I personally like hearing yalls perspectives as men. There's already a lot of women giving their thoughts so it's a nice balance. Gwan-sik glaze is well deserved. Glad y'all caught that he always asks her "are you happy?" only he understands her need for love and stability. Ae-sun had no choice but to be tough to survive the hardships of loss and neglect in her childhood. Her tough exterior was to protect herself and I'm glad Gwan-sik recognized how lonely and vulnerable she was and didn't give up on her. Truly a match made in heaven. 🥹❤️

I’d say Weak Hero is also super meaningful, it just presents it differently. The action is more front and center but the emotional depth is really strong, especially with the characters and their relationships. S1 was incredible, and the fact that S2 managed to stay just as intense and lovable even with a full cast change really shows how well it’s made. That being said, WLGYT definitely takes the cake for me. The emotion is so bare and it hits in a way that is more immediate and personal. I think it really just comes down to what you value more, but both shows are valid favourites!

No for sure, weak hero was really good but when life gives you tangerines is just so relatable, and you can really see people in your own lives being represented in the show, whether it's parents, siblings, or even yourself. Also, I love shows that make me cry so that's just the cherry on top

I'm soooo glad you guys are enjoying this show, its one of my favorite kdramas of all time. Please don't get discouraged by unsavory comments or feel like you need to cut down on your glaze for Gwang-sik. I've watched so many reactions to this show, and it's always nice to re-watch things from a different perspective. That's what makes reactions so special and worth watching. I adore Gwangsik but obviously, as a female, and eldest daughter, I would naturally relate more to Ae-sun and her daughter most. For the same reason, I knew that you guys as men would be able to relate and give insight on Gwangsik more, and that's what makes your reactions fun. I've seen couples and families react to this show too, and they are all different and so heartwarming to watch. Every episode of this show, always hits close to home, so thanks for being so open and sharing your own personal stories. I hope you guys will continue to do so! P.S. People getting mad at you for glazing Gwan-sik is funny when EVERYONE loves that man 😭 He’s so special because he represents a level of emotional strength and selflessness that’s rare to see portrayed like that. Ae-sun is just as inspiring, but in a different way. She feels deeply real, like someone you could actually know. She reflects the strength so many women carry, while Gwan-sik feels more like an ideal of what men COULD strive to be.

I feel like the discourse around this show online has definitely been focused on a specific aspect of it: the joys and hardships faced by women of the past, for the women of tomorrow. As a woman myself, I don’t want to discount that perspective in the slightest, because it IS true— but at the same time, this show is also about men. Flawed men, selfish men, complicated men, and as evidenced by gwansik, genuinely good men. I think the reason why the yt comments are getting so mad at yall is because they’re missing that nuance. Just like I as a woman can be inspired by Gwangrye, Aesun, and later Geummyoung, can’t men like you guys be moved by the steelheart of love we know to be Gwansik? He may be a “fantasy” in many parts of the world, but like LOTR’s Aragorn, he’s become a cultural paragon of masculinity that many people love and want to emulate. And Geks: I don’t think you guys should be ashamed for counting yourselves among those ranks. As always, I’m enjoying your reactions and hope you guys have a wonderful day! There’s for sure more stuff going on with the daughter (Geum-myeong) than what we’ve seen so far. I wouldn’t say she’s ungrateful, even if it can seem that way at times. It’s more like she carries a lot of guilt about everything her parents went through and sacrificed for their kids, and she struggles to reconcile that with the life she lives now. As she reflects on their past it’s less about entitlement and more about sadness and frustration she doesn’t fully know how to express, which is why she can come off a bit harsh in glimpses of the future. You’ll see this more clearly as you get to know her!

If anything I like you guys perspective, since I'm a woman I pay more attention to Ae-Sun hardships but you guys have mentioned a few things about Guan-Sik that I didn't notice on my first time and it's just interesting how women and men are systematically raised different even to this day. I loved the whole boat scene, especially when Gwan-sik’s mom was going on about her son being “born lucky” and trying to take all the credit. It’s such a real reflection of how men often get credited for things that were only possible because of the women behind them. That money came from Ae-sun’s side! Her grandmother worked so hard to save it, passed it down, and Ae-sun chose to use it for their future. So when she speaks up and corrects her it’s so satisfying, giving credit where it’s actually due. She flipped the table 😉

This is really interesting context! A friend of mine who also watched this show actually explained this phrase to me too, I think that’s kind of why it stood out to me so much in the first place. When I used it, I meant it more in the way the show itself seems to reclaim it—like flipping expectations, gender roles, and old norms so their children can live differently than they did. So I wasn’t using it in the literal anger sense but more in the symbolic way the drama seems to build on it.

You should totally watch it! Kim Eunsook, the screenwriter of that drama, is also the creator of The Glory, Goblin, and Descendants of the Sun (all of which really hit it off with Korean and international audiences). Her work is a mixed bag in terms of execution for me despite their popularity, but I still recommend them all the same due to their cultural ubiquity ! Although not a perfect show by any means, Mr. Sunshine does a good job at capturing the general spirit of Korea’s societal turbulence at the turn of the last century— and ofc the actors really knock it out of the park :)

@Rebecca I agree WLGYT is relatable in a really direct way, that’s what makes it feel so real. But I’d still say Weak Hero is just as relatable, just in a subtler way. Behind the fights, it’s really about how things like bullying and isolation affect people, and how trust and friendship can literally change someone’s life. It’s less obvious but it hits just as hard for certain people.

i lowkey think cannon forgot about weak hero a bit. i am biased since weak hero (class 1) is my all time favourite kdrama but i do think weak hero is very meaningful just in a different way/setting than tangerines. this show can be seen as more relatable cause it feels like real life and portrays those themes in a clear way. while weak hero has more action, the bullying and isolation and stuff like that each character faces while not as obvious can be relatable in a different way (previous comments explain this a bit better). i will say tangerines is so goated though

I love love your reactions to tangerines, it's my all time favorite kdrama and I watched a looot, I remember skipping my math olympiad study sessions for watching kdramas😅 this took over my favorite "My Liberation notes" when it came out last year in March 7th, and my bay on 8th so it was kinda my bay present I loved it so much. Tangerines often pushes you into deep and quiet introspection of your own personal life choices and relationships. I love the generational sacrifice and community support in this epsiode because no one truly can do it alone. It reminded me of the "it takes a village to raise a child" proverb. I watched this with my mom who started a family at 18 so she resonated with that part the most. You just appreciate life, family, and friends so much more after each episode. Ahh i'm so late to this but currently eating with tears in my food 😭 I've never loved and wanted to root for a couple more than Gwan-sik and Ae-sun before, like their success is my success in a way. It was so hard watching them struggle and Gwan-sik feeling depressed because you know he so desperately wants to make Ae-sun/his family so happy and he did. Ae-sun as well breaking those toxic generational beliefs for her own daughter was just so well done, reminds me of my mum and grandma who consistently pushed me to have an education and career before marriage (even though they both constantly talk about men now lol). I'm so scared for the next episode, i have a feeling i'm gonna cry more 🙂‍↕️
