to kill but the others included her father felt like nothing more than random goons

WhynefineT

Naoya went to look down on toji and toji didn't even bother to look down on him. This is why manga is better for jjk, as you can analyse plenty of subtle writing in between panels

Musoko

The pacing is maybe a little too fast, but I know why they're doing that. And I am so happy to take the hit for it.

Nanami's Wife

Me too! I have a twin too so it hit me harder

Vlad Blue

Does anyone remember if Naoya's dad technique was the same at 24 fps or was it 60 fps? Also, the Kill Bill homage and I even think they fit in a little like throwback type thing to when Gojo took out all those transfigured humans, perfect. There was another in there, but I can't remember where exactly it's from.

Naturemyth

They killed it to condense all of these moments into just 1 episode. I really expected it to get split up but they really nailed getting everything in a satisfying package of a single Maki episode.

Madison

your pfp is immaculate

beannie

this is why you’re my goats🙏

brog.

naoya ur not him lil pup

Ichigoat

Thanks I thought clown on mr misogyny man and his glazers🤣🤣

WhynefineT

I have 0 faith in the denizens of this app to discuss a topic like this with any level of maturity or sensitivity, but I genuinely think that the implication of Mai's feelings towards Maki being far more than familial love is an incredibly important part of her character (the author confirmed that mai's first crush was fushiguro and maki) Mai’s crush on Megumi and/or Maki is an inernalisation of her trauma. Culturally she is still a Zenin and is influenced by their belief system, while also those two representing the only family that never abused her. Megumi’s “type” being a person like Tsumiki literally is Freudian Oedipal formation, while the Zenin clan is Totem and Taboo, repressed incestuous desire which resurfaces as obsession with bloodlines, inheritance and domination.

Alex Michael

Yes! Bring Bron and Brady along for Season 3!

beannie

FUCK naoya fans btw❤️ (half of the japanese fandom unfortunately)

Q to Tumble

Holy shit, shut up. People like you can’t enjoy ANYTHING without adding some stupid useless unnecessary commentary.

kai

maki was really smoking that zenin clan PACK TODAY

Mr. John Kagurabachi

Can someone tell me why the Gojo clan still has motion? I thought Gojo satoru was singled handley carrying it. Shouldn’t it be resolved just like the Zsnin clan?

Daniella

The contrast between season 1 and this season's (plus s2) artistic direction is like night and day. Yes they aren't following the manga panel for panel, but i feel like Mappa has found it's groove with this type of animation similar to what they did with chainsaw man, it's just putting creativity above all else and i love it!!

Nanami's Wife

Great analysis! I was hoping someone would mention this or say their thoughts on Mai/Maki more in depth. In this episode, it felt like they sped during Mai and Maki's part (maybe it's just me). But in the manga I felt it was so much more intimate/emotional between them.

Carrie

Yeah I mean thank god it wasn’t SA but I personally think rape, incest, & abuse are major themes in jjk that Gege is interested in exploring, especially in any plots involving the clans. So framing that scene in a way that makes you question things seemed intentional to me. Just my take!

Mitch

Excellent analysis.

Madison

apparently this is a hot take but I absolutely LOVEEEE the ost, especially during Maki vs the Kakuru unit scenes. like the upbeat triumphant music as she absolutely destroys the clan that put her down her entire life. it feels like a dance, like freedom

ThirtyStik

I can’t lie the 8 animation changes kinda cooked it for me tbh …

Fujiie

Not me reading on twitter that it was also written at the end that Maki merked all other Zenin that were absent from the estate too LOL

Carrie

One of my favorite “what ifs” to imagine is a timeline in which Toji made different choices and somehow ended up mentoring Maki. He’d be her pseudo-father and they could spar without pulling punches. I think he’d be so proud of her 🥹

alex anderson

Don’t even know why this is a hot take. Manga readers seem to forget that this is based on Maki’s perspective. A critique I read was the scene should have had emotional osts as opposed to the kill bill like ones. Why would killing people she never liked be emotional for maki? Mais death had an emotional ost, everything else didn’t need it. They’ve done this perspective story telling before where Geto in hidden inventory and Gojo in the movie remember the train station argument very differently.

kai

oh my goodness the way they really replayed that punch in 4 different angles and seeing his whole face get cracked like WOW talk about karma 😹

NMP

It wasn’t cramped. All of this happened fast in the manga too lol… the entire fight from the ninjas in the room all the way to defeating Naoya was only two chapters in the manga (later on in culling games there are singular fights that last for like 10 chapters). This episode is literally longer than normal episodes.

NMP

Fun fact: Naoya is even more pathetic than you first think once you realize this bum is the SAME AGE AS NANAMI AND GOJO. I didn’t realize this until very recently even as a manga reader. He always came across like a couple years older than Maki and Mai, I thought he was maybe 20 or something.

Carrie

You’re absolutely right & I like how you said Mai is “culturally still a Zenin” because it makes so much sense that a society that values inherited cursed techniques above everything else (effectively practicing blood supremacy) would normalize incestual abuse.

patricia jimjimcherie

7:40 someone probably already said it, but that's the pitt they threw Toji into as a kid. Seems the Zen'in never learn.

Flubbedsquid

Wowww they were really inspired by Kill Bill for the Maki v. Zenin fight scene. Same environment, one woman vs a huge mob, it went black and white just like in Kill Bill, and Maki even pulled some of the same moves as the Bride did like cutting a guy in half vertically and cutting dudes feet off. Also very stylistically Tarantino with those blood splatters.

Carrie

I love how your display name is a description of Naoya's fighting style 😂

kai

i love the kill bill references throughout this whole ep that was so cool of them to do

Matthew Valentine

so um as you guys can see this season is gonna be effing nuts

Nivek

Just go read the manga then goddamn. You honestly have good takes on themes of the show but preference every little comment by berating “your fellow denizen” and the thing we’re all here watching is annoying as hell. And as someone who’s read the manga literally up until the next chapter trust me you don’t speak for all readers.

Dub_quinn

Studio Hotel 😂

Jacob Goldsmith

the kill bill reference is exactly what i saw when i watched this ep

Bellaa

woww😭 so amazing!!! loved this reaction and i see u guys are here in CA! Have fun🙌🏼💞

Mr. John Kagurabachi

So was Maki’s mom trying to save her by saying don’t open the weapons vault?

Fatipapi (Byakuya’s Girl)

Also, farewell Naoya… the gooning was short, but powerful 😔🥀 YOUR BODY WILL DECAAAAY… BUT YOUR SPIRIT LINGERS OOOON 🗣️

Fatipapi (Byakuya’s Girl)

I almost liked your comment because i thought u agreed 😂😂😂 MANGA WAS BETTER!!! 😂

Deonte Gray

Jjk visually might end up being the G of all time

𝕯𝖎𝖆𝖓𝖆 𖤐

Im sad bc I wanted to feel more emotionally connected to her and maybe it didn’t happen cus I didn’t read the manga first. But also her surviving, recovering and getting those gains happened off screen so I hated that.

𝕯𝖎𝖆𝖓𝖆 𖤐

HAJAJAJA I LOVE YOU, AND I LOVE OUR LIL RAT BOY. He was girls meal since day one 😔😔😔✨

Joy

IKR!! Bullying his cousins who're 10 YEARS YOUNGER than him. Imagine a 20 year old man bullying 10 year old girls.

Boxhibbit

11/10 Episode <3

Fatipapi (Byakuya’s Girl)

It was soooo unexpected when i was reading and i was legit just screaminggggg at the bad bitch energy. I loveeeeedddd that she managed to do what she said in jjk0, get her lick back and be spiteful but this was so much better than her just becoming a CA-less grade 1 like she originally planned.

SIIver

Absolute cinema🔥🔥

Jacob

Yea the fact this is the 4th episode…. anime of the year already like what’s topping this rn 😂

Chayma

That name and pfp are chef’s kiss

Fatipapi (Byakuya’s Girl)

I think maybe because they technically still hold the six eyes power in their bloodline/genes?

shelby

new background unlocked

Carrie

Gotta say, I have to respect how you guys always manage to keep it horny no matter the circumstances 😂😂

Fatipapi (Byakuya’s Girl)

Imagine? There are plenty of 20+yo men doing way worse to 10yo girls. We don’t have to imagine shit

Ninjinzo

to put more explanation on how Maki 'powered up' when Mai died. Just like Mai said, Jujutsu treats twins as one individual. Meaning Maki and Mai are one being split into two in, jujutsu terms (not literally one being but the cursed energy jujutsu terms), thus nerfing each other. So Mai has a really good cursed technique but lacks curse energy. And then Maki has a really good heavenly pact (same as toji's) but has a little cursed energy making her nerfed for her whole life even with her heavenly pact what kept her from not improving was Mai's existence. Mai sacrificing herself means that she can die with all of the cursed energy while maki can have absolutely 0 making her heavenly restriction work for real. And to top it off her sacrifice also led her to create a really really strong weapon through the work of her cursed energy. The weapon is what Toji had when he fought geto in hidden inventory arc.

Ninjinzo

same technique 24 fps

Anton Sakshaug (Jancked)

Well that was peak. Also excited for you guys this weekend! Have fun in the LCS!

Ninjinzo

yeah idk who you're referring to for manga readers as I am one of them lol and I loved this episode. You're just tryna fit in with the Japanese opinion since the ost wasnt to their liking. And to say the episode was rushed? My guy this whole thing was 2 chapters hella short in the manga

Seez .M

Chat, is this the greatest thing we've ever seen ?

Ninjinzo

@ThirtyStik seriously? the animation change is ur gripe. Holy weird take

Dontsop Keran

It being 1 episode feels smoother with the other stuff happening in CG

Fatipapi (Byakuya’s Girl)

Hmm this doesn’t fully make sense tho, in terms of the “one person split into two”, because wouldn’t they have to mirrow what each lacked? You said Mai has a good technique but lacked the energy, wouldn’t Maki then need to have the energy but lack the technique? Because then they’d be “one sorcerer” split into two, but that’s not the case here.

Poragami

holy shit jack and cannon are so loud

Ninjinzo

aint no way yall like Naoya

Ninjinzo

@jed you are fr comparing a show paced episode quality to a movie animation paced quality? Holy log off the internet

Ninjinzo

maki doesn't have a technique due to her heavenly pact she was born with it which means it negated all the cursed energy she would've had.

Ichigoat

Rest in piss naoya, 0 wins , great technique with 0 damages , on all fours, and got killed by a woman with no cursed energy , what he hates the most…

Steven

????

jed d'angelo

Yes I am based on the amount of hype people were putting on this episode before it came out. People were literally saying it would look better than the rest of JJK so far and its just not. Its literally the standard for what we got in season 2. Idk why yall bugging so bad its just an opinion jeez.

Ninjinzo

alright here I'll explain abit more thoroughly. the show said it themselves that 'Jujutsu treats twins as one individual.' So what I said by them being 'one being split into two (not literally)' is how you would really interpret it. You mentioned yinyang where Maki would also be able to have a cursed technique but weaker but clearly that's not the case since she has a heavenly restriction which negates that. The show in season 1 also explained Mai's situation where it explained her cursed technique. It explained how she cannot improve since she lacked cursed energy to make it more useful. Thus it's very hard for her to even create a single bullet. That should already answer ur question since the show already explained that. 'So long as I exist, Maki you'll always be incomplete.' This then tells us that with Mai being dead Maki will finally be able to be complete. If however, Maki died instead and Mai lived it'd be vice versa however Mai said herself 'It's pointless' since she doesn't even want to become stronger. However for Maki she does want to be stronger which made it easier for Mai to give up her life for just Maki, which in turn removed all of the cursed energy all together from the twins since Mai died with all of it. Making Maki her OWN individual person.

Breachr

Maki's existence restrained Mai's cursed technique. Mai's existence restrained Maki's cursed energy. This is not a yin yang situation, you are just misinterpreting it. Yin and yang refers to two opposite forces that balance each other out. Maki and Mai are opposites, but it does not balance them out. In fact, because they are opposites they are limiting each other's growth. The reason why Mai's cursed energy is low is because Maki has the heavenly restriction. The reason why Maki has cursed energy despite HR is because Mai has cursed energy. Under jujutsu, they are viewed as one individual.

JTUltima

Proof Yuji glazers are delusional

Pudding

Loving all your truthful slander

Nuoflan

yeah this one is the better explanation fati

Yuji Glazer

Brother I'm glad you haven't noticed, you can enjoy the reaction more! I can't be the only one who's seeing it though. As a manga reader, the specific phrase "Perfect (or imperfect) heavenly restriction" is straight from manga discussions! That's only one of many examples. Buuutt let me stfu. Yuji Supremacy

Sorcerer

Also did anyone else notice there hasn't been any blurring in these JJK episodes, is this a new permanent change?

Yuji Glazer

Yes. MAPPA has managed to provide undimmed / unghosted episodes to streaming services, if that's what you're talking ab.

Lil Mimi

Bros shitting on himself

Lil Mimi

Seek help buddy 👆

WhynefineT

Just to clear confusion, the only reason maki killed her mother is because she kept the secret about mai's condition.

Nanami's Wife

This episode better be rated at least a 9.5 on imdb I swear, not anything lower

Lowkii

Cannot wait for the Maki Glaze in future......Now paintetly waiting for second only to Satoru Gojo line to drop for someone.

Lil Mimi

What condition?

CHIEF

That scene had to be inspired by Kill Bill, we know the author loves Western movies, particularly Tarantino

WhynefineT

Mai was cut by her father, her mom didn't want maki to find out hence she called her out to not go there.

Jay

I can't wait

CHIEF

Damn, Carter said it 5s after I typed this lmfao this happened in Frieren too

Umineko peak fiction

whats crazy is this isnt even the peak of cour 1 lmao. Easily top 3 fights of the series from what weve seen so far. Between this episode and the new jjk modulo ch we jjk fans are eating so fucking good lately

Umineko peak fiction

Luta fans are bums lmao. Yuji way better written then the emo twink

Dasha

I also thought of kill bill during that scene

wadad sk

I've been waiting for them to react to this ever since I read this scene in the manga, Maki is easily one of my favorite female anime characters, shes SOO sick, all the maki and toji comparisons gets me so damn hype every time

Nasty

Goated episode, finally Waifu is strong :D

Amy M

Jack- Ogi's VA is the same as Rayleigh

Elle

I agree, Gege has repeatedly tried to show how corrupt jujutsu society, especially the higher ups, can be. Naoya just simply represents the male entitlement and misogyni that’s being fostered in the clans. SA wouldn’t be far fetched and would just provide further explanation as to why Maki would want to rip the Zenin clan apart, and maybe even why Toji never destroyed the clan in the first place.

Fatipapi (Byakuya’s Girl)

Im surprised btw yall didn’t make the Luffy vs Bellamy comparison with that Maki punch. I wonder if that was an homage to Oda 🤔

Vextipher

I liked the episode, but I can't help but feel the shock/surprise factor holds it up. I also haven't watched Kill Bill people are mentioning so I'm probably missing other cool refs.Naoya was a love to hate character for me so I'm sad he's gone but fitting. Looking forward to see how Maki is now after the power up and how others see her in action.

Miitei

"Any woman who can't walk three steps behind a man should get stabbed in the back and die" -Naoya fucking Zen'in 🤣🤣

Vextipher

Rationing Naoya edits for rest of 2026 lol and I see what did there.

Fatipapi (Byakuya’s Girl)

Thanks breachr, i don’t think ninjinzo still understood what i meant. Maybe yinyang wasn’t the right term, but i meant 1 whole sorcerer would have CE + a technique, but he implied twins would be split. With that logic mai would have the technique, but that would mean maki would have the ca (two halves of a whole person) but thats not true so that explanation doesn’t make sense. Your comment makes more sense. I hope i explained what i meant better this time lol (im not saying i think this is the case, obv i know maki never really had CE, i was arguing against his explanation, because the way he worded it, made it sound like they were two halves like i explained, rather than just blocking each others potential)

Luke Fox

Noooo my glorious king Naoya, he had too much aura to be allowed to live

Kim 555

Maki was my favorite character before she obtained this much strength, she was so epic without even being powerful and now she's both. This was such a satisfying improvement to her character

Luke Fox

My glorious King Naoya will return

Luke Fox

How do you discuss incest with maturity lmfao. One of Geges worst traits is his incest fetish.

Luke Fox

Is that not the exactly scene we just watched in the anime? I disagree JJK's animators have added so much more content than the manga, especially when it comes to the fights. The anime is without a doubt signifcantly better than the manga. Gege doesn't even really have subtle writing anyway as he isn't even a good writer.

Dennis

it’s a really icon scene u can probably find the clip of it on youtube but it’s almost shot for shot the same

Unlucky Trandon

The way Naoya's ability is portrayed is so cool.

WhynefineT

Kill bill referneced almost blow for blow?! This was awesome!!!

Agree to disagree. In my opinion gege is the best shonen writer whether you agree or not I truly do not care💁🏻‍♂️

Nico

We kinda "knew" cuz they were the Hei. Personally I dont see why one should spend time on random goons. Cuz they honestly are random goons in a way, we also kinda saw what their CTs do pretty clearly too. Aside from it being a thematic fight showing how being conservative and misogynistic dragged Zenin down that path, they were pretty much fodder to showcase Makis power and where shes currently standing now that she has 0 curse energy. But yeah I get what you mean.

Red Robin

yesss Maki's aura farming episode lmao this moment has been highly anticipated

Nanami's Wife

Seriously what type of person was mamagumi if she was able to save toji in this sort of state he was in and turn him around. The man was so depressed and looked a lil scary (Zenin clan abused that poor man so much) still foineee tho 😚 She deserves the noble peace prize for that. No wonder after she died Toji couldn’t bear it and became a deadbeat father. Still foineee and a angel tho 😚

Maki was on demon time

Your spoiling right now lmao. As an anime only this was also my understanding of the situation. Sorry not everyone is that dumb. Its not rocket science to figure out what happens they literallt say it in the episode 🤣. But guess what it was a theory but thanks to your comment its confirmed now.

Really? I didn’t think it was. Final quarter of the episode with the hei to noaya’s death had a lot of transitions to different styles. And tbh, it didn’t have much detail like you’d expect with a 2 year hiatus. You could definitely tell that different people were working on different sections using their style on the same art. It really didn’t flow like the other fights in the other seasons imo. If you look back, they all are VERY consistent no matter what season you were in. Maybe I’m just spoiled but it really does not make sense to me why the details lacked so hard at the very least…

No, Maki being at Toji level would make her faster and stronger than Yuji. It was said that Toji was faster than Yuji possed by 3 finger Sukuna. Only power output that could beat Maki or Toji would be Yuji's blackflashes.

Incredible episode. Expectations were high, and they smashed it! The art, styling, pacing, music, homage to Kill Bill… These episodes continue to be so unique. ABSOLUTE ART! They added stylistic elements that made manga panels shine in this visual and audible format, like adding that Naoya puts his foot on the piano and the foreboding keys that play, which blends into the following music. I kept being floored by the quality and thought put into each scene. MAPPA is cooking. Also, in that scene of them as kids, the visual in the manga is a side-on of Maki on the ground as if beaten up, and Naoya stepping on her. Worse abuse is implied though, and from the family as a whole. I like the anime decision to pan up as it flows well, but especially with low-quality zoom in and other elements, I think it’s intentionally ambiguous. Good riddance to their clan.

Enma

What really stands out about JJK to me is the atmosphere or vibe of it. Particularly this season. Dark and gritty. Just constant tension with an ominous air to it that creates these feelings of nervousness and unrest. The editing, the animation, the art, the music, the pacing, the color palette, the framing, are all done so masterfully. I haven't read much of the manga after Shibuya, so if you have finished it, please let me know how you feel about this adaption so far.

Henderson C

of course Maki demeanor different. Her twin just died :( I forget how easy people die in this show. Only 4 episodes in...

RSquirrel

Did anyone else feel something odd about this episode? I was watching it and while I love the story developments that are happening, the animation being beautiful as usual, this just didn't grab me at all. The entire situation in the vault just felt wrong and I don't know why, I guess it just felt like the presentation/directing was lazy? Also the fight just didn't do a good job of presenting what was happening (Besides amazing animation) and all the stances up shots with the dust? I have liked and disliked parts of jjk but due to this incongruent feeling I can't put this anywhere my favourite episodes. This just felt like an poorly executed, ok episode for a great series that usually has flawless execution.

Jack

😂 I love this lol

Etain

holy moly, never ever imagined what the animation would look like from reading the manga pages. Absolutely could not picture it in my head and seeing it finally animated on screen is another level of appreciation. Obviously having read the manga does spoil the surprise of the scenes, i do envy you guys' reactions from feeling the chills when the epicness does occur on screen (I crave/miss that)

I don't know if anyone's watched the yutapon sequences in Kekkai sensen yet, THIS gave me the exact andrenaline rush I have watching that. It's obviously a homage to Nakamura, but MAN Kekkai sensen was one of my favourite adaptation and it's so so so awesome when you have that level of action storyboards, and the surreal unorthodox montage filmmaking that intersects. It's a strange feeling when you finally found an idol of whom you consider has all the qualities you envision working hard on for a long while, long yap session but I truly truly love Gosso and Gege's direction and hoping to work on one of a kind project like this one day.

maki zenin, the icon that u r!! these chapters had me cryinggg back when i read them 😭 and its so cool to finally see them animated! at the same time tho idk if this is a hot take or not, but the anime actually doesnt hit the same for me here...idk if its cuz it feels like it moved thru everything so fast or what, but it doesnt seem to carry the same emotional weight to me which is kindve a bummer :/ when i was reading it, even as i was cheering for maki i honestly did feel a bit bad for some of the people (never ever naoya tho, get him mama), but here i feel like the emotions dont reach as far past the glitz and glam of the fights? granted its been at least a few years since i read it, so maybe i need to reread again, idk

me? a potato

I think you might just not like JJK to be honest and that's alright, but calling it poorly executed, lazy directing is absolutely wrong. When we talk about "poorly", mostly it will be something like episode 8 s2 where the production just crashes and the shots get taken keyframes out to minimize the quality inbetweeners have to do, which results in arkward stiff motion of the grasshopper just hovering around, because it's not finished. Or ep 18 which had incredible animations, but unfinished storyboards which makes it hard to focus. If an episode doesn't grip you the way it does for others, that just means it might not be it for you, but don't say such thing as "lazy", because this was certainly not it. And also random nitpicking but JJK didn't have flawless execution in neither s1 or s2 TT (not that I believe flawless execution is a thing)

Benny

Each to their own, but I can’t relate to this sentiment. +1 for being a manga reader who was very happy with this episode. By nature of its format, there is more room to breathe between lines/panels/chapters in manga—weekly releases are smaller, and you’re reading at your own pace. With this episode, I felt emotion and space was given to lines and scenes, and now anime viewers can rewatch, pause, watch related episodes, breakdown and discuss like we did with the manga. It has room to breathe in its own way. There’s often commentary that a manga is “going too slow” or “ too many cliffhangers between chapters with no development” (CSM atm), then when the anime airs it’s “going too fast” or “not enough time to build tension to be impactful”. Different formats, different experiences. Sometimes, I can agree. This feels different. We are getting a uniqueness in the retelling with art, sounds, depth and tweaks to the manga that add so much. The manga that you already felt the emotion from is still there—the anime is not taking that away. Let them cook. I don’t see any missed content from the twins time together—but I do see more. The beautiful scenery and symbolism in the manga is expanded on, stunningly. There are dramatic pauses and time given to single panels. The audio adds so much: the VA’s, eerie stillness with faint curse sounds, rushing and soft water, soft emotional almost religious vocals, which continues through the final clash with Ogi, and closes out with Maki accepting Mai’s request. Then the contrast of the meant-to-be cathartic slaughter that follows. Ending with the recall to the opening scene, and realization that Maki still feels empty. I think this had to be one episode, and they paced it incredibly. So I’m curious: what would you liked to have been added? For me, the explanations in the first clash with Ogi would have been nice context for anime watchers—specifically around Falling Blossom Emotion against swords, and Dragon-Bone—but those details can be gleaned from elsewhere.

Tyler

Maki just single handedly ending one of the most powerful clans like it’s nothing

Rei

This part in the manga was insane 😭😩

Saki 🏴‍☠️✨❤️‍🔥

no i dont disagree, but maybe for different reasons, idk - im no expert on animation so i dont have much to say in terms of that, but in regards to 'grabbing u' i do feel like the anime didnt really capture the emotional weight of the situation and fights as well as the manga imo

RSquirrel

I think lazy was the wrong word but I can't find a better way to say how I felt about this episode. I love jjk and story wise I loved the stuff that happened in this episode... I just don't know why mai's death and the following events just didn't hit me as hard as I thought they should have. I just kinda felt hollow watching this having a chuckle 3-4 times when the blades go flying and land somewhere else. Instead of lazy I think a better word would just be off-putting direction that just took me out of it, the cuts the abrupt movements... I think this is one of those episodes that I would have enjoyed a ton if I read it in the manga but the anime went for a more artsy interpretation that took me out of it. This is strange though as I liked it in the past when jjk got more artsy but this episode just wasn't it for me. Clarification, I still think this episode was like top 5 from this week, I just can't put it nowhere near any of the other moments in jjk.

@rsquirrel oh if u havent read it i totally recommend it! this episode covers chapters 148-153 i believe? and idk if im biased cuz its been years since i read it, but the manga pulled on my heartstrings a lot more tbh, and i cried for maki and mai there 😭 if u do end up checking it out ull hafta let me know how they compare in ur opinion!

me? a potato

I see, it was pretty fast paced I agree, but personally I had the same abruptness feeling in mind when I was first reading so I find the ep fitting, or because I'm more of someone who don't mind and kind of a fan of immediate cuts that throws me off (I love montage movies, I think this is a pretty common thing in it), pretty much why I love the latter part of the culling game as well; I did cry like every time I replay that Mai's death scene though, but thanks for sharing!

Dakota

Bro I said the same thing about the Kill Bill reference haha as soon as I saw that I was like THATS KILL BILL! Maki's change makes sense though, she just lost the last person she cared for in her family. Now all she has to live for is destroying it all and helping the others in the Culling Game. But yeah she was being held back because she had a little cursed energy, but since Mai took it all with her, now she's like Toji! She's so fucking cool, man (pardon my language). She "Mahoraga'd" Naoya's technique lol literally sat there counting his timing to adapt and beat him

ERR0R314

I've read pretty much up to this episode (maybe next episode its a bit blurry in my mind) and so far I've really enjoyed this adaptation. I think some of the criticism of some of the portrayal of important scenes in the episode are valid (Naoya & Toji was pretty brushed past) but I disagree with some people not liking the editing or music. Replaying the fatality on Noaya makes sense given how in Maki's head that moment is probably quite cathartic, the symbol of everything wrong with the Zenin clan getting what it deserved. For the music side of things Maki makes a point of leaving her heart behind with Mai so the music not being somber or serious makes sense. She isn't mournful in her actions, or introspective. She is just fulfilling a request to burn it all down and the The Kukuru Unit was a legitimate joke of an opposition for her.

Tay

Crazy part is, action wise this isn’t even the craziest fight this season.

hot take: this is the best episode of the show

Enma

I’ve seen the Toji and Naoya pages a few times on social media and thought that they were going to make it a more meaningful or I guess longer scene in the episode and explore more of Naoya’s admiration of Toji which I found interesting considering his opinions on non sorcerers. I agree it felt brushed past, it would’ve been nice but I don’t dislike/mind the change. I liked the music in both parts (kukuru unit and Naoya) but I won’t lie I wasn’t expecting it to be that tone for Naoya’s fight at least. Which is a good thing, since it subverted my expectations and seeing it in with the context of yours and others interpretations I’ve read, I think it fits quite well in the end.

Jeff

Idk if that’s a hot take… might just be a reasonable temp take But season 2 did give us some total bangers

Alex

I think it's really cool that Naoya's technique looks like "onion skinning" which is a modern animation technique, where as his father's technique (even though they are the same) looks like old traditional sketched frames. Nice touch by the animators to signify the old generation and new generations of the technique by using two generations of animation techniques to reflect them. Especially seeing as anime is animated at 24 frames per second usually just like how their technique works too. that attention to detail is just **chefs kiss**

How are all the Naoya simps feeling now that his pretty face got turned to mush? heh heh heh. I love the irony of him being so obsessed with appearance only to get his faced mashed in and then for him to get stabbed in the back by a woman after saying "a woman who can't walk three steps behind a man deserves to get stabbed in the back". Gege really made sure that man got what he deserved in a timely fashion 😂

whistle94

this episode was absolutely poetic justice ✨ seen that woman hater getting punched and stabbed by woman, was perfect 😍👌

Bob

this was so samurai champloo coded

Hayden Ton

I know the scene of naoya "bullying" maki, looked like something really horrible. But he was just stepping on her head nothing weirder. Although I believe there's a theory that Naoya did what you were assuming, to Mai instead. Makes the mother killing Naoya make more sense. But the mother also definitely hated the clan and naoya as much as maki did, but could never oppose them due to her lack of strength and the misogyny that took place in the clan. So im sure she was happy and proud of maki for killing everyone and shutting the clan down, killing naoya in her final act of liberty.

Lil Mimi

Megumi’s mom the real goat, she took that heavenly restricted rod, heavenly backshots and gave us Megumi

Naoya did not go all out against Choso unlike this fight with Maki. He lost because he underestimated Choso.

As I was watching Maki fight, I really wished Nobara was this level as the main female character and be equally strong like itadori and megumi as she always has strong dialogue. Her straw doll abilites are cool and unique but i just need her to 1v1 and clap a very powerful opponent, clash, everything gets destroyed, powerful strength, speed, and movement etc. so that she is just as powerful as itadori and megumi in the trio

That and he was confined in a tunnel and a metropolis. In this episode he had so much free range he could literally run circles around mountains gaining much more speed and momentum. *To explain first, Mai didn't "take Maki's cursed energy". Heavenly Pact works by taking your cursed energy and technique, and in return massively boosting your physical abilities. As twins, Maki and Mai are treated as one and the same. Therefore, since Mai had cursed energy and a technique, the pact wasn't truly fulfilled as the entity that is the twins hadn't properly sacrificed their part. By dying, Mai made it so that the remaining entity - now just Maki - didn't have that cursed energy or a technique, leading to the pact being fulfilled. Ngl the music is already growing on me so I'm sure I'll end up liking it, but I definitely wasn't a fan when I watched it myself. It's just sooo different to how I imagined the scene in the manga. When reading the manga I felt this was a horrific scene of someone who was abused by their family all their life, attacked and left to die horribly along with their sister, by their own father, watched her sister sacrifice herself to help her, then brutally murdered all of their relatives. The music made this into more of an action comedy feel, which again isn't something that's bad in and of itself, but obviously very different to the way it's been in my mind for years now.

Huxley Bennett

Just left my own comment mentioning this, but I can at least explain why I wasn't a fan. It's already growing on me though, so I'm sure I'll end up liking it eventually.

.Koen

I don't always like every artistic choice JJK makes but I do love that they don't play it safe in terms of art direction and animation and decide to just go for it. It doesn't always work for me but when it does it HITS.

Kiyoh

Mr. John Kagurabachi

Weird fact but everyone in Japan hated this episode lol. Not even the vocal hateful minority but just the general audience

Shockbile Gaming

why am i a bot for having a different opinion , gtfo

Mr. John Kagurabachi

Ngl I kinda agree, the animation is cool but the direction is kinda weird. Good animation doesn’t equal good episode. For example, I much prefer the mechamaru vs mahito fight or mahito vs nanami/yuji at highschool even tho they are supposedly much less stakes.

Riksu

Here’s a hot take, but I’m not really a huge fan of MAPPA’s modern animation style. It’s hard to tell what’s going on, and in my opinion it’s just way too over-the-top, when it could be a lot more compact/clean. For example, Naruto vs Sasuke at Final Valley or Kakashi vs Obito are insanely well animated, but you can still understand what’s happening, and there aren’t a million effects and explosions on screen. I’ve kinda had the same issue with the other fights this season too. Yuji vs Yuta was okay, but there were a lot of really abrupt cuts in weird places. Choso vs Naobito was really good at first, but that Supernova part was kinda meh. Plus this episode moved super fast. I would’ve wanted way more emphasis on the Mai and Maki scene, but it just felt more like they were trying to give just enough exposition to explain Maki’s awakening and rush past it so they could get to the epic fights. Wow look at these bright colors!! And is that a Kill Bill reference?!? What’s that? You can’t see what’s happening? Don’t worry about it, here’s an exploding mountain!

Sam

That’s my least favorite part about certain people who watch anime… they feel this need to make everything a competition instead of just enjoying it as good art Like people downvoting shows because they’re jealous or want a different one to be rated higher is literal 5-year-old behavior

Aye!!! *spiderman pointing meme*, I was just rewatching the two seasons since last month and man I have to say watching these two series side-by-side is so fun, Bump of Chicken OP and Unison Square Garden ED were so amazing I really miss this show T-T

forthwanderer

okay I havent watched you guy’s reaction yet but after watching the actual episode I gotta say it was done really well action wise but their was not as much weight to this moment as there was in the manga I was actually quite disappointed in that aspect. especially considering this couldve been on sukuna v mahoraga level if they stuck the landing. the manga felt like an onslaught of defeat after defeat of the zenin and you could feel the weight of her killing each one of her family members despite her apathy towards them. but here it was just played up for cool flashy moments and was kinda rushed at times, didnt even show the attacks just the impact. I think they missed the mark a bit. I feel like if this had been put into two episodes it wouldve been waaaay better.

forthwanderer

I felt THE SAME WAY!! I read the manga and I feel like they did not capture the feeling the manga did with these moments. I feel like if this was 2 episodes it wouldve been a much better experience.

forthwanderer

I agree w you bro and I LOVED this moment in the manga too

Riya

I felt the same way too. It just felt like they weren't animating the attacks but the impact more. I wished it was more clear

Nigos The Titan

I completely agree, they basically sacrificed the emotional weight of this episode for flashy fights and aura farm moments. in the manga this sequence was done far better imo

forthwanderer

just found out they adapted SIX CHAPTERS into ONE episode… like dawg… they shoulda made this episode 50 minutes like the rumors said.

forthwanderer

earthshatter you are absolutely right. this episode SHOULD have been sukuna vs mahoraga level and it just wasnt.

Kasumii_

I invested in Maki stocks way back in S1, have always said she's my favourite and now look at her! no but seriously though she's insane, to wipe out the entire Zen'in family like that... she has to be special grade level at this point The controversy around this episode is interesting to me cause I can agree with some points such as it maybe being a bit rushed and it could've been 2 episodes to flesh out some stuff... but the people complaining about the discrepancies between this and the manga are insane to me, there wasn't even anything left out, it was just that some stuff was changed but I personally think it benefitted from the changes, I think if you want a 1 to 1 to the manga just go read the manga lol. A lot of people are also complaining that the animators took too much creative liberty and changed the scene into something different and I mean... I guess? like there was very clear Kill Bill influence even down to the music choice and people say that changes the scene from a scary and messed up scene of Maki murdering her entire family into something that seems less serious but in my opinion Gege handed creative liberty over to the animators when he let them animate his series, once he did that he gave the animators free reign over how to adapt it... what I'm trying to say is that as long as they faithfully adapt the main plot of the manga and don't skip over anything I think they're free to be as creative as they want with it like we don't lose anything from the manga to this so like what is there to complain about?

forthwanderer

you are right jjk does get a really good adaptation and I am very grateful for that but I think they fumbled a bit this episode. i promise if you read the manga and are capable of feeling emotions you would understand.

Lemonsqueeze

Every time someone voices a slightly less than good opinion about the popular anime shows, the hardcore anime fans goes on a personal vendetta against them. Can you guys just chill for a second. These are justified complaints about the episode. You don't have to agree but you can also keep it civil. Everything, absolutely everything has to be an argument these days... I'm so tired boss.

Lemonsqueeze

Why do you feel so passionate about what other people like and dislike? Why all the hateful rhetoric because they don't like what you like?

Sam

You literally told me that I have the worst takes and that my opinion was the same value as saying 2+2=1 Maybe check a mirror before telling everyone else to chill Update/edit: Rasmus is a cool guy and apologized. Sorry as well Rasmus if anything I said crossed a line

forthwanderer

you should be blocked sam. you’re just an asshole. literally no one likes you bro.

WhynefineT

Missing context. They are mad because foreigners rated ep 3 a 7/10.

Sam

I’m not the one calling people assholes bro

forthwanderer

yea but youre on here trying to rage bait people and be mean, I’ve seen the comments bro. that shit is just pointless and is a reflection of your own misery.

Lemonsqueeze

For me personally, it was the music in-between those fights where Jinichi appeared. I think the instrument was a harmonica or something? It kind of devalued the good parts because it broke my immersion. I wish it didn't but I guess that is just how I am wired :/ But I can absolutely see why people liked the episode though.

Nanami's Wife

Can we talk about the Zenin kid that blew his eyes out of his head trying to hold down Maki all for Uvogin to waste time aura farming. I'm sitting here thinking, why this man walking to Maki like his comrade not legit dying from holding her down😭 I’d be sick to my stomach😭

Sam

No, I’m not but congrats on reading in bad motivations to everything I say Maybe look at your own behavior. And stop coming up with excuses for calling me profanities when we’d literally never even interacted before

Nanami's Wife

I know I could've made Toji happy too JUST ONE CHANCE BAE😔

Lemonsqueeze

Breachr explained it very well. You could also say that they were unlucky with their "abilities". There might be cases where jujutsu twins would boost each other instead.

Lil Mimi

Fk that pedo

Lemonsqueeze

And I deleted that comment because I stopped to realize that I was participating in the hate and making it worse. I'm sorry.

Sam

All good dude, same here let’s move on.

Madison

the rewatchability of this episode is insane. gets better every time

Sam

Riksu - you know what, you’re right I was rude. I still disagree with you but doesn’t mean that I wasn’t rude. Sorry about that.

Saki 🏴‍☠️✨❤️‍🔥

what @huxley said - the anime just makes it feel very action sequency whereas without the music the manga felt more horrific to me. i can appreciate the episode still for what it is, but as an adaptation of the manga its not my fav - this isnt just some epic killing spree, its the terrifying actions of someone pushed to the breaking point. also tbh while i certainly like its use in some shows or parts i dont think playing music that opposes the scene is exceptionally unique anymore, lots of people r doing it and it just didnt suit this part of jjk very well imho.

Yo Dani

unlike ep3 haha

Saki 🏴‍☠️✨❤️‍🔥

yeah it makes it more 'epic killing spree' vs 'the terrifying actions of someone bent till breaking' to me - i like it as its own thing but not as much as an adaptation tbh

Saki 🏴‍☠️✨❤️‍🔥

no its bcuz theyre trying to film certain videos (jjk, frieren, and a knight of the seven kingdoms i believe) as soon as they come out, but theyre traveling so theyre in a hotel room with a diff setup - i imagine its likely to be similar on the other two videos too (unless theyre able to make some adjustments somehow), but they said theyll be back after the weekend so it wont be for long

Saki 🏴‍☠️✨❤️‍🔥

yeah people r always complaining about pacing thats too slow but sometimes it really pays to slow it down a bit fr 😭 (says the one piece fan lol) shoulda been a long episode or one split into two parts imo

Saki 🏴‍☠️✨❤️‍🔥

?? u can enjoy things while also not enjoying how certain things r done 😭😭 uve never had an adaptation that disappointed u in someway or another? its not always just about visuals, the visuals and direction for an episode can be good on its own while also feeling a bit disappointed about it as an /adaptation/ in some ways

Matthew Hunt Davies🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

I think the lesson learnt from this episode, is that art is definitely subjective. Ive never seen a single episode be so divided. S3 has been amazing so far. I wasn't the biggest fan of Yuji vs Yuta, but that's it. To be honest, everyone arguing with each other is just one big headache that I cant escape or X or on here. I'm just hoping that this conversation dies out within the next day.

me? a potato

I would say it's a homage to old stand off samurai/gunslingers movies, I'm not too sure why people criticise it so harshly because of the unexpected, I thought it reminds me of Park Chan Wook's movies type of humor/action or maybe it's just me realizing JJK is still a mainstream shonen anime so makes sense its audience are not familiar with these choices that are more appealing for those who are art nerds, so I get you. Though I don't see that in the manga each zenin kill feels heavier, which I think troubles me alot through these opinions, unless you wanted the adaptation to show the gore slower and upclose, which I think it's also fine, but I love what we ended up with more, not because it's flashy, it's an appreciation of martial art films in choreography, it's bizzare in a hillarious way, it's upbeat while something is wrong growing still in the slight sharp music notes, it's Maki's feelings between grieving for her sister, dull anger of "nothing no longer matters", and the andrenaline of finally being set free and bask in the new giddy feeling of the newfound unleashed power. And it's only the beginning of her journey.

me? a potato

Yeah I'm so sad that people are so adamant about whether art is good or not is based solely on how they feel, art is fun when people rather all about sharing their different individual feelings about it, the discourse, rather than start splitting sides and trying to "win" the crowd or "finding your people". Expressing one's discontentment with some of the aspects is fine always, but I think people tend to try to "blame" the art too hard for making them feel slightly disappointed than its first appearance in the original medium. With JJK is worse because people simultaneously don't like the series and disappointed with the "unfaithful" adaptation in anime culture in general, it's just....strange, but sad. Sigh

me? a potato

Ultimately everyone has different experience reading/watching the series, but for me I just love enjoying what is being showcase, as the writer and the show's director have a clear connection on how the series look.

Saki 🏴‍☠️✨❤️‍🔥

honestly in rereading the chapters i appreciate the anime more for this! it had been some years since i read it, so i had to check how much of it was past bias. they did do a very good job and while ive already made my comments about how i dont care for the tone they went for (to be clear i do like the juxtaposition of songs in plenty of other shows - not animes, but the last of us and fallout come to mind - i just dont care for it here specifically) and i maintain that, they did cover pretty much everything even though it did come across a bit rushed to me in the episode. theres smaller details like the fact that it was naoya (not symbolic for mai) brushing over makis shoulder that were way more clear in the manga, but i mean other than that and my personal preference regarding music choice for the scenes, theres not much to complain about

LuvStarburst

This episode was so peak and I'm glad you guys found a way to upload your reaction for the masses .

Alexander

Amazing episode the kill bill reference was perfect

me? a potato

Yippee glad you gave it another go, now that you mention I wanna go binge the manga again lol (I've reread it like 10 times now)

Sasha (Yare Yare Daze)

I don't like the animation where you can't see what's going on like you're literally looking at mush. Also the power scaling is so weird because why did Choso almost no diff Naoya but Maki had at least some difficulty. Like Naoya made it more difficult than the whole other Zenin clan but she is supposed to be Toji level. Also she is not Toji😌 Toji is him🥶 And the pacing of this arc is way too fast. I understand she is powerful so she can just smash these guys to pieces but some slowing down would be nice. My brain can't keep up. I don't mean One Piece pace though😁 but give me some Farmland Saga perhaps. Also I got spoilered how Maki slimed the whole clan so maybe also that's why I'm snarky about it. But the fandom really makes me hate the whole show from the deepest bottom of my heart. Worse moments still to come. Peace out.

McKay Carter

Yeah it’s hard trying to get the show volume out of our mic volume it kind of mixes in there

McKay Carter

These comments are interesting, didn’t know everyone was so split with their opinion of the episode but it’s fun to read!

Crogadile

blah blah blah shut yo ah up and don't watch then. Good lord

Unlucky Trandon

Why can’t people just have their own opinions without getting called names for it like damn. Why are people taking others opinions so personally

Tempered Glasses

The beauty is that now you have both takes, so you can enjoy the scenes from both perspectives. A tragedy of a use and revenge, and a badass dish of justice served cold.

RNG Master

Because chosos technique is simply a better match up and he caught Naoya off guard multiple times because his blood manipulation didnt follow the same rules as normal blood manipulation since hes a cursed womb. Also he had an original technique that naoya didnt know about. Everyone knows about toji in the zenin clan so they know what to expect from maki which is why it was tougher

RNG Master

Yeah she could probably pack up special grade curses but she needs cursed tools to do so since no cursed energy

RNG Master

They left out details like the explanation of abilities of the hei members to make more time for the kill bill action sequence and im cool with that

Benny

Treating power scaling as only numbers to put against each other, and decide the outcome, would be unrealistic and boring. Fights have different motives, context, tactics. Naoya got caught off guard by Choso. He says it in this fight. He took it easy, was distracted, relied on his limited understanding of Blood Manipulation, and didn’t know Choso wasn’t human. With Maki, he has a bunch of strong motives, understands Toji-like power (and she doesn’t have weapons to surprise him), he doesn’t hold back, and continues to speed up, like explained by Tengen narrating. Also Maki is learning how to use her new power 🙂

Mauricio.

I loved this episode because we got to see my girl absolutely wreck that misogynistic Zenin clan 😈.

Sasha (Yare Yare Daze)

Getting caught off guard is an anime trope I will always hate. But I get what you're saying.

Mitch

They literally spell it out MULTIPLE times in this episode that she IS Toji. It couldn’t be more clear.

Mitch

They adapted 5 chapters not 6 (they skipped the panda stuff that’s gonna happen next ep) and 1 of those 5 chapters was 9 panels because GEGE was sick when he was writing this arc. So really 4 chapters for an extremely action centric arc isn’t crazy in the slightest. Plus this ep was 28 min instead of the standard 23.

Unknownlink0

Pretty good ep apart from when Maki was fighting the fodder that looked horrendous for JJK standards , it defo had that janky unpolished feel Yuji vs Yuta had so I hope its not a trend in this season.

Sasha (Yare Yare Daze)

Mitch you don't have to take everything so literally. Like damn. I'm saying she is not equal with Toji for me. Toji is just way cooler character in my opinion. I'm not a dumbass. I read the subtitles.

Sasha (Yare Yare Daze)

Nash you're just wilding. Or do you mean she is stronger than Toji? Because Toji just is that guy. The man. The "better animation" and better fighting sequences don't fool me😌

kuza

u js said what im talking about, u are disappointed in an amazing adaption lmfaoo

kuza

because i can? just as people express their dislike on the episode, all drooler talk

kuza

legit js a brain diff

Saki 🏴‍☠️✨❤️‍🔥

yeah no, people getting unnecessarily rude or mean (regardless of stance on this or that) about things is kinda weird behavior :/ its the internet so its bound to happen and people are prone to get passionate regarding their favs, but especially on a platform like patreon where people r more likely to be adults with adult money, its just weird

kuza

jesus yall truly confuse me

Unknownlink0

What about what I said is so baffling

kuza

calling an animation style meant for fluid clean animation "janky" and "unpolished" , also using the word HORRENDOUS lmfaooo like thats unreal

Spidey

its finally here lets goo

Unknownlink0

Exactly , reduced detail for fluidity yet made something that looked anything but fluid , Sukuna vs Jogo is an example of this animation style used well and even the fight at the end with Maki vs Naoya at parts , that's why I said ''For JJK standards'' since that is honestly the worst the show has ever looked.

Zero

bro said a whole lot of nothing. also choso didnt no diff naoya, he was cocky that gave choso time to use his technique. if naoya kept bashing and freezing choso, he cant do anything.

kuza

so instead of clowning the animation itself and saying its horrendous, just say the animation STYLE isnt YOUR favorite

Brent Kilgore

Just gotta be frank - if you dont know this is peak of peak - you dont know ball. Sure art is subjective.. but thats preference and taste. Theres still objective measurement aside from it.. harder to measure but if not there wouldnt be art school or awards or famous painters or anything.. should be able to detatch personal preference from measuring cinema or other very explored and studied forms or art.. so any negative comments in here better be carried by "in my opinion" or "personally..." because any generalized negative comments are just wrong regardless of subjectivity

Madison

one small detail I love is when Mai and Maki are on that beach, Mai no longer has her jujutsu tech buttons on her clothes anymore. in her final moment, in sacrificing herself for her sister, she is finally free from participating in a system she hated, and in turn helps free Maki from the Zenin clan

Unknownlink0

I'm saying I do like the style...when its done right like in the examples I said , misconstruing for the sake of argument atp.

ginabella

Btw, they portrayed this poorly for some odd reason, but the scene where Naoya was bullying Maki, he's stepping on her head. It looks like he's doing something way worse in the anime, but the scene in the manga is clear.

WhynefineT

This episode really made lot of other fandoms insecure on twitter lmao jjk is so back

Caraxes🐐DT

Naoya up there throwing marshmallows and yall come disrespecting yuji 🤣

GBuckets

They need to relax, the US wasn't saying any of that when they made ATLAB, Breaking Bad, The Wire, Sopranos

GBuckets

Don't listen to these 12 year old fans man, i agree with you. Kids nowadays talk about Sukuna vs Mahoraga as the greatest fight in anime history and i disagree.

M1GZ

Calling the zenin clan weak is just dumb asf lol. When maki’s dad alone solod her before she awakened. Shes just an absolute animal now. Jack respectfully calling the Zenin clan the weakest of the three whwn you don’t know anything is dumb. It’s been stated multiple times the Gojo clan is a one man show so probably no one In that clan that’s stronger than the Zenins except for Gojo and when Naoya meets Choso before knowing he’s a death painting he’s like pfff blood manipulation I can handle that. So no these guys weren’t riff raff at all as this episode clearly showed and they were probably the strongest of the three clans.

M1GZ

Beautifully done ep but my goodness was that some of the worst osts I’ve ever heard took a 10/10 ep and brought it straight to like an 8 with that goofy ahhh soundtrack.

kuza

a lot of it was on the jjk fandom though

WhynefineT

Oh I'm certainly not talking about the critics on ep 4, that is ofcourse mostly jjk fans.

forthwanderer

the tone still doesnt match the scene imo just because they try to be cool, artsy, flashy, and pay homage to their inspirations like kill bill, doesnt mean it was the best choice. they kinda did their own thing with it and sometimes thats a good thing but in this case I wish they actually kept the tone from the original source material bc the emotions were a big part of what makes this so good and I feel like we barely saw any of it. it almost feels as if mappa as a studio is a little soulless. they pick up dark/brutal manga, they overwork their staff, they hardly ever show emotional moments in their anime and when they do they are often left lacking in emotion.

forthwanderer

im disappointed bc it could’ve been a way more amazing adaptation if they REALLY stuck with the source material

kuza

yea yall exactly who i be talking about, have u only watched 2 anime and dont realise how spoiled u are 😭😭 literally one of the best adaptions man

kuza

no i know what u mean, but its also jjk fans trying to bring up other shows for literally no reason

WhynefineT

Are you one of those guys on twitter?

Max Hinton

calling it horrendous is a crazy stretch though. Hella strong word "horrendous" that I think should only be used for one punch man season 3 xD

Max Hinton

lmfao fr. We quite literally just sat through the FUCKING KAGUYA ARC which had some truly ass writing and horrible animation. This is like finding a golden scar in the sea of anime bruh

GBuckets

Meh, one punch man season 3 still has better animation

Conk

If your clan gets neg diffed by one person, your clan is weak.

kuza

why are u being in denial 😭 i love jjk but like the fanbase all over twitter is bringing up other shows for literally no reason

Animeke

“Why wouldn't you stay at the bottom with me?” from season 1 breaks my heart now.

Animeke

But let's be honest, Naoya was a fun character.

Unknownlink0

Again conveniently missing the part where I say ''For JJK standards'' for the sake of argument , there isn't a stretch of animation you can cite from JJK that looked worse then that Kill Bill homage scene , again emphasise on the 'from JJK' part.

WhynefineT

Sure bud, it has nothing to do with jjk's popularity and adaptation.

WhynefineT

So if gojo kills a clan does that mean they're weak?

GBuckets

This has got to be the most garbage take ive ever heard.

GBuckets

anime fans are just childish in general man.

kuza

brother genuinely what are u talking about

WhynefineT

Just mind your business and go on why are you so obsessed.

GBuckets

nah i agree. I don't even really like JJK but this episode was actually one of the best ive seen

kuza

gotta be rage bait, its called a conversation

JTUltima

I agree!! I still give the ep like an 8.5/10 but in the manga this felt like a horror scene which was cooler to me and the music changed the vibe completely(I guess I wouldn’t care if I didn’t read the manga?) and this was way too fast it should’ve been two entire episodes imo

kuza

bad taste

NMP

You can most definitely find animation that’s worse than that in JJK. wtf lol. Yuji vs the grasshopper and fighting in Dagon’s domain before Toji got there definitely come to mind

NMP

Yall are overthinking this. A normal 23 minute anime episode usually does 3-4 chapters (MAYBE 2 if it’s straight dialogue like episode 3). This episode did 5, not 6, but 5 chapters, in 28 minutes. It’s really not that different. The arc is fast because that’s how Gege did it. From “let’s get started Mai” all the way to beating Naoya is told in 2 chapters. A lot of the big main culling game fights later on are like 8 or 9 chapters.

NMP

Sendai, Hakari’s main fight, and Yuji vs _ towards the end of Part 2 are gonna be insane

GBuckets

it's sad because she was brainwashed into submission and a broken woman. She was unfixable but at least on her last seconds she was able to have her getback

GBuckets

i personally disagree. I think scenes getting adapted from manga to anime is a better experience than just watching it outright without knowing what happens.

GBuckets

because it's rushed. This could have been a whole arc by itself but they reduced it to one episode

kuza

i already said i know what u mean to this before 😭 i was talking about a whole nother thing

WhynefineT

You were saying it's because jjk fans mention others show were you not

cozo

600 comments recording in a hotel room 💀😭

Unknownlink0

Dagon's domain part when it aired was unfinished the Blu-Ray version looks great and I'll give you the grasshopper scene which really isn't something to write home about since... I mean its Yuji fighting a fucking grasshopper not the clan that made his childhood a living hell...

Tivy

Just finished the episode and HOLY PEAK THAT WAS INSANE! Maki is such a slept on character and always has been.

forthwanderer

yea now that I’ve sat with it and reread it I feel the same way. this couldve been a masterpiece but for what it is its still really damn good.

forthwanderer

I seriously dont understand why people get so upset over you expressing your opinion, if you dont like it you dont like it man

Tivy

It’s incredibly fitting that Naoya’s very first lines are him talking about how women who step out of line deserve to get stabbed in the back, only for his own end to play out that exact way. Even after being utterly beaten he’s still left breathing, and yet it isn’t Maki that finishes him off. It’s her weak mother, on the brink of death, who delivers the final strike from behind. Given everything he said and stood for, the irony is intentional and SO satisfying.

Tivy

What makes Mai’s story so sad is that neither of them was ever really free while the other was alive. Mai’s technique was crazy in theory but barely usable, and Maki could never fully break past her limits either. Mai never wanted to be a sorcerer or chase power, but she knew Maki did. And she knew Maki would never get there as long as she was around. So her choice is mostly about finally letting Maki live on her own terms, even if it kills her.

Tivy

Man u just don’t get it 😭 horrendous take imo

Tivy

I was thinking this too, and maybe it was intentional? Even if the manga version is clearer about what’s happening, the implication still lines up with who he is as a character, so I wouldn’t be shocked if this episode leaned into the discomfort on purpose. It might’ve been a conscious choice to make the scene more unsettling or leave it a bit up to interpretation rather than spell it out.

Tivy

Wow I didn’t realize this episode was this divisive until I started reading the comments. With the ratings and hype I assumed most people were on the same page. Now knowing they adapted like six chapters into one episode, I can see why some people feel it was rushed and maybe would’ve worked better split into two. Personally though, I thought it was great. Could it have been even better with more breathing room? Maybe. But judging it for what we actually got, I really loved it. It’s been interesting seeing how differently people are reacting to it.

Tivy

I don’t agree with the takes that this fight is bad. JJK just relies a lot on its fights, so the bar is insanely high after stuff like Sukuna vs Mahoraga. Anything that doesn’t hit that level gets picked apart. But even in those fights, there are moments you can’t track because everything is so fast. But I think with this fight it’s intentional, like they want us to feel how overwhelming Maki’s sudden speed is rather than lay it out cleanly. I also like a lot of the stylistic choices, and while I’m sure there are nitpicks to be made, I think the episode deserves the praise. Also I’m not a manga reader, so going in without expectations helped my enjoyment.

Tivy

I agree!!

Tivy

I said this in a reply, but I really think the way the anime made the scene of Naoya bullying Maki seem like SA was deliberate. Even if the manga presents it differently, the implication the anime leaned into fits his character and the abuse Maki endured. I think it’s less of a misstep and more like a conscious choice to make the moment disturbing and up to interpretation.

Nico

*5 chapters. And they animated it exactly how it played out in the manga. Actually, they expanded on the fight quite a few bit. So even though Im a manga reader, I also dont understand the complaints. I do agree there could have been more breathing room for Mai's death. But when you sit down and map it all out, it is incredibly difficult to divide those 5 chapters into 2 episodes, the pacing would be very slow and dragged out. Especially chapter 152 (Maki killing her mom) was only 9 pages long in the manga (Gege had health problems during that arc). Its simply illogical, given what would be animated next. CG at its core moves very fast. Thats just the characteristic of that arc.

Tivy

l agree. It's one of those awkward chapter amounts where you either have to stretch it into two episodes or condense it into one, and I think choosing a single longer episode was the right call. I'm glad to see a manga reader happy with the adaptation, especially since I really loved it as an anime only viewer!

Tivy

It’s not surprising how people are already turning this into Maki vs Toji instead of Maki AND Toji. Why do some anime fandoms make everything about power scaling 😭

Jabriel Stockton

Yeah and I guess a Toji level threat is just a fraud. Like what is you talking about?😭✌🏽

Tivy

Literally the entire season Naoya was just spamming punches and doing barely any damage. Pure rage baiter. Like here comes the tickle monster ig 😭

Haha kill bill instantly popped in my head as well. Definitely a homage. I always loved maki, when she “died” I was so hype saying “bullshit! She ain’t dead.” I knew she was too bad ass to go out like that! 😂 I’m still not sold nobara is gone honestly.

Chrissy

Totally! They are the outcasts. The ones that scare and threaten their clans because of power.

Chrissy

I’m not a jjk manga reader. But I think sometime’s with a anime, people overestimate how much content you can get once you make the chapters actually move, If that makes sense. Obviously a generalized statement, but sometimes you have several pages for like 10 seconds of “time”. So once it moves it feels “rushed”. Also dialogue that is going on at the same time, but in a manga it seems longer or like “separate”.

Chrissy

Crazy take lmaoooo

Chrissy

I assumed he was like in the process of pushing on her face, like into the ground.

Chrissy

Oh man. I see some people are complaining about the animation. I think a lot of people are simply spoiled by how abundant anime is now. These artists work tirelessly. It absolutely makes sense to sacrifice some detail on no name npcs and mountain ranges, etc. this animation is not bad. Like I think people are starting to really take for granted how much work this takes and also how these studios are always working on multiple projects. If they had an extra 6 months - year. Could it be better? Sure. But there are deadlines and other things in play. They don’t just have an undisclosed amount of time to work on this like it’s a passion project. Everyone involved went off with this episode for sure. It’s important to know when detail matters and when you can sacrifice some. You can’t compare a very movement heavy focused anime, where 2/3rds of the episode is action, compared to one that has like a 2-5 min action scene. People are eating too good with anime now 😭

That’s a different tier of hating lmao. Too much time on their hands

Osiris704

That’s good context. Tbh it felt random for the mom to stab Naoya in the back at the end. I understand the full circle symbolism, but it just felt completely out of left field given how she treated Maki and Mai this episode. I guess you could chalk it up to issues with pacing since there was so much content to adapt in one episode

Osiris704

Wouldn’t say the best episode of the show but it’s def up there🙌🏾

Chrissy

Oh no. My comment is gonna age like milk 🥲

Vernus

I love the whiplash reference with the drums. Reminds me the the final bit of the movie right as it ends

LITTLEMG

anyone get some kick ass reference from that one scene where kick ass and hit girl meet and she kills those guys. She stabs one through the door, she slides under the sword and doges with that camera view and chops somones legs off. Idk but def kill bill vibe aswell.
