I havent watched the reaction yet so idk what you thought of it, but the slime isekai is actually like THE most popular isekai in Japan in current day. Whenever I see sales figures for light novels its always near or at the top. It has a fan base in the west too, to a lesser degree, although I'de say Re:zero, Muskoku Tensei, Konusuba, etc are more popular here. Also whether the quality lives up to the popularity is another story...

Dont underestimate slime the levels of depth it goes into is insane its like soo good once it gets going and its really fast paced and the characters are great

slime is actually great and i hope you watch it for real some day. he's not gonna be slime forever(in appearance) and the show is actually mostly about politics, schemes, power scaling and development of society from scratch and then coexistence with other nations and races. what im saying is kinda spoilery but the reason im saying this is because first episode is not enough to get that this show about those things and i don't want you to turn away from it. it's very fun, enjoyable and hilarious to watch. also some people say that it can be boring with "meetings and yapping" but it's just a matter of taste, i personally like it and it's not boring at all for me.

I watch a lot of the feel good isekai there are also the insanely popular ones. isekai is how i discovered LiSa as an artist the first time. Most people know her from the Demon Slayer theme but i discovered her through Sword Art Online. Isekai is also how the great meme of Truck-kun was born.

For me personally they are on the same level not in terms of what the story is but the emotional attachment to the characters, overall world building and just how in depth both of those shows can be when it comes to details, like foreshadowing. Crunchyroll really butchers the subtitles on Re: Zero and it confuses a lot of people

@Hugh Yeah, definitely on the same level imo. The anime is just about halfway through the full story tho, so there’s still a lot of payoff left. So AOT definitely has the advantage of being finished. AOT is a top 10 for me, it's peak. Yeah honestly, Re:Zero is one of those shows that hits completely different the older you get—not just because it gets more complex, but because of the themes and depth of the writing. It’s definitely worth giving another shot with an open mind, especially if you appreciate storytelling more now. The “repetitiveness” is actually what a lot of people bounce off at first, but it ends up being one of the strongest parts once you understand what the author is doing with it. Everything happens for a reason, similar to AOT. It’s less about the ability itself and more about what it does to Subaru as a person, which also ties into why he can come off as annoying early on

Also Campfire Cooking in another World with my Absurd Skill has become one of my recent favs i absolutely love it. I love checking out the shows with the long titles (usually because they're translated from light novels). Chillin in my 30's after getting fired from the Demon King's Army also was a guilty pleasure of mine, not an isekai but great. Fluffy Paradise is also an isekai that i love, it's both cozy and cute and has a deeper plot. There's literally an anime for everyone out there. Also Tsukimichi: Moonlight Fantasy is another good one that's very funny as well.

If you’re in the mood for something truly insane, definitely check out the first episode of Cautious Hero. And if you’re looking for some solid quality, A Wild Last Boss Appeared or Gate are great picks. Hope you enjoy them if you give them a shot! Also when you think about it Narnia is an isekai.

isekais are mostly power fantasies especially if the viewer kind of hates real life and wants escapism, isekai is it. There are certainly interesting plots and unique scenarios and unlimited potential in world building and depth. This genre is very popular in japan, tons of mangas and light novels and has a ton of slop just like regular shounens but some have multiple seasons because it pretty much becomes a shounen.

I watched Slime and Uncle from Another World, but for The Daily Life of a Middle-Aged Online Shopper, I only read the manga. I’d say Uncle from Another World stays consistently good all the way through. Slime starts off a bit slow, but eventually becomes great, then dips a little before getting really good again later on. As for Middle-Aged Online Shopper, I honestly don’t remember enough to judge it properly—I’ve read so many isekai series that they all start blending together after a while. It could’ve been great, I just genuinely can’t recall much about it.

Slime is kinda like a Game of Thrones of Isekai, just a bit less quality. It is a massive world with lots of lore. However, if you guys are going to watch it, I would be prepared for a drop off in quality with the more recent seasons (just like GOT)

Believe me I once watched Rezero and couldn't get past 12 episodes. Then I gave it another chance this time seriously analysing it and rewatching it with knowledge of cut content, and it really opened my eyes to how ignorant I was, Rezero the anime is great but only when you have a good understanding of it because it's very complex if you want to get down to the peak of its writting, unless you are actively trying to understand it fully focused on it or had already read the Light novel a lot of its greatness won't be visible. But yeah the Rezero anime story is easily in the top 5 best anime stories.

The Eminence in Shadow is another good one. Isekais are nice too because not all of them get second seasons which sucks but if more people watched some really good ones they'd probably get more support and funding. There are a lot of hidden gems within the sub-genre that need love the market is dominated by shonen. let's get some shoujo, seinen, and josei out there.

It's enjoyable slop though, which is what most isekais are ; enjoyable slop. Not peak isekais like the big 3 (Re:zero, Mushoukou and Konosuba) Or great ones like Slime, Eminence in shadow, No game no life, Overlord, Tanya the evil, Ascendence of a bookworm, Cautious Hero and Gate.) There are occasionaly some that are neither peak/great nor slop like Uncle from another world, Grimgar, Tate no yusha, Arifureta and many more but they are only a small portion of isekais in a sea of enjoyable/ non enjoyable slop, still there are quite a few to see. Now slop sometimes can mean just the animation and the actual story or idea of the isekai is decent like shopekeeper.

Most Isekais are just slop, i mean just absolute dogshit. A decent chunk of them the author just self insert themselves as the mc, who is also conveniently the most op chadlike character that is followed by a harem. Honestly you guys should watch one of these just for fun (because sometimes you gotta watch bad and silly stuff) and further your journey into weebdom. However, there are obviously exceptions like with everything, there are some cute wholesome ones, epic fantasy ones, but the best overall one that I've seen is definitely Re-Zero. It has a twist thats different than others, and the story and themes are really great. Highly recommend this to be your next watch!

I am not really a fan of isekai but one of the few I would recommend is Ascendance of a Bookworm! It really goes into world building and incorporating real world innovations into it. It's also refreshing in the sense that the main character is not overpowered like a typical isekai protagonist. Throughout the series, we learn about the nuances of the world she was thrust into while attempting to overcome her own physical and mental shortcomings.

It was actually one of the most popular anime airing at the time for its season but lost steam because they had some production issues and had to delay some episodes. The target audience are clearly edgy teenagers who want to self insert themselves into a power fantasy harem. Yo guys no shame in liking isekai slop. Almost all anime fans went through a major isekai phase where they consumed every seasonal trash anime coming out because of these concepts and zero to hero feeling. Once you have seen it all you start hating it but it absolutely does have an addicitve factor for sure. Solo leveling is also just high quality slop especially for those who have seen a couple of these powerfantasy stories before. Uncle and slime are the less generic shows that are actually kinda good but the second one is TYPICALL isekai slop, you can find about 200 anime like it out there.

Okay, I see so many mentions of Re:Zero and I just want to say that I was completely uninterested in that show for YEARS. Like, I thought it was just another isekai. You know, lame MC surrounded by cute girls and a lukewarm plot. I decided to give it a shot this year randomly and let me just say it’s been a real delight to watch. (I’m still in the beginning of this show so I don’t know ball yet.) The MC is neat and super likable. He’s loser coded but in a charming way, and most importantly as a woman, he doesn’t give me the ick! And so far the premise is super interesting and unique. I could say the exact same thing about your description of Re:Zero as immature and boring. Without posting spoilers, I have a detailed breakdown of its main character that makes it clear that anyone who thinks he’s badly written either isn’t paying enough attention, isn’t actively trying to engage with the show on a deeper level, or is simply unaware of some relevant cut content. That said, I’ve seen Autosave understand Re:Zero decently well with no outside knowledge, and they absolutely adored it, season 2 is probably one of their favourite seasons of anime. My analysis—covers just the first two seasons not even the third or the one airing right now—but it's more than enough to show that Re:Zero’s protagonist is one of the best-written characters in anime. I’d honestly challenge anyone to bring forward something that surpasses it in quality, thematic depth, or complexity. And just to be clear: I’m not a Mushoku Tensei hater. I think that show deserves an A+ or S-tier in writing, regardless of how you feel about its main character.

Modern isekais only really started in the 2010s and they by and large tend to be escapist fantasies where the protagonist lives a power fantasy and doesn't really care to go home. They tend to have really poor, similar gamified worldbuilding relying on a singular gimmick to hook users (Usually mentioned in the overly long silly titles) that gets old fast. This is in contrast to what isekai was before which was more generally called 'portal fantasy' where characters are dropped in another world and seek to find their way home. They tend to have female protagonists, strong world building, and usually some well written drama. The stories were oft bittersweet journies. Something analogous in books/movies would be Narnia. In case you can't tell, I'm bitter about losing the original 'isekai' genre and getting the wish fulfillment stuff, but there's clearly a market for consuming fantasy slop. You did manage to pick some of the better isekais somehow though I'd rate Uncle much much higher than the others. It's a brief 13 ep season and primarily a competent comedy; I would say it's the only one I would recommend actually continuing. I have limited time as a working adult so I don't really check in on the trashier anime out there anymore so can't really recommend some weird ones. Comment section is awash with Re:0/Mushoku Tensei recommendations. Re:0 is probably a good pick up even if mc can be insufferable. I would strongly advise against MT unless you're ready to handle an mc who represents so much of the weird anime stuff you prob had an image of before you started this channel. Personally he's too much for me so I dropped it in S2. Side note: I picked up all the novels of the 12 Kingdoms portal fantasy series when I was in Japan and have been reading them in Japanese since. They're so good. Vive la portal fantasy.

Mushoku Tensei is literally just a pedophile author writing a story for pedophiles about a pedophile getting a bunch of friends and marrying his child-wife but then cheating on her with another child before ending up in a child harem and getting cool magic. One of the worst anime plots in years. Only thing it has going for it is some B-tier world building. Everything else is generic and disgusting.

Ehhhh, maybe not so much, but the anime adaptation so far is 10/10. But hard agree otherwise. Gachiakuta is an industry plant that does nothing original and is basically just a generic young-adult scifi series. Deadass has the same world building as any hunger-games clone, but with the most generic and boring battle shonen fights. Sakamoto days is a fun premise, but gets really repetitive really quickly. Basically just a less interesting onepunchman after a point.

i hadnt thought of how much of it was a generational split, but come to think of it it really is a stark contrast between the years 😭 grew up loving inuyasha and clamp stories like magic knight rayearth, but its much harder to come across similar things these days seeing as they definitely dont seem to get as much traction. only seen uncle of this batch myself and thoroughly enjoyed it though 🙂‍↕️ and id agree that the re:zero mc can be pretty back and forth for me, but i moreso enjoy it for the some aspects of the plot (without spoiling lol) and its twists + certain side characters i think 🤧

I've heard "Conception" thrown around here and there as the worst isekai anime. Haven't actually seen it myself though. No real interest given the premise. Isekai Cheat Magician is another one I've been turned off watching thanks to reviews. Mostly I think a given isekai is either regarded as boring or good depending on whether people enjoy the type of setting. Some people hate unserious power fantasy anime, others hate slice of life chill anime, and others hate statecraft/politics/town builder anime, etc. So it ends up depending on what you like. Broadly speaking isekai often has strong 'wish fulfillment' vibes because of the premise of going to another world. It's usally meant to scratch the specific itch of a subset of watchers that have a particular idea of what they wish they could do and succeed at if they got to start again knowing what they know now. So usually things aren't that dramatic and while there might be ups and downs, the overal trend is upwards towards success for the main character because of that. If that's not what someone enjoys in a show, then isekai probably won't be their bag, but otherwise you can have some fun in the sub-genre. For a silly bit of fun with a more wacky premised isekai, an example is: Reborn as a Vending Machine, I Now Wander the Dungeon Die. Become a vending machine in a fantasy adventurer setting...Profit?

Its always the mushoku fans who have to shit on the others shows to pretend its more mature than the rest, even though it literally fails for the very thing you listed about the other shows lol literally every single negative you brought up, mushoku does and even popularized for the genre. It's higher quality and good world building though, wont deny that, the adaptation is made with an abundance of passion and love for the ip. But it absolutely is a harem power fantasy that fails in its themes it tries to present from the beginning. It was supposed to be a loser and morally awful character have a new chance at life and do and be better, but is still morally just as shit. The only difference is hes hot and powerful now so it's now A-ok for him to be the same guy as he was before, because him being ugly was essentially what was wrong with him is what the story is presenting. He's still the same guy who would take pictures of his niece to jerk off too later while skipping his mothers funeral, he's just a less pathetic human being. It's no surprise so many people cant jive with an mc like that. Subaru is another pathetic mc who actually puts in the work to change who he is and redeem his lesser qualities, and he didnt have to change his looks or become this op powerful god who can solo the verse to do it. He put in the character growth and introspection to get to that point. The only thing is its not immediate, you will have to see him hit rock bottom in his portrayal and be really cringe in doing so, but literally right after and for even more beyond that point, is a very rewarding experience of seeing his growth. That's the difference between the two, one actually pulls off the theme while the other fails to see the root issue with the character going through it. Rudy's perversion was never the problem in his story, it was just the fact he was a fucking loser. Now that hes a "winner", his perversion is rewarded. Subaru clears, and pulls off the very thing youre trying to apply to Rudy. And I say this as someone fully caught up on mushoku tensei and will even continue the show and knows about story beats that are coming up. It's entertaining for folks more experienced with the medium who can enjoy its other elements, but he is easily one of the worst main characters ever written and his fans are absolutely delusional in believing he pulls off the themes presented for him lol

Ok but Slime is actually a great show that I actively look forward to new episodes each week as a new season is currently airing. Also the genre in general has a ton of variety. It's got plenty of joking comedy premise shows but also many great well written serious shows. No need to bag on these as just trash. I think this take seriously oversimplifies what Mushoku Tensei is trying to do. Nobody has to like Rudy, and if people find him uncomfortable that's fair. But saying his entire character boils down to "he became hot and powerful so now his flaws are rewarded" feels like reducing a pretty layered story into the worst possible reading of it. Mushoku was never about Rudy instantly becoming a morally perfect person. It's about a guy who completely wasted his first life getting a second chance and slowly trying to become better than who he used to be. The story spends way more time on family, trauma, relationships, insecurity, and regret than it does on power fantasy wish fulfillment. Rudy becoming strong isn't the point of his development. The series repeatedly shows that power doesn't solve his real problems. He still struggles with fear, guilt, depression, social issues, and emotional baggage long after becoming talented and respected. Most of his major conflicts are personal, not power-based. That's why calling him "one of the worst MCs ever written" is just dumb and exaggerated. You're not supposed to immediately admire Rudy. You're supposed to watch someone deeply flawed stumble through growth in a messy and sometimes uncomfortable way. Meanwhile, Subaru gets treated like a flawless counterexample when he's honestly just a different kind of flawed protagonist. His development is reasonable, but it comes through constant trauma and forced introspection via Return by Death. He's obsessive, emotionally volatile, and spends a lot of the story learning hard lessons after hitting rock bottom repeatedly. That's compelling, but it doesn't automatically make his growth more legitimate than Rudy's. The bigger difference is that Re:Zero and Mushoku tackle self-improvement differently. Re:Zero breaks Subaru down to rebuild him. Mushoku focuses more on rehabilitation and learning to live without repeating past failures. So if someone prefers Subaru, fair enough. But acting like Mushoku completely fails its themes while Re:Zero perfectly succeeds feels more like holding them to different standards than actual criticism. Rudy doesn't become a saint, but he absolutely becomes more responsible, empathetic, and invested in others than the person he started as, and that's the entire point.

Yeah there were like 4 or 5 straight episodes of political yap with near 0 animation on screen in s3 which made roshi drop it. I remember him comparing it to the episode where tengen was explaining the culling games and talking about how horrible the slime animation was(no movement, no diagrams, bad visuals etc) during the talking episodes compared to the jjk talking episode. Imo It’s much better as a manga after the first 2 seasons

See, now this is an analysis I can get behind. While we disagree on our preferred mc, this comment is more than just the equivalent of "agenda posting" that your original comment seemed to have the energy of. I'll admit I went into Mushoku with very high expectations and really was willing to give grace to Rudy's faults early on since I was sold this idea of this being the ultimate redemption story. In the element of his new found confidence and appreciation for his new family, I do agree that he successfully has improved in those specific themes. But the further I got into the story, his other faults were not improved, it just was being done by a less pathetic human being. I hear excuses of "it was a different time" or now all of a sudden that it was never supposed to be a story about redemption. Hell, even today I saw a post from the author about this very topic pertaining to his perversion. And he said himself that Rudy doesnt see it as a fault, so why would he try to redeem that element of himself? Which only solidified my belief that he is still that sexual deviant that would do the very same thing he did in his worst moment. He groomed 2 child brides, the second wife being the "healthiest" relationship since it wasnt a child being groomed, but was an affair partner while his first wife is pregnant and alone and he knocks up the second wife, with the third wife and groomed child about to come back from her adventure which Im sure we'll be getting soon in the anime. He has side pieces that are blackmailed and there is an even further story element that I wont get into if youre an anime only, dont want to spoil you on that, that only solidifies how "ok" all this is. But this does make me curious how you dont consider this a harem power fantasy like the others? Because its higher quality with cinematic portrayal? How does 3 wifes and him being one of the most powerful mages to have exist before becoming an adult not count as any of what you said you dont like about the others? lol especially when said power fantasy harem isekais were all inspired by mushoku tensei.... it's not really making any sense on the logic used for me there. And dont get me wrong, I actually dont judge anyone for liking mushoku, it does have positive traits and is very well done. Shit, I am even one of those fans, I just really dont like Rudy and still believe he was only partially successful in the themes presented by the author and what the fans were selling, which is probably why im more critical than usual. I could have even given him grace on the groomed child brides if he wasnt a pedophile before, even though I really would have preferred him to build a friendship with them as children and then become romantic in their adult life. But him being a pedophile cant be ignored, it cant be brushed under the rug when the story is about a second chance at life so he can become a better human being with a happier life, the pedophile has to stop being a pedophile for that to work lol at least its a great fantasy show, it's what keeps me around. But fuck, Rudy is a character where the ball has fallen down a pit and you cant see it anymore. I know its easy to just assume im morally grandstanding and not giving the story a real chance when I see ugly elements in a story, but i truly gave the story a chance to deal with the nuance in a story like this. And ultimately it's failed in those themes for me, I've enjoyed plenty of morally grey and evil characters in other works, but the story is presenting Rudy as being morally right and the shining example of a good guy in this world, and comparatively he is (compared to mass murderers and rapists) but they never addressed his biggest sin, and thats a failure in character writing within this theme specifically. And that's why it feels like the story is basically saying the issue wasnt him being a pedophile sneaking videos of his niece in the bathroom to jerk off too and skipping his mothers funeral, his issue was being a pathetic loser who is depressed about life. So if given a second chance in that scenario, the growth hes shown is that he would still sneak those pictures and jerk off, but now he wont skip his moms funeral to do so since he's grown to appreciate his family. Still a very glaring issue in that scenario even if there's been the slightest improvement lol and the story will never address that sin of his, the ship has sailed. He's a healthier and more confident individual, so success there, but he's still a pedophile who never did the work to address that issue and not do those things. And if being married because of your groomed brides is what stops him from perving on anyone new, that's not really an improvement either. He just gets to vent his sexual deviancy, but still has the core issue within himself.

I know I watched only ep 1 years ago and never continued but saw something, gave it a chance, watched ep 1 and 2 and havent stopped since. May not have been mentioned yet, but as far as isekai’s go, Zenshu might be a hidden gem? I don’t see a lot of hype for it but it’s very visually stunning and is about an animator who gets isekai’ed into her favorite childhood movie. It’s a short series, with only 12 episodes and the vibe of the movie’s world is somewhat similar to that of Labyrinth (starring David Bowie) or The Dark Crystal.

It's a little slower paced, especially in the beginning, but it has a really great story with an actually competent and charming protagonist. I really hope you guys revisit it someday. It's completely worth it imo. And I'm glad to see you're considering Re:Zero!! It definitely wouldn't have fit the theme for this video though, you're right, but it's 100% one of the shows I'd want to see a full reaction for from you guys. Slime is one of my favorite Isekai and fantasy anime. I had delayed this show just because of the name, but it grew on me a lot. Aside from the slime, I would recommend Mushoku Tensei and Re: Zero. A special recommendation is Shangri-La Frontier, it's about a game.

Ok so I actually love Isekai animes and have watched a lot of them. The names can be kinda crazy and their is a lot of ones with fan service but they also can be very good. I always give new Isekai's atleast 1-2 episodes. I personally hate when they are all fan service. I personally really like The Eminence In Shadow but a lot of people don't like it. Overlord is amazing and you guys should definitely watch it. Also not an Isekai but you guys should watch Shangri-La frontier.
