We don't know what to think

You know, this long, grueling 12 days without a Sherlock reaction has really put things into perspective for me… I’m finally starting to understand what Watson must've been feeling during that 2-year period after Sherlock faked his death.

Sam M

The time has come

Sam M

I tend to agree with Cannons take about the Magnussen shooting. I didn't hate it, but it seems they made the decision to downplay Sherlocks pure logic method of problem solving (which is core to the identity of Sherlock) in service of showing how far he's come in caring for his friends. For general story writing this is fine, but this is specifically a Sherlock story and I think his notorious identity matters in how they choose to resolve a plot.

DonDuh103

The back and forth of look Sherlock didn’t do it, oh wait they faked it😂😂

Ella

I’ve been deprived lol. Thank you for uploading!

malealoo

I always hate cheating plotlines honestly so not a fan of this one. Definitely soured my view of John.

Bob

if you remember in the initial episodes, John had a lot of girlfriends and in a short period of time too, also would mix them up and flirt with the women who came to pick him up in the jaguar (easier cause thats his weakness). so the flirting and texting the ginger women (E) was unfortunate but not really out of character, i would say. its just that we forget how he was in the first season! John had signs.

JulioLG

We're baaaack baby I don't think John has any excuse for what he did. Happily married, newborn girl, c'mon man. Also it is "supposed" to have been a mistake from Sherlock to start pushing the lady's buttons just out of arrogance, or also even to drag the pointing gun to him to protect Mary, buuut... Even with that understanding when I og watched this ep I really felt the writing went down several steps from previous seasons, until the point of characters losing coherence. And we came from the Magnussen shot thing so... That's why I stated that end of season 2 was the peak IMO. Season 3 slightly below but season 4 starts the serious fall of the show writing quality. We'll see at the end what you guys think overall.

Mack

Forgot that this show takes 2hrs long

Josh

I think fair points by all were made in the opening. IMO the outplay with 3x3 though was Sherlock being able to goad a very careful Magnussen into revealing his most prized secret--one that has kept him safe so far--that the "Vaults" don't actually exist as everyone assumes. That's where Sherlock "wins". I don't think the Magnussen shooting is a cop-out but I can see why someone might find it unsatisfying. I agree with everyone's opinion on 4x1.

Sam M

Yeah I honestly would have preferred if the whole episode was more of the guy who died in the car type stuff. Marys super secret agent squad and backstory plot was never really interesting to me, plus the action scenes it entailed are not this shows strong point. The Sherlock and John back and forth dynamic, the deduction unraveling scenes and dramatic reveals are the real peaks of the show and this episode had almost none of that. Not even to mention the blight on Johns character. Definitely a mixed episode. On the bright side, this episode was the lowest rated of the season, and a couple of my favorite most memorable moments are yet to come. Despite the lower overall relative impression of the season, there’s still definitely some interesting stuff left. Looking forward to your thoughts on the rest of the season. Also, ever since this episode I could never get out of my head how terrible an idea it would be to shoot guns inside an aquarium.

DonDuh103

The episode was good but if they don’t change the direction of this with the last two episodes it’s gonna go down hill for me😑. Like if they wanted to give a flaw to John that makes him still likable but what he did when he has a wife and child doesn’t mean he’s evil but that’s the type of guy you just don’t trust anymore. Also she died because he said to go first.

DonDuh103

Maybe John sent Marry to go first cause he actually wanted her to die and was fake crying🤨🤨🤨

Anya

Carter, why are you wielding a drinking horn? 😂 Is it a sign that Vikings is next? lol Anyways, I like the whole intro discussion and Cannon is definitely trippin balls.

Anya

Yesss Jack he's the beloved butler Martin from The Parent Trap! Ofc you watched it and the others didn't haha

Koryu

Sherlock was right. Everyone from Mycroft to Lady Smallwood underestimated the old lady, including Sherlock himself. They didn't think a frail elderly woman would pose a threat, even with a gun. Him mouthing off while she's armed and pointing a gun at him says all. The only person that didn't underestimate Norbury was Mary, and she paid the price.

November2

Yes, John Watson is a character loved by many but he is not a saint or some perfect ideal he is just a normal person who showed weakness. What he did does not need to be excused, but it is not really that surprising either. People are often much simpler, weaker, and more contradictory than we want to believe 🕵🏻

ryejett

The cheating isn't excusable, but I can still definitely understand John's perspective. And yes, you guys definitely put him up on a pedestal, but the show kind of makes you do that by always putting John as the moral contast to Sherlock's character. I think it's probably done that way too so that this moment here, where he does something unfaithful, more impactful and emotional for the viewer. But yeah, we as the viewers know that John started out this series as a womanizer. We also know that he's addicted to excitement and danger and that he has a hard time controlling that impulse (think of the scene where he goes to the drug den with that crowbar, his priority wasn't actually finding his neighbors son, that was just the excuse to find a little danger). His domestic life with Mary is definitely something he wants, but it's also something that we frequently see drives him a little mad. He's not used to it, he doesn't work well with the 9-5 desk job and the comfort of the same woman in his bed every night - adding a child on top of that (which would be stressful, tedious, and probably means he's getting less action in and out of the sheets) would only exasperate his need for something risky and dangerous: Enter, a pretty face that's almost tailor designed to stroke his ego and tickle his senses, add John's inability to curb his impulses, and you get his infidelity. And John Isn't a perfectly moral character either. He committed actual murder in the first episode of the season - but we all just ignore that because it saved Sherlock's life. He's also constantly shown himself to bend or even break the rules to fit his needs, but because of the way he talks and acts, it always feels justified. And again, when standing beside Sherlock Holmes, almost everything John does looks better by comparison. But John has many Many flaws. He's easy to anger, he doesn't always forgive or forget, he's Very self serving in many litte petty ways - and, most important of all, he doesn't understand himself. He doesn't know why he does some of the things he does until Sherlock or Mary or whoever else point it out, and even then, he goes into denial before he even considers what he's heard. Add his combat PTSD on top of all of this and his gult at his own infidelity and flaws, and it becomes pretty easy to see why he immediately shuts out Sherlock as well. I say all this, by the way, with the full knowledge that I love and adore John Watson with my whole heart. For all the flaws I've listed, he also has more virtues than most people in the world today and I think that should always be considered and remembered as a reason on why we all care so much about how he feels and what he does. I think you guys will come around on him again, as well. He's a wonderfully written character and he gets all my praise, even and especially despite his mistakes.

ryejett

Agreed. That's why Sherlock told miss Hudson to use the word Norbary on him whenever she felt like he was starting to get a big head - because Sherlock realized (too late ofc) that this was the mistake. That he just saw a frail old woman and not a threat, and that cost them everything. Tbh, I kind of like the fact that it wasn't some big bad boss that gave them that reality check. It's a good reminder that life is sudden and random and ruthless, and sometimes things just happen that don't seem fair and that you can't justify or explain. It's no different from a car accident or a robbery. They lost someone to something no one there expected and now they have to learn to cope with the fact that the 'what if's won't change anything.

Anya

1:11:36 "this isn't canon in this show" "is this why we don't like the last season" "no wonder they got divorced" yall losing it to John's infidelity was funny but so valid. I like how you guys are always so strongly against cheating. I remember hating that part. Total rat behavior. "Fermented beans on molded toast" lol Jack

Anya

I love Sherlock but his arrogance and cockiness is his downfall. He just has to be smarter than everyone else. Mary could sense how unhinged Vivian was and tried to get him to stop. Count Dooku said it best "twice the pride, double the fall" Last time I watched this season was in 2017. This episode had some entertaining moments but it felt disjointed and melodramatic. I do remember liking 'The Lying Detective' (e2) a lot though. Looking forward to seeing what yall think of the season as a whole when yall are done.

McKay Carter

It’s our og horns from the early vids

Anya

Wow dash my hopes McKay. It actually hurt to see it being used so casually haha so sick though I have one similar but thicker

Jack

Yeah good point about Mary telling him to stop

McKay Carter

He is not cocky, he’s just Sherlock

Jack

Haha McKay has definitely seen it I just don’t think they heard me when I said it. Dunno if Carter and Cannon have seen it

Anya

Shercocky

Anya

Good call! Carter & Cannon lived under a rock only watching Star Wars 😂 you have to put them on musicals would love Hamilton and Wicked reactions 😀

Anya

Never watched lol but it's fitting and only heard great things about that show

Mia Malvik ⚞ • ⚟

The John unfaithful plot made me put my head through the wall. I'm completely on board with him not being flawless, but idk make him a serial killer or something, I'd feel better about that lol

Josie

Oh no

Mia Malvik ⚞ • ⚟

Ok not Carter roasting John's hair while his own looks like the weirdo in my profile pic

Dasha

while watching this episode I realized that I haven't seen season 4. now I'm mad you tricked me into watching this

Dasha

comments were saying season 4 is bad and I thought they are tripping because I didn't remember anything bad in this show😭

KimmyKim

*her. I also think John blames Sherlock because Mary returned to London on the strength of his conviction that he could keep her safe.

Anya

Same! When was the last time you watched these episodes?

Anya

😂😂 get him Mia! who even is that in your pfp? I remember you having a similar one before he always looks angry haha

Mia Malvik ⚞ • ⚟

Actually I rewatched the entire show after they dropped their reaction to the first episode 😂😂so only a few weeks ago

Mia Malvik ⚞ • ⚟

Hahah it's Megumi from the anime Jujutsu Kaisen! The previous one I had was from My Hero Academia 😂 the grumpy look just cracks me up

Anya

Ohh haha yah grumpy and petulant are better descriptions lol they're such a mood

Anya

Gahdamn 😂 it's from 2017 Mia! I don't mean to put you in my boat but yes you're with me in my damn we old boat 😭

Sari-chan

I think John feel so much guilt he can only survive if he put the blame on Sherlock. Destroying his friendship with him must be a way to hurt himself. He thinks he deserves to be alone. I just say stuff, I don't know much lol

Neti

"It has to be a sister" LMAO YALL

Sari-chan

McKay did not like Mary's past to come back but I thought it was weird that we just brush it off, like John accepted her and threw the USB but her past career had obviously consequences, you never quit being a spy/assassin for that reason. And hot take, but John was kind of player in the first season and I think even if he really tried to be a good man and be cool with Mary's secret, he still felt like he always has to be the good guy and probably wanted some thrill. Although his life between Mary and Sherlock is far from boring. Sherlock always told him that he liked the risks, death and sociopaths.

Viggoiv

KEEP WATCHING ITS WORTH IT

Anya

Oh? 26 and I think it was my bones you heard 😭

Liam

delete

Neti

bro assuming that the woman he's cheating with is his sister is insane cope, this show really has put John on a pedestal 😭😭

Nord

I think John is probably projecting his grief and guilt as anger toward Sherlock. He was just about to confess, make things right, but then she died. The grief mixed with guilt would be to much for anyone to bear; so he projects it as anger, because it's easier. Not saying it's right, but it is human.

Nrock23

Only 2 episodes left sadge

Nashi

And the apologetics roll in

Nashi

This episode was pretty dumb tbh, I can see why people say it gets bad.

izykyzi

I would have been fine introducing a new flaw for John’s character (he already had several, and it was nice. Made him human) BUT freaking WHY did they have to choose disloyalty of all things when John’s ENTIRE CHARACTER up until this point was all about loyalty. His whole personality and role in the show is as the unflinchingly loyal partner

angerina

L episode, i'm glad you guys are continuing on even though this ep was disappointing

Alex Michael

I mean, Sherlock was lowkey the reason Mary died. She was telling him not to goad Vivian just to prove a point/ to one up Vivian. But Sherlock as always had to be a smarta**, but he was not smart enough to see Vivan was an unstable, bitter, sore loser with a gun which Mary was able to see. He was being arrogant and selfish, had to show off his cleverness with no regard for the immediate consequences that could endanger both him and those around him. If I was John and I knew about the circumstances of Mary's death, how she had to save Sherlock because of his arrogance and lack of conern, I probably wouldn't forgive Sherlock either.

@Nashi Bro... learn to read, please.

❣️ Vladlena ❣️

15:28 — “John would never.” Did we watch the same show, Jack? John was a womanizer and sort of a player in the first and second seasons, so for me it wasn’t that surprising.

❣️ Vladlena ❣️

1:12:38 — “Maybe it’s like relatives.”
The denial was deep 😅 Am I the only one who thinks that John being a cheater isn’t actually random or unexplained? “I’ll take him out myself” from Cannon cracked me up 😂😂😂 and then “I’m taking myself out of this reaction”from Carter finished me!

freecostco

in reply to the intro- i agree with cannon in a sense. it wouldve been so entertaining to see them turn the tables on him by doing what he does to other people--- using existing evidence to make up exaggerated/false reports and ruin their careers--- by taking the DNA from his urine in their fireplace, his saliva from Lady Smallwood's face and from Sherlock's water, and creating some kind of crazy terrible but completely believable story, backed by evidence, using Sherlock's deductive abilities and Watson's blog. Something that would checkmate him or lose all credibility. Use all THEIR resources to take his resources and make it his word against everyone else's who has been his victim. That, or let him publish his exposés and then publish an article disproving them every time until he has no credibility and is ruined. Something like that would feel so much more satisfying. Making it so that he just kills Magnussen does feel kinda like a copout. I don't, however, think it ruins Sherlocks character or anything. I just think it was kind of a boring way to end the conflict.

freecostco

im so late its practically irrelevant at this point but i wanted to leave my two cents. this isnt a justification, but a character study. i saw lots of comments already talking about how john used to date around a lot, so i'll skip that part. i think its important to recognize that he's always been someone with a lot of pride as a war vet, as a doctor, as a man, and as sherlock's assistant. then Mary comes along, and he categorizes her as a threatless, sinless, peaceful escape from his dangerous and exciting career. after marrying her, she then also becomes his only source of reassurance in his masculinity and reliability. however, Mary dominates their marriage. She makes all the decisions and John has to do exactly as she says, even when he told her that her past didnt matter, and he tried to negotiate terms as a joke. Mary picks the name of the baby. They agreed not to take the baby on cases, but Mary says its fine, so they do. She always gets the final say. Then, once he learns she is more skilled at him in combat, sharper than him at picking up subtleties--- to the point that Sherlock invites her to join him on a case instead of John, to which John says, "Hang on, Mary's better than me?" and Sherlock responds, "She is a retired super-agent with a terrifying skill set, of course she's better." Its depicted as a joke to us, but these things are building up in John. He's already begun to see how easily replaced he is, shown in the scene where he replaces himself with a balloon, only for Sherlock to not notice for hours. They compare him to a dog, making fun of him all the while he feels excluded and half-jokes to himself, "Is it too early for a divorce?" All these things are ripping at his pride and fueling resentment toward Mary. A woman who isn't Mary notices him, and his pride shoots through the roof. It's been a while since he felt respected and seen. He wants to relish in it a little longer. I believe he sees it as an opportunity to feel important again, then realizes what the actual nature and weight of his actions is. All that said- does it make me lose respect for John? Absolutely, yes. But do I think there were all kinds of signs leading up to this? Absolutely, yes. This was not unexpected or out of character at all. He's been loyal to Sherlock all this time, but this is the first time he's really had to practice loyalty and restraint in a romantic relationship. I'm really sad things ended with Mary this way, but I will eat up every opportunity for character growth for Sherlock, and I think this is setting that up quite well. As Sherlock said at John's wedding, Sherlock just investigates and solves problems. John is the one who saves. Now Sherlock being the one who needs to save John is a beautiful circle to end the series on.

Blackeyedlily

Unfortunately, cheating when you have a new baby is not that uncommon. At least, for people who would entertain behavior like that in the first place. I think it has to do with the stress of a new baby, and the fact that any romance in the relationship is pretty much on hold at that time. And I would remind you that John was pretty much a womanizer in the early Sherlock episodes. Even his girlfriends were complaining that he couldn’t keep them straight. Although that had more to do with them thinking he was prioritizing Sherlock over them. I can see why you would be very disappointed in the character. But I do find it believable.

Eleeeeeeeee

John was completely valid is blaming Sherlock. Ultimately Sherlock's actions is what led to Mary getting killed. Not only that Sherlock made a promised that he would protect them both. Not only did Sherlock fail to do that, but the exact opposite happened he didn't just fail to protect Mary, he put Mary in a situation where Mary lost her life protecting him, the exact opposite of his promise. Insstead of making sure Mary was safe, he was dumb/careless enough to put himself in danger in a way that ends up killing Mary. It was his own stupidity that killed Mary.

Eleeeeeeeee

they werent assuming the woman hes cheating on was his sister. no they were assuming it was his sister therefore it wasnt cheating it was just platonic love.

Eleeeeeeeee

It's also funny sometimes hearing people's criticisms of a show like Sherlock about like "how did they let the bad guy win/run away/shoot them?". Its funny because I don't view a show Sherlock like that. It's a fun campy show built on intrigue, mystery, snark, wholesome banter and ribbing, with extraordinary theatrical and melodramatic dialogue, plot twists and scenarios, quirky characters and intriguing trivia. I don't expect the show to be realistic with its criminal encounters, I'm watching for the characters the plot and the puzzles not the immersion of realism into the world of crime. Does that make sense? This isn't a recreation of a WWII event, it's not supposed to be realistic, it never has been, and its not supposed to be, not in that sense anyway.
