One of the main reasons why this ASL backstory is after Marineford, is because there are a lot of red flags for Ace in this backstory which would make his death seem inevitable if it was placed before/during Marineford. The other main reason is like you guys said, it's important for Luffy's current mental state and what he's going through.

Ive always found it very interesting how we perceive Luffy to be a childish character when he was older, but back in this time, you can really see exactly what he grew from and where his maturity developed. I also think showing the backstory after makes it feel much heavier knowing Ace isn't alive and seeing how much he meant to Luffy hurts💔 And what hurts even more is that we're progressively seeing how Luffy (Sabo too) became Ace's will to live and it reflects back to present how Ace didn't hesitant one second to save Luffy in exchange for his life. Back in Alabasta Ace would say to the crew things like, "Thanks for watching over Luffy, I know he's a handful" or when Luffy and Mr.3 freed him he said "You've always been like this, Luffy. You never even listened to me and always done crazy things". And now watching this backstory makes me cry even more once you put it together. Ace and Sabo was always protecting Luffy as the older brother, and Luffy was always the unhinged crybaby younger brother😂 The backstory is definitely perfectly placed

But I get the point about how all the damage Luffy absorbs without complaint was taken by Kuma and turned into pain for Zoro. It wouldnt rly make sense if Zoro felt the pain from Luffy but Luffy never felt it. But yeah if a hammer hits Luffy and he feels nothing and bounces it off, it would make sense for a punch to also be blunted. I think maybe an attack from a punch/kick typically has some sharpness to it even if it comes from splinters or rocks from what he smacks into

to clarify about brute force attacks (punches, kicks, and such) on luffy, hes said multiple times that those things dont work on him! i do imagine theres some sense of cumulative damage still, or a vague pain indicator of course, but those things on their own will never be fatal or enough to slow him down too much - this is part of his 'rubber' property. on the other end of that hes still susceptible to all sorts of piercing and slicing attacks - note how bluejam had to put on the spiked gloves to start doing real damage to him. theres also been comments in the past of garps (and then sentomarus) hits being painful to him despite his devil fruit! and then things like smokers jutte being way more effective bcuz of sea prism stone on the end and what not, but yeah, jacks not wrong lol - majority of the damage repelled by kuma likely has much more to do with all the other damage types hes taken and was also stated to include his 'fatigue' which had to have been immense on its own already, seeing as luffy was/is always pushing himself past his own limits

497-499 is a mix of canon and filler, but the filler scenes are great and fit so naturally that you wouldn't even know they were filler unless someone said so. Doing eps 497-499 in the same batch would be a good move but it's up to the Geks.

i was under the impression that only sword/sharp attacks, some devil fruits, and haki could hurt luffy. since he deflects cannon balls and bullets, seemingly without any pain or repercussions, i always thought punches didn’t hurt him. you can cut rubber, but you can’t punch it to damage it (i think)? tbh oda might’ve changed things or toei might’ve. i’d actually love to know the real answer lol

“being alone is more painful than being hurt” followed immediately by ace’s “is it hard for you without me? so you want me to live” HAS ME SOBBING. this scene is exactly why i think this arc was perfectly placed. hearing luffy say he fears being alone more than pain, knowing he just lost his brother and doesn’t know where his crew is, is incredibly tragic, but only because we have hindsight from the previous arcs. if we didn’t know ace’s fate before this flashback none of it would hit as hard. we learned about ace’s struggle with self-worth in marineford, so seeing him find a reason to live in luffy—knowing he dies to save the person who gave him worth, his reason to live—makes this scene hit so much harder emotionally than if it had been placed before ace’s death

You’re right, he only had Garp, the Mayor, and Makino. Since Garp has to go away sometimes, Luffy only had those 2. But even so, they couldn’t fill that hole which made him feel so alone. Meeting Ace and Sabo was definitely a blessing to Luffy 🥹❤️‍🩹

Adding to Jacks and Cannons debate on Luffy taking damage or not. Luffy is resistant to blunt attacks (punches, kicks, clubs) but not immune. He gets punched throughout the whole story and if theyre strong people, it will hurt him always. He just takes less damage than a person who isnt rubber would take. I'd say i like how Luffy is sort of kept a bit myserious for the viewer. When we meet Luffy he's very open and honest, in that sense, what you see is what you get with him. Luffy is not the kind to look back or linger about his companions' past or his own, so he keeps some stuff to himself but mainly cause he's just not asked really. He didn't say he has a brother, he didn't say he knew about Ace's father, nor about Garp being a vice admiral and his grandfather... It's sort of funny he knows but the audience doesn't and he doesn't really hide them it's just that is not something that would change who he is

Eps 497-499 adapt the 4 page ASL montage of chapter 585. Each panel in the montage is a single moment, but the anime expands those moments into actual scenes to cover those 3 episodes. So while it's technically not entirely manga canon, it's also not really filler either. It's a disservice to the backstory to skip past them either way.

tbf, most of the confusion comes from post enies lobby where sanji says why are you in pain, its just a normal punch when garp punches him with haki, implying that regular punches shouldnt hurt him

I think the backstory is perfectly placed. I think Luffy didn't need a backstory early in the story because we already knew his motivation, personality, and we got a small taste of his upbringing with the Shanks flashback. It left us with some questions, but still satisfaction. I also think any MC doesn't need a backstory early in their story if the plot is structured well. It's the same with my fav MC and one of the greatest characters ever, Gintoki from Gintama (best anime ever). So getting the full Luffy flashback now when he's at his lowest is perfect, especially when Ace is an important part of his backstory.

yeah he definitely was hurt by Giant Moria stomping on him inside the box but the fruit saved him from being crushed to dust. Also a lot of the damage Kuma expelled from his body was from spamming gear 2 which puts a lot of strain on his body. Then there's him taking in the 100 shadows power which gave him more power than his body could handle kinda like Deku.

Luffy said something like it hurt when he gets punched by Garp, and the crew is shocked, but that's because of Haki. And Kuma repelled his pain and gave it to zoro. The stuff about Luffy not taking damage from blunt attacks is just very inconsistent. I mean just in the previous episode the bluejam guy hit Luffy with a full on big ass hammer and it did nothing to Luffy. Yet in this episode a kick of Ace hurt Luffy quite clearly. It's very inconsistent.

I remember when he got shot at some point in East Blue he said, it doesn't work, but it still hurts or is annoying. So I think he definitely feels them. As he grew older he just maxed out in resistance so it makes sense that he feels it more when he is younger.

When Garp hit Luffy, all the crew members were shocked that Luffy was hurt by what seemed like a normal attack. Normally, a regular attack cannot hurt Luffy because his body is made of rubber. For example, at the beginning of the story, when Alvida hit Luffy with a mace, it didn’t hurt him at all, and Luffy said it was because his body was rubber. Garp’s “fists of love,” as he calls them, injured Luffy because he was using Haki.
