I was on Ep. 90 of OG back then and am currently on Ep. 349 of Shippuden (Kakashi Anbu). Nonetheless, I can’t wait to finish it. Literally has one of my favourite arcs ever and one of my favourite characters ever.

Respectfully, bleach might be the worst show to watch in dub. Not that the dub is bad its actually pretty good, but the shikai and bankai pronunciation is nowhere close to the sub, it breaks the immersion everytime

As somebody that's watched Naruto in English, Spanish and Japanese I never thought any of them were bad at all and if anything the voice matching is pretty good though I do believe the original language is usually better (except Shrek, Shrek in Spanish clears Shrek in English)

I personally like both Naruto sub and dub. For the dub, as a kid, I remember watching new episodes of Naruto every Saturday night on Toonami (Cartoon Network). Same goes for Bleach and One Piece for the same reason.

Just watch the Boruto movie instead of the tv anime, it’s fully canon, came out a year after ‘Naruto the last’ movie and was written by Kishimoto. The tv anime episodes of the movie are an adaption of the boruto manga that wasn’t written by kishimoto and spliced and changed up some bits to fit the boruto manga canon.

I grew up watching the entirety of Naruto in dub and most shows on toonami. There was no choice but to watch in dub so a lot of us grew up watching one piece, Naruto, bleach, Inuyasha, fma, cowboy bebop, etc… all in dub. Then thanks to kiss anime went on to watch a bunch of other anime and rewatch Naruto in sub then dub again and liked the dub better, probably because of growing up watching it in it. So I do think I am a little biased towards the dub as you guys are towards the sub, and that’s ok.

Just to elloborate, I didn’t switch from dub to dub for preference, it was just that at the time there was no more dub episodes and it was going to take at least another year for more and the sub was still airing weekly lol.

Good vid, I disagree fundamentally with y'all on Naruto on almost everything, officially, however haha. I enjoyed the discussion though. For clarification, there was a poll that Kishimoto ran about the one character to get a personalized chapter and Minato won, edging out maybe Itachi. So he wrote one chapter called Naruto Gaiden: the Whirlwind Inside the Vortex. It was a beautiful Minato chapter and the latest released by Kishimoto and it came about 5 years after Naruto chapter 700. Well worth reading. Sasuke is one of the most interesting in Boruto FYI, specifically because he gets the kind of direction and... arc to his story fully realized and it feels authentic. Trust me, he is the guy you want on your team, even if you somehow don't believe that. Another thing to note is that you guys generally (as a viewer, I'm saying this) don't really care about intonation that much while you are watching the sub. You rarely call it out anyway, and it makes sense, reading every sentence of the story takes concentration. But listening to words gives more time to watch the animation, to notice the character drawings and to feel the vibe of the story. I'm not sure if that makes sense, but for an anime like Naruto, it's really meant for watches, rewatches, and mass appeal. People grew up on the dub and until YouTube got big and reactions became a thing, sub wasn't even a consideration. You underestimate the age, era that this came from, the people that were watching Linkin Park AMVs of Naruto vs Sasuke, the pop culture, the forums foaming at the mouth about relationships and shipping wars, and the people sharing this English dub with their brothers and best friends and traveling to Japan and stuff. The theorizing was absolutely insane back in the day, you can not imagine. I'm not upset that you feel the way you do, from your context it makes sense, most reactors are elitest about sub reactions. Almost everyone watches Naruto in sub on YouTube, it's unfortunate to me, but I'm a minority that rereads and rewatches content often, I guess. Thanks for the vid boys

i refuse to watch dub with pretty much every anime but the dub for this show and Death Note fit the personality or who theyre supposed to be as a character a lot better and the performances themselves are either good/great or at worst for me, arent intolerable minus a few moments. you guys having watched 700 eps of sub and going back to judge + already being division 1 sub glazers in general make it damn near impossible for anything but the sub to feel better for you

The part about the dub that i dont like, is that they speak in a very weird way. Its like they are dragging the last word of their sentences a lot of times and putting emphasis on the wrong words. Most of the voices are decent or good, but its the way they speak thats the issue to me.

What’s kinda weird to me is how quick you guys are to completely write off Boruto based on the fan reception. Just look at MHA, you guys thought it would be terrible but it ended up being one of your all time favorites. I’m not saying Boruto would be anywhere close to that. Boruto - especially the beginning of it - isn’t always great. It starts off more as a sequel to Naruto than its own story, but it definitely finds its identity later. If you’re just not that interested in the universe, that’s fair enough. Naruto is a complete story even without the sequel. But I will always recommend the Boruto movie (and ep 65 obviously) for those who aren’t really sure if they want to invest time into it.

What put me off the most is the fact that Boruto takes place in a modern world, with a lot of modern problems. It's the same with games, I absolutely love the Zelda franchise but if they'd ever make a modern day version, steampunk version or futuristic version it would throw me off completely. So i understand why some people like Boruto. Episode 65 and the build up to that, was AMAZING. I think even though you are not gplanning to watch the whole Boruto series, you should still watch at least up until that point, just for the sake of those episodes.

What a journey it’s been for yall. Welcome to the official end of Naruto. There were some rough rides but I hope yall don’t regret starting it. This was my first ever anime when I was around 12 or 13, and it was the gateway to the best damn medium for fiction I’ve encountered. Naruto will always have a special place in my hearts, because the lows (and there were many) helped get to the highs. If yall decide to continue on to Boruto, you know who to call, and if you decide not to, that’s ok too. What a long journey this one was. Onto the next ❤️

Nah, because most of the community recommended to watch it all as we said that those episodes would’ve added so much context for you including Boruto the movie but for some reason part of what we said was ignored so idk. But I guess if the goal was to finish Naruto in January then that’s done. It just throws me off when you say some things came out of nowhere (like Ino and Sai) or that Sasuke didn’t get much character development when y’all willingly skipped 15 episodes which show exactly this.

I feel that I always prefer dub for several reasons. One is because I want to be able to multitask sometimes. Another is it is what I grew up on. And then lastly, which I find most interesting, is that psychologically, I have a deeper emotional connection with dialogue in my native language rather than having to read it. The words pack more of a punch for me than reading a sub. For instance, the "Blood, my blood" scene is just so much more powerful in English because I can hear and understand at the exact same time.

I know you guys said you probably won’t watch Boruto anytime soon, but I had to at least make a case for why it might be worth checking out one day. I wouldn’t be able to stop thinking about it if I didn’t lol. Naruto was one of my first anime back in middle school, and I was deeply attached to it. When it ended, I had serious post-show sadness, so I tried Boruto just to see Naruto as Hokage and what the new generation was like. At first… I honestly hated it 😅 Boruto annoyed me, the vibes felt off, and it seemed like there were no real stakes. I dropped it and didn’t look back. Years later, I kept hearing people say the manga was way better than the anime, so I gave it a shot - and it completely changed my opinion. The story is tighter, the stakes get way higher, and Boruto as a character has so much more depth than I ever gave him credit for. I was also shocked by how well they handled the Otsutsuki stuff. I hated the Kaguya plotline in Naruto, but Boruto actually made that side of the lore interesting and intense. Some of my favorite fights in the whole franchise are in Boruto - and not just for the new gen. Naruto and Sasuke both get incredible moments, and the choreography and animation in the big fights are insane. I also ended up loving Sasuke way more here than in Naruto, especially through his relationships with Boruto and Sarada. Two Blue Vortex (Part 2 of the manga) is where things get especially wild. The tone is darker, the villains are compelling, and the long-term stakes feel massive. It really feels like Boruto’s “Shippuden era.” I totally get needing a break after finishing Naruto - that ending is special. But if you ever do come back to this world, I really think the manga-canon Boruto arcs would surprise you in the best way. I used to be Boruto’s biggest hater, and now I genuinely love it as much as Naruto… maybe even more in some moments. Also, if you never end up watching Boruto, I’d still really recommend watching the Boruto movie at some point - it’s a great standalone story and gives a really nice look at Naruto as Hokage and the next generation. But if you do decide to watch the series, you actually don’t need the movie, since the anime/manga retells and expands that arc. Either way, thank you guys for the amazing Naruto journey. It’s been such a nostalgic, emotional ride watching along with you all. I’m excited to see what series comes next! Onward to the next adventure!⏭️😆

Small recommendation on the openings McKay. Opening 19 of Naruto Shippuden has 3 versions (visuals), I recommend you guys watch the first and third versions of it. The first version focuses on the Kaguya fight, and the third version focuses on the Final Valley fight between Naruto and Sasuke. If you guys want to the second one too then go ahead, it's good too, but the first 30 seconds reuses visuals from the first version.

As a one piece and naruto fan, I've had Naruto above it most of my life as an anime fan due to nostalgia and what it meant to me growing up. On the rewatch, I think I put one piece slightly ahead of Naruto as a story. If I was going to go by who had more of my favorite moments from the shows, Naruto would win that pretty easily. But they are both goated shows and I don't think it matters who thinks which one is better, we can all have a personal preference to one or the other.

It is a canon event from the pipeline Naruto -> One Piece. I love them both so I try not to pin against. But if we’re being honest here, One Piece is better, no debate. I personally think anyone that disagrees is in denial. I think One Piece haters are people who haven't seen it or just hate for the game, there's no in-between. A lot of Naruto fans have been thru that pipeline, so dw they either know that One Piece is good or still wanna hate bc they can't go against their goat or bc they refuse to watch. Sub vs Dub is very interesting to me because English and Japanese have almost completely opposite grammatical structure. If you say in English "I drove my car to the store." the proper grammar in Japanese is something like "I store to the my car drove." So you can see why they can't just 1:1 translate the lines, it would be very jarring for an English speaker to read.

Also, as a consequence you often get some weird moments in anime when characters react to other character's lines. Say the "store" in my previous example was some shocking subject. In English grammar of perspective, verb, subject it's very intuitive to have these big shocking moments with dramatic pauses; the shocking subject is at the end of the sentence. In Japanese though, the subject is at the beginning, so you get these weird moments where a character brings up some shocking subject, then the other characters wait patiently for them to finish the sentence, then act all surprised for dramatic effect.

Dub will always sound like strangers trying to impersonate the characters to me. I don't care how good they deliver 1 or 2 lines, I feel like I'm trapped in Bizzaro World or something. I'm clearly biased but it's still a crazy take by Carter to give dub the W for the Naruto-Sasuke Final Valley scene. Naruto's dub VA actually did good but lines were delivered so much better in sub. The pain in Naruto's voice when he feels like a fool is what really wins me over too. It just feels like it has more depth to it.

It's highly regarded as one of the best animated fights in the whole series Naruto & Sasuke vs Momoshiki Otsutsuki Another great episode that was written by the original author, and ties up Naruto and Kurama's story beautifully, is Boruto episode 217-218 (You'll cry) Naruto vs Ishiki Otsutsuki If you stil care about great episodes in Boruto, episode 39 also written by the original author, is a story about Orochimaru and his son Mitsuki which has cool fights. If you're a fan of Naruto, I really think you'd enjoy the big hype episodes of Boruto at least. Sakura has a cool fight against Shin Uchiha too (This was also written by the original author)

On what planet bro😂there's like 9 S tier shippuden openings easily, u got diver, blood circulator, blue bird, guren, sign, toumei datta sekai, hotaru no hikari, silhouette, kara no kokoro, then good ass endings like freedom, nagareboshi, ao no lullaby, then some other still very good openings like distance, heros come back, closer, newsong etc. All in all Shippuden probably has the most consistently good openings of any anime ever, maybe black clover is arguable for great openings but black clover has some absolute stinkers like op 9 and 13, same goes for MHA with some goats but stinkers like op 7 and op 5

I think Japanese is a slightly higher pitch or something. I don’t know. I’m not a speech expert. Lol But I actually think the dub voice actors match it (mostly) It’s just the words don’t match. And also words in different languages have different syllables so it’s just hard to translate on top of it all. I really just think with whatever subject, we need to stop trying to match the original language and just be authentic to whatever the dub language is but keeping in mind the original script obviously. Like the way we talk, our voices, our tones and regional sounds. Anime is super performative and extra (random cute Japanese girl sounds all Kawaii or some shit that we all accept as normal) It’s entertainment. So I think a lot of westerners are Infatuated with it. Like I said in my last comment, I think they need to not emulate and just take the source material and make it fit for whatever audience. I think there’s an inherent bias when you only listen to sub on your first watch for one, and for two the voice actors you have heard before kind of “ruin” it for you because all you hear are the characters or personas you were first introduced to before you watched naruto i.e. principal perry.

the dub just hasa lot harder of a job, if a direct translation makes the sentence too long its unusable, if the translation even has the emphasis in the wrong part of the sentence it sounds wrong. like the almighty push example, i 100% agree the english doesnt have the same strained delivery, but i also think its just easier to have that strained sound in "tensei" than in "push".

I have watched it all on both versions and most of the big moments are better in dub for me. Especially the villains: Pain, Madara, Obito, Itachi, Orochimaru are better in dub for me. So are Gaara and Kakashi. Naruto is better in sub, easily. While Sasuke is amazing in both. Jiraiya is also nearly identical in both for me. Also suggesstions for part 2: Pain's Cycle of Hatred speech, Madara's wake up to reality, Gaara's 4th Ninja War Speech, Itachi's reality speech and his I will love you always scene, Obito's everyone shall turn up just like me speech, Kakashi vs Obito ending but mostly Kakashi's speech there, Guy's 8th gate opening and Sasuke vs Naruto final fight. I also think that Naruto's goodbye to Minato is a really good performance, despite me not really liking Naruto's english voice.

Also just to see how phonetically different they are. Shinra Tensei has 4 syllables, Almighty Push has 3, even though it is supposed to be the same phrase. So you can not put the same cadence and strain in Push as you do in Ten-sei. I think they could have vastly improved that by just not translating it, since it is supposed to be a name and there's no need to translate names.

Im sorry, but ive said it before and i will always say it. Japanese VAs really put their souls into it. Just check some of Eren or Levi behind the scenes and you'll see the VA saying "let me hear it, lets redo it, i want to try a different voice/feeling etc..", but in english, (in my experience at least) all i hear is script reading or theatrical acting. But its mostly the script reading and i just cant listen to that.. I'll give you a big example.. there's this guy on youtube MrBallen and he's just telling stories.. and i love listening to his stories. It's like listening to your grandpa or uncle, as a kid, telling stories. But now he started doing podcasts or story reading and it just sounds so damn different from the normal story telling. You can literally hear that he's reading it instead of delivering it. That's the diff between Sub and Dub for me.

If you’re not watching Boruto (don’t recommend watching it) there are two scenes worth it. One is THAT fight everyone talks about and the other is an episode with an emotional end credit scene. Probably the 2 best moments of Boruto for me

I think attacks like 'Almighty Push' where the attack doesn't stay the japanese word is what can ruin it. The foreign word/pronunciation always sounds way cooler. The tone is so different in the attack in that clip toooo. I like that there is almost a 'sadness' to the japanese attack, like he wouldnt want to but its what has to be done but its still hard.

I mean, yeah, the translators and script writers had to come up with a name that would fit the 4 syllables given. Also, since it was aimed at kids/young folks, it had to be simple too. "神羅天征/Shinra Tensei" is literally "Heavenly Subjugation of the Omnipresent God". I'm sorry but any kid/teenager watching in the US going to school in the US? They are not gonna understand what that means.

I understand Japanese, literally watched all kinds of Japanese media (news, tv shows, dramas, movies, anime, music shows, etc) for over a decade now and even if English VAs work hard, the Japanese VAs have always worked harder and will do it better. I mean, aura is nice and all, but there's gotta more behind it. 💁🏾‍♀️

I like both sub and dub. I haven't watched part 2 yet, but I think you should have included some funny scenes. Some of the serious stuff sounds better in sub, and dub can be hit or miss because they do have to shorten to dialogue to match with the lip movement.

I also prefer subbed Deku, but Justin Briner did a phenomenal job for 10 years as Izuku. He only improved with time. his voice acting against Shigi in season 8 is just a top tier dubbed performance.
