Then they showed Gwang-shik remembering her words while seeing her in the kitchen, saying goodbye but smiling as she watches their daughter. That scene broke me. And I know it broke Gwang-shik too, because he realized his wife ended up spending her life in the kitchen, something she never wished for😣😣

🍊 So heartwarming seeing the geks really locked in and noticing even the small details like the whistle and Geum-myeong standing up for herself. 🥰 I knew they will love Ae-sun's kesekiya scene 🤣 was so excited for them to see it. Also yes its so crazy they wanted Geum-myeong to start learning how to dive and make a living at 6 years old. Completely valid crash out! It's kinda sad Geum-myeong seems to be lashing out to her mom, just like what Carter was saying.. Yup like Carter said, you'll never understand some things until you go through life no matter how much your parents try to teach you. If Ae-sun had her problems then Geum-young has to deal with the capitalistic expectations of modern day South Korea (which is fascinating that it only took 1 generation for so much progress and is the clue to many of SK's current issues). But like Ae-sun said, it is important to understand that even if she didn't manage to fullfil all her wishes, she was still happy. Idk I feel like this drama really drives home that a man is not an island and what helps you get through life is having loving people around you

I love how Gwansik and Aesun are both each other's anchor no matter what is going in their life. They both face it head on with all the strength and will they possibly have. It makes believe in true love even though, I'm a bit cynical. I can also be a hopeless romantic at times as well. Wow those flashbacks were done beautifully and empathized just how much they've been through along their journey and seeing it from all angles from the different time periods. I'm in awe.... This show is such a healing drama but also life affirming. It makes you realize how different things were especially in another culture where expecations are higher and you're constantly held on such a high pedestal where you never feel good enough. It makes me think how different my life would have been if I had lived in Korea instead of the U.S. It would of been a whole another world where I would have been a different person. It's fun learning about more about my roots. But anyway, their little family is precious and the daughter is sooo stinking cute! Goshhh I'm melting. Korean actors are immensely talented. They are able to show so much with their eyes, posture, body language, and voice. It keeps you engaged and wanting to know more. And it makes you feel as if you're almost living through their experiences from their lenses. Goodness sorry for the long comment guys. But it's crazy how much K-dramas cause me to reflect, ponder, and understand about human emotions and connections and what part each of them hold in significance toward the other.

Aghhh Geum myeong (aesun’s daughter) was definitely projecting on her after meeting her bfs mother. Along by being triggered by the stuck window and aesun overwhelming her about the shoes she bought. Inevitably she took it out on her which made her say the words she regretted. This is so asian culture not saying sorry but gifting her the shoes. 🥹 The way she said, “breaking mom’s heart, breaks mine” and “parents dwell in what they couldn’t give to their kids and kids resent their parents for what they didn’t have”. ❤️‍🩹 its really an unfair cycle of life and its so real. We know she’s not a spoil brat bc she stood firm when meeting the bfs mother. But she does have some rooted resentment and as she says emptiness.

Ahhh there’s so much symbolism in this show. What stood out the most to me is the shoes 👟 the way Aesun took off her shoes when the grandma/ shaman asked her to bless geum-myeong and she moved her shoes to the ground along her daughters representing her place in the house. And after they move out of the house, aesun, gwansik, geom myeong, their shoes where all in the same row like a equal family😮‍💨 Also, why they eat in two separate tables. One table was for the head of the house which is the shaman, dad, and gwansik and the other table where the rest of the house. Gwansik switching sides is a big move, like “he wont be above his wife” thats why they were so shocked or like insulted?

First time watching: Coming off of episode 3 i'm so happy Ae-sun and Gwan-sik stuck together and seeing their baby made me tear up so bad and now they're happy in their own way. In certain cultures it's customary to take that type of abuse because you need to respect your elders but i'm so glad Ae-sun stood her ground and Gwan-sik said F that. He is now the standard and i won't have anything else lol. I also noticed with the fishing guy his sons were replicating his behaviour when they were playfighting which was scary cause we see what was nearly Ae-sun's life had she not ran for Gwan-sik day. I'm tempted to watch ahead but i'm enjoying the watch along :)

Omg the intro is so random and hilarious I love you guys lmao our islands and locations are often mispronounced because the accurate Hawaiian language spelling isn't used officially. When you see the okina (') you pause, it's purpose is to separate sounds. Ok Carter it's Kaa nay o hay for Kāne'ohe and lah ee eh for Lā'ie. Waimea is why may uh and even Hawai'i is mispronounced a lot. I always hear huh why ee/hah whyee but it's accurate pronunciation is with a soft v so it's ha-vai-ee. W Carter you get it but I'm disappointed with Cannon lol It's cool that you mention Hale'iwa (huh lay ee vah) because North Shore has the best beaches and I was just there all morning surfing lol I can't picture yall surfing so maybe yall were there for another reason hahaha I'm gonna assume with yall being Mormon that yall are familiar with Lā'ie because it's a predominantly Morman community and the LDS church. In Korean culture (and i'm sure in other cultures), traditionally, a daughter marrying into another family is like leaving your birth family and becoming a part of the husband's family - it's very patriarchal and the mother in law is kinda like the daughter-in-law's overseer. So there's been a lot of familial abuse from mother-in-laws because they're like the "boss" of the daughter-in-laws, and that trauma gets passed down. Thankfully, Korea has been breaking out of that for the past couple of decades, but there are still subtler, or not as severe, expectations on daughter-in-laws, and I'm sure there are traditional families in Korea that are still like that. One of my friend's fiance's mom is like that lol (idk how she does it). That's kind of also why the grandma is also praying for a son, because when you have a daughter, the daughter eventually "leaves" the family.

Seeing how gwansik’s mother treated Ae-sun made me think about how he and ae-sun’s mother would interact. I hope we get some scenes of them sharing a wholesome moment in the past

As an eldest of 3 daughters in a conservative family, where both of my parents grew up poor and being the first woman in my family that have broken traditions like travelling abroad by myself, not getting married by 20 and having a job that can fully support myself and my family if needed, this show makes me cry every episode. My grandma walked, so my mom could run, to allow me to fly. And even though my grandma would be so against of how I live, if she was still alive. I hope my granddaughters would be as grateful to me, as I am to her. P.S. Knowing that men like Gwansik are 1 in a million is sad though.

Speaking as a Korean, 남아선호사상 (aka “preference for sons” ideology) has been deeply ingrained in our societal structure for a long time. Its influence has become far less pronounced in the 21st century obviously, but you can still see it manifest in familial dynamics in this toxic cycle of misogyny. Female solidarity is hard to foster in an environment that encourages the opposite. Women like Gwansik’s mother were themselves mistreated by their mother-in-laws, noticed how their lot improved after they gave birth to sons, and therefore learned to view their sons as proxies for their own social position. A son is his mother’s pride, her joy, her everything. So when this son inevitably forms his own family, his mother ironically perpetuates the same injustices that she experienced against her own daughter-in-law. Aesun’s full name is Oh Aesun, not Yang Aesun; although the retention of one’s name after marriage may be perceived as empowering in the West (especially in light of “maiden names” as a concept), in the East, the practice has historically functioned to ensure that women can never truly ‘belong’ in their husband’s family. Gwan-sik turning around and eating at Ae-sun’s table is indeed a really big deal. In the traditional household setup, the men of the family sit with the elders at the main table (dad and grandmother), while the women and people who married into the family eat separately. Meals in traditional Korean families were very hierarchical, with elders and male heads of the household given priority. So him turning his back on that table and choosing to sit with Ae-sun just so he could feed them more food was a bold and meaningful gesture for the time.

25:22 — I think you guys might’ve missed an important line here while discussing: “Always smiling brightly, Ae-sun spent her entire twenties in that cramped kitchen.” It further confirms and acknowledges that Ae-sun gave up her dreams and spent her whole youth working as a maid, yet she still stayed positive and smiled through it all. It really adds a lot to how strong her character is, being happy with the little things despite her dreams not coming true. I love this scene and I think Ae-sun is truly so inspiring.

It’s so crazy seeing Ae-sun visit the wife of the guy she almost married and realizing that could’ve been her life. Raising his obnoxious boys, getting beaten, and being treated like she was only there to be a mother with no love. It really puts things into perspective. Like McKay said, they might not be rich in money but they’re rich in life.

The captain especially targets Gwan-sik and beats him because he still holds a grudge against Ae-sun for not marrying him. He also knows Gwan-sik is desperate for work and doesn’t have the power to fight back, so he’s forced to keep his head down and endure it. Luckily Ae-sun stands up and saves him!

I can see the sincerity in your facial expressions where you're absorbing what you're seeing...even the quieter moments. For the bit with Geummyoung asking Aesun if she didn’t regret marrying Gwansik: she’s not actually being ungrateful— the focus of her comment isn’t really on the marriage but on her mom’s suffering (and inability to frequently wear the “floral patterns” she likes so much). It’s a pretty common sentiment a lot of Korean daughters have towards their moms, bc they hate seeing them not living up to their full potential and wish they could’ve achieved everything they wanted to achieve.
