No problem Geks! I think the initial panic in the comments came from the fear of another sad kdrama leading to another break, so people were hoping you’d pick something fully wholesome this time. But a lot of people seem to have come around since then because this show is really loved. More than anything, I just hope you guys can enjoy the journey without going in full of dread because of those comments. It’s a beautiful story and not like anything you’ve watched before, and not the type of show you usually see a group of guys reacting to, which is really refreshing. It does have some heavy moments, but overall it’s very wholesome. The characters really grow on you, and the story is simple but poetic, touching on life, sacrifice, relationships, and how the good moments make the hard ones worth it. I think with the comments helping explain some of the cultural contexts, you’ll really enjoy this show and take a lot away from it :)

The narrative addresses heavy themes and topics which makes for an intense and emotional watch. It's bittersweet because it's an authentic depiction of life. You get beauty and pain. imo it's one of the best storytelling with themes of resilience, perseverance, and community ✨️

Age is calculated a little differently in Korea, babies are considered 1 year old when they are born (they account for time in the womb) and everyone turns a year older on Jan 1st rather than their birthday. So Korean ages and international ages are a bit different. So age 19/18 in Korea is probably what we would recognize as 17/16. They are minors at this time. You are considered an adult at age 19 (international age) in Korea, used to be 20.

Being the eldest son/grandson was extremely important to all families. I know it’s maddening to see that Ae-sun was treated so differently by her uncle than her male cousin, but it was what the culture was. I had firsthand experience as a kid bc my grandparents, who were in their 30’s during Ae-sun’s time, wouldn’t even make my younger brother do any chores in the house when we were growing up. In this show there is no black and white. I can find certain actions annoying in the moment but I can never really judge them for it. Ae-sun dared to have a strong personality, to be difficult and "annoying" in a time when a woman's value was equal to that of a cow. Again, to each their own opinion and this doesn't mean she should have a pass at being mean to Gwan-sik but my guy could always leave really, nobody's forcing him. Ae-sun feels that the only thing she has left is her pride which can cause her to be blunt but it's also what has allowed her to not become the doormat of her family. She's just a kid really

First time watching: This story reminds a lot of the book Pachinko (which is actually a tv series now maybe if you guys checked it out someday it's really good) like going back in time telling her lifestory especially with the first episode with her mum. Anyways i really really like this show, i have a feeling that Gwan-sik is not the current husband we see, but I'm really hoping i'm wrong. Ae-sun gives tsundere vibes she's very sassy but she loves Gwan-sik just as much he loves her it's cute 😊

Some factoids about this show that might be useful for you guys to know: Im Sangchoon, the screenwriter* of this show, is considered unusual amongst her peers with respect to her near-complete anonymity. Outside of her rough age range and gender, genuinely nothing is known about her as a person, while her name is a pseudonym. Some of her previous works include “Fight My Way” and “When the Camellia Blooms”— the former got a lot of love from both Koreans and international viewers, and the latter retains a dedicated fanbase to this day. Im Sangchoon may not be my personal favorite screenwriter (that title goes to Park Haeyoung, the screenwriter of “Another Miss Oh,” “My Mister,” and “My Liberation Notes”), but her writing has garnered the reputation it has for a reason. She’s 100% a force to be reckoned with and I can’t commend her enough. Kim Wonseok, this show’s director, has been around since the early 2000’s, and is known for producing some of the most critically acclaimed KDramas in recent memory. These include “Signal,” “My Mister,” and of course, “Misaeng: The Incomplete Life” (my personal goat and favorite show of all time, though I HIGHLY recommend all three). As an aside, IU, Aesun’s actress, was the lead of “My Mister” and really cemented her acting chops through that role. And made me cry many many many tears… Anyway. When “When Life Gives You Tangerines” was released, a very small number of critics expressed their concern that the show had some 신파 elements (pronounced shin-pa, which basically describes works of media that are designed to be emotional with little narrative substance). But imo, not a single emotional moment in this show in unearned or contrived. You won’t be disappointed. Basically what I’m trying to say is that this show is the culmination of perhaps the most anticipated collaborations of the past few years. And boy did it deliver lol *Where western shows generally make use of multiple screenwriters and writing assistants who collaborate on scripts throughout pre-production, most KDrama narratives are created by one 각본가 (scriptwriter) who writes everything from start to finish. There are exceptions obviously (e.g., the Hong sisters), but that tends to be the norm.

This episode was so frikin epic and romantic, the entire scene of their first kiss was so beautiful. The two main characters are written with so much care (so far), and I love when a character’s characterization feels palpable. All the details they’ve shown about Gwan-sik to let us know how much he loves Ae-sun are so wholesome. He doesn’t seem to have any ambition besides protecting and helping her. He’s always adjusting to her epic nature, and I wonder if that will eventually lead to him developing desires of his own. Ae-sun, on the other hand, has so much guts. She’s witty and clings to her dreams like no one else, despite her disadvantages (being a girl in jeju). I love how different they are and how much they go out of their ways to be with each other, just because of love. This show is amazing so far. I’ll try to watch it along with you guys, but the suspense about whether they’ll end up together or not is killing me lmao😭

someone probably mentioned this, but i'll say it anyway hahaha. koreans count age differently so, in korea you're already 1 year old when you're born and you also turn one more year every january 1st. in that scene on the boat they're 19 in korean age, but actually internationally only 17!!

I love how they portray Gwan-sik and Ae-sun as awkward teens with shy little crushes. It feels so genuine. Before social media, first loves were quiet and innocent like them, not over-sexualized and mature in the way tv portrays it now. It’s really sweet.

12:07 — Yes we do jump to the future briefly here, it says the date in the bottom right corner is 1993. They purposefully don’t show us who Ae-sun ends up marrying. Make sure to pay attention to those when it jumps back and forth!

Back then in Korea, teens (especially girls) running away was a common social issue. Many were trying to escape poverty, strict family expectations, or limited life options, but it was extremely taboo. Family reputation was everything, so an underage, unmarried girl running off with a boy could seriously damage Ae-sun and her family’s social standing. So this isn’t just romantic rebellion but a huge scandal at the time.

Ae-sun is a brat right now, but I understand her. She grew up with her mom’s dream of escaping the island, going to Seoul, and living a stable life instead of repeating a cycle of poverty. Being with Gwan-sik would mean staying on the island and giving up that dream, so she pushes him away even though she likes him. She also picked up her mom’s feisty personality and was neglected by her father’s side, which is why she can come off bratty and whiny early on. She definitely grows a lot, and I think you’ll understand her more as the story goes on.

Okay some stuff to understand for future episodes: The Narrator is Ae-sun's daughter. Basically, our main girl's daughter from the future. We follow her storytelling of her parent's life. Also, our main girl plays 2 roles in this show. She is Ae-sun from the 90s which we know so far. and she will also play the role of Ae-sun's daughter in the future, and older Ae-sun herself will be played by another actress in the future

I think her being bratty is coming from the fact that if she married him it would mean being stuck there forever and just continuing her shitty life and following in the footsteps of her mom. So it’s not that she’s like talking shit about him but more so how it’s unfair that the boy she loves would also be her downfall and giving up on her dreams and breaking a cycle. Thats the impression I’m getting anyways haha. It seems running away is a pretty big deal, but also I see the step mom and dad kind of respect it in a way. Because it seems a lot of them gave up on dreams of having a better life a long time ago, so kind of like a “haha kids” type of attitude. Like living vicariously through them for a moment.

I also think she's in an interesting situation all round. She has no friends, so it him, he's her friend and the person she holds romantic interest for. She doesn't have that friendly outlet for her frustrations and qualms like a normal person would. How I see it? When she's expressing her frustration at her situation and her ending up with him. I think she's talking to him as her friend.. and I think he gets that. He recites nostalgia over and over cause it's the only way he knows how to show he's worthy. He doesn't have dreams or a peasant upbringing to overcome*(at least not that we know).. so she's the only thing he's passionate about. I actually like that he's almost devout about her. It's real cute.
