I think the only reason some ppl thought watching it later was better was because of the nostalgia we felt and not about any spoilers. Like it's been years since Marineford, seeing Luffy and Ace together, hearing Luffy yell "set sail", so watching this gave us so many memories and feelings. But it doesn't make sense to wait as long and peak is peak whenever you watch it 😎

Carter was locked in for this reaction I love it ❤️ The pacing is so fast and it's hard to read subtitles when you also want to watch the animation. A lot of things can fly over your head, but it seems like Carter didn’t have an issue with that. This episode has great rewatch value, so I hope you revisit it someday even if not on camera

Love how the episode demonstrates from the regular marine/person's perspective. We already knew Marineford was crazy but seeing it in this animation, you really can digest how insane being a regular person in this war fighting straight monsters. Makes you applaud Luffy more for keeping up even though he was at the end of his ropes. I also love how they contribute an important trait that Luffy has which is the "ability to rally others to his side and influence the people around him". Luffy being the one to give the marine a push to save his younger brother made me sob like crazy. This also makes Koby's scene with Akainu of him voicing for the regular marines so much more better

megumi ishitani, the queen that u r!! fan letter has to be one of my favorite pieces of media ever, especially as someone who was a little girl growing up with one piece and the strawhats too 😭 no matter how many times i watch it i always find myself crying numerous times - its just filled with so much love and heart, and u can really feel it! and the additional perspective of how the much the current events impact the surrounding world, and how the strawhats inspire so many without even meaning to, the whole thing is just incredible

Megumi Ishitani, the director of this episode, is a huge one piece fan, and you can easily tell by the way this episode was orchestrated. This episode feels like a love letter not only to the straw hats, but to everyone whose life has been touched by one piece. The whole bit with the 2 brothers never fails to make me cry, the way they re-contextualize marineford and give us an even more relatable story line, they truly understand what Luffy and these characters mean to people. Carter getting emotional was so real, I just can’t wait for you guys to go further into the story, we have so much more interesting plot lines and beautiful storylines to come!

For clarification: Modern One Piece does NOT look like this. The episode direction gets to this level. But, this almost cell-shaded look is highly stylised for fan letter, and specific to Megumi. Even then her work for the main One Piece show looks slightly different (more 'normal'). There is one opening (26 or 27 i think) that kind of goes in this direction. But the character depth and shading are still there in the main anime.

This episode was about the domino effect in all our lives. You dont know how much of an inspiration you are to how many people around the world. Each and every straw hat has their own fans, people that they personally inspired, for whatever reason. The one that hits hardest is ace and luffys bond as brothers. even though they are criminals, and not even biological brothers, their bond inspired an unknown amount of brothers around the world. Just goes to show you that you never know whos watching you. so those small good deeds that no one noticed, are being noticed someway some how. Just a beautiful thought. And also, what goes around, comes around. the straw hats helped those random people and those random people helped the strawhats. they dont need the recognition, because what goes around comes around, and who knows, the strawhats might save their town in the future again, or the world lol.

Loved the animation here I would say a lot of the elements in this remain in modern day one piece but not entirely I’d say it’s a mixture of both the current animation and the fan letter style. God I love One Piece. Every time I rewatch fan letter it reignites my passion for the world Oda created, and I'm so blessed to experience that feeling again, this time with the Geks. Been waiting for this react since the episode dropped!! The two big names behind this episode are Megumi Ishitani and Masami Mori, which may just feel like random names to you geks right now. But to us fans who are caught up, they are godlike figures behind some of the recent 10/10 episodes - the ones that constantly appear on everybody's "top 10 one piece episodes" list. Remember those names! you will see this style and animation again in some of the series most iconic episodes in the future!! Also, theres a One Piece store in Tokyo called the One Piece Base Shop, that features a giant circle/dome surrounding the walls of the store, and it is constantly looping a 15 minute animation of a living-breathing one piece world animated by those same two people. People go to that store and say it is like they are literally stepping in to the world of Fan Letter! (Don't look up a video though - spoilers are in it!!)

I didn't watch Fan Letter for the longest time, I don't know why. I had no idea how good it was, I watched it casually on my phone, somewhere random, low volume... I've never been more wrong in my life 😭 When I watched the "Because I'm your brother" scene, I had chills, tears, and I was shocked at the same time, I didn't know what was happening to me 😭😭😭 I had to pause and watch it on TV because wtf? This episode is PERFECTION.

Megumi Ishitani directed this, but I don't think Oda had any input on it. She directs a few episodes later on in the anime, all of which are seen as some of the best in the whole series. Also I have a feeling Oda will include the girl in the manga as a reaction panel later at some point.

Gotta give a bit of lore on two of the goated staff members that produced this masterpiece. MEGUMI ISHITANI was the director and storyboard artist for this episode, and is one of the most highly rated directors in the anime industry (the GOAT). She works on several of One Piece's highest rated episodes (and is in charge of arguably the best episode in anime: One Piece 1015) as well as openings much later in the story. Her creative direction is insane and everything she touches turns to magic. I (and so many others) can't praise her highly enough. KEISUKE MORI was in charge of the character design and animation direction for this episode. He is another goated part of modern One Piece production, with his art/animation style being very unique with its fluidity and minimalistic detail, as well as he's rounded/smooth designs that give the characters almost a "cartoon-feel". As you guys reach more recent episodes, you will understand how perfect his art style is for the One Piece world. Fan Letter was a very stylised/extreme example of his art style, in regular anime episodes it's a bit more tamed but you can still tell when Mori is involved and his episodes/scenes are always visually amazing.

The new animation + the fast pace intro is definitely overwhelming, so I recommend going back and rewatching it sometime because it is absolutely PEAK. The music in this episode is unreal and it makes me cry every time. I still cannot believe how they fit such incredible character building & story telling for UNNAMED characters in the length of a single episode. Also, Luffy's "SET SAIL" at the end hits so hard and it really feels like you're apart of the crew setting off. Anyway, glad you guys enjoyed it so much! See you in the New World!

Long rant & behind info: I absolutely love Fan Letter. Everything about it just works so well. I think the main reason some people didn’t want you to watch it is probably the animation style, which you’ll only fully experience in a couple of years (especially ep. 957, 982, 1015, 1072). The special was directed by Ishitani Megumi, who handled the storyboard, assembled the team and directed the entire project with over 500 frames. This wasn’t made by Oda, which is why there aren’t any “story-changing” interactions with the Straw Hats. It really feels like a love letter: made by fans, for fans. Some elements are loosely inspired by Straw Hat Stories, the novel written by Ōsaki Tomohito, like the two marine brothers and Franky appearing in a magazine. Ishitani also beautifully incorporated manga cover stories (for example, the little girl becoming Iceburg’s new secretary after Kalifa leaves, and Paulie gaining popularity in W7). What makes this special stand out is its perspective. Ishitani wanted to show the world through the eyes of ordinary people: those inspired by the Straw Hats. That’s why we never fully see the crew’s faces and only catch brief glimpses of them. Their presence is fleeting for anyone living in that world. I especially loved that the little girl was the focus. As a Nami fan, she perfectly captures what makes Nami so endearing: “I don’t have Devil Fruit powers or muscles like yours! I thought in this age, where power is everything, a powerless girl like me could never live freely. Nami is precious to me because she makes me believe I can have adventures too.” & “In this world where power is everything, even if I get hurt and trampled on, I still want to struggle, run, and live as freely as I can.” The symbolism of the girl (dressed like Nami’s earlier appearances) standing behind bars in the bookstore was such a beautiful touch. For me it echoes Nami being trapped in Arlong Park’s map room. While Cannon keeps saying he wants Nami to save her, I actually think that would have weakened the message. The girl admires Nami not for brute strength or devil fuit powers, but for her intelligence and resilience and the girl proves that herself by faking stealing the letter with the key. And her “reward” is seeing Nami in one of her happiest moments after the two-year timeskip. I also loved how different types of fans were represented: the underdogs for Nami, the power-scalers for Zoro lol, the dreamers for Luffy etc. Fan Letter really feels like a celebration of the entire fandom. Another incredible detail is that Ishitani brought in Hayashi Yuki, who worked as animation director on Strong World, Film Z, Gold and Red. He hasn’t worked with Toei in a while and has been involved in projects like MHA and Mob Psycho. You can really see his brilliance in the action fight scenes, like the Marineford sequence. Even though people often criticize Toei for animation, pacing, or storytelling, it’s clear that the staff genuinely loves One Piece. I still really hope you watch Strong World, since it’s directly created by Oda. If you liked the animation here, I’m sure you’ll enjoy that movie as well, especially with Oda’s storytelling behind it. Honestly, I just love being a One Piece fan!

There are so many pirates crews that are stronger than the Strawhats but none of them have the “luck” or charisma from empowering and inspiring others that make them take action. This is my favourite episode in all of One Piece, which is crazy because it's not even part of the story. But it encapsulates everything that makes One Piece wonderful, magical, and a classic for the ages. I know Toei screwed up with pacing and production decisions, but to be honest, this studio has been amazingly dedicated to OP for decades now. They've had to evolve over a long time and to this day, their love shows through. I'm looking forward to WIT's version, but there are some things that are irreplaceable from Toei's version: the voice actors, the music, and absolute gems like this Fanletter cannot be re-created.

WIT's version i feel like is to make it more accessible for new fans. Because lets be honest, One piece didn't particularly age very well and new people are very intimidated by the massive number of episodes. Each of the Big 3 need a remake and we at least get it with one piece. The remake will bring in so many fans and we get to see classic fights reanimated

True, a bit of a funny fact is how just recently the sound director (?) of One Piece retired, and comments below the post all was like "good" since a lot of the sound effects was wack and almost never changed for hundreds of episodes. But the OST's are sure will be difficult to replace, I hope they can arrange it similarly somehow. About GBuckets comment, I can't agree with "didn't age very well" bit. I'm rewatching Naruto Shippuden with Geks, but boy the animation is a lot harder to go through compared to One Piece on the rewatch. What I mean is even though the numbers are intimidating, it's digestable(?) lol.

Fan Letter was actually a really interesting episode. I really love the detail that they didn’t give the new characters any names so we, the fans, can relate to them and see ourselves in them. I also love the puzzle piece that appears every time someone contributes their love to the crew, and how all the pieces finally come together at the end and help Nami’s fan. That was honestly peak.🧡🧡 I love the little girl’s love for Nami, she really represents me. I remember when the episode came out, my friends sent it to me saying they made an episode about me 😭😭 And Oda even drew a “what if” of the girl giving Nami her letter. Inrerestingly, while i was watching one piece, i never notice the animation changed. I only did notice it when I was now watching reaction videos of reactors watching it from the beginning. This episodes animation isn’t the standard animation style in current one piece anyway, the boys have just been mislead to believe so lol. So yeah you’re good, the animation/art style change is gradual and not that different to how it is now in the 500s

Yes you make sense. The changes are incremental till Dressrosa, and then the change is apparent in Whole Cake, a huge jump in Wano, a biiig change in Egghead. That said, my personal favourite is Wano

Just to be clear, this is not the regular art/animation style of current one piece. The standard art style looks not too different than from it is now, just with more modern quality and sometimes grittier, matching Oda’s current drawing style. As for the amazing animation scenes in current one piece, they are done by an array of different animators that they have from both in-house and commission outside animators, all who use their own different unique styles . So the animation style of this episode is something you’ll maybe see for one scene once every 20 episodes or so in current one piece but it is not the standard, and is not even the style used in a lot of the best modern scenes atm.

Fan letter really is peak. This was your first introduction to Megumi Ishitani who directed it. She takes a LONG time to direct a single episode, but every single one of them is memorable. The next ones will take you guys a long time to get to, since they're in the 900s and 1000s. These episodes are marked by exceptional animation of course, but also visual story telling, like they have here with the puzzle pieces slowly coming together, or with the back to back shots of the elder marine and Luffy. I love One Piece, but one of the things I'm crazy about is how much love the creators have for not just the show, but for the fans to make something like this for us. What a time to be alive

you guys should hit up DUAnime and use the One Piece X edit they used to watch Fishman island arc it stiches together the new edit of one piece with the old while still making cuts like one pace but better. I watched the whole arc with them and it didn't feel really slow at all and you still get some of the new fishman island edit moments

Another amazing thing about the fan letter is that none of these side characters (main characters in this of course) have names. Not the marine brothers, the little girl Nami fan, the book store owner, the evil marine getting in the way of the little girl. Since Fan Letter is technically non-canon, I hope there's a filler episode one day where the marine and the girl get to meet the strawhats, and I hope Megumi Ishitani graces that filler with her touch

i watched fan letter a second time with a bunch of friends who'd never seen anything from one piece before- we all ended up with tears in our eyes. op fan letter is so passionate and authentically one piece, you can easily tell how loved and looked after not only our crew is, but the world and story as well. by fans, the vas, the animators, its everywhere. so naturally, the love comes across to even non-fans too!! its truly incredible. luffy's "set sail" always gives me chills, i freaking love one piece. thank you guys for your reaction! loved being able to relive the excitement + been looking forward to seeing first impressions on the newer animation style!!! (i absolutely adore it). appreciate the double weekly uploads (we are greedy) and cant wait for the future !!! >:)

Such a great perspective shift, and it makes you understand even more why Koby gave the speech and decided to try to stop Akainu, given the suffering he saw. To me this episode is proof that watching non canon stuff, or appreciating the anime as a unique story to the manga and not being super obsessed with the anime matching the manga perfectly - is worth it. Because this is technically not canon, and probably therefore she won't be in the manga later, but she could be in later non-canon episodes or as a cameo worked into canon scenes, and guess what, it would be PEAK.
