I'm just here to tell Mckay I love him again, I'll be back to watch the video later 🫶🏻🤣

I'm not ready for this episode, I'm gonna walk my 2 dogs first before this episode upsets me.

Every character that has gone against the Church has done so in the search of their version of “truth”. Like Cannon, I feel bad for Nowak b/c he just seems misguided vs truly evil like the bishops son. I hope this somehow leads him to believe in heliocentrism so he can realize his daughter wasn’t a devil

Melizé

Why were you not loving him before? 😂

Chosos Wife

No I mean this is just another comment expressing it 🤣

Over half way is crazy. Love that this is such a deeper vibe

is it... my turn to do the laundry?

Nowaks complicated, and I love the discussion. But he has had no qualms with the torture. Like the one scene where he gets the ball out of the tree, and then that kid walks in on his dad being tortured and Nowaks like "oh this is your family lol". Like he hasn't shown a lot of guilt or anything. But he's very human. hes a loving father. He does believe he's doing the right thing.

its named "innovation"

“Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.” - Abraham Lincoln Nowak isn't inherently evil or good; his circumstances and his position of power makes him such a grey character in this show. What Cannon is mentioning at the end about Nowak can be explained by the infamous Stanford Prison Experiment. In that experiment, ordinary people given authority slowly became cruel, not because they were monsters, but because the system around them rewarded it. In the same way, Nowak exists inside an echo chamber where suppression is framed as duty and righteousness. When someone truly believes harsh actions are necessary for the “greater good,” morality quietly bends to the role they are playing. That is what makes him unsettling — not a villain, but a man shaped by the gravity of the system he serves. Also, the ost at the end is called "innovation" by Kensuke Ushio (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=werUpQKoQ6U)

This show is cooking now. And this is what anime does: it somehow gets you to love or question how you really feel about someone, in this case, it would be Nowak. What will this priest do now that he has the 60 pages of his research on the beggars' heads? I'm also curious about how Nowak's daughter will come into play again if she does.

I love the discussion at end in regards to Nowaks morality. I definitely can see where McKay is coming from, but I lean with Cannon on this. I don't believe that Nowak is a terrible person, has he done monstrous things? Without a doubt. But it's like Cannon said, he truly thinks he's doing the right thing and is doing God's work. He doesn't seem like he derives any pleasure out of it and goes so far as to keep it away from his daughter. Like this is a necessity to him in regards to his faith and the way he crashed out on Jolenta shows how big on the faith he is. Let's not forget that both Badeni and Oczy aren't clean handed either. Badeni killed his friend over something extremely petty and Oczy was a hired gun who killed people for money. Does that make them both terrible people as well? It's very nuanced. We side with Oczy and Badeni because they're the protags, but they're both murderers as well. We see their progression and see them change through their story arc so we see that they're not super evil people and they died for their beliefs. I think Nowak is the same, I think he is just on the opposite end of the spectrum.

Miitei

I don't particularly think Nowak is a bad nor good person, he is just a person that does what he does because of his faith and his beliefs, the same as every MC we have had so far. And just to remember that Oczy also used to kill people for money, and Badeni killed someone too, neither of the 3 enjoyed doing it we have seen that. A bad person for me is someone doing bad things because they want to fully known is bad, like Antony for example.

GRABOWSKI My freaking GOAT!!!! Few anime can make you "hate" one character who literally killed 3 main characters and then make you care for him in just the next episode.. Nowak is such a great character.

Allsports Athletics

Also the song is called "Innovation" but you need to search it on youtube as "drumless version" because the official OST added drums to the epic part.

This soundtrack at the end kinda reminds of the „Deep Stone Lullaby“ from the deepstone crypt raid in Destiny 2. idk how to explain but I get the same feeling of Inspiration and longing for something from these two soundtracks, absolute bangers.

In my opinion, Nowak is a victim of "collective insanity." Normally, if you got in a plane, flew it to another country, and dropped bombs, that would not be considered a "sane" thing for a human to do. But during wartime, it becomes normal, even expected, celebrated. War causes a "collective insanity" among the people involved in it. People who might genuinely be considered good, with upstanding morals, can get sucked into this. "Well, of course, I don't support killing civilians, but we had to defeat the nazis, so we had to drop bombs on their cities." It's quite likely that, when you read this, you agreed with the sentiment. And that's may or may not necessarily be a bad thing, but it's important to recognize what's happening mentally there. In the medieval period, one could argue that a collective insanity of the time was the belief that "It's good for the church to torture and kill people who don't follow Catholic dogma." Nowak is not an evil man, at least according to a traditional definition of evil. He doesn't relish torture. He isn't sadistic. He does what he does because he genuinely, *genuinely* believes he's making the world a safer place for his daughter. And he believes this because it's what he's been brought up to believe, because it's what society around him believes. Neither does he dismiss outright the spirit of those before him. I think part of him respected Rafal, and he also showed genuine curiosity in Oczy's view on heresy. He tries to understand, but he's too deep in his belief to do so. But it's the trying that makes him sympathetic. Now, you could argue that ignorant evil is just as bad, that he's still evil according to other definitions of "evil", but my point is: to me, Nowak is a product of the world he inhabits. If you put him in the 20th century, I don't believe he would become a serial killer. He might just become a loving family man.

Don't recommend this show to the Timothee Chalamet's of the world, they wouldn't get it 🥴

I will contain my thoughts on characters for now. Excited to see your reactions to what’s to come.

DonDuh103

I’m actually curious if someone actually did that in the past?

Interesting discussion! I feel like judging a person by their intent makes sense in normal situations, though you would have questions at the extremes. For example, a doctor who tries to perform life-saving surgeries with no proper training - the intentions are there, but how many patients would have to die before his judgement makes him a bad person? A popular perspective is that your intent matters only up to the point where you should have reasonably known better (negligence). The thing is, by that metric, I think Novak is a lot less innocent than many of the other inquisitors in the show. They may have killed and burned people at the stake, but as the primary interrogator actually speaking to pagans, Novak is the one who had the MOST opportunities to question his biases and moral certainties. There were many people who shifted their belief systems coming off much briefer encounters: Count Piast, the goat young Inquisitor, Badeni's fellow priest. Novak has had decades of conversations with the people he hurts, and still, he told Oczy he couldn't understand him. I don't truly see him as a bad person, but it is an interesting question - at what point does justification or faith turn into negligence? Was there a point where he should have reasonably known better? (These are hypothetical questions since I think it's hard to give an opinion until you've finished the series. Once again, thanks for the awesome discussions, Geks!)

NANDO DEMO (even though they resent it right now lol)

Btw love Cannon's shoutout to the music :) I think I only love all the death/upsetting scenes so much because it's the worst thing you've ever seen scored to the prettiest music and sky, and that brings a tiny measure of closure lol

The ending music is soooooooo goooooood. Love that ending scene, the feeling it leaves is something else.

I would say that by the end of the series, we have a more logical explanation for the nuanced argument of who’s “more right” or “less wrong”. At least within the context of this series. I personally don’t think Nowak is bad person, with one glaring reason being that the church, or at least this version of it, doesn’t promote self agency in any way, and Nowak hasn’t been in a situation in his past it seems that would promote that thought process either. So I feel like he would be almost incapable of being able to question things for himself, without seeing it for himself, like all the other protagonists have, due to their own individual circumstances.

The fact that all my favorite episodes are the ones to come is insane🤣 We gonna be Orbing so hard 🔥

Jack's comment in the outro about "what if one of them died" made me chuckle. Not gonna spoil but Badeny was not a good nor great but definitely a clever man.

Using current military tortures is such a bad example, like how do you know they do it for the right reasons? Wouldn’t thinking this make us the same as all the regular people in the show who support the inquisitor tortures
