Y’all were kind of irritating this episode! Not everything is about instant gratification. Maybe have some patience & get through the freaking show to find out what’s actually going on. I mean it’s not like this is a 20 episode season. Your questions WILL BE ANSWERED Jesus Christ. Also, don’t think it’s fair at all the constant harping about theo’s mistakes when she’s obviously grieving/ mourning the loss of her sister & her severely broken family dynamic. I mean y’all don’t give Luke any heat whatsoever and he’s made 2x the amount of mistakes she’s made. Kinda feels like a weird double standard!

i mean to a certain extent, i feel like its normal for reactors to voice a want for answers - ofc the assumption is that questions will be answered in due time, but if their reaction to a scene is 'i want to know what this means' its not strange to voice that either? sure, impatience can be a bit much at times, but it didnt rly bug me personally bcuz the series sets up a lot of points for the viewer in which its a fair response also the context for theo and lukes mistakes r entirely different, so i dont think its a double standard. luke and everyone else knows he has issues and hes tried to work on himself prior to and throughout the series, meanwhile they all seemed to really love theo and suddenly it looks like she coming onto shirlys husband, to which theyre expressing their disappointment. grief and mourning is no excuse for attempted cheating

It’s 100% okay to voice your want for answers during a reaction, but the huffing/ grunting/ eyerolls/ comments were a little much this episode imo. But where is that same grace for Theo? The same character they just previously loved. Obviously what she almost did is not excusable, but I do think her situation should be taken into consideration before automatically being labeled a rat or a bum. This is just my view of people/ the world irl but I think a person is more than just their mistakes and should be given the chance to be understood.

The cop on paper is normal, but at the same time there has to be something sus about or relating to him. His recurring scenes throughout the episode, how he treated the discovery of Mr. Hills corpse, and then the very unsettling shots at the end when he's standing right in the middle of the frame in front of the door with a wide centered shot swapping to the dad... Really weird. Or maybe I'm crazy.

One of my favorite things about this show are the monologues. There's so many once you start looking for them, and they are so good!! (Think of the lady telling the story of seeing her husband hanging on the ceiling during the rainstorm, or the blind veteran at rehab talking about the little girl with melted eyes). This one by Mr Dudley is my FAVORITE one of the whole show!! The actor delivered it so well, it always gives me chills

Your Theo take is very wrong but that’s okay, we initially assumed what happened based on what we could see, waited for the evidence in episode 8 and came to and understanding conclusion. This sort of opinion lowkey takes the fun out of it. The only reason we are doing any of that is because we are enjoying the show and the questions /mysteries that it gives. It’s real raw reactions. Also with the difference between Luke and Theo, #1 honestly feels like a HUGE hindsight merchant thing to impose on us because right after this we watched episode 8, and number 2 Luke was messed up from the beginning whereas we saw Theo go from up to down which we were then grappling with. As much as you are asking for patience from us in this video, you gave us 0 to see our reactions to the following episodes, which I find a little ironic

i dont really understand this idea of double standard in regards to luke and theo when they r very different scenarios, shown in very different ways tbh. its one thing to say theres a double standard if they took any of the same actions and got totally different reactions, but they really arent the same thing? luke is a known drug addict whos made a lot of mistakes over time in trying to feed said addiction, and has also been shown trying to work on it a lot both prior to and over the course of the story - whereas this is an entirely new thing for theo, and is portrayed as her coming onto her siblings spouse. their actions only really correlate much if u consider that theyre both prompted by circumstances driving them to seek out comfort in bad things, but even then theyre very different actions taken. also i just think the responses r giving way too much hindsight 😭

The tens of hours I've spent watching criminal psychology interrogation room footage analysis has prepared me for scenes like this with the cop lol. You're right obviously, he's using a technique. The first indicator is when he asks about cream and sugar for the coffee, he tries to gauge how comfortable the dad is with accepting their hospitality. He's also ofc building rapport. Super interesting! And yeah cannon, always get a lawyer. If they make you think you'd look more suspicious with a lawyer, you should especially get a lawyer lol

I study historical conservation and restoration, and the talk about just breaking open the red room kills me on the inside ahaha. You don't do that to old houses! Look at that beautiful woodwork! and the ornate antique handle!! You have to be careful!! Which is why the dad hasn't tried it until this episode when he feels desperate. The room staying closed until now is totally realistic, and would likely be saved for last in this kinda project but ofc also is a plot point for the mystery of the show

ooo, that sounds like such a cool subject! id kinda assumed itd be for such reasons seeing as in watching restoration videos, keeping the original doors and hardware of old buildings/pieces often seems to be a selling point, and the red room door is already so unique on top of that! so kinda neat to see it semi-confirmed by someone in a related field :)

Yess that's exactly it! There's a lot of value in old objects like that and going about opening/fixing/removing them is done with great care. In a situation like this the door might even be boarded up on purpose by previous owners to protect it if it's fragile. Old houses are like artworks

Shirley is my least favorite, I feel like she deflects everything going on with her on others, as well as being super judging and condescending to her siblings. I just can't forgive her for sending Luke away on Nellie's wedding(and props to Luke for never bringing that up and breaking the family futher). (Talking pre-cheating, after that it is hard to judge her, and I do feel bad for her)

Just finished the reaction, and I have several thoughts: 1. It is wild to me that Cannon has never been to a funeral. Like, what?! 2. Luke's speech always chokes me up. Poor dude. :-( 3. I sympathize with Shirley because her mom died when she was young and she's the eldest daughter. She lets Theo live with her rent-free (even though Theo offered), she paid for Luke's rehab multiple times, and apparently, even Luke lived with her for a while. She also gives discounts on funerals so it's clear she has a big heart. She's just fed up with her siblings and their shit which is fair. Having a drug addict in the family is not easy and Luke showed up at Nell's wedding high. The day would have been all about him. She probably should have told Nell at some point that Luke did show up but I can't really blame her for not wanting Luke to be high at Nell's wedding.

In Theo's defense, the girl showing up at the funeral is weird, so I get why Theo was annoyed about it. They just started hooking up, and she's already coming to a private family event during what is probably their worst moment. None of them presumably acts like this normally.

@briana you make great points, but on the subject of the wedding I think that should've been left up to Nellie. And I think she would've been overjoyed to have him there. Look at how took Theo making out with that other bridesmade, I don't think she would've been upset with him. The problem is there that Shirley took that decision from Nellie. Like with the book she decided it was wrong when Theo clearly didn't agree. She decides what's right and wrong, expects everyone to follow her morals, and there's no arguing with her - so everyone just goes around her back. Including her husband taking the many secretly so they don't go bankrupt. She doesn't have to be a bad person for that to be really really aggravating(which is a testament to her being well written)

@shpitz I can agree with her making all the decisions and expecting people to just follow them because that's not fair. I don't really agree with comparing Theo and the bridesmaid with Luke being a drug addict and showing up to her wedding high, though, since the only ones who seemed to care/notice were the immediate family, because they didn't know Theo was out. If Luke was there everyone would have been looking out for him and he would have come down from the drugs and go through withdrawal. Asking Nell to make that choice on her wedding day seems like a lot so I still think she should have probably told her at some point but I don't fully hate that decision.

There was another ghost casually lurking in the background of the basement when the dead body was found. I didn't notice it at all until I watched that YT video showing all the ghosts.

Shirl is actually one of my favorites, but maybe it's because I agree with many of her choices whereas I find a lot of Theo, Luke, and Steve's choices distasteful. With Luke I understand addiction is a disease, but those other two? I don't really see their excuse for generally being cold and unfriendly siblings. And idk why Steve would ever think it was fine to write and publish about an experience that wasn't his and sully the memory of their mother. Nell said as much as well.

If I was that cop, yes I would be wanting answers but at the same time when you experience something traumatic you can go into shock and dissociate from reality etc. maybe that's why he waited three hours. But yes, if I was that cop I would give him a break bc his wife did just die but also while trying to do my job.

I love this show, one of my favorites, and I never really found the slow burn frustrating, but I totally understand why you guys would. Carter said at the end, "we could just watch the next episode", but because of how you all have to film, you can't just watch the next episode like anyone else could. I'm pretty sure the first time I watched this show I finished it in two nights, I just couldn't stop watching. I'm sure if I had to stretch it out over a whole month I would feel the same frustration you guys do.

The next show should definitely be the haunting of bly manor. It’s in the same series as this by the same creator. A lot of the actors return as well. Hill house is my fave but you could argue bly manor was even more gut wrenching.

But I have to say, I don’t really get why you were being sarcastic and defensive with “it’s not about the plot” and “who are we to say?” in the post-discussion. It almost felt as if the commenters hadn’t let you have your own opinion or were trying to dictate what to think 🙈 I don’t remember anything out of pocket or aggressive in the comment section of the previous episodes. People were just sharing their understanding of the series. Maybe I read it wrong, but that’s the impression I got.
