Put this show up in the rafters cause it belongs up there with the greats

Melizé

ONE HOUR OUTRO!!

Melizé

GEKS ARE COOKING

Vextipher

I give Orb 9/10. 10% goes to Potocki.

McKay Carter

How could you do this to my boy Rafal 🥀 😭

Cannon Andrus

We had to run it back after ep 23!!!

Melizé

Sad how our characters are replaced with black screens in the opening, symbolizing they are lost in history since there are no records of them available anymore 🥺

Vextipher

#notmyRafal 🌎

Vextipher

I don't know yet if the reaction brings it up, but I have to know what Neal's one thing about the show that was mentioned in Ep.1 Reaction.

Cannon Andrus

I hope you guys understand all of our points and feelings in the outro! I truly feel like fake rafal at the end is somewhat disingenuous to the audience and the congruence of the writing thus far in the show. I understand why Uoto did it to convey a certain message, but I feel like the creative liberty is not worth the character assassination that happens and it’s unnecessary. Outside of that, I was wholeheartedly satisfied with the ending of the show and it’s a literal masterpiece ❤️🤩 thanks for influencing us to watch a literal PEAK show!!!

Error445

I personally really disliked the last 2 episodes if I’m honest it went from a 9.1 to a 8.4

Jack

No stop 😭

M1GZ

Love this take feel the same way honestly

Melizé

Ah yes... And. Here. We. Go. Rafal 2 😬

Melizé

LMAOOO THE LOOK OF CONFUSION 😭😭😭

Melizé

🥺🥺🥺

Vextipher

Wholeheartedly agree.

Melizé

❤️❤️❤️❤️

James

In general terms, I like the overall story, and this is from one of my reviews "...it’s also a story about our desire to understand how the universe works, and understanding our place in it; it’s a story about faith and the pursuit of truth. And in pursuit of this truth, advancing and simple technology can have a profound impact on the world."

Jeff

This is truly a special morning🔥🔥🔥

Miitei

#NotMyRafal will be trending

James

For more thought-provoking anime, I recommend watching Monster and it would be nice if you auto added this because it will never win due to recency bias. There will be times you will have have to be patient with it, but there is lots to discuss with ethical and moral dilemmas and the writing towards the end is PhD level stuff. The new Ghost in the Shell anime is receiving some hype, so you may want to watch that in July. Like I keep saying, the 1995 Ghost in the Shell is one of the most influential and philosophical ever made.

Melizé

Yeah honestly I would have been surprised if you didnt watch ep 25 right after 😂 a lot of us had to wait a whole week, in which crazy theories flooded through the orb community

Shiki

Monster is great

Conk

The best thing about a show ending is getting into a new one

Miitei

I still have to work 3 more hours, but I'm so glad I have this 2h long video waiting ❤️

Daniella

The last nando demo 😭 i thought the last two eps would drop seperately but ik the outro would be long asf haha can't wait to hear these thoughts!!!

Melizé

The monologue from ep 1, coming back on ep 25 🔥 glad they caught that

Melizé

"I'll doubt as I move forward and believe as I turn back, my pursuit of beauty and inspiration will never end" 🥹

Melizé

Albert opening his arms like Schmidt 🥹 its like they all live within him. To think that the name of the book would travel space and time to be heard by Albert as he walks by, talk about MIRACLES! All of our goats efforts amounted to a single sentence that would influence Albert's way of thinking and I wouldn't have it any other way. The chances of that happening were "infinitesimally low" as Badeni would put it, but it was honoring your predecessors and putting trust on those that come after you to allow this to happen. I love the ending of this anime. I agree that I would have liked Uoto to give us a more concrete answer when it comes to Rafal 2, but in a way I am glad he did it that way because it allowed me to have so many discussions with those who think differently than I am. Neal and I, for example, have different takes on how we feel about it, I felt like Schmidt and Draka at some point, having such opposing feelings about it LOL. At the end of our 2 hr conversation, we both just agreed to disagree 😂 but I love it. Uoto left us to find our own truth and have our truths challenged by talking about it with people with opposing views. I hear Cannon and Carter talking about it and I see myself and Neal in them (I am Carter). Literally word by word, we have had the exact arguments 😂😂

Melizé

I am here once again to recommend 100 meters 😂❤️

GreetswithJudgement

My thought process is this. He knew it was her. However he was in denial that it was her. But he knew. He just didn’t want to believe it. And finally gave up his pride and denial in the end. But he knew. Just couldn’t admit it until death pushed him to accept it. That’s just me though.

McKay Carter

You’re never gonna believe this…

Melizé

I recommend Love is War for your next show, not a philosophical anime at all lol but peak comedy and good vibes 😂

Chosos Wife

I was so so so confused and angry when they brought Rafal back. I cried every single episode after episode 3 whenever I saw him in the intro and outro. He was just an innocent baby who wanted to learn and was murdered for it. So seeing his character being brought back, au or not, and being such an opposite from his original self, made me angry as fuck. I loved the whole show beginning to end and I understand what they were trying to do with bringing him back but they could have just as easily used another character for that role instead of tearing down my son like that.

Or both! Devilman Crybaby is only 10 episodes 🫣

ooAlmondMilk

Made in abyss would go crazy, there’s also a movie coming out later this year

Synyster

Obligatory Fate/Strange Fake recommendation. You guys loved Fate/Zero, and this show is on par in terms of action and animation. No doubt you’ll be hooked after the Episode 0 OVA

jrnoodles

Thanks Geks! And thanks Mel for making me watch this anime ages ago :)

I'm happy that you guys like ORB! I hope you can watch 100 Meters soon it's from the same author, AND HOLYYYY MOVIE

N P

JoJo's incoming ☝️

Jānis Briedis

In episode 1 subtitles say Kingdom of P. but in end of 23.episode ther was Kingdom of Poland. So i asume it means that action from 1 to 23 ep was just story of fiction. but episode 24-25 are based on real life events . but is only my opinion . so i thint that Rafal from episode 3 realy die and Rafal from episode 24-25 is alternetiv version of him in reality.

GreetswithJudgement

I didn’t mind second place Rafal. I guess just in life we think ideas outlive people when it’s quite the opposite. People absolutely die, but their truths do not. It doesn’t necessarily change the plot imo but it absolutely does reframe it. Is it reincarnation? Alternate universe? Maybe a wannabe… Our curiosity and questions won’t ever be condemned. So there’s something good about it.

Vextipher

"Now I see. You found something too. Something worth the risk of descending into hell. Lord God, my daughter's sins all stemmed from my misunderstanding." to me this is Nowak connecting the two pieces together, Jolenta's glove and hand, in a symbolic way and completes his understanding.

Cannon Andrus

Then how is the letter in 25 the same

bondbond53

Did you guys drop it?

Walter White

I dont think its a different universe i just think Uoto used rafals face and likeness to enhance Alberts backstory but realistically he probably should've just used a new character.

James

In one of the greatest pieces of literature, One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Marquez uses “magical realism” to blend reality with fantasy which serves different purposes. When I watched the ending of the story, I felt the author was doing the same for Orb.

Jānis Briedis

when i say fiction i mean its how i could happen but its still pure imagination of author. someting in real hisstory make that leter or maybe it even wasnt a leter but someting else. so i think there is no reason to conect first 23 ep and last two. but that's just my opinion, no evidence, just a theory

Allsports Athletics

Ok hear me out, Rafal in the last 2 episodes is NOT the Rafal that we know, the Rafal we know died by poisoning himself. Albert Bruzewksi is a REAL WORLD character, he had a teacher named Rafal and Uoto used that to present his teacher as our Rafal, basically he is not the Rafal we know of just a metaphor to present his ideas to the audience. It is a bit confusing but here is how it goes, Albert at 23 years of age and enlisting to the university happens at the same TIME that Draka dies basically, so him as a kid (Lets assume he was like 10-12 years old) would make Rafal aged 12 + 23 or 25 = 35 to 37 years of age which he obviously was not (More like 20-25). Now the PRIEST you saw is one of the two inquisitor students that Nowak had, his sin is letting his friend die for helping Jolenta escape, its confirmed because they have the same VA and that sin has been eating at him for years. Basically in the first 23 episodes the story is FICTIONAL, its the story that Uoto wanted to say about people who are lost from the history books, people who tried but were never remembered, these are our fictional protagonists! Episode 24-25 is in the REAL world but from out story's perspective when Draka dies, as you already saw Albert's student Copernicus went on to discover Heliocentrism. Its a bit confusing but it makes perfect sense and is a wonderful ending, could Uoto have someone else but Rafal as Albert's teacher? Definitely, but that added more of an wow factor for the last episodes. Lastly I would love you guys to watch and react to a video where all FOUR endings are presented at once, there are some insane details like for example in the first 2 openings Draka "Moves forward to leave the scene" while in the 3rd and 4th she stays still which represents her "embracing the sun" , and another really cool one is Rafal at the end of the opening always "losses" the necklace which in the 4th ending appears right into Albert's hands! So many many more cool details that would be awesome if you reacted to!

Carter D. Andrus

Not sure if the opinion is unpopular or not, but I actually liked the idea of using rafal the way they did. Obviously this was controversial in our outro as the geks are split, but it not only made me love the real rafal more but hit home the point the author was trying to convey. I completely understand why people dislike it tho!!

Evelyn_Endwise

The first 23 episodes all take place in 'The Kingdom of P'. The final 2 take place in 'The Kingdom of Poland'. That and the total impossibility of Rafal living/his age relative to the events of the 23 eps not being possible clearly points to two different worlds. Poland is essentially our world, P is a more fictive idea of possible events in the pursuit of truth that lead up to that one sentence that inspires Albert. I consider Poland's Rafal a separate character to P's Rafal. I don't see it as character assassination as to me he is both a different person and Poland Rafal is an understandable possible endpoint of P Rafal's radical philosophy. P Rafal did not/is not fated to become Poland Rafal, but he absolutely could have had he lived. I also found it more impactful that the author chose to use our own protagonist we were attached to make a point regarding what the pursuit of truth can lead to. I'd say it definitely lends more to creating debate which I'm sure he enjoys seeing. Some recommendations like Orb: Monster would be a recommendation for something similar but it's long. Themes on morality, justice, human nature in late 20th century Europe. Legend of the Galactic Heroes for space opera with discussion on different political systems and costs of war, but it's very old and long as well so too hard to approach perhaps (there's a remake but not yet finished). Psycho Pass (just S1) for similar themes of free will in a Cyberpunk dystopia. Most approachable of all my recs. Shin Sekai Yori has some great themes to tackle but I can't say much on them due to spoilers. It can be a bit of a slow burn though to start but I think the intrigue is alluring enough. Ghost in the Shell 2 movies + SAC would be an obvious one to check out, if nothing else because highly influential. Ergo Proxy for a much more surreal, metaphysical kinda philosophy show. Prob as hard to get into as LotGH due to opaqueness rather than age.

Synyster

Some stuff might be too much for them. Gotta ease them into more with other shows lol

Mitch

Yea like cannon said the letter is the same so it’s all the same universe. The thing with rafal was just a visual metaphor showing a kind of alternate reality of what rafal could’ve been.

Daniella

The topic of Rafal 2 is definitely controversial. I personally choose to believe that it’s showing the extremities of pursuing truth, therefore he is a metaphor and not our Rafal. If they did this with Nowak (e.g. him sacrificing himself for heliocentrism somehow) would that change how i feel about og Nowak? Not at all and i don’t think that should take away from the og character. But i agree, it should’ve been made a bit clearer or they use a new character cause i think the message would’ve gotten across either way.

Daniella

This show truly is one of one for me. It reminded of me how much i love philosophy, the deeper ideas within theology and debating big ideas (made me miss debate club lol). This is one of those more rarer objectively s-tier shows. I will admit subjectively it’s not up there for me (as in my top 10 favourite animes) but it’s a true masterpiece in characters and storytelling. Could we pretty please use this slot for seinen/shoujo shows from now on? It would be nice to have something different from everything that’s being watched again :)

M1GZ

Personally for me I would’ve preferred they made the reveal more obvious and not so weird. If they had made his hair slightly darker and his eyes brown and called him Bafal It would’ve served the same thematic function without confusing the hell out of everyone like come on I'm reading alternate universe theories like come on guys no... its just a thematic representation done very clunckly imo.

Ram.

Great show, love the discussion. I think it was Rafal, but more representative of an opposite of how he was in the previous version. Recommending To Be Hero X for next series.

M1GZ

Perhaps give him the same fit but revert the colors or make them darker or something it just felt too on the nose and weird.

Edu MP

The priest was the Inquisitor

ooAlmondMilk

I get what you’re saying, but how do you even ease them into that stuff💀💀

Sari-chan

Yes!! But sorry for hijacking your comment, I would like to watch "Run in the Wind" with y'all! I have watch "100m" but not RWTW, and I heard it was top-tier sport anime, hihi

DrNutBurger

I was a little put off by it being rafal originally, but It makes it a lot more potent than a random killing alberts dad

Sari-chan

The Rafal 2.0 got my world spinning!! I was calculating the age he would be and how he could ever be there, and it did not make sense. I felt a bit betrayed, not gonna lie. I missed him, but it is just not him...

Sari-chan

Remix of what his father and Rafal told him. Beautiful way of wrapping up this show. T v T

Sari-chan

The author be playing with us!!! My heart...

Sari-chan

The only comment that got me out of my grief

Jeff

I agree, I get the point of going with a thematic character doppelganger for..what, a shock factor(?), but it did make it a bit more confusing and could have had the same story connect with a new npc.

Melizé

Hahaha yeah I was doing the math too 😂 definitely not our goat

Melizé

Run with the wind is amazing!

DrNutBurger

Rafal does not exist. He is a concept. He was there to show how both extremes were bad. He could be the kid that dies for knowledge and the adult that kills for it.

Jeff

Still a hot topic I'm sure xD

Melizé

In complete agreement with you

Melizé

Orb should definitely be studied in schools ❤️

Jeff

This is the saddest part. Literally just a possible story of limitless options of limitless characters and tragedy's that leads up to how that book was made. I love our characters journeys though. ❤️

Jeff

Im just starting the outro now. So curious to see their takes on what is so controversial haha

arthas

Carter as always - BASED!

Melizé

Hahaha their outro was great!

Chosos Wife

It mad me really mad. He was just an innocent child who sacrificed his life for what he believed in. So to suddenly come back as a crazy murderer just for knowledge I hated it

joursh

FATE/STRANGE FAKE OR SENTENCED TO BE A HERO FOR NEXT SHOW !!!! (cope)

joursh

100% agreed, it was a great tie in from the first 23 episodes and also helped with shifting from a fictional story to reality (also the way i took it was that both rafals we see aren't a real person per se but a contradicting ideology. two sides of the same coin)

alex anderson

Agreed. Was gonna leave a comment similar to this but everyone seems to be doing it for me lol. I saw Ghost of shell shorts, is it an older anime reboot or something? Is it good?

alex anderson

Easily top 5 anime I’ve watched. Maybe top 3. Left an impression on me that I will always strive to remember and take inspiration from.

Ram.

I lived in Hawaii for 10 years on Oahu and I've also been to the big Island to see the Milky Way at night. They use a special type of street lamp bulb that emits a light that drowns out colors, which makes it look like it's black and white which is really trippy. But it helps with light pollution so the sky can be as bright as possible there. Also, the dislike for the telescopes is pretty split. A lot of it is concern for ruining the land as Carter said, but there's also a good portion who like it because the Hawaiians were ALL about astronomy and the stars and learning about them, using them for navigation. So they both like and dislike the telescopes.

Jeff

Haven't finished the outro yet but my take was that the 'Rafal' at the end is just symbolic, it could have been a new npc to make it less confusing, and the use of a thematic doppelganger ended up being poorly executed/confusing? I don't think it mattered who the teacher was, rather the ideas the teacher represented and taught to Albert which then led him to being curious about the book title which thenleads/blends into our real history.

alex anderson

When watching this for first time, I was very “wtf? Idk what’s going on. Whats he doing here?” But afterwards I went back and did some research to figure out. Watched end of episode 3 back and made sure he gets burnt at the stake, which is what happens. Then I did some google research. It also made it more believable that it was representation because in episode 1 they say it was early 15th century, and that Rafal dies at 13 which is at least 35 years before the last two episodes in 1468, so at max it would be like 1433 when he died. So just using the events that take place, without looking deep into storytelling, writing, etc.

2 HOURS?! SPOILED 🫶🏻

I'm going to miss this show so much!

Melizé

🗣🗣🗣🔥

DontFailArtSchoolEren

Basically everything you watched before Albert was a retelling of characters and their interpretations of what happened through the book that survived and spread throughout the world, using Rafals design in the last 2 episodes is intentionally jarring.

HERE TO RECOMMEND HELL'S PARADISE

Jeff

Great watch for sure.🔥

alex anderson

Recommending a poll with all of the “indefinite pause” shows to vote on finishing one of them.

Miitei

I'm going to give my perspective before I see your discussion. For me, this Rafal is a representation of how far you can get in the pursuit of knowledge. We know kid Rafal went as far as accepting his own death and protecting his knowledge, adult Rafal killed to steal knowledge. Adult Rafal is not our Rafal, he was burned in episode 3. Adult Rafal is, for me, a direct parallel with Nowak. Nowak was someone who was firm in his beliefs almost the whole show, he basically let his faith dictate his life and killed people because of it. I know adult Rafal is "controversial", but I actually liked that his image was used to represent this, personally, this doesn't affect my view on kid Rafal's character (because they are not the same), but I totally understand why someone might have a problem with his appearance being used for this character that didn't do any good actions at the end of the story, very risky if you ask me. I feel it as a "what-if" Rafal never met Hubert and carried on with his life as it was supposed to be, so that makes Hubert's presence even more impactful for me, and I don't know, I find it very poetic that the image of the little kid that died protecting his knowledge for future generations was used to traumatize (us) Albert to the point he didn't want to pursue more knowledge than needed to survive. All in all, I just gotta say, I love Orb, there is not a lot of media that makes me think and even question my own beliefs the way that Orb does. Thank you for the reaction, I'm going to miss it 🥹

Miitei

And also, before I continue with the video. Fun fact, if you watch all the 4 op versions side by side, you will notice that Oczy's version has better quality, vibrant colors, and the images are clearer referencing that Oczy had good eyes 🥹❤️

Nashi

I’m again advocating for Run with the Wind too!! One of my few 10/10s

Nashi

I’m so hyped for Ghost in the Shell and the Mongolian Juulgar one

Synyster

AoT has uncomfortable moments, its just Made in Abyss is uniquely uncomfortable. ITs a top 10 show for me regardless

Nashi

A bit of Albert’s conversations with his dad and the conversation with the priest is really good. On first watch I thought it was unnecessary but on second watch this last episode hit so much harder. Overall the show is like an 8-8.5 something like that to me, I’m not a huge fan of the first like 13 episodes but then it turns into some of the best stuff I’ve watched and stuff that legitimately stayed with me in life

Nashi

Cannon man Rafal literally died, how is it that difficult lol

Tyler

I wasn't a huge fan of the ending on first watch but ive come to appreciate it after watching the show a few times

na

haha oh boy. reading this before going in.

Deepraj

This show means a lot to me as I became a believer from an atheist (atleast thats what I want to believe). Of course nobody knows the truth about God but I love the fact that our existence is a miracle in itself and having a God makes it more beautiful just like a mother gives birth to their child (which itself is a miracle in itself) The thing that I will keep in my heart about this show is the fact that any kind of universal truths/inventions/discoveries that we have today came from a miracle of someone's existence. Imagine Galieo without telescope, Edison without bulb, Tesla without his Alternating Current. All of these creations came from a spark of curiosity of wanting to know stuffs. In the last 2 eps we see a version of Rafal that goes to the far extreme to justify his beliefs. As Jolenta mentioned to Draka "Convictions can become a curse". I can easily see young Rafal had he existed for long, would have succumbed to his own convictions. To conclude, this show masterfully tells us how to strive towards seeking truth. Not for the thirst of knowing to go the extremes, nor to go to another extreme by denying everything. We keep wondering ...just like the protagonists of this show Thanks a lot for watching this show

na

I mean i think that you're take is what its supposed to be more or less.

Tyler

The summer Hikaru died 🙏

Tyler

Agreed, I think it would have been less jarring if they had spent a couple episodes building up a new character who grew to be the “Rafal” of the time, imparting all the wisdom that those from the main story left behind but I understand what the author was going for

Deepraj

Thought provoking concepts to takeaway from this show: 1. Doubt and belief can coexist just like science and religion 2. Critical thinking and dialogue are necessary skills to seek truth 3. Convictions can become a curse if they are held tightly. 4. Truth always prevails 5. Heliocentrism or equivalent ideas that contradicts church teachings were never the issue. It's the belief that "this idea/belief would make the world turn into chaos" which is the issue. 6. Anyone can be corrupted by the system when they are put into positions of power no matter how morally right you are. 7. Human's arete (inherent potential) is to think. It's more relevant in a world with low attention span and AI that gives you the answer directly without you thinking it through. 8. With changing times, we should adapt to the change.

Tyler

Wish I had known about this when I visited Hawaii, definitely on the list for the next time that sounds so cool

Tyler

4th time rewatching and I never noticed that what a cool detail

Smart Guy

Nah throw em into it it's peak

Holden

This video ending was depressing, no more Orb :( so glad you guys watched it though! By the way, I would love if you guys watched Look Back, it's a film that was originally a one shot manga by Tatsuki Fujimoto the creator of Chainsaw Man and it's such an artistic masterpiece, and it's only an hour long.

Adi Agustha

To put it simply, the author marries his fictional story and the real history with the passing of the letter. Spritually passing the torch from our characters while also grounded in reality. Absolute orb man

Miitei

At the beginning we got a vague location and time, it was 15th century, the kindom of P, then when Albert shows up we get a clear place "The Kindom of Poland" and a year 1463. Many people interpreted this as a separation of fiction and reality, I like to think that refers to the fact that only Albert was the one that actually made to history. We know who Albert is, we can search his name on the internet and it will show all his contributions while he was alive, whereas Rafal, Oczy, Badeni, Jolenta, Draka, Schmidt and everyone else didn't make it and had nobody to carried their name to history. I love how this is also represented in the opening sequence showing just a black screen when before we could see our characters 🥲 This make me think of the people that worked hard and probably contribute to what we have in modern times but we know nothing about them. In the show we at least get that tiny satisfaction that Albert got inspired by Oczy's book title and that's good enough for me to think all their sacrifices were worth it.

zak

re zero or dr stone PLEASE NEXT

Reefat Bakht

Boys, I really wish you guys would react to the music video for the Orb opening and the story behind the guy who made the song. It's really beautiful, touching, and added a lot of lore to the show for me. The song was basically a product of the musician's own search for truth, in the face of his life's greatest challenges.

BigManSirob

Highly recommend you guys watch 100 Meters which is an anime movie based on the author of Orb's other manga. It's super thought provoking just like Orb while also having insane animation. Plus I feel like there hasn't really been an anime movie reaction in a while, so this would be a good way to rectify that. Please watch 100 Meters! 🙏

awimbawei

Here is a copy of an explanatiion from MAL, which I personally believe to be true and feel it makes the most within the context of the show. "If you didn’t understand the ending, you should rewatch the show or the manga. Because if you don’t understand the show’s philosophy of always being rational and never deceiving the audience, you won’t grasp the ending. To put it simply: From the beginning, we were watching Albert’s book. In detail: We were reading Chi. Chikyuu no Undou ni Tsuite with Rafal, Ockzy, etc., in Chi. Chikyuu no Undou ni Tsuite, written by Albert, in Chi. Chikyuu no Undou ni Tsuite, the manga adapted into an anime. There’s no alternate timeline or miracle: -1st, because it adds nothing to the story. If it were truly an alternate timeline, then Albert’s story would be meaningless. -2nd, because if you paid attention to the details and characters throughout the show, you should have noticed that Albert, his dad, the Priest, and Rafal inspired Ockzy, Badeni, Nowak, Jolenta, Rafal, Schmidt, Lev and Draka in the book. + From the start, the story with Rafal, Ockzy, etc., was set in "chapters" during the anime (you can see it at the end of episode 1 before the ED), and during the opening sequence of episode 1, we first hear the priest’s speech with Albert... Which means the entire show is Albert’s answer to that speech. Every detail in this show suggests that it’s a story written by Albert based on who he is, what he experienced, and the people he encountered. Even the city is the same (if you read the manga). Just like Makoto Yukimura created Vinland Saga with partial information about Thorfinn, Albert created Orb with the partial information he had about the people he met, his surroundings, and his life." Not the original reply, but close enough with further explanation: https://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=2205976&goto=post&id=72494440 Different post by the same guy with an image attached concerning the Author's intentions and further clarification: https://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=2206084&goto=post&id=72489976

rheed_

It's finally over! W reactions for one of my favorite shows of all time I feel what Cannon was saying here about thinking too much about what was going to happen rather than focusing on what was happening. It's easy to get caught up in plot intricacies, but put simply, that's not the point. For reference, here's part of my comment on the episode 3 post relating to my thoughts on the viewing lens one should have when watching Orb: "You derive the best experience when 1) you focus on the overarching themes of the show as well as the characterization (the thought processes of the characters and how they arrive at their beliefs) rather than plot events themselves, and 2) also just quietly, patiently absorbing the atmosphere for what it is and waiting for events to unfold." The Rafal question is completely left up to the viewer's interpretation, because there's no objective way to determine the truth of the situation here. Whether you believe the Rafal of Albert's past inspired Albert to write a story with him as a character in it, or that the Rafal of Albert's past was a symbolic representation of a Rafal gone evil, those are all valid interpretations. Until/unless the mangaka says/has said something about it, there shouldn't be an authoritative explanation. The closest thing to an objective metric we have is the timeline, with Draka's arc theoretically ending around the same time that Albert's arc begins, but even that can be cast into doubt. At the very least, I don't think it's cope to believe the Rafal of Albert's past is not the same person as the Rafal of the first three episodes, given that there's a very solid amount of circumstantial evidence for that belief. The interpretation I subscribe to is that the mangaka chose to use Rafal to separate fiction from reality, similar to something Jack said. For starters, when Albert comes into the story, he lives in the "Kingdom of Poland", as opposed to the "Kingdom of P" that the story had been using previously. This is likely a device meant to signify a crossing over from fiction to reality. However, the Albert Brudzewski of reality never had that traumatic past, so using Rafal's likeness is a signal to the viewers that "hey, this part is still fictional." This isn't a super satisfying interpretation, but it's probably the most likely I've seen so far. As for why the mangaka chose to use Rafal's likeness specifically, I'm just as lost as the rest of you. All in all, whether you like it or not, my personal belief is that you shouldn't get too hung up over the Rafal thing, and it's great that the Geks didn't seem to. It's valid that emotional attachment to Rafal would lead people to see it as a bastardization of his character. At least to me though, the Rafal mystery subtracts absolutely nothing from what Orb set out to do. I'm glad y'all loved the show!

Everyone should understand, you guys expressed yourself so well through every single reaction! I also think your take is completely valid, and true to the thoughtful spirit of the show: you can love this series while also having your own opinions and evaluating what works for you. Thanks for always being 2000% engaged, Cannon!

How funny it is that humanity's progress is incredibly delayed by... humanity itself xd. But in the end it happens either way because of the inherited curiosity and eternal seek of truth that we each have inside ourselves. Even Novak had it within him in some way.

AvaRISE

Truly a moving show, love that you guys reacted to this!

One of the biggest "if's" for me is, what if the church and religion had never gotten in the way of progress when it came to science? How far as a species would we have grown if we didn't restrict free thinkers who thought out-of-this-world ideas? Everything we have with science and technology is so new that we're basically hundreds of years behind what we could have been. Even to this day, as an adult, I still look at the stars and the night sky in wonder and horror. I tend to think about how we as a species are so insignificant on the grand scale of things in this universe, and the main thing that pops up in my head is why are we alive? I'm not sure who else is like me, but there are some days when I look around and think where is all this going? What purpose do I have to offer besides living, breathing, and working my life away? I'm scared of the end, but I cannot wait to see what is at the end of my journey. P.S. I watched this after getting home from the bars, so my mind and thoughts were everywhere after watching these last two episodes.

Thank you for watching this 🥹👏

This might be a controversial take but I think that using adult Rafal to hammer home the theme of doubting your own convictions is actually perfect. I believe Adult Rafal is what Child Rafal would have become, had he not died for his convictions in episode 3. It may seem like that's insane and a murderous Rafal couldn't be further from the Rafal that Martyred himself but I have several reasons to believe this. I don't have time to list all of them so I'll just do a couple: The entire story up to that point we're led to believe Rafal's conviction was the most "correct" one, as his ideas are always indirectly affecting the "protagonists" of each arc and leading them to fight and die for their own convictions. Then, a seed of doubt is planted when Jolenta says, "Perhaps I have blind faith in the authority of Heliocentrism, those who serve me may have ceased thinking too..." "...whenever we think, assumptions of some kind occur, and those eventually become authority..." "...the passion that runs beneath those conditions travels a trajectory that can be reckless. It can produce beautiful accomplishments or grotesque tragedies." And later when Draka tells her that money is her conviction Jolenta replies, "That is important, but sometimes, you meet something that makes you forget your convictions, you should value those feelings too, otherwise... you'll end up like me." I don't think Rafal would have ever doubted his convictions had he lived to adulthood, and I think good and evil are 2 sides of the same coin. Every human has the capacity for evil if their conviction convinces them their belief is justified, and I know this is an overly drastic comparison but hitler wasn't born evil either. Again to quote what Jolenta says, "Evil and good may not necessarily be different things, but one and the same." To show Rafal committing an act of evil for his convictions is akin to telling the viewers to keep doubting themselves and their convictions, no matter how justified they may feel in pursuing what they think is the truth. Had another character been used, Rafal would have been cemented in the viewer's mind as the ultimate truth, his beliefs and conviction would have been cemented as truth, his character would be revered by the audience as an idealistic god, which I believe is the opposite of one of the messages the author tried to convey. Adult Rafal would never have doubted his convictions, his endless curiosity would have kept growing, with nothing to hold it back. People may think it was a character assassination but I think it's a perfect depiction of human nature when there is not an equal level of "conviction" and "doubt" being present in your thoughts, actions, and your justifications for them. Also, as another comment said, This entire story is supposed to be Albert's answer to the Priest's question in the confessional: What does one have to give up to obtain the truth of this world? I believe the answer to that question is, your conviction. Something that always stuck with me was during the conversation with Child Rafal and Nowak during the church burning, Rafal looks at the audience and says "After all, I'm just an illusion that you created." And then of course after that episode, we get Adult Rafal in e24. I thought that was a brilliant way for Uoto to break the fourth wall a little bit before introducing Old Rafal. The way the shot is framed, Child Rafal is talking TO US just as much as he is talking to Nowak.

I remember finishing orb , sitting in silence for a few minutes and then searched for explanation video on YouTube because I was so confused

Yea, it was just an unfortunately poor execution. I get what he was trying to do but I dont think it worked. Maybe Ill read the manga someday to see if it makes more sense haha

NANDO DEMO Okay, just needed to get the last nando demo out of my system. Thank you all for reacting to one of my favorite shows, I enjoyed your reactions and I am very happy you all loved it. Thank you to everyone in the comment section for engaging with me in the comments and to those who just engaged with the show in general, I loved reading all the comments, especially the longer ones. Glad this show was able to touch so many people. Much love to you all ❤️

As a first time watcher, I was definitely shocked when Rafal appeared again, but I liked it. I found myself agreeing with Carter’s views and interpretations of the ending. Overall, it’s a fantastic show, and I’m glad you guys decided to watch it because I’d never heard of it before and don’t think I would’ve picked it up. I think it’s fair to say it’s an underrated show that a lot of people should definitely watch. Also, a goated comment section and community🫡

GreetswithJudgement

It’s okay Mel, we can still glaze it together on discord lol

Melizé

Ahhaha so true Greets 🥹

Nashi

Bro Cannon nitpicking at the end with nowak was pure ragebait lol. There was literally no way of him to know 100% and that’s a fact, there’s no fighting it, and it was done like that exactly for the reason Carter said, for FAITH, for HOPE. You cant have that with certainty, it goes against what the show keeps telling us

Ninaly

I disliked Rafal's reappearance until I saw him standing over the dead father, and then I loved it. I think this is a twist that ages better with rewatch, when you're less shocked he's even there at all. Here is my interpretation of Uoto's choices: (THE SETTING) This time skip features a real historical figure, so we have to move away from the fictional universe "Kingdom of P" into a more real timeline. We are now in the "Kingdom of Poland" and the towns actually have names. The previous characters now exist in ambiguityi; we don't know what carried over or changed, but we see three main echoes: the priest that betrayed his friend, the message to Potocki, and a version of Rafal born in this timeline. (WHY SHOW US RAFAL AS A VILLAIN?) Because Uoto doesn't want to glorify the decisions made by our main characters, but due to the bias of being in their perspective, their actions are naturally framed as heroic and right. I think his perspective on Rafal's death is reflected in Novak's words: "I felt pity seeing the choice you made. You musn't choose death. You're too young to be killed by beliefs, be they your own or those of others." Keep in mind, Rafal didn't have to die. He could have let the materials burn and then spent the rest of his life recreating them. Any child who sacrifices their life at thirteen is not just admirable - they are also extreme. In Rafal's case, he was a radical freethinker whose conviction could override anything, even his instinct for preservation. If conviction is what pushes action, then that same mindset can just as easily lead to violence, as we've seen play out for Novak and Jolenta. In this series, our main characters have killed just as many people as their enemies. They are "freedom fighters," a term that is loaded with violence today. Jolenta is the clearest example: she could have lived her life quietly, but instead chose revenge and heliocentrism through raids and killing. If heliocentrism were incorrect, would all these deaths over retrieving the book feel much more senseless? Jolenta is the only person whose journey of heliocentrism didn't end early, and it led her through a life of armed resistance, bloodshed, and death. She admits it was dangerously easy to justify her violence under the shield of a worthy cause, and more importantly, tells Draka not to end up like her - to wander instead. This is a rejection of the hero's journey glorified so far in the anime, but because the show started so strongly in the opposite direction, it's hard to notice right away. (IS CONVICTION EVEN GOOD?) Pursue the truth and fight for your convictions at all costs; that’s the foundation of the story, jump-started and embodied by Rafal. By the middle of the anime, we start to see complications. Conviction is still important, but we've seen almost every character change drastically. Their goals shift, their philosophies evolve, and they end up on strange and unexpected paths. How do you know you're on the right path, fighting for the right belief? Grown-up Jolenta, grown-up Rafal, and Nowak are vehicles used to explore that question. The series ends with Albert struggling with both sides of the story we've been told. He doesn't see a ethical approach between his father (representing Novak and the Church) versus Rafal (representing our MCs and heliocentrism). He's afraid of developing conviction itself, because of the violence it begets. His resolution is my favourite line from the whole show: "I'll doubt as I move forward, and believe as I turn back." This is perhaps Uoto's answer to the problem presented in the series, of how to navigate towards truth in a complex and contradictory world. What is the freest, most ethical way to think? Orb wants you to contain all the multitudes within yourself: believe enough to start a path, doubt enough to look around, be curious enough to wander, and humble enough to try it all again.

This is Daniel

Like many, I see the last two episodes as an alternate version of events. In this reality, Rafal grows up and is willing to kill for his convictions. In a way, those actions prove that Novak was correct in recognising that "heracy" left unchecked could indeed become a dangerous concept. Our main characters throughout the series all play their respective parts. But as the Bishop stated before his death, Novak (and ultimately, all of them) would be lost to history. Our attachment to them is almost like Count Piast's fixation to his Geocentric theory... the show is literally challenging us to suspend / abandon belief in everything we knew before, in favour of a different reality that shatters our concept on what we've invested time and effort to perceive as our known reality. It's actually crazy to have this epiphany on the rewatch. Moreover, this theory is just one of many. Like the show states, there are no singular truths, just a never ending field of possibilities. TLDR - the show breaks our concept of what we know by changing everything and forcing us to think outside the box...Just because.

This is Daniel

PS - Please consider watching: To Your Eternity. Another great show about life / connections, with a more supernatural foundation. Definitely tear jerker for sure 😊👌🏾

Now we need you to start watching Steins;Gate

Melizé

Hahaha yess! It is in my list of anime to watch

Ninaly

Man I haven't seen it and I'd love to watch it with the Geks

Something that gave me a new perspective and made me appreciate the story and ending more was that, if u think abt it, throughout the whole show we and the characters are constantly being told to think. Even in the last episode they talk abt the importance of doubt alongside faith, the episode itself is even titled "question". So rather than being given a straightforward ending, the ending forces us to think for ourselves and draw our own interpretations. I'm sure many of us ended up searching for theories, explanations, or even historical context, like how heliocentrism was discovered. All of this just further reinforces the teachings of the story itself.

SIIver

I highly recommend you guys watch Cowboy Bebop it’s absolute cinema when I tell you this anime is INCREDIBLE I mean it. Top 5 for me. dub is the absolute way to go

Jonas Teigen

Cinema✋😐🤚 I wonder what the next anime will be. Re: Zero or To Be Hero X would be a good replacement, both are so peak.

love shows like these

All might

it hasss to be parasyte:the maxim or apothecary diaries next

All might

It's interesting because Rafal indeed says that he will pay any price 'even if that price is life. I'll gladly toss it aside' and he never specified that he meant just his own life; he meant any life

All might

It feel like it isn’t Rafal because the age doesn’t work otherwise. It’s definitely meant to be symbolic

All might

That’s so cool

All might

Yess I agree that would have been perfect

All might

100 meters is a rlly good movie and I feel like you’ll understand even more the type of writer that Uoto is after finishing it

All might

I also think that Nowak believed it was her 100%. We already saw throughout the show that his skills of deduction were on pointtt. So that plus the .1 second glimpse he got of her before she blew herself up; I feel like he was sure. Ofc you can only describe that as belief because he had no way of confirming it and the glove fitting doesn’t prove much

WF

Very well said, thank you

Animavers

not just he died, but none of them thinking of the times lines xD badini showed up 10 years after rafal's death, then the arc after it 30 years after .. and rafal was already 12 when he died, with simple maths u can immediatly see that its not rafal

Flubbedsquid

My perspective on the weird changeup in 24 and 25: In episode 1, we see "Kingdom of P, 15th century." In Episode 23 we see "Kingdom of Poland, 1468." We go from a nebulous, generalized account to an exact place and date. The impression that this gives me is that the place we see in episode 23-25 is the real, historical Poland. The place in the first 23 episodes is a place within a story. Rafal, Oczy, Badeni, Jolenta, Nowak, Draka, and Schmidt are not real people, at least not to Albert's world. They're figurative people. Maybe they actually literally existed in Albert's world, and maybe they didn't. Maybe they're dreamt up by Albert while he wondered where this book he overheard the title of came from. They represent the chain of the idea of heliocentrism that has been lost to history, before the idea was carried on by Albert Brudzewski and Copernicus. They represent just some of the people who possibly existed in real life, carrying on the tradition of curiosity and learning. Some people might hate that. If the characters weren't real, what's the point? Well, they already aren't real. They're already just characters in the anime Orb. What difference does one more layer of story between us and them make? They didn't exist to us to begin with, what difference does it make if they are or aren't real to Albert? Old Rafal is the "real world" version of the Rafal in the story. It is definitively not the Rafal we knew. Even if this is the same universe as the first 23 episodes, the timeline is impossible. Albert was born around 12 years after Rafal was executed, as we know he was 23 when he enrolled and that he enrolled just as the letter arrived at Potocki's home. It could be a non-literal depiction used by the author to show us the other side of the coin of Rafal's beliefs. Perhaps the tutor was just a guy, but the author used Rafal, to show us who Rafal might have become, with his arrogant personality, had he lived. So, what of the letter? If this isn't the same universe, where did the letter come from? We don't know, and frankly it doesn't matter. It could be, like I said, that the chain of events we saw actually played out, or it could be something completely different. And I think that's kinda the point. We'll never know the story of those people who brought the knowledge forward through time to Albert in real life. We only know one thing for sure in this "real life" version of the anime, and that is that Albert overheard the title of Oczy's book. We did get a story. Perhaps, as I said before, one possible story of many. But ultimately, everyone we met in that story died, Oczy's book was lost forever and never published, and the culmination of all of their efforts was one single sentence overheard by Albert: "On the movements of the Earth." And that's where history steps in. Because what we know for sure is something inspired Albert to question geocentrism.

this was such a good show and i’m so glad you guys reacted to it!!! 💛🫡☀️⭐️🥺

sil 🧸ྀི

finally was able to catch up and finish the reaction heehe

DonDuh103

Love that there’s no answer for that last question cause like at the end of the day it’s gonna be different for everyone. Everyone gets to choose their life and what you offer to live it allows us to keep it.

DonDuh103

I can live with the Raffle thing but like is it him or not that to me messes with the story just in the way of confusing me.

Ceejay

That was a hallucination of Rafal born out of Nowak's guilt and shame. Rafal is dead.

jared

😂😭👏👏👏

Epic recs; monster and gits sac are at the center of my heart; really liked psycho pass too; haven't had the pleasure yet of knowing the others

jared

Loved every second of this whole series watch and this outro; as I've seen echoed below, orb should be studied in school is an epic take; I'm a big time lurker with occasional pop ins but I so appreciate you geks and everyone in the comments and getting to share in this experience 💗

Evelyn_Endwise

Late reply! I'm mostly familiar with the 2 movies (more philosphy and with great production values) and SAC the anime adaption which leans a bit more episodic police work though still with similar themes to piece together. (Separate canon though, not a sequel). The post 2000s stuff I haven't seen but I should probably catch up on. There's a new anime from the Dan da Dan studio starting soon I think, might be a good starting point (it faithfully adapts the manga which the prior stuff did not). If you saw GitS shorts, might have been the Tachikoma skits at the end of SAC episodes.

SYY917

Who's your top 5 favourite characters in orb? My friend just asked me this question yesterday and I found so hard to compare and answer this!

Holden

missing weekly orb 😭 such great reactions to the show

Wiifty

making the teacher rafael is the only flaw of the show. genuinely a perfect show if it wasnt for that

Alinto

When Raphal showed up i instantly thought it was a split timeline and this is how it "Actually happened". Although using Raphals image to symbolize open minded curiosity (the persuit of truth) makes more sense and I think it works. I was happy when the letter arrived and it confirmed we are on the same timeline. :D
